Abstract:Skin flora pose a significant infection risk in breast reconstruction where the axilla, inframammary fold, and periareolar regions harbor higher bacterial concentrations. Cutibacterium acnes ( C. acnes ) is of particular concern due to antibiotic resistance and its ability to form biofilms. These factors complicate the treatment for breast implant infections. Current CDC-recommended skin preparation methods, such as alcohol-based antiseptics, fall short against C. acnes . Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) has proven effective in mitigating infection risk in shoulder arthroplasty and is a promising adjunct to preoperative antisepsis. Given the persistent threat of C. acnes in breast surgeries, a tailored preoperative skin preparation strategy including BPO is proposed to mitigate infection risk.
