Abstract:The bilinear forms graph denoted here by Bil_q(e× d) is a graph defined on the set of (e× d)-matrices (e≥ d) over 𝔽_q with two matrices being adjacent if and only if the rank of their difference equals 1. In 1999, K. Metsch showed that the bilinear forms graph Bil_q(e× d) is characterized by its intersection array if one of the following holds: (-) q=2 and e≥ d+4, (-) q≥ 3 and e≥ d+3. Thus, the following cases have been left unsettled: (-) q=2 and e∈{d,d+1,d+2,d+3}, (-) q≥ 3 and e∈{d,d+1,d+2}. In this work, we show that the graph of bilinear (d× d)-forms over the binary field, where d≥ 3, is characterized by its intersection array. In doing so, we also classify locally grid graphs whose μ-graphs are hexagons and the intersection numbers b_i,c_i are well-defined for all i=0,1,2.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid to a problem of classification of all Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs with large diameter [1] (for the definitions, we refer the reader to Section 2). One of the steps towards solution of this problem is a characterization of known distance-regular graphs by their intersection arrays. For the current status of the classification of the Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs, we refer the reader to the survey paper [3] by Van Dam, Koolen and Tanaka. The bilinear forms graph denoted here by Bilq(d×n) is a graph defined on the set of d×n-matrices over Fq with two matrices being adjacent if and only if the rank of their difference is 1. We refer to [2, Chapter 9.5.A] for the detailed description of these graphs. In 1999, K. Metsch [5] obtained the following result.

Abstract:We establish strong constraints on the kernel of the (reduced) Burau representation $\beta_4:B_4\to \text{GL}_3\left(\mathbb{Z}\left[q^{\pm 1}\right]\right)$ of the braid group $B_4$. We develop a theory to explicitly determine the entries of the Burau matrices of braids in $B_4$, and this is an important step toward demonstrating that $\beta_4$ is faithful (a longstanding question posed in the 1930s). The theory is based on a novel combinatorial interpretation of $\beta_4\left(g\right)$, in terms of the Garside normal form of $g\in B_4$ and a new product decomposition of positive braids. We develop cancellation results for words in matrix groups to show that if $\sigma$ is a generic positive braid in $B_4$ and if $t\neq 2$ is a prime number, then the leading coefficients in at least one row of the matrix $\beta_4\left(\sigma\right)$ are non-zero modulo $t$. We exploit these cancellation results to deduce that the Burau representation of $B_4$ is faithful almost everywhere.

Abstract:Bidirected graphs are multigraphs where every edge has an independent direction at each end. In the paper, with an arbitrary bidirected graph we associate a non-negative integral quadratic form (called the incidence form of the graph), and determine all forms that appear in this way in two main results: first, among non-negative connected unit forms, precisely those of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}$ or $\mathbb{D}$ are incidence forms; second, we give simple conditions on the coefficients of a non-negative connected non-unitary form to be an incidence form. We say that those non-unitary forms have Dynkin type $\mathbb{C}$, and justify such nomenclature by generalizing known classifications and properties of non-negative quadratic forms of Dynkin types $\mathbb{A}$ and $\mathbb{D}$ to the introduced type~$\mathbb{C}$. We also show that the graphical framework of an incidence form is an useful tool to visualize its arithmetical properties, to prove new facts and to perform efficient computations for integral quadratic forms and related problems in number theory, algebra and graph theory. For instance, in a third main result we relate the walks of a bidirected graph with the $0,1,2$-roots of the associated incidence form (and to the classical root systems in the positive case). Moreover, we prove the universality property for a large class of integral quadratic forms, provide computational methods to find solutions or to characterize the finiteness of the sets of solutions of various related Diophantine equations, show a variant of Whitney's theorem on line graphs using switching classes, and apply our techniques to give a conceptual and constructive proof of the non-negativity (and possible Dynkin types) of the Euler quadratic forms of a class of finite-dimensional gentle algebras.

On the holes in $I^n$ for symmetric bilinear forms in characteristic 2

Abstract:Let $F$ be a field. Following the resolution of Milnor's conjecture relating the graded Witt ring of $F$ to its mod-2 Milnor $K$-theory, a major problem in the theory of symmetric bilinear forms is to understand, for any positive integer $n$, the low-dimensional part of $I^n(F)$, the $n$th power of the fundamental ideal in the Witt ring of $F$. In a 2004 paper, Karpenko used methods from the theory of algebraic cycles to show that if $\mathfrak{b}$ is a non-zero anisotropic symmetric bilinear form of dimension $< 2^{n+1}$ representing an element of $I^n(F)$, then $\mathfrak{b}$ has dimension $2^{n+1} - 2^i$ for some $1 \leq i \leq n$. When $i = n$, a classical result of Arason and Pfister says that $\mathfrak{b}$ is similar to an $n$-fold Pfister form. At the next level, it has been conjectured that if $n \geq 2$ and $i= n-1$, then $\mathfrak{b}$ is isometric to the tensor product of an $(n-2)$-fold Pfister form and a $6$-dimensional form of trivial discriminant. This has only been shown to be true, however, when $n = 2$, or when $n = 3$ and $\mathrm{char}(F) \neq 2$ (another result of Pfister). In the present article, we prove the conjecture for all values of $n$ in the case where $\mathrm{char}(F) =2$. In addition, we give a short and elementary proof of Karpenko's theorem in the characteristic-2 case, rendering it free from the use of subtle algebraic-geometric tools. Finally, we consider the question of whether additional dimension gaps can appear among the anisotropic forms of dimension $\geq 2^{n+1}$ representing an element of $I^n(F)$. When $\mathrm{char}(F) \neq 2$, a result of Vishik asserts that there are no such gaps, but the situation seems to be less clear when $\mathrm{char}(F) = 2$.

Abstract:For each quadratic form Q in Quad(V) over a given vector space over a field R we have the Clifford algebra Cl(V,Q) defined as the quotient T(V)/I(Q) of the tensor algebra T(V) over the two-sided ideal generated by expressions of the form $x x-Q(x),x in V. In the present paper we consider the whole family Cl(V,Q) in a geometric way as a Z2-graded vector bundle over the base manifold Quad(V). Bilinear forms F from Bil(V) act on this bundle providing natural bijective linear mappings lambda_F between Clifford algebras for different Cl(V,Q). Alternate (or antisymmetric) forms induce vertical automorphisms, which we propose to consider as 'gauge transformations'. We develop here the formalism of N. Bourbaki, which generalizes the well known Chevalley's isomorphism Cl(V,Q)->End(Wedge(V)->Wedge(V). In particular we realize the Clifford algebra twisting gauge trnsformations induced by antisymmetric bilinear forms as exponentials of contractions with elements of $Wedge(V^* representing these forms. Throughtout all this paper we intentionally avoid using the so far accepted term "Clifford algebra of a bilinear form" (known otherwise as "Quantum Clifford algebra"), which we consider as possibly misleading, as it does not represent any well defined mathematical object. Instead we show explicitly how any given Clifford algebra Cl(Q) can be naturally realized as acting via endomorphisms of any other Clifford algebra Cl(Q') if Q'=Q+Q_F,and Q_F(x)=F(x,x). Possible physical meaning of such transformations are also mentioned.

Abstract:We construct and investigate certain (unbalanced) superalgebra structures on $\text{End}_K(V)$, with $K$ a field of characteristic $0$ and $V$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space (of dimension $n\geq 2$). These structures are induced by a choice of non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form $B$ on $V$ and a choice of non-zero base vector $w\in V$. After exploring the construction further, we apply our results to certain questions concerning integer matrix factorization and isometry of integral lattices.

Abstract:We study cliques in graphs arising from quadratic forms where the vertices are the elements of the module of the quadratic form and two vertices are adjacent if their difference represents some fixed scalar. We determine structural properties and the clique number for quadratic forms over finite rings. We further extend previous results about graphs arising from such forms and forms over fields of characteristic 0 in a unified framework.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a lot of progress in obtaining non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman sums in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ for arbitrary integers $m$. These results have been motivated by a wide variety of applications, such as improved asymptotic formulas for moments of $L$-functions. However, there has been very little work done in this area in the setting of rational function fields over finite fields. We remedy this and provide a number of new non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman and Gauss sums in this setting, based on new bounds on the number of solutions to certain modular congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ .

Abstract:Fiol has characterized quotient-polynomial graphs as precisely the connected graphs whose adjacency matrix generates the adjacency algebra of a symmetric association scheme. We show that a collection of non-negative integer parameters of size $d + \frac{d(d-1)}{2}$ is adequate for describing symmetric association schemes of class $d$ that are generated by the adjacency matrix of their first non-trivial relation. We use this to generate a database of the corresponding quotient-polynomial graphs that have small valency and up to 6 classes, and among these find new feasible parameter sets for symmetric association schemes with noncyclotomic eigenvalues.

Abstract:For a graph Γ we say that λ exists if every edge lies in exactly λ triangles. Egawa has shown that the Hamming graphs are determined by their parameters, unless λ equals 2. In that case the only possible graphs are the Doob graphs. Rifà and Huguet and Nomura generalised this result by Egawa for λ ≠ 2. We generalise Egawa′s result for λ = 2. The main part of the proof is a characterization of cartesian products of graphs.

Abstract:It is known from algebraic graph theory that if L is the Laplacian matrix of some tree G with a vertex degree sequence d=(δ1,…,δn)⊤ and D is its distance matrix, then LD+2I=(2⋅1−d)1⊤, where 1 is an all-ones column vector. We prove the converse proposition: if this identity holds for the Laplacian matrix of some graph G with a degree sequence d and for some matrix D, then G is essentially a tree, and D is its distance matrix. This result immediately generalizes to weighted graphs. Therefore, the above bilinear matrix equation in L, D, and d characterizes trees in terms of their Laplacian and distance matrices, so it can be used as a constraint in mixed-integer formulations of distance-related tree topology design problems (e.g., optimum communication spanning tree or hop-constrained minimum spanning tree problems). If the matrix D is symmetric, the lower triangular part of this matrix identity is redundant and can be omitted, which halves the number of constraints in an optimization problem. Applications to the extremal graph theory (especially, to topological index optimization and to optimal tree problems) and to road topology design are discussed.

Abstract:For a field extension $L/K$ we consider maps that are quadratic over $L$ but whose polarisation is only bilinear over $K$. Our main result is that all such are automatically quadratic forms over $L$ in the usual sense if and only if $L/K$ is formally unramified. In particular, this shows that over finite and number fields, one of the axioms in the standard definition of quadratic forms is superfluous.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be the finite field of $q$ elements and let $D_{2n}=\langle x,y\mid x^n=1, y^2=1, yxy=x^{n-1}\rangle$ be the dihedral group of order $n$. Left ideals of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}_{q}[D_{2n}]$ are known as left dihedral codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of length $2n$, and abbreviated as left $D_{2n}$-codes. Let ${\rm gcd}(n,q)=1$. In this paper, we give an explicit representation for the Euclidean hull of every left $D_{2n}$-code over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. On this basis, we determine all distinct Euclidean LCD codes and Euclidean self-orthogonal codes which are left $D_{2n}$-codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. In particular, we provide an explicit representation and a precise enumeration for these two subclasses of left $D_{2n}$-codes and self-dual left $D_{2n}$-codes, respectively. Moreover, we give a direct and simple method for determining the encoder (generator matrix) of any left $D_{2n}$-code over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, and present several numerical examples to illustrative our applications.
