Abstract:This note, by applying Dirichlet's approximation theorem, achieves an upper bound for Hornich's problem, the problem to determine the smallest number of nonoverlapping unit spheres which can block all the light rays starting from the center of a fixed one.

Abstract:Given a function f > 0 on the unit sphere n +1 , the Minkowski problem in the sphere concerns the existence of convex hypersurfaces M subset of(n +1) such that the Gauss curvature of M at z is equal to f (v( z )), where v(z) is the unit outer normal of M at z . We use the min-max principle and the Gauss curvature flow to prove that there are at least two solutions to the problem. By using the rotating plane method in the sphere, we also show the existence of a rotationally symmetric and monotone function f such that there are exactly two solutions.

Abstract:We control the number of critical points of a height function arising from the Nash isometric embedding of a compact Riemanniann-manifoldM. The Ln/2 curvature norm ∥R∥ and a similar scalar ∥R∥ are introduced and their integralR(M) andR(M) overM. We prove thatR(M) is bounded below by a constant depending only onn and the Betti numbers ofM. Thus a new sphere theorem is proved by eliminating allith Betti numbers fori = 1, .…n −1. The emphasis is that our sphere theorem imposes no restriction on the range of curvature.

A lower bound on the number of colours needed to nicely colour a sphere

Abstract:The Hadwiger--Nelson problem is about determining the chromatic number of the plane (CNP), defined as the minimum number of colours needed to colour the plane so that no two points of distance 1 have the same colour. In this paper we investigate a related problem for spheres and we use a few natural restrictions on the colouring. Thomassen showed that with these restrictions, the chromatic number of all manifolds satisfying certain properties (including the plane and all spheres with a large enough radius) is at least 7. We prove that with these restrictions, the chromatic number of any sphere with a large enough radius is at least 8. This also gives a new lower bound for the minimum colours needed for colouring the 3-dimensional space with the same restrictions.

Abstract:Harnack inequality plays a key role for the homeomorphism between the Martin boundaries and the self-similar sets. In this note, we study a transition probability on the finite words space of an iterated function system, whose invariant set is the unit interval. We present the necessary and sufficient condition for the transition probability to satisfy the Harnack inequality.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

On the limiting Horn inequalities

Abstract:The Horn inequalities characterise the possible spectra of triples of $n$-by-$n$ Hermitian matrices $A+B=C$. We study integral inequalities that arise as limits of Horn inequalities as $n \to \infty$. These inequalities are parametrised by the points of an infinite-dimensional convex body, the asymptotic Horn system $\mathscr{H}$, which can be regarded as a topological closure of the countable set of Horn inequalities for all finite $n$. We prove three main results. The first shows that arbitrary points of $\mathscr{H}$ can be well approximated by specific sets of finite-dimensional Horn inequalities. The second is a quantitative result on the redundancy of the Horn inequalities in an infinite-dimensional setting. Concretely, the Horn inequalities for finite $n$ are indexed by certain sets $T^n_r$ with $1 \le r \le n-1$; we show that if $(n_k)_{k \ge 1}$ and $(r_k)_{k \ge 1}$ are any sequences such that $(r_k / n_k)_{k \ge 1}$ is a dense subset of $(0,1)$, then the Horn inequalities indexed by the sets $T^{n_k}_{r_k}$ are sufficient to imply all of the others. Our third main result shows that $\mathscr{H}$ has a remarkable self-characterisation property. Namely, membership in $\mathscr{H}$ is determined by the very inequalities corresponding to the points of $\mathscr{H}$ itself. To illuminate this phenomenon, we sketch a general theory of sets that characterise themselves in the sense that they parametrise their own membership criteria, and we consider the question of what further information would be needed in order for this self-characterisation property to determine the Horn inequalities uniquely.

Under suitable conditions of h ( x , u , ∇ u ) (see ( A ) , ( H 1 ) and ( H 2 ) in Section 3), we get a priori estimates for positive solutions to problem (0.1). By making use of these estimates and the continuous method, we further get some existence results for positive solutions to problem (0.1) when 0 < p < 1 , or 2 α + 1 < p < 2 ∗ . Effects of the term a + b ‖∇u‖ 2 2 α on the solution set of problem (0.1) can be seen in an example given in Section 2.

Abstract:By using the properties of trigonometric sums and the estimates of n dimensional Kloosterman sums, we study the high-dimensional D. H. Lehmer problem over incomplete intervals. First we generalize the previous results in [11] by presenting some sharp asymptotic formulae. Then with the aid of a more elementary method, we improve the error terms in a straight-forward manner.

Abstract:This is a very brief report on recent developments on the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system and minimal cones in Euclidean spaces. We shall mainly focus on two directions: (1) Further systematic developments after Lawson-Osserman's paper \cite{l-o} on the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs of high codimensions. Aspects including non-existence, non-uniqueness and irregularity properties of solutions have been explored from different points of view. (2) Complexities and varieties of area-minimizing cones in high codimensions. We shall mention interesting history and exhibit some recent results which successfully furnished new families of minimizing cones of different types.

A note on a recent attempt to solve the second part of Hilbert's 16th Problem

Abstract:For a given natural number $n$, the second part of Hilbert's 16th Problem asks whether there exists a finite upper bound for the maximum number of limit cycles that planar polynomial vector fields of degree $n$ can have. This maximum number of limit cycle, denoted by $H(n)$, is called the $n$th Hilbert number. It is well-established that $H(n)$ grows asymptotically as fast as $n^2 \log n$. A direct consequence of this growth estimation is that $H(n)$ cannot be bounded from above by any quadratic polynomial function of $n$. Recently, the authors of the paper [Exploring limit cycles of differential equations through information geometry unveils the solution to Hilbert's 16th problem. Entropy, 26(9), 2024] affirmed to have solved the second part of Hilbert's 16th Problem by claiming that $H(n) = 2(n - 1)(4(n - 1) - 2)$. Since this expression is quadratic in $n$, it contradicts the established asymptotic behavior and, therefore, cannot hold. In this note, we further explore this issue by discussing some counterexamples.

The explicit expression of the multiple times convolution of the probability density functions that we should use is very complicated. But here we do not need its whole explicit expression. We just need only a part of the information, and this fact make it possible to derive the general expression of the volume of hypersphere.

Abstract:Let n points be placed on a closed convex domain on the plane, no three points on a straight line. A conjecture by H. A. Heilbronn (before 1950) stated that on the convex domain of unit area the smallest triangle defined by these points has an area not larger than O(n^-2). Here is shown a construction of a set of n points on a unit circle where any of the triangles have an area not less than O(n^-1.5 * (log n)^-5/2).

Abstract:We prove sphere packing density bounds in hyperbolic space (and more generally irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type), which were conjectured by Cohn and Zhao and generalize Euclidean bounds by Cohn and Elkies. We work within the Bowen-Radin framework of packing density and replace the use of the Poisson summation formula in the proof of the Euclidean bound by Cohn and Elkies with an analogous formula arising from methods used in the theory of mathematical quasicrystals.

Abstract:We prove that among all doubly connected domains of $\R^n$ bounded by two spheres of given radii, $Z(t)$, the trace of the heat kernel with Dirichlet boundary conditions, achieves its minimum when the spheres are concentric (i.e., for the spherical shell). The supremum is attained when the interior sphere is in contact with the outer <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://sphere.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is shown to be a special case of a more general theorem characterizing the optimal placement of a spherical obstacle inside a convex domain so as to maximize or minimize the trace of the Dirichlet heat kernel. In this case the minimizing position of the center of the obstacle belongs to the "heart" of the domain, while the maximizing situation occurs either in the interior of the heart or at a point where the obstacle is in contact with the outer boundary. Similar statements hold for the optimal positions of the obstaclefor any spectral property that can be obtained as a positivity-preserving or positivity-reversing transform of $Z(t)$,including the spectral zeta function and, through it, the regularized determinant.

Abstract:In this paper we study the properties of quasi-harmonic spheres from $\mathbb {R}^m, m>2$. We show that if the universal covering $\tilde{N}$ of N admits a nonnegative strictly convex function $\rho $ with the exponential growth condition $\rho (y)\le C\exp \left( \frac{1}{4}\tilde{d}(y)^{2/m}\right) $ where $\tilde{d}(y)$ is the distance function on $\tilde{N}$, then N does not admit a quasi-harmonic sphere, which generalize Li-Zhu’s result (Calc Var Partial Diff Equ 37(3–4):441–460, 2010). We also show that if u is a quasi-harmonic sphere, then the property that u is of finite energy ($\int _{\mathbb {R}^m}e(u)e^{-\left|x\right|^2/4}\mathrm dx<\infty $) is equivalent to the property that u satisfies the large energy condition ($\lim _{R\rightarrow \infty }R^{m}e^{-R^2/4}\int _{B_R(0)}e(u)e^{-\left|x\right|^2/4}\,\mathrm dx=0$).

Abstract:A classical problem posed in 1992 by Huijsmans and de Pagter asks whether, for every positive operator on a Banach lattice with spectrum , the inequality holds true. While the problem remains unsolved in its entirety, a positive solution is known in finite dimensions. In the broader context of ordered Banach spaces, Drnovšek provided an infinite-dimensional counterexample. In this note, we demonstrate the existence of finite-dimensional counterexamples, specifically on the ice cream cone and on a polyhedral cone in . On the other hand, taking inspiration from the notion of -isometries, we establish that each counterexample must contain a Jordan block of size at least .
