Abstract:Assessment of potential impacts of climate change on water resources is becoming more important in recent decades. Weather generators, which can create synthetic daily weather data of long periods of time, are very common tools to deal with climate change issues. However, most weather generators like SDSM, normally ignore the spatial correlations of hydro-meteorological data. In this study, a stochastic model, GiST is used to generate daily rainfall and temperature for multiple sites in Qiantang River Basin, China. The main difference between GiST and other weather generators is the consideration of spatial correlations among sites. The historical climate data (1961-1990) is used to calibrate the correlation matrix, and change factors are calculated based on the baseline (1961-1990) climate and future (2011-2040) climate. Future daily weather data (temperature and precipitation) are then downscaled based on Scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 using Hadgem2-ES. The results show that historical climate closely matched its simulated counterpart. For both rainfall amounts and temperature, the correlation coefficients calculated from the observed pair-wise climate data and the ones from GiST-simulated synthetic data show good consistence. The outputs from the future period are compared with the historical climate data. In general, the following conclusions are drawn. First, the relative changes of mean monthly minimum temperature are higher than those of mean monthly maximum temperature. Mean temperature changes slightly except Tianmushan. Second, the future annual precipitation decreases slightly under the four scenarios at Hangzhou, Huangshan and Jinhua while a contrary trend can be observed at Tianmushan and Tunxi. At Shengxian, different patterns of change can be found under the four scenarios. Monthly precipitations at Hangzhou, Jinhua decrease under most conditions while it increases in summer and decreases in winter at Tianmushan and Tunxi.

Abstract:The frequency and magnitude of extreme meteorological or hydrological events such as floods and droughts in China have been influenced by global climate change. The water problem due to increasing frequency and magnitude of extreme events in the humid areas has gained great attention in recent years. However, the main challenge in the evaluation of climate change impact on extreme events is that large uncertainty could exist. Therefore, this paper first aims to model possible impacts of climate change on regional extreme precipitation (indicated by 24-h design rainfall depth) at seven rainfall gauge stations in the Qiantang River Basin, East China. The Long Ashton Research Station-Weather Generator is adopted to downscale the global projections obtained from general circulation models (GCMs) to regional climate data at site scale. The weather generator is also checked for its performance through three approaches, namely KolmogorovSmirnov test, comparison of L-moment statistics and 24-h design rainfall depths. Future 24-h design rainfall depths at seven stations are estimated using Pearson Type III distribution and L-moment approach. Second, uncertainty caused by three GCMs under various greenhouse gas emission scenarios for the future periods 2020s (20112030), 2055s (20462065) and 2090s (20802099) is investigated. The final results show that 24-h design rainfall depth increases in most stations under the three GCMs and emission scenarios. However, there are large uncertainties involved in the estimations of 24-h design rainfall depths at seven stations because of GCM, emission scenario and other uncertainty sources. At Hangzhou Station, a relative change of -16% to 113% can be observed in 100y design rainfall depths. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Global warming brings a huge challenge to society and human being. Understanding historic and future potential climate change will be beneficial to regional crop, forest, and water management. This study aims to analyze the precipitation and temperature changes in the historic period and future period 2021–2050 in the Xiangjiang River Basin, China. The Mann–Kendall rank test for trend and change point analysis was used to analyze the changes in trend and magnitude based on historic precipitation and temperature time series. Four global climate models (GCMs) and a statistical downscaling approach, LARS-WG, were used to estimate future precipitation and temperature under RCP4.5. The results show that annual precipitation in the basin is increasing, although not significant, and will probably continue to increase in the future on the basis of ensemble projections of four GCMs. Temperature is increasing in a significant way and all GCMs projected continuous temperature increase in the future. There will be more extreme events in the future, including both extreme precipitation and temperature.

Abstract:Paleoclimatic research can provide critical insight on causes of change in the East Asian monsoon, which influences the lives of 1.6 billion people today. In this study, we use paleo-climatic indexes from Chinese loess deposits, which have clear climatic implications and are independently dated, to reconstruct the monsoon precipitation since 21 ka. Our results show that monsoon precipitation persistently decreased from 21 ka to ca. 8 ka, and increased after ca. 8 ka, with a precipitation peak at 8-3 ka. These changes in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation are synchronous with changes in high-northern-latitude ice volume/ice cover and atmospheric CO2. These new data suggest that variation of the monsoon precipitation was probably driven by CO2-forced high-northern-latitude temperature changes, shifting the location of the intertropical convergence zone that dominates monsoon precipitation. Our TraCE-21000 modeling experiment supports this interpretation.

Abstract:The centennial-scale variation of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) circulation has a long-term impact on regional ecosystems, agriculture and water resources. However, the feature and underlying mechanism of the centennial-scale variation in the monsoon system are not well-understood, largely due to the limited meteorological instrumental observation. This study concurrently harnesses the outcomes of both climate proxy records and climate model simulations to analyze century-scale fluctuations in the EASM. Our study reveals a significant negative correlation between the EASM and Northern Hemisphere (NH) temperatures during the past millennium, followed by an opposing trend in 20th century. On the contrary, projections under the RCP8.5 scenario indicate a synchronous rise in both EASM intensity and temperatures in the 21st century. The fluctuating relationship between temperatures and EASM is attributed to the internal variability in climate system. Spatially, we found that the main modes of precipitation in Eastern China during the pre-instrumental period are the dipole mode or the monopole mode, while a shift in the dominant mode of precipitation over Eastern China from the dipole mode during the Current Warm Period (20th century) to the monopole mode in the future (21st century), modulated by sea surface temperature anomalies. These insights into the centennial variation of the EASM, both temporally and spatially, are critical for enhancing predictive models and formulating monsoonal climate adaptation strategies.

A MODELING STUDY ON DROUGHT AND FLOOD EVENTS OF THE LAST 530 YEARS IN EAST CHINA

Abstract:Severe drought and flood events of the last 530 years in East China were investigated by a 1000-yr global climate model CCSM2.0.1. The simulated summer precipitation and drought and flood events are, on an interdecadal scale,consistent with the historical records. There were three severe drought events lasting 5 years and more occurred in 1483 ～ 1488, 1635 ～ 1645 and 1964 ～ 1968 and four severe flood events lasting 5 years or more occurred in 1529 ～ 1533, 1749 ～ 1753, 1926 ～ 1932 and 1978 ～ 1984. Especially,the three drought events and the 1749 ～ 1753 flood event are very clear and definite in the historical records. As to the three drought events,they first developed in North China and then expanded southward to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, while as to the 1749 ～ 1753 flood event,it first developed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and then expanded northward to North China. It is found that such lasting drought and flood events can be attributed to influence of summer monsoon,whereas the Western Pacific subtropical high pressure plays only a minor role.

Abstract:Our understanding on the spatial-temporal patterns of climatic variability over the last few millennia in the East Asian monsoon-dominated northern China (NC), and its role at a macro-scale in affecting the prosperity and depression of Chinese dynasties is limited. Quantitative high-resolution, regionally-synthesized palaeoclimatic reconstructions as well as simulations, and numerical analyses of their relationships with various fine-scale, numerical agro-ecological, social-economic, and geo-political historical records during the period of China's history, are presented here for NC. We utilize pollen data together with climate modeling to reconstruct and simulate decadal- to centennial-scale variations in precipitation or temperature for NC during the last 2200 years (-200–2000 AD). We find an overall cyclic-pattern (wet/warm or dry/cold) in the precipitation and temperature anomalies on centennial- to millennial-scale that can be likely considered as a representative for the entire NC by comparison with other related climatic records. We suggest that solar activity may play a key role in driving the climatic fluctuations in NC during the last 22 centuries, with its quasi ∼100, 50, 23, or 22-year periodicity clearly identified in our climatic reconstructions. We employ variation partitioning and redundancy analysis to quantify the independent effects of climatic factors on accounting for the total variation of 17 fine-grained numerical Chinese historical records. We quantitatively illustrate that precipitation (67.4%) may have been more important than temperature (32.5%) in causing the overall agro-ecological and macro-geopolitical shifts in imperial China with NC as the central ruling region and an agricultural heartland over the last 2200 years.

Abstract:The numerical simulation experiment of climate at Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 ka BP)in China is made by using an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) coupled with land surface processes (AGCM+SSiB) and earth orbital parameters and boundary forcing conditions at 21 ka. The modeled climate features are compared with reconstructed conditions at 21 ka from palco-lake data and pollen data. The results show that the simulated climate conditions at 21 ka in China are fairly comparable with palco-climatological data. The climate features at 21 ka in China from the experiment are characterized by a drier in the east and a wetter in the west and in the Tibetan Plateau as well. According to the analysis of distribution of pressure and precipitation, as well as the intensity of atmospheric circulation at 21 ka, monsoon circulation in eastern Asia was significantly weak comparing with the present. In the Tibetan Plateau, the intensity of summer monsoon circulation was strengthened, and winter monsoon was a little stronger than the present.The simulation with given forcing boundary conditions, especially the different vegetation coverage, can reproduce the climate condition at the LGM in China, and therefore provides dynamical mechanisms on the climate changes at 21 ka.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of global warming, assessing the effects of climate change on hydrological processes is crucial for local water resource management. Variations in temperature, precipitation, and runoff at four different timescales in the Fuhe River Basin were evaluated based on observational data collected from 1960 to 2020 using the Mann–Kendall test. The findings indicated significant increases in average temperatures for the annual, flood season, and non-flood season periods, rising by 0.0197, 0.0145, and 0.0278 °C every annum, respectively (p 0.1). The trend in flood season runoff was also non-significantly upward, whereas annual runoff and non-flood season runoff displayed non-significant downward trends (p > 0.1). Flood season temperature decreased with increasing altitude, exhibiting a significant Pearson correlation coefficient of −0.744 at the 0.01 level. Conversely, annual, flood, and non-flood season precipitation significantly increased with increasing altitude, with Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.678 at the 0.01 level, 0.695 at the 0.01 level, and 0.558 at the 0.05 significance level, respectively. Precipitation and runoff exhibited similar trends throughout the year, increasing initially and then decreasing over time, reaching maximum values in June. Climate change is likely responsible for the hydrological alterations in the study basin. The findings of the study could provide references for water resource management decisions in the Fuhe River Basin.

Abstract:In this paper,the datasets of HadCM2 and ECHAM4 are employed to analyze the trend of surface air temperature and precipitation changes over China in the 21st century under the transient scenarios of the equivalent CO_2 increase 1 percent per year(IS92a)in concentrations from 1990 onward.It is shown that the surface air temperature increments would reach 56 at the end of the 21stcentury relative to climate baseline(1961-1990).Meanwhile the precipitation would also increase,though exists the great fluctuations compared with the surface air temperature.It is indicated that the precipitation would obviously increase in South China,over 0.9 mm/d and 0.6 mm/d anticipated by HadCM2 and ECHAM4,respectively.It is presented from the comparisons of the performances of HadCM2 and ECHAM4 that ECHAM4 overestimates the surface air temperature relative to HadCM2;while HadCM2 overestimates the precipitation.However,the overall trend of HadCM2 is similar with ECHAM4 anticipations.
Precipitation Variation over Eastern China and Arid Central Asia During the Past Millennium and Its Possible Mechanism: Perspectives from PMIP3 Experiments

Abstract:Multiproxies suggest a tripole humidity pattern in Asia in the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA, 950–1250 A.D.) and Little Ice Age (LIA, 1500–1800 A.D.), with drier (wetter) conditions in arid central Asia (ACA), wetter (drier) conditions in North China, and drier (wetter) conditions in South China. However, the mechanisms behind this reconstructed humidity variation remain unclear. In this study, we investigate Asian humidity changes by using the last millennium simulations of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase III (PMIP3). The results indicate that only one out of nine PMIP3 models (Meteorological Research Institute Coupled ocean‐atmosphere General Circulation Model version 3) can well reproduce the reconstructed humidity pattern. This model indicates that the tripole humidity pattern is mainly caused by precipitation changes in spring and summer and is prominent in the past millennium on a multidecadal time scale. In spring, the reduction (increase) of precipitation in ACA and South China is attributed to the northward (southward) shift of the westerlies and a weakened (strengthened) western Pacific subtropical high in the MCA (LIA). In summer, precipitation over ACA decreases (increases) due to a local descending (ascending) motion, while abundant (deficient) precipitation over eastern China results from the enhanced (depressed) summer monsoon. Moreover, we suggest that a La Niña (El Niño)‐like condition may be the primary reason the tripole precipitation pattern was maintained in the MCA (LIA), although a warmer (colder) North Pacific and North Atlantic also play a role. The mechanisms must be further validated since most simulations fail to reproduce the reconstructed humidity condition in the MCA/LIA, making model‐model comparisons difficult.
