Abstract:This review explores the role of thiacalix[4]arene in stabilizing silver, copper, and bimetallic nanoclusters, addressing key challenges in catalysis, sensing, and biomedicine. It examines the structural properties and binding mechanisms of thiacalix[4]arene, discusses its applications in enhancing nanocluster stability and efficiency and evaluates the current challenges and future potential in nanoscience advancements. Coinage metal nanoclusters (NCs), comprising a few to several hundred atoms, are prized for their size‐dependent properties crucial in catalysis, sensing, and biomedicine. However, their practical application is often hindered by stability and reactivity challenges. Thiacalixarene, a macrocyclic ligand, shows promise in stabilizing silver, copper, and bimetallic NCs, enhancing their structural integrity and chemical stability. This investigation delves into the unique properties of thiacalix[4]arene and their role in bolstering NC stability, catalytic efficiency, and sensing capabilities. The current challenges and future prospects are critically evaluated, underscoring the transformative impact of thiacalix[4]arene in nanoscience. Abstract:Surface organic ligands are critical for the formation and properties of atomically precise metal nanoclusters. In contrast to the conventionally used protective ligands such as thiolates and phosphines, thiacalix[4]arene has been used in the synthesis of a silver nanocluster, [Ag35(H2L)2(L)(C≡CBu(t))16](SbF6)3, (H4L, p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]-arene). This is the first structurally determined calixarene-protected metal nanocluster. The chelating and macrocyclic effects make the thiacalix[4]arene a rigid shell that protects the silver core. Upon addition or removal of one silver atom, the Ag35 cluster can be transformed to Ag36 or Ag34 species, and the optical properties are changed accordingly. The successful use of thiacalixarene in the synthesis of well-defined silver nanoclusters suggests a bright future for metal nanoclusters protected by macrocyclic ligands.

Abstract:Silver nanoclusters have received unprecedented attention in cluster science owing to their promising functionalities and intriguing physical/chemical properties. However, essential instability significantly impedes their extensive applications. We herein propose a strategy termed "surface environment complication" to endow Ag-29 nanoclusters with high robustness. The Ag-29(S-Adm)(18)(PPh3)(4) nanocluster with monodentate PPh3 ligands was extremely unstable and uncrystallizable. By substituting PPh3 with bidentate PPh(2)py with dual coordination sites (i.e., P and N), the Ag-29 cluster framework was twisted because of the generation of N-Ag interactions, and three NO3 ligands were further anchored onto the nanocluster surface, yielding a new Ag-29(S-Adm)(15)(NO3)(3)(PPh(2)py)(4) nanocluster with high stability. The metal-control or ligand-control effects on stabilizing the Ag-29 nanocluster were further evaluated. Besides, Ag-29(S-Adm)(15)(NO3)(3)(PPh(2)py)(4) followed a unique packing mode in the supracrystal lattice with several intercluster channels, which has yet been observed in other M-29 cluster crystals. Overall, this work presents a new approach (i.e., surface environment complication) for tailoring the surface environment and improving the stability of metal nanoclusters.
Ligand Engineering Toward the Trade-Off Between Stability and Activity in Cluster Catalysis

Abstract:AbstractWe report the structures, stability and catalysis properties of two Ag21 nanoclusters, namely [Ag21(H2BTCA)3(O2PPh2)6]SbF6 (1) and [Ag21(C≡CC6H3‐3,5‐R2)6(O2PPh2)10]SbF6 (2) (H4BTCA=p‐tert‐butylthiacalix[4]arene, R=OMe). Both Ag21 structures possess an identical icosahedral kernel that is surrounded by eight peripheral Ag atoms. Single‐crystal structural analysis and ESI‐MS revealed that 1 is an 8‐electron cluster and 2 has four free electrons. Theoretical results show that the P‐symmetry orbitals are found as HOMO‐1 and HOMO states in 1, and the frontier unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO, LUMO+1 and LUMO+2) show D‐character, indicating 1 is a superatomic cluster with an electronically closed shell 1S21P6, while 2 has an incomplete shell configuration 1S21P2. These two Ag21 clusters show superior stability under ambient conditions, and 1 is robust even at 90 °C in toluene and under oxidative conditions (30 % H2O2). Significantly, 2 exhibits much higher activity than 1 as catalyst in the reduction of 4‐nitrophenol. This work demonstrates that ligands can influence the electronic structures of silver clusters, and further affect their stability and catalytic performance.
Ultrasmall Size Silver Clusters: Molecular-like Structural Simulation and Absorption Spectra Calculation

Abstract:In this work,the geometric structures,electronic structures,and absorption spectra of various neutral and positively charged ultrasmall size silver clusters([Agm]n+,m=2-8,n=0-2),have been investigated using densi-ty functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory.The simulation results demonstrate that the elec-tronic energy level structures and absorption spectra of the ultrasmall size silver clusters are influenced by multiple factors,including size,symmetry,open-shell and closed-shell systems,and electric charges of clusters.Further-more,average binding energy calculations indicate that an increase in the size of neutral ultrasmall size silver clus-ters results in a gradual enhancement in their stability.However,positively charged ultrasmall size silver clusters are subject to the parity oscillations phenomenon,which means that the dominant configuration in the anionic polyhedral network is not necessarily the lowest-energy configuration.This study has led to the construction of a database of the geometrical structures,electronic structures,and absorption spectra of ultrasmall size silver clusters.This dataset has been created to identify the characteristic luminescence of ultrasmall size silver clusters in specific configurations in fluorescent glasses.Furthermore,the database will provide theoretical support data for expanding the structural and spectroscopic studies of ultrasmall size silver clusters in other types of inorganic as well as organic ligands.

Single crystal structural determination reveals that they have a centered anticuboctahedral Ag13 kernel. Such a kernel is observed for the first time in a coinage metal nanocluster. Abstract:Engineering the surface of the metal clusters with the core structure maintained and tuning their luminescence in a wide range is still a challenge in the nanomaterial research. We modified six mono‐pyridyl ligands with different electronic effects (conjugation effect or induction effect) on a superatomic silver cluster [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)8] (denoted as Ag 14 ) through in situ site‐specific surface engineering, and obtained the corresponding clusters [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)6(L1/L2)2] (denoted as NC‐1, 2 , L1/L2 = 4‐Acetylpyridine/4‐Carboxypyridine) and [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(L3/L4/L5/L6)8] (denoted as NC‐3, 4, 5, 6 , L3/L4/L5/L6 = 4‐Phenylpyridine/4‐(1‐Naphthyl)pyridine/9‐(4‐pyridine)anthracene/9‐(4‐ pyridine)pyrene). Abstract:Illustrating molecualr strucure of metal nanoclusters with the protection of multiple ligands is the prequisite to understand strucure-property relationships of nano or bulk materials with hybrid interfaces. Reported herein is the synthesis, total structure and electronic strucure analysis of a new Ag/Cu alloy nanocluster with triple-ligand protection. The cluster with the formula of Ag10Cu16(C8H9S)16(PPh3)4(CF3CO2)8 has been attained in one-pot in a simple way. X-ray single crystal analysis displays its unique metal framework and more importantly rich interface structures. The ligands of phosphine, thioate and carboxylic acid are coordinated to the surface of the cluster in distinctive modes. The electronic structure of the cluster has been revealed by density functional theory, showing that it is a 2-electron superatom with jellium configurations of 1S2. In good accodance with the closure of geometric and electronic structures, the cluster exhibits moderate stability, which makes it a candidate for further application in many fields.

Abstract:Three silver cluster complexes were synthesized with carbon network ligands as inner templates, including [(C C)(2)C=C(C C)(2)](4-), [C-6(C C)(6)](6-) and [C6H(C C)(5)](5-). The resulting clusters 1-3 have been characterized by X-ray crystallography and other techniques. This study showcases a promising methodology to acquire intricate all-carbon units and provides a platform to investigate their chemistry.

Abstract:Mono-layer protected metal clusters comprise a rich class of molecular systems, and are promising candidate materials for a variety of applications. While a growing number of protected nanoclusters have been synthe- sized and characterized in crystalline forms, their dynamical behavior in solution, including pre-nucleation cluster formation, is not well understood due to limitations both in characterization and first-principles mod- eling techniques. Recent advancements in machine-learned interatomic potentials are rapidly enabling the study of complex interactions such as dynamical behavior and reactivity at the nanoscale. Here, we develop an Au-S-C-H Atomic Cluster Expansion (ACE) interatomic potential for efficient and accurate molecular dynamics simulations of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (Aun (SCH3)m ). Trained on more than 30,000 density functional theory calculations of gold nanoclusters, the interatomic potential exhibits ab initio level accuracy in energies and forces, and replicates nanocluster dynamics including thermal vibration and chiral inversion. Long dynamics simulations (up to 0.1 μs time scale) reveal a novel mechanism explaining the ther- mal instability of neutral Au25(SR)18 clusters. Specifically, we observe multiple stages of isomerization of the Au25(SR)18 cluster, including a novel chiral isomer. Additionally we simulate coalescence of two Au25(SR)18 clusters and observe series of new clusters where the formation mechanisms are critically mediated by ligand exchange in the form of [Au–S]n rings.

Abstract:Due to the stability issue, It is difficult to prepare a silver nanocluster bearing functional sites, especially at a large scale. We report the synthesis and structure of a stable silver nanocluster bearing multiple surface aldehyde groups [Ag21(Ph2PO2)10(p‐CHOPhC≡C)6]SbF6, which allows for postsynthesis modification such as surface functionalization through aldimine condensation to give homochiral clusters. Remarkably, the preparation of this cluster can be done in ~90% high yield at gram scale, which facilitates further studies and potential applications. Through DFT calculations and geometric structure analysis, the high stability of this cluster is attributed to the geometric closure and electronic structure. This is the first time that an effective one‐pot method has been developed to synthesize functional silver nanoclusters in high yield. The title cluster will be useful in the development of a variety of cluster‐based materials.

Stepwise Assembly of Ag 42 Nanocalices Based on a Mo VI -Anchored Thiacalix[4]arene Metalloligand

Abstract:Metalloligand strategy has been well recognized in the syntheses of heterometallic coordination polymers; however, such a strategy used in the assembly of silver nanoclusters is not broadly available. Herein, we report the stepwise syntheses of a family of halogen-templated Ag42 nanoclusters (Ag42c-Ag42f) based on MoVI-anchored p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H4TC4A) as a metalloligand (hereafter named MoO3-TC4A). X-ray crystallography demonstrates that they are similar C3-symmetric silver-organic nanocalices capped by six MoO3-TC4A metalloligands, which are evenly distributed up and down the base of 42 silver atoms. These nanoclusters can be disassembled to six bowl-shaped [Ag11(MoO3-TC4A)(RS)3] secondary building units (SBUs, R = Et or nPr), which are fused together in a face-sharing fashion surrounding Cl- or Br- as a central anion template. The electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) indicates their high stabilities in solution and verifies the formation of the MoO3-TC4A metalloligand, thereby rationalizing the overall stepwise assembly process for them. Moreover, Ag42c shows lower cytotoxicity and better activity against the HepG-2 cell line than MCF-7 and BGC-823. These results not only exemplify the effectiveness of a thiacalix[4]arene-based metalloligand in the assembly of silver nanoclusters but also give us profound insight about the step-by-step assembly process in silver nanoclusters.

Abstract:Whether and how nanoclusters possessing a rich diversity of possible geometric configurations can transform from one structural type to another are critical issues in cluster science. Here we demonstrate an icosahedral-to-cuboctahedral structural transformation of Au nanoclusters driven by changing the chemical environment. For icosahedral Au-13 clusters protected by a mixture of dodecanethiol and triphenylphosphine ligands, solvent exchange of ethanol by hexane leads to quick selective desorption of the thiolate layers from the cluster surface. The surviving Au cores then undergo a much slower energy-minimization process via structural rearrangement, stabilized in the cuboctahedral structure and protected by triphenylphosphine in the hexane environment. In response to the dramatically changed atomic structure, the character of the electronic structure of the Au clusters is converted from semiconducting to metallic. This work addresses the structure property correlation and its strong dependence on the chemical environment for metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:A facile strategy that directly reduces alkynyl-silver precursors and copper salts for the synthesis of bimetallic nanoclusters using the weak reducing agent Ph2SiH2 is demonstrated. Two alkynyl-protected concentric-shell nanoclusters, (Ph4P)(2)[Ag22Cu12(C & EQUIV;CR)(28)] and (Ph4P)(3)[Ag42Cu12Cl(C & EQUIV;CR)(36)] (Ag22Cu12 and Ag42Cu12Cl, R=bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), were successfully obtained and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry. For the first time, a hybrid 55-atom two-shell Mackay icosahedron was found in Ag42Cu12Cl, which is icosahedral M54Cl instead of M-55. The incorporation of a chloride in the metal icosahedron contributes to the stability of the cluster from both electronic and geometric aspects. Alkynyl ligands show various binding-modes including linear "RC & EQUIV;C-Cu-C & EQUIV;CR" staple motifs.

Abstract:Recently, silver nanoclusters have garnered considerable attention after the high-yield synthesis and crystallization of a thiolate-protected silver nanocluster, Na4Ag44(SR)30 (SR, protecting thiolate ligand). One intriguing feature of Na4Ag44(SR)30 is its outstanding stability and resistance to chemical reactions, in striking difference from other silver nanostructures whose susceptibility to oxidation (tarnishing) has been commonly observed and thus limits their applications in nanotechnology. Herein, we report the mechanism on the ultrahigh stability of Na4Ag44(SR)30 by uncovering how coordinating solvents interact with the Na4Ag44(SR)30 nanocluster at the atomic scale. Through synchrotron X-ray experiments and theoretical calculations, it was found that strongly coordinating aprotic solvents interact with surface Ag atoms, particularly between ligand bundles, which compresses the Ag core and relaxes surface metal-ligand interactions. Furthermore, water was used as a cosolvent to demonstrate that semiaqueous conditions play an important role in protecting exposed surface regions and can further influence the local structure of the silver nanocluster itself. Notably, under semiaqueous conditions, aprotic coordinating solvent molecules preferentially remain on the metal surface while water molecules interact with ligands, and ligand bundling persisted across the varied solvation conditions. This work offers an atomic level mechanism on the ultrahigh stability of the Na4Ag44(SR)30 nanoclusters from the nanocluster-coordinating solvent interaction perspective, and implies that nanocluster-solvent interactions should be carefully considered moving forward for silver nanoclusters, as they can influence the electronic/chemical properties of the nanocluster as well as the surface accessibility of small molecules for potential catalytic and biomedical applications.
