Abstract:One-dimensional molecular chains with Sierpiński triangles as building blocks were prepared on Au(111) and studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Fractal Sierpiński triangles were stabilized by the coordination interaction between 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl) benzene (BPyB) and Co atoms. At low coverages, Sierpiński triangles of high orders were observed. At high coverages, Sierpiński triangles formed two types of one-dimensional molecular chains. The high coverages and matching between molecular size and surface lattices are attributed to the formation of molecular chains.

Abstract:Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (denoted as Au m (SR) n or Au n L m ) have received extensive attention both experimentally and theoretically. Understanding the growth mode of the Au4 unit in Au m (SR) n is of great significance for experimental synthesis and the search for new gold clusters. In this work, we first build six clusters of Au7(AuCl2)3, Au12(AuCl2)4, Au16(AuCl2)6, Au22(AuCl2)6, and Au30(AuCl2)6 with the Au4 unit as the basic building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that these newly designed clusters have high structural and electronic stabilities. Based on chemical bonding analysis, the electronic structures of these clusters follow the superatom network (SAN) model. Inspired by the cluster structures, we further predicted an Au4 two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and a three-dimensional (3D) crystal using graphene and diamond as templates, respectively. The computational results demonstrate that the two structures have high dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stabilities, and both structures exhibit metallic properties according to the band structures calculated at the HSE06 level. The chemical bonding analysis by the solid-state natural density partitioning (SSAdNDP) method indicates that they are superatomic crystals assembled by two electron Au4 - superatoms. With this construction strategy, the new bonding pattern and properties of Au n L m are studied and the structure types of gold are enriched.

Abstract:We have studied the packing structures of C60-derivative PC61BM on the surface of Au(111) in ultrahigh vacuum using scanning tunneling microscopy. The Au(111) has a triangle-like reconstructed surface, which results in some packing structures different from those reported for low coverages. PC61BM can form three types of phase-pure monolayer, namely, the compact straight molecular double-row monolayer, the hexagonal-packing monolayer and the glassy monolayer. The different types of monolayer form for different molecular densities and different annealing temperatures. In addition to the already known inter-molecular interactions (Van de Waals interaction and hydrogen bond), the steric effect of the phenyl-butyric-acid-methyl-ester side tail plays conspicuous role in the molecular self-assembly at high coverages. The steric effect makes it difficult to prepare a hexagonal-packing monolayer at room temperature and decides the instability of the hexagonal-packing monolayer prepared by thermal annealing.

Abstract:We investigate an anthracene derivative, 3(5)-(9-anthryl) pyrazole (ANP), self-assembled on the Au (111) surface by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A chessboard-like network structure composed of ANP molecules is found, covering the whole Au (111) substrate. Our STM results and DFT calculations reveal that the formation of chessboard-like networks originates from a basic unit cell, a tetramer structure, which is formed by four ANP molecules connected through C-H-N hydrogen-bonds. The hydrogen bonds inside each tetramer and the molecular adsorption interaction are fundamentally important in providing a driving force for formation of the supramolecular networks.

Abstract:The adsorption of subphthalocyanine (SubPc) on the Au(111) surface has been studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Depending on coverage and deposition temperature, four different phases have been observed, of which two are coexisting. Spontaneous symmetry breaking inducing mirror domains is observed for all structures. Supramolecular chirality is expressed at different levels and length scale. Our detailed STM study allows conclusions on the origin of polymorphism due to changing coverage and temperature.

Abstract:The controllable packing of functional nanoparticles (NPs) into crystalline lattices is of interest in the development of NP-based materials. Here we demonstrate that the size, morphology and symmetry of such supercrystals can be tailored by adjusting the surface dynamics of their constituent NPs. In the presence of excess tetraethylammonium cations, atomically precise [Au 25 (SR) 18 ] − NPs (where SR is a thiolate ligand) can be crystallized into micrometre-sized hexagonal rod-like supercrystals, rather than as face-centred-cubic superlattices otherwise. Experimental characterization supported by theoretical modelling shows that the rod-like crystals consist of polymeric chains in which Au 25 NPs are held together by a linear SR–[Au(I)–SR] 4 interparticle linker. This linker is formed by conjugation of two dynamically detached SR–[Au(I)–SR] 2 protecting motifs from adjacent Au 25 particles, and is stabilized by a combination of CH ⋯ π and ion-pairing interactions between tetraethylammonium cations and SR ligands. The symmetry, morphology and size of the resulting supercrystals can be systematically tuned by changing the concentration and type of the tetraalkylammonium cations.

Abstract:Molecular tessellations are often discovered serendipitously, and the mechanisms by which specific molecules can be tiled seamlessly to form periodic tessellation remain unclear. Fabrication of molecular tessellation with higher symmetry compared with traditional Bravais lattices promises potential applications as photonic crystals. Here, we demonstrate that highly complex tessellation can be constructed on Au(111) from a single molecular building block, hexakis(4-iodophenyl)benzene (HPBI). HPBI gives rise to two self-assembly phases on Au(111) that possess the same geometric symmetry but different packing densities, on account of the presence of halogen-bonded and halogen-metal coordinated networks. Sub-domains of these phases with self-similarity serve as tiles in the periodic tessellations to express polygons consisting of parallelograms and two types of triangles. Our work highlights the important principle of constructing multiple phases with self-similarity from a single building block, which may constitute a new route to construct complex tessellations.

Abstract:Shape transformation of Au crystals from a {111}-bounded octahedron to a {730}-bounded tetrahexahedron (THH) and then to a {310}-bounded truncated ditetragonal prism (TDP) was achieved by a one pot synthesis method. The transformation of the crystal morphology is the result of the synergistic effect of Ag+ and O-2/Cl . This work not only provides a way to prepare high-index faceted Au micro/nanocrystals, but also provides new insights into the crystal growth habit.

Abstract:In recent years, much progress has been made in aperiodic ordered surface structures such as fractal and quasicrystal that can be synthesized by molecular self-assembly. Here we review the research progress of Sierpinski triangle fractal structures and quasicrystal structures on metal surfaces investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Constructions of Sierpinski triangle fractals with halogen, hydrogen, coordination and covalent bonds were realized on different basal surfaces via changing the precursor types, and complete fifth-order fractals were successfully prepared by a combination of the templating and co-assembly methods overcoming the surface kinetic limitations. Surface molecular quasicrystals were fabricated by utilizing the hydrogen bond between carboxylic acid groups through molecular self-assembly for the first time, and metal-organic coordination quasicrystals were successfully prepared by the coordination between organic molecule and rare-earth atoms.

Abstract:Screw dislocation structure in crystal are origin of symmetry breaking in a wide range of dense phase crystals. Preparation of such analogous structure in framework phase crystals is of great importance in zeolites but still a challenge. On the basis of crystal structure-solving and model building, we found that the two specific intergrowths in MTW zeolite produce this complex fractal and spiral structure. With the structure determined parameters (spiral pitch h, screw angle θ and spatial angle ψ) of Burgers circuit, the screw dislocation structure can be constructed by two different dimensional intergrowth sections. Thus the reported complexity of various dimensions in diverse crystals can be unified.

Abstract:We have observed formation of one-dimensional silica structures of 0.5nm in width on Mo(112) single crystal surface. Combination of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, photoelectron and infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory provides strong evidence for formation of paired rows of corner sharing [SiO4] tetrahedra chemisorbed on a metal substrate.

Abstract:Nanoscale low-dimensional chiral architectures are increasingly receiving scientific interest, because of their potential applications in many fields such as chiral recognition, separation and transformation. Using 6,12-dibromochrysene (DBCh), we successfully constructed and characterized the large-area two-dimensional chiral networks on Au(111) and one-dimensional metal-liganded chiral chains on Cu(111) respectively. The reasons and processes of chiral transformation of chiral networks on Au(111) were analyzed. We used scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) to analyze the electronic state information of this chiral structure. This work combines scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) techniques to achieve ultra-high-resolution characterization of chiral structures on low-dimensional surfaces, which may be applied to the bond analysis of functional nanofilms. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to simulate the adsorption behavior of the molecular and energy analysis in order to verify the experimental results.

Identification of the Au coverage and structure of the Au/Si(111)-5x2 surface

Abstract:We identify the atomic structure of the Au/Si(111)-5x2 surface by using density functional theory calculations. With seven Au atoms per unit cell, our model forms a bona fide 5x2 atomic structure, which is energetically favored over the leading model of Erwin, Barke, and Himpsel [Phys. Rev. B 80, 155409 (2009)] and well reproduces the Y- and V-shaped 5x2 STM images. This surface is metallic with a prominent half-filled band of surface states, mostly localized around the Au-chain area. The correct identification of the atomic and band structure of the clean surface further clarifies the adsorption structure of Si adatoms and the physical origin of the intriguing metal-to-insulator transition driven by Si adatoms.

Abstract:We present a novel approach to adjust the symmetry of Au octahedral nanocrystals in two-dimensional superlattices. By modifying the content of free polymeric ligands added in the nanocrystal solution, we achieve Au nanocrystal superlattices with tip-on-tip arrangements that significantly enhance the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy performance.

Abstract:Using the super valence bond model, a generalized chemical picture for the electronic shells of an Au20 pyramid is given. It is found that Au20 can be viewed to be a superatomic molecule, of which its superatomic 16c-16e core (T) is in D(3)S hybridization bonded with four vertical Au atoms for the molecule-like (TAu4) electronic shell-closure. Based on such a superatom-atom bonding model, TX4 (X = F, Cl, or Br) are predicted to be very stable. Such a superatom-atom T-Au/T-X bonding enriches the scope of chemistry.

Abstract:The interplay between the molecular shape and the intermolecular interaction plays a decisive role in self-assembled structures. Recently, inherent randomness of low ordered assemblies, resulting from lack of short- and long-range periodicities, has attracted significant attention due to the unique structural, electronic, and mechanical properties. Here, we present procrystalline self-assemblies of pentaphenyl cyclopentadienyl derivatives on Ag(111) and Au(111) with scanning tunneling microscopy, operating at 4.3 K under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Two examples, using 5-fold symmetric molecules substituted with methyl or fluorine groups, show that weak interactions, such as π-π stacking, CH-π interactions, and CH···F hydrogen bonding, play a pivotal role in formation of the procrystalline assembly. Our results may give insights into the intricate relationship between the molecular shape and the intermolecular interaction in the formation of non-crystalline assemblies.

Abstract:Fractals play an important role in mathematics, aesthetic, science, and engineering. The representative Sierpiński-triangle fractals have been successfully constructed by V-shape molecules in experiments. The molecular Sierpiński triangles formed by molecules with linear backbones have been theoretically predicted but not experimentally discovered. To achieve this goal in the experiment, we used [1,1′;4′,1′′;4′′,1′′′]-quaterphenyl-3,4′′-dicarbonitrile molecules as building blocks and employed cobalt atoms as cements, then successfully obtained metal-organic Sierpiński triangles with an order up to 2 on the Au(111) surface. There are twenty-four types of three-fold coordination nodes formed between the metal atom and organic ligands via coordinate interactions. The coexistence of various nodes is responsible for that the highest order of Sierpiński triangles is limited to 2.

Abstract:Au-core-Ag-shell triangular bifrustum nanocrystals were synthesized in aqueous solution using a seed-mediated approach. The formation of the Ag layer on the Au nanoprism seeds leads to structures with highly tunable dipole and quadrupole surface plasmon resonances. Discrete dipole approximation calculations show that it is the geometry of these novel structures rather than the addition of a new element that leads to the plasmon tunability. The structure and composition of these novel nanocrystals have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive spectrometry.

Abstract:Elongated tetrahexahedral Au nanocrystals have been grown in high yields using a seed-mediated growth method. Morphological and structural characterizations show that these Au nanocrystals are single-crystalline and enclosed by 24 high-index {037} facets. They are more electrochemically active than octahedral Au nanocrystals that are enclosed by 8 low-index {111} facets. To date, there have been only a few reports of metal nanocrystals that are enclosed exclusively by high-index facets, including trisoctahedral Au nanocrystals enclosed by 24 {122} facets and tetrahexahedral Pt nanocrystals enclosed by 24 {037} facets. Our tetrahexahedral Au nanocrystals will be an important addition to the family of metal nanocrystals that are enclosed exclusively by high-index facets and will also be useful for fundamental catalytic studies on metal nanocrystals.
