Abstract:Pulse compression technique is a particularly competitive method that enables both high spatial resolution and dynamic range in coherent radar and distributed fiber sensing systems. Up to now, the frequency bandwidths of most pulse compression techniques are restricted to tens of GHz. In this paper, we propose an all-optic sub-THz-range linearly chirped optical source and a large-bandwidth detection system to characterize it. Taking advantage of the chromatic dispersion effect, ultrashort optical pulses are stretched to be ~10 ns linearly chirped pulses with sub-THz range, which yields a large time-bandwidth product of 4500, a high compression ratio of 4167 and a chirp rate of 45 GHz/ns. The generated waveform is characterized with high precision thanks to the large detection bandwidth of linear optical sampling technique. A spatial resolution of 120 μm and an extinction ratio of 20.4 dB is demonstrated by using this technique, which paves the way for ultra-high spatial resolution and long range sensing applications such as LIDAR and optical reflectometry.

Abstract:This paper presents a scheme of pulse compression lidar with enhanced electrical modulated bandwidth. An ultra-wideband linear frequency modulated signal with a bandwidth of 50GHz is generated using femtosecond laser and superimposed linear chirp fiber Bragg gratings in the transmitter, which separates the echo of the target from the backward scattered noise with low modulated frequency. An optical pulse compression system based on a negative dispersion fiber Bragg grating is used to compress the ultra-wideband linear frequency modulated signal in the receiver. SNR and range resolution of the proposed scheme are numerically simulated to prove its feasibility. The simulation results indicate that an enhancement of SNR by 15.8dB can be achieved using the scheme, and the range resolution of the scheme increases from 0.68m to 0.0027m. It is therefore concluded that the proposed scheme is suitable for detection through scattering media.

Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) lidar, as a novel remote sensing technique, has been receiving increasing interest in recent years. By combining pulse-compression technique and coherent detection with GI, we propose a new lidar system called pulse-compression GI lidar. Our analytical results, which are backed up by numerical simulations, demonstrate that pulse-compression GI lidar can obtain the target's spatial intensity distribution, range and moving velocity. Compared with conventional pulsed GI lidar system, pulse-compression GI lidar, without decreasing the range resolution, is easy to obtain high single pulse energy with the use of a long pulse, and the mechanism of coherent detection can eliminate the influence of the stray light, which is helpful to improve the detection sensitivity and detection range.

Abstract:We present an integrated pulse compression method for chirped optical pulses based on silicon photonic crystal (PhC) line-defect waveguides. The PhC waveguide structure and dimensions, including the radius of the hole and the thickness of the slab, are carefully designed for effective pulse compression in a short waveguide. In the optimized PhC waveguide, the pulse is effectively compressed and a compression factor, which is defined as the ratio of the output pulse width with respect to the input pulse width, as small as 0.096 is achieved. Analysis shows that the compression effect depends on the initial chirp, the peak power, and the width of the input pulse. In order to realize the best compression, the PhC waveguide length should be carefully chosen to balance the initial chirp, dispersion and nonlinearity of the waveguide.

Abstract:This article presents a pulsed-coherent lidar that uses a 19-GHz pulse-modulated optical carrier and segmented time-of-flight (ToF) detection. The receiver analog frontend (AFE) employs a down-conversion chain that consists of a phase-invariant programmable-gain low-noise amplifier (PI-PGLNA), a sub-harmonic mixer (SHM), and an inverter-based phase-invariant programmable-gain amplifier (PI-PGA). The local oscillator (LO) is generated from a phase-locked loop (PLL) with a ring-type voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) subsamples the down-converted signal, and a digital signal processor (DSP) calculates the coarse, intermediate, and fine ToF. At the receiver input, a narrowband matching is implemented between the p-i-n photodiode and the PI-PGLNA with direct wire bonding. The system achieves 6- precision with a 5-MSa/s sampling rate at a 2.5-m distance. The 2-D scanning is achieved with this lidar with the use of an MEMS mirror.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a monolithic frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) lidar chip with an integrated transceiver array based on lens-assisted beam steering (LABS) technology. It enables beam emitting, steering, receiving, and coherent detecting on a single chip with simultaneous distance and velocity detection. An integrated transceiver is designed with a composite structure of a Bragg grating in the middle and a U-shaped photodetector (PD) surrounding it. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, a chip with 2 × 2 switchable transceiver array is fabricated. A monolithic coherent LABS lidar system with a scanning angle of 2.86° and a scanning speed of 5.3 µs is implemented for 5 m ranging and 0.45 m/s velocity detection.

Abstract:This paper presents a lean subcarrier modulation-based phase-coded coherent lidar system with a non-quadrature receiver and sampling ratio lower than the Nyquist sampling ratio. Specifically, by utilizing the drawbacks of low Doppler tolerance in encoding signals, phase information can be obtained after pulse compression, and the mirror frequency introduced by real sampling can be negligible. Validation experiments based on inverse synthetic aperture lidar are performed, with the corresponding imaging results having a resolution superior to 4 cm, demonstrating our system's efficiency in phase acquisition that is free from frequency aliasing.

Abstract:Atmospheric depolarization ratio and wind velocity are measured simultaneously by a single versatile coherent Doppler lidar (CDL). Backscattering components at parallel and perpendicular polarization states are obtained by using a single balanced detector, adopting time-division multiplexing technique. Thus systematic error induced by the non-uniform response of different detectors in traditional lidars is avoided. The operation mode of the instrument can be switched from polarization CDL to traditional CDL by the user depending on atmospheric conditions and desired performance. As demonstrated, the perpendicular component of the backscattering, usually wasted, not only can be used to retrieve the ADR, but also can be used to improve the carrier to noise ratio in wind detection. In the traditional mode, given a tolerance of 0.5 m/s precision, a detection range of 6 km is achieved by using a 300 ns laser pulse with energy of 100 μJ, where the temporal and spatial resolution of 2 s and 60 m, respectively. Continuous wind detection of the atmospheric boundary layer over 26 hours is presented to demonstrate the robustness and stability of the system. Dynamic evolution and wind structure are recorded.

Abstract:Aiming at the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of coherent lidar echo signal in the far field, a method using pulse coding to coherent wind lidar is proposed to improve the SNR and dynamic range of the system. The encoding and decoding principle of Golay code in coherent lidar system is introduced. The improvement of SNR of the system by using pulse coding technology is analyzed in theory. Based on the atmospheric slices model, the echo signal of coherent Doppler lidar is simulated. Based on the decoding principle, the wind velocity with the pulse coding system is obtained. The simulation results show that, when the Golay code pulse is used as the detection pulse of the coherent lidar, the wind velocity error is less than 3m/s in the range of 0~5.3km with the distance resolution of 60m and the time resolution of 1s. In the same measurement time, the detection distance is improved by 2.5km compared with the traditional pulse coherent lidar, which improves the SNR of the far-field weak signal.

Abstract:Recently a high efficiency all-fiber coherent lidar system at 1.55 μm wavelength is developed to achieve real-time measurements of wind fields. The system employs 80 μJ pulse energy at 10 kHz pulse repetition rate. In addition, the system consists of a fiberbased optical transceiver unit, a 2-axis scanner, and a multicore digital signal processor (DSP) for real-time signal processing. The lidar with compact and waterproof architecture is able to provide mobility, reliability, and ease of field deployment for wind measurements. And the high receiver efficiency provides for measurement range of wind up to 5km. Continuous wind profiles of the planetary boundary layer is presented to demonstrate the robustness and stability of the system.

Abstract:A stepped frequency-modulated continuous-wave lidar system using a dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator with heterodyne detection is demonstrated. The lidar transmitter utilizes a modulation loop circuit composed of an electro-optic dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator and a fiber amplifier, as well as a tunable Fabry-Perot filter to generate a bandwidth-enhanced stepped frequency-modulated signal. In addition, a centroid algorithm is used in the receiver to process the signal with both high precision and high accuracy. The simulation results demonstrated that the ranging precision of the proposed lidar was 2.09 cm and the ranging accuracy was 0.16 cm. A validation experiment verified that the data obtained in the simulation had a modulation bandwidth of 4 GHz using a 200-MHz signal source. The improvements resulted in a frequency-modulated continuous-wave lidar system with high precision and accuracy by operating a modulated signal with a wider modulation bandwidth using signal sources with low bandwidth in a low-cost and compact structure. Abstract:An all-fiber, eye-safe and micro-pulse polarization lidar is demonstrated with a polarization-maintaining structure, incorporating a single superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) at 1.5 μm. The time-division multiplexing technique is used to achieve a calibration-free optical layout. A single piece of detector is used to detect the backscatter signals at two orthogonal states in an alternative sequence. Thus, regular calibration of the two detectors in traditional polarization lidars is avoided. The signal-to-noise ratio of the lidar is guaranteed by using an SNSPD, providing high detection efficiency and low dark count noise. The linear depolarization ratio (LDR) of the urban aerosol is observed horizontally over 48 h in Hefei [N31°50'37'', E117°15'54''], when a heavy air pollution is spreading from the north to the central east of China. Phenomena of LDR bursts are detected at a location where a building is under construction. The lidar results show good agreement with the data detected from a sun photometer, a 532 nm visibility lidar, and the weather forecast information.
Dual-Chirp Photonics-Based Radar for Distance and Velocity Measurement Based on Compressive Sensing

Abstract:We proposed a dual-chirp microwave photonic radar based on compressive sensing for distance and velocity measurement. This radar can generate different chirp linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). In the receiving part, a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) and a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) are cascaded for the optical mixing and de-chirp processing with a pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS). Then the mixed signal can be gathered by an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at a sampling rate that is well below the Nyquist sampling rate. Using fewer sampling points, the reconstruction algorithm can recover the de-chirped signal accurately with a compression ratio of 8. A proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates that when the target is stationary, the distance measurement error is about 1.560 cm. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the recovery signal is enhanced to 30.725 dB. When the target is moving, the simulation results present that the maximum distance error is 1.2 cm, and the velocity error is below 0.140 m/s. This compressive sensing radar reduces the pressure of a massive amount of data storage or processing and guarantees the accuracy of signal recovery. At the same time, it breaks the limitation of operation bandwidth and increases the speed of operation.

Abstract:We observed the characteristics of high energy nanosecond chirped pulse by spectral-resolved streak camera, which works well with energetic chirped pulse of nanosecond pulse duration. At the same time, it can monitor the alignment of grating compressor. The measurement results show that the pulse generated by PW demonstration facility is linearly chirped, verifying the compressibility of amplified nanosecond pulse.
A microcomb-empowered Fourier domain mode-locked LiDAR

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as an indispensable tool in autonomous technology. Among its various techniques, frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR stands out due to its capability to operate with ultralow return power, immunity to unwanted light, and simultaneous acquisition of distance and velocity. However, achieving a rapid update rate with sub-micron precision remains a challenge for FMCW LiDARs. Here, we present such a LiDAR with a sub-10 nm precision and a 24.6 kHz update rate by combining a broadband Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) laser with a silicon nitride soliton microcomb. An ultrahigh frequency chirp rate up to 320 PHz/s is linearized by a 50 GHz microcomb to reach this performance. Our theoretical analysis also contributes to resolving the challenge of FMCW velocity measurements with nonlinear frequency sweeps and enables us to realize velocity measurement with an uncertainty below 0.4 mm/s. Our work shows how nanophotonic microcombs can unlock the potential of ultrafast frequency sweeping lasers for applications including LiDAR, optical coherence tomography and sensing.
