Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplex/offset QAM (OFDM/OQAM) has been proven to be a promising multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique for the transmission of signals over multipath fading channels. However, OFDM/OQAM has also the intrinsic disadvantage of high peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) that should be alleviated. In this paper, a novel selective mapping (SLM) method is proposed for OFDM/OQAM system. Since the pulse shape may cover a few OFDM symbols, the basic principle of the proposed method is to apply the SLM method in the range of the most relevant OFDM symbols. Analysis and simulation results show that, compared to the existing SLM algorithms for OFDM/OQAM system, the proposed method has better PAPR performance and lower computation complexity.

Abstract:By using the time domain sequence superposition (TDSS) technique, in this paper, we propose a low complexity selected mapping (LC-SLM) scheme for the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Unlike the conventional selected mapping (SLM) scheme which needs several inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operations for an OFDM signal, the proposed scheme requires to implement two IFFT operations only. Thus, it can remarkably reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve similar PAPR performance as the conventional SLM scheme.

Abstract:Selected mapping (SLM) scheme with non-Unit magnitude phase factor is developed for the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. A new low-complexity version of SLM is introduced, which employs the shifting time-domain signal combination technique to generate new candidates. Unlike the conventional SLM scheme, which needs several inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operations for an OFDM signal, the proposed scheme requires to implement one IFFT operation only. Thus, it can significantly decrease the computational complexity. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can obtain slightly poorer PAPR reduction performance than the conventional SLM scheme with the same number of candidates.

Abstract:The selected mapping (SLM) scheme is a competent method for reducing the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. One drawback of the conventional SLM (C-SLM) scheme is the high computational complexity. To reduce the complexity of C-SLM, the real and imaginary parts of the OFDM signals are treated separately. The even and odd sequences of the real and imaginary parts are obtained using the Fourier transform properties. More candidates are generated by the different combination of all the sub-sequences. The proposed scheme has a lower computational complexity using only M inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operations to generate M 4 candidates. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves good PAPR reduction performance and also reduces the computational complexity significantly compared with the C-SLM scheme.

Abstract:Selected mapping (SLM) is a promising peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In SLM, phase sequences are combined with the data for generating alternative signals, so as to reduce the PAPR. In this paper, a new criterion is developed to examine the effects of different phase sequence sets in SLM-OFDM based on the mathematical correlation analysis among the alternative signals. Furthermore, according to the proposed criteria, the chaotic phase sequence set is introduced for improving the PAPR reduction performance in SLM. Simulation results show that the improved SLM outperforms conventional methods such as proposed in [6].

Abstract:In this paper, a modified widely linear selective mapping (MWL-SLM) scheme is proposed to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the proposed MWL-SLM scheme, through partition one complex signals into two real signals and combining the linear properties of the Fourier Transform, at most 4M2 candidate signals can be obtained but only require M inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operations. As a result, the proposed SLM scheme has the ability to generate more candidates when compared with conventional SLM (C-SLM) and widely linear SLM (WL-SLM). Therefore, MWL-SLM outperforms C-SLM and WL-SLM for the same computational cost of IFFT operations. Alternatively, for a given number of candidates, MWL-SLM has slightly inferior PAPR reduction performance to C-SLM and WL-SLM but requires less IFFT operations to be implemented, thus resulting in a lower computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The near Gaussian-distribution of the time-domain signal samples of multicarrier transmission, such as OFDM or DMT, gives rise to unacceptable peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which leads to a significant degradation in the transmission power efficiency. As a consequence, several PAPR reduction techniques have been proposed in the literature each offering a different combination of system performance, complexity and bandwidth efficiency. One of the most promising of these is the selective mapping (SLM) technique which has been shown to offer PAPR reductions of several dBs. However, the fact that the SLM technique requires invoking the IFFT process several times per transmitted OFDM-block increases the system complexity and hence results in long latencies and high power consumption. Inspired by the SLM approach, we propose a novel post-IFFT PAPR reduction technique combined with a suitable selection strategy for determining a unique set of time-domain sequences per OFDM block that can minimise the PAPR. It will be shown that PAPR reductions within 0.7 dB of the ordinary SLM performance can be achieved with our proposed technique which requires several order of magnitude less complexity than that of the SLM technique

Abstract:ABSTRACTSelected mapping (SLM) is one of the most well‐known peak‐to‐average power ratio (PAPR) reduction techniques proposed for the orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The main drawback of the conventional SLM scheme is high computational complexity because of numerous inverse fast fourier transform (IFFT) operations when transmitting one OFDM signal, which may hinder its wide application in certain systems. The aim of this paper is to propose a post‐IFFT PAPR reduction scheme based on a cache structure. in the proposed scheme, several candidates are created through combining two of time‐domain signal vectors in cache and the one with the lowest PAPR is transmitted. Because the generation of candidates is implemented after the IFFT, one OFDM signal only requires one complex IFFT operation when using the proposed cache scheme. simulation results show that the new proposed scheme has promising PAPR performance while it decreases the complexity compared with the conventional SLM scheme. In addition, the cache scheme has the ability to be combined with other scheme such as SLM to further reduce the PAPR at the cost of a moderate increase of the complexity. Abstract:In this paper, a new peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is proposed based on the selected mapping (SLM) scheme. The proposed SLM scheme generates alternative OFDM signal sequences by cyclically shifting the connections in each subblock at an intermediate stage of inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). Compared with the conventional SLM scheme, the proposed SLM scheme achieves similar PAPR reduction performance with much lower computational complexity and no bit error rate (BER) degradation. The performance of the proposed SLM scheme is verified through numerical analysis. Also, it is shown that the proposed SLM scheme has the lowest computational complexity among the existing low-complexity SLM schemes exploiting the signals at an intermediate stage of IFFT.

Abstract:Conventional Selected mapping (C-SLM) scheme is commonly employed to reduce peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. However, some side information (SI) must be transmitted for the receiver to recover data correctly, and the SI and data information is separately transmitted. In this paper, we propose a constellation extension based SLM (CE-SLM) scheme to avoid transmitting the SI separately. The independence constraint for CE-SLM scheme is analyzed to guarantee an optimal performance for PAPR reduction. And then the scheme with simple implementation is proposed according to the independence constraint. Simulation results show that CE-SLM scheme has a good performance to reduce PAPR approaching the theoretical limit.

Abstract:Selected mapping (SLM) technique is one of the promising peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction techniques for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In SLM, the selection of phase sequence sets is an important factor for PAPR reduction. In this paper, a new criterion based on the correlationship between alternative signals is firstly proposed to examine the effects of different phase sequence sets in SLM scheme. According to the criteria, the chaotic phase sequence set is combined for optimizing the PAPR reduction performance. Simulation results show that the proposed technique could improve the PAPR reduction performance of SLM scheme more effectively compared with other phase sequence sets as introduced in the work of Bauml et al. (1996).

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal has a high momentary peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), since it is superimposed by many independent subcarriers. Because it does not cause distortion and is easy to realize, the selected mapping (SLM) scheme is a very attractive one among various PAPR reduction solutions. However, conventional SLM (C-SLM) scheme has unbearable computational complexity. In this paper, a novel artificial bee colony-based SLM scheme (ABC-SLM) is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can get good PAPR reduction and has a low computational complexity.

Abstract:Given that the conventional Selected Mapping (SLM) scheme needs to multiply pseudo-random phase sequences to the transmitted data meanwhile transmitting the whole side information, an exhaustive entropy and chaotic phase sequence based SLM method was proposed for reduction the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in the paper. In the novel algorithm, exhaustive entropy was used to evaluate the randomness of phase sequence, chaotic sequences to reduce the large side information and improved Lorenz sequence digitalization method to enlarge sequence entropy, expanding the number of the candidate phase sequences vector space with the lower transmitted parameters of phase sequence. Simulation results show that different quantization methods of chaotic sequence have different exhaustive entropy and PAPR values. Furthermore, compared with the traditional SLM method, the new scheme proposed in the paper has better performance in reducing PAPR of OFDM system by about 0.1-0.5dB.

Abstract:High Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and high sidelobes are inherent problems of an OFDM signal. They need to be treated with compatible solutions. This paper proposes optimum Selective Mapping (SLM) for a joint PAPR and sidelobe power reduction, in which candidate phase sequences are constructed in a parametric phasing scheme to provide independent alternative time signals as well as independent alternative frequency sidelobes. Maximum reductions are obtained for both sidelobe and PAPR for respective number of candidates. Despite a large number of candidate phase sequences are employed, computational efficiency can be achieved using a serial search optimization process with the partial-IFFT algorithm. The parametric phasing shared for both PAPR and sidelobe power reduction allows the side information to be embedded in all transmission symbols, hence either maximum likelihood detection (MLD) or pilot assisted detection (PAD) can be used for reception.

Abstract:Selected mapping (SLM) is a promising distortionless technique for controlling the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In SLM, phase sequence selection plays an important role for efficient PAPR reduction. Although some phase sequence sets have been proposed in past studies, we show that an optimal selection is still desired for the phase sequences from the same set. Therefore, this letter develops a measureable phase sequence selection criterion to optimally select the phase sequences from both the same and different sets, so as to achieve near optimum PAPR reduction performance in SLM-OFDM systems.

Abstract:Peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction methods for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems commonly use four times oversampling for the discrete-time OFDM signal to approximate the peak of the continuous-time OFDM signal. However, the four times oversampling process increases the computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a new low-complexity method to efficiently estimate the PAPR value of the OFDM signal. The proposed scheme uses an interpolator to find the peak of the four times oversampled OFDM signal around some searched samples of the original discrete-time OFDM signal using oversampling with a factor lower than four. Some criteria are derived to determine the interpolation filter length and the threshold of sample power for the search process. As compared to the method with four times oversampling, the proposed PAPR estimation scheme achieves close performance with only about half of the computational complexity. It is also shown that the proposed approach can easily be combined with the selected mapping method for PAPR reduction, where the complexity is significantly reduced but the performance is degraded only slightly.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an attractive technology to provide immense improvements in wireless transmission capacity but high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is a major drawback of OFDM system. Selected mapping (SLM) scheme has good performance for PAPR reduction. It requires the transmitting data to be multiplied by random phase sequences. However, the sequences are pseudo-random which will decrease the method effectiveness. Exhaustive entropy is introduced in this paper which can identify the strength of random phase sequences property. Then an exhaustive entropy based SLM method is proposed. The scheme improves the effectiveness of random phase sequences by selecting the larger exhaustive entropy of them. Simulation results show that the PAPR reduction performance is better than that of conventional SLM through this method.

Abstract:A new approach for peak-to-average power ratio （PAPR） reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing （OFDM） systems was proposed.This approach is based on assigning powers to the different subcarriers of OFDM using an unequal power distribution strategy.In addition,a reduced complexity selective mapping （RC-SLM） scheme was proposed.The proposed scheme is based on partitioning the frequency domain symbol sequence into several sub-blocks,and then each sub-block is multiplied by different phase sequences whose length is shorter than that used in the conventional SLM scheme.Then,a kind of low complexity conversions is used to replace the IFFT blocks.The performance of the proposed RC-SLM scheme along with the new approach was studied with computer simulation.The obtained results show that the proposed RC-SLM scheme is able to achieve the lowest computational complexity when compared with other low complexity schemes proposed in the literature while at the same time improves the PAPR reduction performance by about 0.3 dB.

Abstract:The inhernet high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of multicarrier transmission, such as OFDM or DMT, is a major drawback that can significantly worsen the power efficiency and performance of these systems. One of the most effective techniques proposed for reducing the PAPR in multi-carrier systems is based on selective mapping (SLM) in which a family of sequencies with random phase distribution is used iteratively to modify the phases of the modulated subcarriers with the aim to minimise the PAPR. However, the fact that this technique requires the transmission of side information, to enable correct demapping at the receiver, reduces the system's spectral and transmission-power efficiency. In this paper, we propose a modified SLM technique that does not require the transmission of any side information while at the same time it can achieve the same PAPR reduction and even lower symbol error rate (SER) performance as the unmodified SLM technique.
