Abstract:We show that to the modified GUE partition function with even coupling introduced by Dubrovin, Liu, Yang and Zhang, one can associate $n$-point correlation functions in arbitrary genera which satisfy Eynard-Orantin topological recursions. Furthermore, these $n$-point functions are related to intersection numbers on the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces.

Abstract:We define higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a mathematical theory of sigma model coupled with gravity over any semi-positive symplectic manifolds. As applications, we verify the stablizing conjecture of symplectic 4-manifolds for simply connected elliptic surfaces and construct smooth 6-manifolds admitting infinitely many deformation classes of symplectic structures.

Abstract:We study a closed differential form on the symmetric space of positive definite matrices, which is defined using the Pfaffian and is $\mathsf{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ invariant up to a sign. It gives rise to an infinite family of unstable classes in the compactly-supported cohomology of the locally symmetric space for $\mathsf{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in the orientation bundle. Furthermore, by applying the Pfaffian forms to the dual Laplacian of graphs, and integrating them over the space of edge lengths, we construct an infinite family of cocycles for the odd commutative graph complex. By explicit computation, we show that the first such cocycle gives a non-trivial class in $H^{-6}(\mathsf{GC}_3)$.

Entanglement Edge Modes of General Noncommutative Matrix Backgrounds

Abstract:We explore the structure of entanglement edge modes on noncommutative backgrounds that arise from matrix quantum mechanics. For the fuzzy sphere, despite nonlocality and UV/IR mixing, we find area law behavior in the dominant $U(N)$ representations governing the state of the edge modes. For general noncommutative backgrounds with no global symmetry, nonlocal effects resum into a smoothly varying coupling constant that deforms the metric to a different frame. The effect is analogous to the relationship between string frame and Einstein frame in string theory.

Quantum geometry of moduli spaces of local systems and representation theory

Abstract:Let G be a split semi-simple adjoint group, and S a colored decorated surface, given by an oriented surface with punctures, special boundary points, and a specified collection of boundary intervals. We introduce a moduli space P(G,S) parametrizing G-local system on S with some boundary data, and prove that it carries a cluster Poisson structure, equivariant under the action of the cluster modular group M(G,S), containing the mapping class group of S, the group of outer automorphisms of G, and the product of Weyl / braid groups over punctures / boundary components. We prove that the dual moduli space A(G,S) carries a M(G,S)-equivariant cluster structure, and the pair (A(G,S), P(G,S)) is a cluster ensemble. These results generalize the works of V. Fock & the first author, and of I. Le. We quantize cluster Poisson varieties X for any Planck constant h s.t. h>0 or |h|=1. First, we define a *-algebra structure on the Langlands modular double A(h; X) of the algebra of functions on X. We construct a principal series of representations of the *-algebra A(h; X), equivariant under a unitary projective representation of the cluster modular group M(X). This extends works of V. Fock and the first author when h>0. Combining this, we get a M(G,S)-equivariant quantization of the moduli space P(G,S), given by the *-algebra A(h; P(G,S)) and its principal series representations. We construct realizations of the principal series *-representations. In particular, when S is punctured disc with two special points, we get a principal series *-representations of the Langlands modular double of the quantum group Uq(g). We conjecture that there is a nondegenerate pairing between the local system of coinvariants of oscillatory representations of the W-algebra and the one provided by the projective representation of the mapping class group of S.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a model for quantum gravity on finite noncommutative spaces using the theory of blobbed topological recursion. The model is based on a particular class of random finite real spectral triples ${(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, D , \gamma , J) \,}$, called random matrix geometries of type ${(1,0) \,}$, with a fixed fermion space ${(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, \gamma , J) \,}$, and a distribution of the form ${e^{- \mathcal{S} (D)} {\mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}} D}$ over the moduli space of Dirac operators. The action functional ${\mathcal{S} (D)}$ is considered to be a sum of terms of the form ${\prod_{i=1}^s \mathrm{Tr} \left( {D^{n_i}} \right)}$ for arbitrary ${s \geqslant 1 \,}$. The Schwinger-Dyson equations satisfied by the connected correlators ${W_n}$ of the corresponding multi-trace formal 1-Hermitian matrix model are derived by a differential geometric approach. It is shown that the coefficients ${W_{g,n}}$ of the large $N$ expansion of ${W_n}$'s enumerate discrete surfaces, called stuffed maps, whose building blocks are of particular topologies. The spectral curve ${\left( {\Sigma , \omega_{0,1} , \omega_{0,2}} \right)}$ of the model is investigated in detail. In particular, we derive an explicit expression for the fundamental symmetric bidifferential ${\omega_{0,2}}$ in terms of the formal parameters of the model.

Intertwined order of generalized global symmetries

Abstract:We investigate the interplay of generalized global symmetries in 2+1 dimensions by introducing a lattice model that couples a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ clock model to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge theory via a topological interaction. This coupling binds the charges of one symmetry to the disorder operators of the other, and when these composite objects condense, they give rise to emergent generalized symmetries with mixed 't Hooft anomalies. These anomalies result in phases with ordinary symmetry breaking, topological order, and symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order, where the different types of order are not independent but intimately related. We further explore the gapped boundary states of these exotic phases and develop theories for phase transitions between them. Additionally, we extend our lattice model to incorporate a non-invertible global symmetry, which can be spontaneously broken, leading to domain walls with non-trivial fusion rules.

Emergent (2+1)D topological orders from iterative (1+1)D gauging

Abstract:Gauging introduces gauge fields in order to localize an existing global symmetry, resulting in a dual global symmetry on the gauge fields that can be gauged again. By iterating the gauging process on spin chains with Abelian group symmetries and arranging the gauge fields in a 2D lattice, the local symmetries become the stabilizer of the $XZZX$-code for any Abelian group. By twisting the gauging map we obtain new codes that explicitly confine anyons, which violate an odd number of plaquette terms and whose fusion results in mobile dipole excitations. Our construction naturally realizes any gapped boundary by taking different quantum phases of the initial (1+1)D globally symmetric system. Our method establishes a new route to obtain higher dimensional topological codes from lower ones, to identify their gapped boundaries and their tensor network representations.

Topological entanglement and number theory

Abstract:The recent developments in the study of topological multi-boundary entanglement in the context of 3d Chern-Simons theory (with gauge group $G$ and level $k$) suggest a strong interplay between entanglement measures and number theory. The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we conjecture that the 'sum of the negative powers of the quantum dimensions of all integrable highest weight representations at level $k$' is an integer multiple of the Witten zeta function of $G$ when $k \to \infty$. This provides an alternative way to compute these zeta functions, and we present some examples. Next, we use this conjecture to investigate number-theoretic properties of the Rényi entropies of the quantum state associated with the $S^3$ complement of torus links of type $T_{p,p}$. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit of $k \to \infty$, these entropies converge to a finite value. This finite value can be written in terms of the Witten zeta functions of the group $G$ evaluated at positive even integers.

Abstract:We associate a noncommutative curve to a periodic, bipartite, planar dimer model with polygonal boundary. It determines the inverse Kasteleyn matrix and hence all correlations. It may be seen as a quantization of the limit shape construction of Kenyon and the author. We also discuss various directions in which this correspondence may be generalized.

Compactifications of the Eisenstein ancestral Deligne-Mostow variety

Abstract:All arithmetic non-compact ball quotients by Deligne-Mostow's unitary monodromy group arise as sub-ball quotients of either of two spaces called ancestral cases, corresponding to Gaussian or Eisenstein Hermitian forms respectively. In our previous paper, we investigated the compactifications of the Gaussian Deligne-Mostow variety. Here we work on the remaining case, namely the ring of Eisenstein integers, which is related to the moduli space of unordered 12 points on $\mathbb P^1$. In particular, we show that Kirwan's partial resolution of the moduli space is not a semi-toroidal compactification and Deligne-Mostow's period map does not lift to the unique toroidal compactification. We give two interpretations of these phenomena in terms of the log minimal model program and automorphic forms. As an application, we prove that the above two compactifications are not (stacky) derived equivalent, as the $DK$-conjecture predicts. Furthermore, we construct an automorphic form on the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, which is isogenous to the Eisenstein Deligne-Mostow variety, giving another intrinsic proof, independent of lattice embeddings, of a result by Casalaina-Martin, Jensen and Laza.

Abstract:We establish a weight-preserving bijection between the index sets of the spectral data of row-to-row and corner transfer matrices for $U_q\widehat{sl(n)}$ restricted interaction round a face (IRF) models. The evaluation of momenta by adding Takahashi integers in the spin chain language is shown to directly correspond to the computation of the energy of a path on the weight lattice in the two-dimensional model. As a consequence we derive fermionic forms of polynomial analogues of branching functions for the cosets ${(A^{(1)}_{n-1})_{\ell -1}\otimes (A^{(1)}_{n-1})_{1}} \over (A^{(1)}_{n-1})_{\ell}$, and establish a bosonic-fermionic polynomial identity.

Geometric Structures on the Complement of a Projective Arrangement

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.
Geometric additivity of modular commutator for multipartite entanglement

Abstract:A recent surge of research in many-body quantum entanglement has uncovered intriguing properties of quantum many-body systems. A prime example is the modular commutator, which can extract a topological invariant from a single wave function. Here, we unveil novel geometric properties of many-body entanglement via a modular commutator of two-dimensional gapped quantum many-body systems. We obtain the geometric additivity of a modular commutator, indicating that modular commutator for a multipartite system may be an integer multiple of the one for tripartite systems. Using our additivity formula, we also derive a curious identity for the modular commutators involving disconnected intervals in a certain class of conformal field theories. We further illustrate this geometric additivity for both bulk and edge subsystems using numerical calculations of the Haldane and $\pi$-flux models.

Coloured combinatorial maps and quartic bi-tracial 2-matrix ensembles from noncommutative geometry

Abstract:We compute the first twenty moments of three convergent quartic bi-tracial 2-matrix ensembles in the large $N$ limit. These ensembles are toy models for Euclidean quantum gravity originally proposed by John Barrett and collaborators. A perturbative solution is found for the first twenty moments using the Schwinger-Dyson equations and properties of certain bi-colored unstable maps associated to the model. We then apply a result of Guionnet et al. to show that the perturbative and convergent solution coincide for a small neighbourhood of the coupling constants. For each model we compute an explicit expression for the free energy, critical points, and critical exponents in the large $N$ limit. In particular, the string susceptibility is found to be $\gamma =1/2$, hinting that the associated universality class of the model is the continuous random tree.

Noncommutative Chern-Simons Theory and Exotic Geometry Emerging from the Lowest Landau Level

Abstract:We relate the collective dynamic internal geometric degrees of freedom to the gauge fluctuations in nu = 1/m (m odd) fractional quantum Hall effects. In this way, in the lowest Landau level, a highly nontrivial quantum geometry in two-dimensional guiding center space emerges from these internal geometric modes. Using the Dirac bracket method, we find that this quantum geometric field theory is a topological noncommutative Chern-Simons theory. Topological indices, such as the guiding center angular momentum (also called the shift) and the guiding center spin, which characterize the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states besides the filling factor, are naturally defined. A noncommutative K-matrix Chern-Simons theory is proposed as a generalization to a large class of Abelian FQH topological orders.

Twisted Cohomology of Configuration Spaces and Spaces of Maximal Tori Via Point-Counting

Abstract:We consider two families of algebraic varieties Y_n indexed by natural numbers n: the configuration space of unordered n-tuples of distinct points on ℂ, and the space of unordered n-tuples of linearly independent lines in ℂ^n. Let W_n be any sequence of virtual S_n-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute H^i(Y_n; W_n) for all i and all n in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers lim_n→∞ H^i(Y_n; W_n) are linearly recurrent in i. Our method is to compute twisted point-counts on the F_q-points of certain algebraic varieties, and then pass through the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula to prove results in topology. We also generalize a result of Church-Ellenberg-Farb about the configuration spaces of the affine line to those of a general smooth variety.
Multimatroids and rational curves with cyclic action

Abstract:We study the connection between multimatroids and moduli spaces of rational curves with cyclic action. Multimatroids are generalizations of matroids and delta-matroids introduced by Bouchet, which naturally arise in topological graph theory. The vantage point of moduli of curves provides a tropical framework for studying multimatroids, generalizing the previous connection between type-A permutohedral varieties (Losev--Manin moduli spaces) and matroids, and the connection between type-B permutohedral varieties (Batyrev--Blume moduli spaces) and delta-matroids. Specifically, we equate a combinatorial nef cone of the moduli space with the space of $\mathbb{R}$-multimatroids, a slight generalization of multimatroids, and we introduce the independence polytopal complex of a multimatroid, whose volume is identified with an intersection number on the moduli space. As an application, for the generating set of the Chow ring of the moduli space consisting of all psi-classes and their pullbacks along certain forgetful maps, we give a combinatorial formula for their intersection numbers by relating to the volumes of independence polytopal complexes of multimatroids.

Abstract:We study a class of newly-introduced CFTs associated with even quadratic forms of general signature, which we call generalized Narain theories. We first summarize the properties of these theories. We then consider orbifolds of these theories, thereby obtaining a large class of non-supersymmetric CFTs with exactly marginal deformations. We then discuss ensemble averages of such theories over their moduli space, and obtain a modular form associated with the quadratic form and an element of the discriminant group. The modular form can be written as a Poincare series, which contains novel invariants of lens spaces and suggests the interpretation of the holographic bulk as a theory of anyons.
