Abstract:The European Space Agency Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be the first mission dedicated to the detection of low-frequency gravitational waves in space. Particles of galactic and solar origin above tens of MeV will penetrate the spacecraft and charge the metal free-falling test masses (TMs) playing the role of mirrors of the interferometer. The poissonian fluctuations of the charging process and associated spurious Coulomb forces acting on the TMs limit the sensitivity of LISA mainly below 1 mHz. Moreover, galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) flux short-term variations will modulate differently the TM charging on the three satellites of the LISA constellation. Without a proper GCR flux monitoring, the LISA TM charging estimates will be carried out on the basis of the long-term solar modulation only. In this work we report about models of galactic cosmic-ray short-term variations to investigate to which extent the galactic cosmic-ray depressions can be also used as a proxy of the increase of interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind speed observed at the passage of high-speed solar wind streams and interplanetary coronal mass ejections. Our final aim is to study the optimum characteristics of particle detectors for both TM charging estimate and interplanetary medium monitoring for LISA.

Abstract:The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) of the European Space Agency (ESA) will be the first low-frequency gravitational-wave observatory orbiting the Sun at 1 AU. The LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission, aiming at testing of the instruments to be located on board the LISA spacecraft (S/C), hosted, among the others, fluxgate magnetometers and a particle detector as parts of a diagnostics subsystem. These instruments allowed us for the estimate of the magnetic and Coulomb spurious forces acting on the test masses that constitute the mirrors of the interferometer. With these instruments we also had the possibility to study the galactic cosmic-ray short term-term variations as a function of the particle energy and the associated interplanetary disturbances. Platform magnetometers and particle detectors will be also placed on board each LISA S/C. This work reports about an empirical method that allowed us to disentangle the interplanetary and onboard-generated components of the magnetic field by using the LPF magnetometer measurements. Moreover, we estimate the number and fluence of solar energetic particle events expected to be observed with the ESA Next Generation Radiation Monitor during the mission lifetime. An additional cosmic-ray detector, similar to that designed for LPF, in combination with magnetometers, would permit to observe the evolution of recurrent and non-recurrent galactic cosmic-ray variations and associated increases of the interplanetary magnetic field at the transit of high-speed solar wind streams and interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections. The diagnostics subsystem of LISA makes this mission also a natural multi-point observatory for space weather science investigations.

Abstract:Context. The LISA space observatory will explore the sub-Hz spectrum of gravitational wave emission from the Universe. The space environment, where will be immersed in, is responsible for charge accumulation on its free falling test masses (TMs) due to the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar energetic particles (SEP) impinging on the spacecraft. Primary and secondary particles produced in the spacecraft material eventually reach the TMs by depositing a net positive charge fluctuating in time. This work is relevant for any present and future space missions that, like LISA, host free-falling TMs as inertial reference. Aims. The coupling of the TM charge with native stray electrostatic field produces noise forces on the TMs, which can limit the performance of the LISA mission. A precise knowledge of the charging process allows us to predict the intensity of these charge-induced disturbances and to design specific counter-measures. Methods. We present a comprehensive toolkit that allows us to calculate the TM charging time-series in a geometry representative of LISA mission, and the associated induced forces under different conditions of the space environment by considering the effects of short, long GCR flux modulations and SEPs. Results. We study, for each of the previously mentioned conditions, the impact of spurious forces associated with the TM charging process on the mission sensitivity for gravitational wave detection.

Noise Models in the LISA Mission

Abstract:This document briefly describes the noise models and shapes used for the synthesis of the Drag-Free and Attitude Control System in the LISA space mission. LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is one of the next large-class missions from the European Space Agency (ESA), expected to be launched in 2034. The main goal of the mission is to detect the gravitational waves, which are undulatory perturbations of the space-time fabric, extremely important to collect experimental proofs for the General Relativity Theory. In the 90s, different international collaborations of institutes laid the foundations for the first ground-based interferometers (see, e.g., LIGO and Virgo). However, ground-based interferometers have a limited bandwidth due to the Earth's environmental noises and short arm-length of few kilometers. Therefore, they cannot observe gravitational waves belonging to the portion of the spectrum below 1 Hz. This issue can be overcome by means of space-based interferometers, that can have arm-lengths up to millions of kilometers and exploit a quieter environment than the Earth's surface. The LISA system is affected by actuation, sensing and environmental disturbances and noises. Among the actuation noises we have those given by the Micro Propulsion System (MPS), the Gravitational Reference Sensor (GRS) and the Optical Assembly (OA) motor. Among the sensing noises we consider the interferometer, the Differential Wavefront Sensor (DWS) and the GRS. The environmental disturbances are given by the solar radiation pressure, the test-mass stiffness and self-gravity, and the environmental noises acting directly on the test-mass.

Abstract:LISA is the proposed ESA-NASA gravitational wave detector in the 0.1 mHz - 0.1 Hz band. LISA Pathfinder is the down-scaled version of a single LISA arm. The arm -- named Doppler link -- can be treated as a differential accelerometer, measuring the relative acceleration between test masses. LISA Pathfinder -- the in-flight test of the LISA instrumentation -- is currently in the final implementation and planned to be launched in 2014. It will set stringent constraints on the ability to put test masses in geodesic motion to within the required differential acceleration of 3\times10^{-14} m s^{-2} Hz^{-1/2} and track their relative motion to within the required differential displacement measurement noise of 9\times10^{-12} m Hz^{-1/2}, around 1 mHz. Given the scientific objectives, it will carry out -- for the first time with such high accuracy required for gravitational wave detection -- the science of spacetime metrology, in which the Doppler link between two free-falling test masses measures the curvature. This thesis contains a novel approach to the calculation of the Doppler response to gravitational waves. It shows that the parallel transport of 4-vectors records the history of gravitational wave signals. In practice, the Doppler link is implemented with 4 bodies in LISA and 3 bodies in LISA Pathfinder. To compensate for noise sources a control logic is implemented during the measurement. The closed-loop dynamics of LISA Pathfinder can be condensed into operators acting on the motion coordinates, handling the couplings, as well as the cross-talks. The scope of system identification is the optimal calibration of the instrument. This thesis describes some data analysis procedures applied to synthetic experiments and shows the relevance of system identification for the success of LISA Pathfinder in demonstrating the principles of spacetime metrology for all future space-based missions.

Abstract:We describe a new space gravitational wave observatory design called LAGRANGE that maintains all important LISA science at about half the cost and with reduced technical risk. It consists of three drag-free spacecraft in the most stable geocentric formation, the Earth-Moon L3, L4, and L5 Lagrange points. Fixed antennas allow continuous contact with the Earth, solving the problem of communications bandwidth and latency. A 70 mm diameter AuPt sphere with a 35 mm gap to its enclosure serves as a single inertial reference per spacecraft, which is operated in "true" drag-free mode (no test mass forcing). This is the core of the Modular Gravitational Reference Sensor whose other advantages are: a simple caging design based on the DISCOS 1972 drag-free mission, an all optical read-out with pm fine and nm coarse sensors, and the extensive technology heritage from the Honeywell gyroscopes, and the DISCOS and Gravity Probe B drag-free sensors. An Interferometric Measurement System, designed with reflective optics and a highly stabilized frequency standard, performs the inter-test mass ranging and requires a single optical bench with one laser per spacecraft. Two 20 cm diameter telescopes per spacecraft, each with in-field pointing, incorporate novel technology developed for advanced optical systems by Lockheed Martin, who also designed the spacecraft based on a multi-flight proven bus structure. Additional technological advancements include the drag-free propulsion, thermal control, charge management systems, and materials. LAGRANGE sub-systems are designed to be scalable and modular, making them interchangeable with those of LISA or other gravitational science missions. We plan to space qualify critical technologies on small and nano satellite flights, with the first launch (UV-LED Sat) in 2013.

Abstract:LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is a proposed mission which will use coherent laser beams exchanged between three remote spacecraft to detect and study low-frequency cosmic gravitational radiation. Modeling each spacecraft as moving almost inertially, rigidly carrying a laser, beam splitters and photodetectors, we previously showed how the measured time series of Doppler shifts of the six one-way laser beams between spacecraft pairs could be combined, with suitable time delays, to cancel exactly the otherwise overwhelming phase noise of the lasers. Three of the combinations synthesized data that could in principle be obtained if the spacecraft separations were very precisely equal, as in Michelson interferometry; seven other combinations offered possible design advantages and useful redundancy. Here we extend those results by presenting time-delay equations for Doppler data from the actual drag-free configuration envisaged for the LISA mission. Each spacecraft will carry two proof-masses, shielded within two non-inertial optical benches carrying lasers and photodetectors. In this full drag-free configuration there are now twelve Doppler data streams, six measured with beams between the three vertex spacecraft and two with beams between each of the optical bench pairs on the three spacecraft. We show that generalizations of our previous linear data combinations, now using these twelve one-way Doppler measurements, can cancel the noises of all six lasers and also remove Doppler shifts due to the non-inertial motions of the six optical benches. It is noteworthy that adjacent optical benches need not be rigidly connected and that no phase locking of their lasers is required. From the latest LISA estimates for power spectra of remaining Doppler noises (very-low-level proof-mass “acceleration” noise, photodetector shot noise, and beam pointing noise) we compute the sensitivities of the generalized data combinations X and P. In the Appendix we give defining equations and sensitivity results for two additional data combinations, denoted E and U. Like X and P, these combinations only require data from four one-way laser links between the LISA spacecraft. LISA can achieve the desired gravitational wave strain performance of ∼10-23 with any of these combinations.

Abstract:Energetic particles of galactic and solar origin charge the metal free-falling test masses (TMs) of the interferometers for gravitational wave detection in space. The deposited charge couples with stray electric fields thus generating spurious Coulomb forces between the TMs and the electrode housing that limit the interferometer sensitivity. Long-term and short-term galactic cosmic-ray variations are strongly energy-dependent and the TM charging varies with particle energy distribution. We propose three different approaches involving Monte Carlo simulations and machine learning models in comparison to particle transport with the Parker equation to study the recurrent modulation of energy spectra of galactic particles ascribable to the passage of high-speed solar wind streams. The transit of interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections modifies the effects of high-speed streams. This work aims at better understanding the energy-dependence of galactic cosmic-ray short-term variations for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the first interferometer for gravitational wave detection in space, starting from lessons learned with LISA Pathfinder. The outcomes of our models will be used to assess the TM charging during the time LISA will remain in orbit around the Sun.

Abstract:The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), space-based gravitational wave observatory involves a complex multidimensional closed-loop dynamical system. Its instrument performance is expected to be less efficiently isolated from platform motion than was its simpler technological demonstrator, LISA Pathfinder. It is of crucial importance to understand and model LISA dynamical behavior accurately to understand the propagation of dynamical excitations through the response of the instrument down to the interferometer data streams. More generally, simulation of the system allows for the preparation of the processing and interpretation of in-flight metrology data. In this work, we present a comprehensive mathematical modeling of the closed-loop system dynamics and its numerical implementation within the LISA Consortium simulation suite. We provide, for the first time, a full time-domain numerical demonstration of post-processing Time Delay Interferometer techniques combining multiple position measurements with realistic control loops to create a synthetic Michelson interferometer. We show that in the absence of physical coupling to spacecraft and telescope motion (through tilt-to-length, stiffness and actuation cross-talk) the effect of noisy spacecraft motion is efficiently suppressed to a level below the noise originating in the rest of the instrument.

Abstract:The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be the first space-based gravitational wave observatory. LISA uses continuous-wave, infrared laser beams propagating among three widely separated spacecrafts to measure their distances with picometer accuracy via time-delay interferometry. These measurements put very high demands on the laser wavefront and are thus very sensitive to any deposits on laser optics that could be induced by laser-induced molecular contamination (LIMC). In this work, we describe the results of an extensive experimental test campaign assessing LIMC related risks for LISA. We find that the LIMC concern for LISA, even considering the high demands on the laser wavefront, may be greatly reduced compared to that observed at shorter wavelengths or with pulsed laser radiation. This result is very promising for LISA as well as for other space missions using continuous-wave, infrared laser radiation, e.g., in free space laser communication or quantum key distribution.

Abstract:The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

A torsion pendulum ground test of the LISA Pathfinder Free-fall mode

Abstract:LISA Pathfinder is the technological demonstrator space mission for the future gravitational waves observatory in space eLISA, with the aim of measure the differential acceleration between free-falling test masses orbiting in the same apparatus at a level of 30 fm/s-2Hz-1/2 at 1 mHz. Because the satellite can't follow the two masses at the same time, the second mass must be forced to follow either the other one or the spacecraft. The actuation force applied to compensate this effect introduces a dominant source of force noise in the mission noise budget at frequency near and below the mHz. The free-fall mode actuation control scheme has been designed to suppress this noise source and avoid actuation instabilities: actuation is limited to brief periodic impulses, with test masses in free fall in between two kicks. This actuation-free motion is then analyzed for the remaining sources of acceleration ultra noise. A free-fall mode parallel testing has been successfully implemented on torsion pendulum facility at the University of Trento and the results of the measurement campaign are ready to be shown and discussed. The implementation of the data analysis algorithms to estimate the spectrum of the acceleration of the controlled test mass, and the estimation of system parameters such as the force gradients, stiffness terms, are also part of this work. The free-fall mode has been tested at the level of 2 fNm/Hz-1/2, at the frequencies of 1 mHz, corresponding to an acceleration of about 100 fm /s-2 Hz-1/2. The ground tests have nevertheless allowed to develop and test quantitatively this innovative method of noise reduction due to actuation noise, contributing to its development for the LISA Pathfinder mission.

gLISA: geosynchronous Laser Interferometer Space Antenna concepts with off-the-shelf satellites

Abstract:We discuss two geosynchronous gravitational wave mission concepts, which we generically name gLISA. One relies on the science instrument hosting program onboard geostationary commercial satellites, while the other takes advantage of recent developments in the aerospace industry that result in dramatic satellite and launching vehicle cost reductions for a dedicated geosynchronous mission. To achieve the required level of disturbance free-fall onboard these large and heavy platforms we propose a "two-stage" drag-free system, which incorporates the Modular Gravitational Reference Sensor (MGRS) (developed at Stanford University) and does not rely on the use of micro-Newton thrusters. Although both mission concepts are characterized by different technical and programmatic challenges, individually they could be flown and operated at a cost significantly lower than those of previously envisioned gravitational wave missions. We estimate both mission concepts to cost less than 500M US$ each, and in the year 2015 we will perform at JPL a detailed selecting mission cost analysis.

Abstract:LISA Pathfinder (LPF) has been a space-based mission designed to test new technologies that will be required for a gravitational wave observatory in space. Magnetically driven forces play a key role in the instrument sensitivity in the low-frequency regime (mHz and below), the measurement band of interest for a space-based observatory. The magnetic field can couple to the magnetic susceptibility and remanent magnetic moment from the test masses and disturb them from their geodesic movement. LISA Pathfinder carried on-board a dedicated magnetic measurement subsystem with noise levels of 10 $ \rm nT \ Hz^{-1/2}$ from 1 Hz down to 1 mHz. In this paper we report on the magnetic measurements throughout LISA Pathfinder operations. We characterise the magnetic environment within the spacecraft, study the time evolution of the magnetic field and its stability down to 20 $\mu$Hz, where we measure values around 200 $ \rm nT \ Hz^{-1/2}$ and identify two different frequency regimes, one related to the interplanetary magnetic field and the other to the magnetic field originating inside the spacecraft. Finally, we characterise the non-stationary component of the fluctuations of the magnetic field below the mHz and relate them to the dynamics of the solar wind.

Abstract:The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas.

Abstract:Like gravitational wave detection, inter-spacecraft geodesy is a measurement of gravitational tidal accelerations deforming a constellation of two or more orbiting reference test masses (TM). The LISA TM system requires TM in free fall with residual stray accelerations approaching the fm/s2/Hz1/2 level in the mHz band, as demonstrated in the LISA Pathfinder "Einstein's geodesic explorer" mission. Current geodesy missions are limited by accelerometers with 100 pm/s2/Hz1/2 level, due to intrinsic design limitations, as well as the challenging low Earth orbit environment and operating conditions. A reduction in the TM acceleration noise could lead to an important improvement in the scientific return of future geodesy missions focusing on mass change, especially in a scenario with multiple pairs of geodesy satellites. We present here a preliminary assessment of how the LISA TM system, known as the "gravitational reference sensor" (GRS), could be adapted for use in future geodesy missions aiming at residual TM accelerations noise at the pm/s2/Hz1/2 level, addressing the major design issues and performance limitations. We find that such a performance is possible in a geodesy GRS that is simpler and smaller than that used for LISA, with a lighter, sub-kg TM and gaps reduced from 4 mm to less than 1 mm. Acceleration noise performance limitations will likely be closely tied to the required levels of applied actuation forces on the TM.

Abstract:LISA Pathfinder, the European Space Agency's technology demonstrator mission for future spaceborne gravitational wave observatories, was launched on 3 December 2015, from the European space port of Kourou, French Guiana. After a short duration transfer to the final science orbit, the mission has been gathering science data since. This data has allowed the science community to validate the critical technologies and measurement principle for low frequency gravitational wave detection and thereby confirming the readiness to start the next generation gravitational wave observatories, such as LISA.

Abstract:The geosynchronous Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (gLISA) is a space-based gravitational wave (GW) mission that, for the past five years, has been under joint study at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Stanford University, the National Institute for Space Research (I.N.P.E., Brazil), and Space Systems Loral. If flown at the same time as the LISA mission, the two arrays will deliver a joint sensitivity that accounts for the best performance of both missions in their respective parts of the mHz band. This simultaneous operation will result in an optimally combined sensitivity curve that is "white" from a few mHz to 1 Hz, making the two antennas capable of detecting, with high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), coalescing black-hole binaries (BHBs) with masses in the range (10 - 100 million) solar masses. Their ability of jointly tracking, with enhanced SNR, signals similar to that observed by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (aLIGO) on September 14, 2015 (the GW150914 event) will result in a larger number of observable small-mass binary black-holes and an improved precision of the parameters characterizing these sources. Together, LISA, gLISA and aLIGO will cover, with good sensitivity, a frequency band from a tenth of a mHz to a kHz frequency band.

Abstract:The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission is being developed by ESA with NASA participation. As it has recently passed the Mission Adoption milestone, models of the instruments and noise performance are becoming more detailed, and likewise prototype data analyses must as well. Assumptions such as Gaussianity, Stationarity, and continuous data continuity are unrealistic, and must be replaced with physically motivated data simulations, and data analysis methods adapted to accommodate such likely imperfections. To this end, the LISA Data Challenges have produced datasets featuring time-varying and unequal constellation armlength, and measurement artifacts including data interruptions and instrumental transients. In this work, we assess the impact of these data artifacts on the inference of Galactic Binary and Massive Black Hole properties. Our analysis shows that the treatment of noise transients and gaps is necessary for effective parameter estimation. We find that straightforward mitigation techniques can significantly suppress artifacts, albeit leaving a non-negligible impact on aspects of the science.

Abstract:Within its Voyage 2050 planning cycle, the European Space Agency (ESA) is considering long-term large class science mission themes. Gravitational-wave astronomy is among the topics under study. Building on previous work by other authors, this paper studies a gravitational-wave interferometer concept, dubbed "LISAmax", consisting of three spacecraft, each located close to one of the Sun-Earth libration points L3, L4 and L5, forming a triangular constellation with an arm length of 259 million kilometers (to be compared to LISA's 2.5 million kilometer arms). We argue that this is the largest triangular formation that can be reached from Earth without a major leap in mission complexity and cost (hence the name). The sensitivity curve of such a detector is at least two orders of magnitude lower in amplitude than that of LISA, at frequencies below 1 mHz. This makes the observatory sensitive to gravitational waves in the {\mu}Hz range and opens a new window for gravitational-wave astronomy, not covered by any other planned detector concept. We analyze in detail the constellation stability for a 10-year mission in the full numerical model including insertion, dispersion, and self-gravity-induced accelerations. We compute the orbit transfers using a European launcher and chemical propulsion. Different orbit options, such as precessing, inclined orbits, the use of flybys for the transfer, and the launch strategy, are discussed. The payload design parameters are assessed, and the expected sensitivity curve is compared with a number of potential gravitational-wave sources. No show stoppers are identified at this point of the analysis.
