Abstract:Recent progress in the study of the single-scattering properties of nonspherical ice crystals within cirrus clouds and nonspherical dust particles is reviewed. We have been using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method, the discrete dipole approximation (DDA), and an improved geometric optics method (IGOM) to compute the single-scattering properties of nonspherical particles. We have incorporated the so-called edge effect associated with the surface wave into the IGOM extinction and absorption efficiencies. The simulation results in the solar and thermal infrared spectral regimes are presented. Furthermore, the impacts of particle nonsphericity on downstream remote sensing implementations and radiative transfer simulations involving ice clouds and dust aerosols are also summarized.

Abstract:The scattering of light by dielectric particles much larger than the wavelength of incident light is attributed to diffraction, external reflection and outgoing refracted waves. This paper focuses on diffraction and external reflection by faceted particles, which can be calculated semi-analytically based on physical optics. Three approximate methods; the surface-integral method (SIM), the volume-integral method (VIM), and the diffraction plus reflection pattern from ray optics (DPR) are compared. Four elements of the amplitude scattering matrix in the SIM and the VIM are presented in an explicit form. Of interest is that diffraction and external reflection are separable in the SIM, whereas they are combined in the VIM. A feature of zero forward reflection is noticed in the SIM. The applicability of the DPR method is restricted to particles with random orientations. In the manner of van de Hulst, we develop a new technique to compute the reflection pattern of randomly oriented convex particles using spheres with the same refractive index, resulting in an improvement in the precision of the reflection calculation in near-forward and near-backward directions. The accuracy of the aforementioned three methods is investigated by comparing their results with those from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method for hexagonal particles at the refractive index of 1.3+i1.0. For particles with fixed orientations, it is found that the SIM and the VIM are comparable in accuracy and applicable when the size parameter is on the order of 20. The ray-spreading effect on the phase function is evident from the results of various size parameters. For randomly oriented particles, the DPR is more efficient than the SIM and the VIM.

Abstract:We demonstrate a wavelength-dependent spatial lateral beam shift of a reflective Gaussian beam on the surface of multilayer thin-film coatings. Numerical analysis of the behavior of a Gaussian-form light beam incident on the surface of the coatings is performed. The theoretical analysis is for a two-dimensional light sheet. The spatial lateral beam dispersion can be determined rigorously from the numerical wave field in the region of the incident medium. The coatings present a spatial dispersion effect much larger than in previous reports. The thin-film coatings can act not only as positive spatial dispersion devices but in a proper case, also as negative spatial dispersion devices. As such, the devices produce a wavelength-dependent negative lateral shift of the reflective beam. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and the Maxwell stress tensor approach we present the first rigorous full-wave solution of the optical forces acting on spherical microparticles immersed in a two-dimensional vector Airy beam beyond the paraxial approximation. The critical aspect lies in evaluating efficiently and accurately the partial wave expansion coefficients of the incident Airy beam, which are achieved by using the vector angular spectrum representation for a variety of polarizations. The optical field distributions are then simulated to show the self-accelerating and self-healing effects of the Airy beam. The dielectric and gold microparticles are shown to be trapped within the main lobe or the nearby side-lobes mostly by the transverse gradient optical force while driven forward along the parabolic trajectory of the Airy beam by the longitudinal scattering force. It is thus demonstrated theoretically that the vector Airy beam has the capability of precisely transporting both dielectric and metallic microparticles along the prespecified curved paths.

Abstract:The selection of the type of the structured beam is great importance in the study of optical and first-order rainbow scattering by a particle. The Airy light-sheet is a specific type of limited-diffracting beam (in 2D), which has been used in investigations related to radiation forces and torque. Equally important and of practical significance is the study of the electromagnetic/optical resonance and first-order rainbow scattering by a dielectric sphere. The purpose of this paper is to calculate the electromagnetic resonance scattering, energy efficiencies and far-field scattered intensity of a lossless homogeneous dielectric spherical particle of arbitrary size, illuminated by a linearly-polarized non-diffracting electromagnetic Airy light-sheet. A rigorous parametric study is undertaken here to investigate the effect of varying the light-sheet parameters γ, kw0, and its polarization state as well as the size parameter ka of the lossless dielectric sphere on the scattering efficiencies and intensity. The analysis is extended to examine the first-order rainbow scattering phenomenon in the context of Airy light-sheets with different polarizations. Numerical results show that kw0, γ, ka and the state of polarization affect the amplitude and scattering directivity patterns of the efficiencies and intensity. Rainbow scattering arises along the polar scattering angle θ=143°, and is minimally influenced by the different values of the parameters kw0, γ, polarization, and ka. The results are of some practical significance in optical resonance scattering and related applications in optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, particle characterization, and the measurement of temperature, velocity and size of a liquid jet to name a few applications.

Abstract:Discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method is an efficient method for computing electromagnetic (EM) field of nanometer/micrometer-sized dielectric particles with arbitrary geometric shape and topology. In this work we employ the DDA method to calculate the optical force of dielectric shaped particles embedded in optical tweezers made from focused Gaussian laser beams. The EM force is calculated based on the self-consistent solution of EM field distribution and discrete dipole moment distribution within the particles. The DDA method agrees well with the Mie theory for spherical dielectric particles and this supports the effectiveness of the DDA method in handling optical forces in optical tweezers. The optical force for shaped particles such as cubes, rectangles, cylinders, and core-shell composite particles shows many interesting features. The force strongly depends on the orientation of the particle with respect to the laser beam propagation and polarization direction and the aspect ratio of the anisotropic particle. For a core-shell composite particle the zero-force balance point shifts from the particle center to its two sides. When an additional particle comes close a trapped particle, the perturbation effect strongly depends on the relative location of the center of the focused laser beam with respect to the two particles. Furthermore, the geometry of shaped particles not only affects the magnitude of the optical force but also influences the optical trap stiffness.

Abstract:We present the electromagnetic fields of vector Pearcey beams by employing the vector angular spectrum representation. The beams maintain the inherent properties of autofocusing performance and inversion effect. Based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and Maxwell stress tensor approach, we derive the partial-wave expansion coefficients of arbitrary beams with different polarization and the rigorous solution to evaluate the optical forces. Furthermore, we investigate the optical forces experienced by a microsphere placed in vector Pearcey beams. We study the effects on the longitudinal optical force arising from the particle size, permittivity and permeability. This exotic curved trajectory transport of particles by vector Pearcey beams may find applications in the case where the transport path is partly blocked.

Abstract:Optical properties of the fog haze of ammonium sulphate particles including sphere, ellipsoid and cluster consisting of 10 spheres are calculated by using Discrete dipole approximation method (DDA); The change of the efficiency factor with these particles of size parameters and the variation of the ratio of scattering field intensity and the incident field intensity with the scattering angle are obtained and analyzed. The calculation these parameters laid a solid foundation for the following processing of the scattering characteristics of complex particles and the light transmission in the medium of fog haze.

Abstract:Using vector potential and spectrum representation, we derive the expressions of the Airy evanescent field existed at the interface. Utilizing these expressions and the Arbitrary Beam Theory, the optical forces exerted on a Mie dielectric particle in the Airy evanescent field were theoretically investigated in detail. Numerical results show that the optical forces exhibit strong oscillations which are corresponding to the distributions of the evanescent field. With the increasing the size of particle radius, Morphology Dependent Resonance occurs for the particle with specific refractive index. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We present a rigorous full wave calculation of the optical force on a dielectric cylindrical particle of an arbitrary size under the illumination of one dimensional (1D) Airy beam. The radiation force is written in terms of the cylindrical partial wave expansion coefficients of the non-paraxial 1D Airy beams. Our simulation results demonstrate that an Airy beam can accelerate the microparticles along its parabolic trajectory, while transverse to which the particles are trapped at the center of its main lobe, corroborating the possibility of the long distance particle transport by means of an Airy beam.

Abstract:The optical force exerted on a Rayleigh dielectric spherical particle by a photonic jet is investigated in the framework of the Rayleigh approximation. The photonic jet is generated by a plane wave illuminating a Generalized Luneburg Lens (GLLs). The electric field of the photonic jet is calculated using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA). The effects of wavelength of incident plane wave, focal length and radius of the GLLs on optical force are analyzed. Numerical results show that the stability of the captured particles can be controlled by changing the incident wavelength, focal length and radius of the GLLs.

Abstract:We investigate the optical trapping of a Rayleigh particle by a linearly or radially polarized Gaussian beam. The Mie theory is applied to obtain a full solution, with the incident beam being described by the mixed dipole model, which is beyond the paraxial approximation. We then obtain approximate analytical expressions for the optical force, equilibrium position, and trap stiffness for a Rayleigh particle. At equilibrium, the displacement for the particle from the focus scales like a(3) (where a is the radius) for a transparent particle, owing to scattering, whereas for absorptive particles it scales like C+Da(2), owing to absorption. The trap stiffness is found to be proportional to a(3), in agreement with the recent experiment. The radially polarized beam is found to be superior to the linearly polarized beam in the Rayleigh regime in terms of its ability to trap. It is found that the larger the ratio of epsilon(r)/epsilon(i), the closer the equilibrium to the focus, and thus higher stability.

Abstract:In this paper, using an angular spectrum method, we develop an analytical theory for Airy surface plasmon wave excited in a classical Kretschmann setup. It is found that the center of an Airy surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave has a giant positive lateral shift, and the sidelobes move forward along the surface. The intensity of the Airy SPP wave is greatly enhanced, the corresponding optical forces can be enhanced by more than one order of magnitude. Importantly, we show that the sidelobes of the Airy SPP beam can lead to the splitting of optical force spectra with the variation of incident angle, which is accompanied by strong oscillations emerging at the optimal metal layer thickness. Moreover, the effects of multiple scatterings of the Airy SPP wave between the particle and the metal layer are also discussed. The theoretical analysis could open up new perspectives for the applications of Airy beam in optical manipulation and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.
Average Dissipative and Dipole Forces on A Three-Level Atom in A Laguerre-Gaussian Beam

Abstract:By means of the optical Bloch equations based on the atomic density matrix elements, the general expressions of the average dissipative force, dipole force and the mechanical torque acting on a A-configuration three-level atom in a linearly-polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam (LGB) with an angular momentum of lh are derived, and the general properties of the average dissipative and dipole force on the three-level atom in the linearly-polarized LGB are analysed. We find a resonant property (with two resonant peaks) of the dissipative force and a non-resonant property (with two pairs of non-resonant peaks) of the dipole force on the three-level atom, which are completely different from those on the two-level atom. Our study also shows that all of general expressions on the three-level atom will be simplified to those on the two-level atom in the approximation of large detuning.

Abstract:The optical force on a non-spherical particle subjected to a loosely focused laser beam was calculated using the dynamic ray tracing method. Ellipsoidal particles with different aspect ratios, inclination angles, and positions were modeled, and the effects of these parameters on the optical force were examined. The vertical component of the optical force parallel to the laser beam axis decreased as the aspect ratio decreased, whereas the ellipsoid with a small aspect ratio and a large inclination angle experienced a large vertical optical force. The ellipsoids were pulled toward or repelled away from the laser beam axis, depending on the inclination angle, and they experienced a torque near the focal point. The behavior of the ellipsoids in a viscous fluid was examined by analyzing a dynamic simulation based on the penalty immersed boundary method. As the ellipsoids levitated along the direction of the laser beam propagation, they moved horizontally with rotation. Except for the ellipsoid with a small aspect ratio and a zero inclination angle near the focal point, the ellipsoids rotated until the major axis aligned with the laser beam axis.
Optical Forces on Submicron Particles Induced by Full Poincaré Beams

Abstract:In this paper, we have considered the optical forces acting on submicron particles induced by arbitrary-order full Poincaré (FP) beams. Different from the traditional scalar beams, the optical forces of the FP beams include three contributions: the scattering, gradient, and curl forces. The last contribution is due to both the vectorial properties of the FP beams' polarization and the rotating phase structure of the FP beams. We analytically derive all components of the optical forces of the FP beams acting on Rayleigh particles. The numerical results show that the optical curl force is very significant to the absorbing Rayleigh particles, and it has the same order with the scattering force. The total vortex force fields and their trapping effects of different order FP beams on the absorbing dielectric and metallic Rayleigh particles are discussed in detail. Our results may stimulate further investigations on the trapping effect of various vector-vortex beams on submicron or nanometer sized objects.

Abstract:We propose an improved FDTD method to calculate the optical forces of tightly focused beams on microscopic metal particles. Comparison study on different kinds of tightly focused beams indicates that trapping efficiency can be altered by adjusting the polarization of the incident field. The results also show the size-dependence of trapping forces exerted on metal particles. Transverse tapping forces produced by different illumination wavelengths are also evaluated. The numeric simulation demonstrates the possibility of trapping moderate-sized metal particles whose radii are comparable to wavelength. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:One of the theoretical challenges in studying optical trapping is the decomposition of the optical force into the gradient force (conservative component) and scattering force (nonconservative component), which can be achieved either for Raleigh particles or for very large particles in the regime of ray optics. However, for the moderate particles in between these two limits, the scenario is still a mystery. In this paper we present a theoretical approach to bridge this gap and fully split the optical force acting on a spherical particle immersed in a generic monochromatic free-space optical field into two such essentially different components, which is efficient even for large particles with the exact consideration of light polarization, thus offering a benchmark for examining the effective range for application of ray optics. Our approach models general optical fields by a series of homogeneous plane waves. The analytical expressions for the gradient and scattering parts of the optical force exerted on a spherical particle of arbitrary size illuminated by multiple interferential plane waves are then derived. As examples of applications, we investigate the gradient and scattering forces acting on a dielectric particle immersed in the Bessel beam. Our results are in excellent agreement with those obtained based on ray optics methods when the illuminated particle is large enough, while exhibiting effects of Mie resonance that are totally missing in the ray optics for moderate particle sizes. Finally, we study the effect of particle size on the gradient force acting on a spherical particle sitting in multiple interferential plane waves. Our extensively numerical results, up to a size as large as 2000 illuminating wavelengths, suggest an overall decreasing tendency in the ratio of the magnitude of the gradient force to that of the total force as the particle size increases.

Abstract:The behavior of an ellipsoidal particle subjected to a vertical optical force by a loosely focused laser beam in a uniform flow was studied numerically. The fluid flow and the particle motion were separately solved and coupled using the penalty immersed boundary method, and the optical force was calculated using the dynamic ray tracing method. The optical force and optically induced torque on the ellipsoidal particle varied according to the aspect ratio and initial inclination angle. The ellipsoidal particle, whose major axis was initially aligned with the laser beam axis, was more migrated as the aspect ratio increased. The migration distance also depended on the initial inclination angle, even for a given ellipsoidal particle shape. As the laser beam power increased and the flow velocity decreased, the effect of the initial inclination angle increased. The ellipsoidal particles with different aspect ratios could be effectively separated if the rotation along the spanwise direction was suppressed. Moreover, the migration distance could be predicted analytically by introducing a new dimensionless number Sc to represent the ratio of the optical force to the viscous force for the ellipsoidal particles.

Abstract:The optical forces can be used to manipulate the particles whose dimensions ranging from some tens of nanometers to larger than a hundred nanometers. An electromagnetic wave exerting force on a metal particle at the wavelength far from the particle's plasmon resonance wavelength resembles trapping high refractive index dielectric particle. When designing the optical trapping experiments, we must consider the power of the incident light, the optical force produced by the incident light and the size of the particle being manipulated. The trapping of dielectric nanoparticles was studied with numeric simulation of Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. We use the total-field/scattered-field consistency boundary approach in FDTD method to simulate the focused incident beam interacting with the dielectric particles. The ten-cell-thick uniaxial perfectly matched layer (UPML) absorbing boundary condition is introduced to simulate the extension of the computation domain to infinity. The result field distributions in FDTD then are substituted into the Maxwell stress tensor to calculate the optical forces. The numeric simulation demonstrates the possibility of trapping dielectric particles transversely whose radii are comparable to wavelength.
