Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:The vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave carring orbital angular momentum (OAM) that exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wave front. It is expected to provide a new dimension of the physical parameters for the multiplexing and manipulating EM wave, and bring a new opportunity to the traditional EMs. However, there are many obstacles in the practical applications in radio domain. We excavate out that the vorticity and orthogonality are the two essential characteristics of the vortex waves. Based on this, it is proposed to use vortex wave mode group to modify spatial structure and form structured EM beams. This kind of beams not only retain the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the traditional OAM wave, but also avoid the inherent defects in the applications of the traditional vortex EM waves. In this chapter, the construction and manipulation of the OAM-based structured radio beams are investigated. The vorticity and orthogonality of this kind of structured radio beams are analyzed. Several antennas for the structured radio beams are designed, and the potential applications in the radar detection and wireless communications are envisioned.

Abstract:Low-intensity light beams carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), commonly known as vortex beams, have garnered significant attention due to promising applications in areas ranging from optical trapping to communication. In recent years, there has been a surge in global research exploring the potential of high-intensity vortex laser beams and specifically their interactions with plasmas. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advances in this area. Compared to conventional laser beams, intense vortex beams exhibit unique properties such as twisted phase fronts, OAM delivery, hollow intensity distribution, and spatially isolated longitudinal fields. These distinct characteristics give rise to a multitude of rich phenomena, profoundly influencing laser-plasma interactions and offering diverse applications. The paper also discusses future prospects and identifies promising general research areas involving vortex beams. These areas include low-divergence particle acceleration, instability suppression, high-energy photon delivery with OAM, and the generation of strong magnetic fields. With growing scientific interest and application potential, the study of intense vortex lasers is poised for rapid development in the coming years.

Abstract:This article reviews recent progress leading to the generation of optical vortex beams. After introducing the basics of optical vortex beams and their promising applications, we summarized different approaches for optical vortex generation by discrete components and laser cavities. We place particular emphasis on the recent development of vortex generation by the planar phase plates, which are able to engineer a spiral phase-front via dynamic or geometric phase in nanoscale, and highlight the independent operation of these two different phases which leads to a multifunctional optical vortex beam generation and independent spin-orbit interaction. We also introduced the recent progress on vortex lasing, including vortex beam generation from the output of bulk lasers by modification of conventional laser cavities with phase elements and from integrated on-chip microlasers. Similar approaches are also applied to generate fractional vortex beams carrying fractional topological charge. The advanced technology and approaches on design and nanofabrications enable multiple vortex beams generation from a single device via multiplexing, multicasting, and vortex array, open up opportunities for applications on data processing, information encoding/decoding, communication and parallel data processing, and micromanipulations.

Abstract:An integrated device, which consists of a variable amplitude splitter and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) emitter, is proposed for the superposition of optical vortex beams. With fixed wavelength and power of incident beam, the OAM of the radiated optical superimposed vortex beam can be dynamically tuned. To verify the operating principle, the proposed device has been fabricated on the SOI substrate and experimentally measured. The experimental results confirm the tunability of superimposed vortex beams. Moreover, the ability of independently varying the OAM flux and the geometric distribution of intensity is illustrated and discussed with numerical simulation. We believe that this work would be promising in various applications.

Abstract:We have proposed an approach for rapid generation of perfect vortex beam without side lobes through a digital micromirror device (DMD). Employing this method, the amplitude and phase of far field can be controlled indirectly by changing the rotation state of each unit on the DMD. The perfect vortex beams of equal rings diameter independent of their topological charges are generated commendably and the side lobes are avoided. Moreover, we have demonstrated rapid switching among the generated orbital angular momentum modes at the speed of 10 kHz, which is much faster than that of the usual method realized by spatial light modulators (SLMs). The proposed method is very beneficial for the optical communication and trapping or manipulating the small particle based on orbital angular momentum modes.

Abstract:In the past three decades, vortex beams (VBs) with orbital angular momentum (OAM) have attracted extensive attention in the fields of optical manipulation, image processing, optical communication, and optical measurement. Here, we demonstrate the generation of multi-OAM mode VBs using an intracavity diffraction edge modulation method by selectively “clipping” the high-order modes of the optical field through variable aperture diaphragms and variable slits. Multi-OAM mode VBs with 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 vortices are generated, and the phase singularities in vortices are verified through interference experiments. We propose the principle of intracavity mode superposition and obtain the corresponding intensity and phase profiles by simulation. The generated VBs can maintain stable OAM propagation within the range of 83 mm. This work breaks the traditional understanding of generating multi-OAM mode VBs and provides guidance for the design of special vortex laser devices.

Abstract:Thirty years ago, Coullet et al. proposed that a special optical field exists in laser cavities bearing some analogy with the superfluid vortex. Since then, optical vortices have been widely studied, inspired by the hydrodynamics sharing similar mathematics. Akin to a fluid vortex with a central flow singularity, an optical vortex beam has a phase singularity with a certain topological charge, giving rise to a hollow intensity distribution. Such a beam with helical phase fronts and orbital angular momentum reveals a subtle connection between macroscopic physical optics and microscopic quantum optics. These amazing properties provide a new understanding of a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, including twisting photons, spin–orbital interactions, Bose–Einstein condensates, etc., while the associated technologies for manipulating optical vortices have become increasingly tunable and flexible. Hitherto, owing to these salient properties and optical manipulation technologies, tunable vortex beams have engendered tremendous advanced applications such as optical tweezers, high-order quantum entanglement, and nonlinear optics. This article reviews the recent progress in tunable vortex technologies along with their advanced applications.

Abstract:Optical vortices are the light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM), helical phase fronts and azimuthal component of the wave vector. The demand for miniaturization and scalability requires avoiding shortcomings of bulk optics via photonic integration. The integrated OAM emitters are designed to generate and manipulate OAM beams. Photonic integration is compatible with high purity of single mode emission and high efficiency, achieving controllable mode superposition and multiplexing. The potential applications in microscopy, micromanipulation, telecommunications and quantum information are presented and reviewed.

Abstract:Vortex beams (VBs) are structured beams with helical wavefronts carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) and they have been widely used in lots of domains, such as optical data-transmission, optical tweezer, quantum entanglement, and super-resolution imaging. The ability to generate vortex beams with favorable performance is of great significance for these advanced applications. Compared with extra-cavity schemes, such as spatial light modulation, mode conversion, and others which transform other modes into vortex modes, solid-state vortex lasers can output vortex beams directly and show advantages including a compact structure, high robustness, easy to integrate, and low cost. In this review, we summarize intra-cavity generation approaches to vortex beams in solid-state lasers. Our work on 1.6μm eye-safe vector vortex lasers is also introduced.

Abstract:Optical vortex phase beams have unique amplitudes and phase distributions, rendering them sensitive to the position and symmetry of modulating structures. This sensitivity can facilitate their applicability to optical communications. We propose a method for modulating the topological charge of input vortex beams using a pinhole screen. By changing the pinhole arrangement to match the phase of the vortex beam and considering the Fresnel diffraction theory, the transmission light field is calculated numerically. In addition, the intensity map of the adjustable topological charges is measured near the origin, with the experimental results suitably agreeing with the theoretical simulation results. The diffraction field modulated by spiral pinholes has various orbital angular momentum modes, including the increase and decrease of orbital angular momentum, especially when the incident vortex beam is more complex. The proposed method opens new possibilities for the use of vortex beams in advanced optical applications with improved capabilities and functionalities.

High-performance transmission of optical vortices through scattering media with opaque-lens field transformation theory

Abstract: The applications of vortex beam in biomedical field are always hindered by light scattering of biological tissues. Recently wavefront shaping technology has shown the potential in focusing a structured light field through scattering media. Herein we have proposed a novel theory to describe the field transformation property of the opaque lens. This theory makes it possible to generate foci with specified amplitude and phase profiles by well-designing the incident field. We verify the validity of this theory by experimentally generating doughnut-shaped foci with various topological charges, and the foci match well with the theoretical predictions. Meanwhile, we have also analyzed the limitations of our approach, and it reveals that there is a trade-off between the thickness of the medium and the acceptance spatial bandwidth of the incident field. Our approach will inspire new research ideas for the deep-tissue applications of vortex beam in optics and dynamics, which is significant to numerous potential bio-photonics technologies.

Abstract:Longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a fundamental property of light that has been the subject of extensive research and applied to diverse important applications, such as optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing. Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse OAM, where the OAM vector is orthogonal to the direction of light propagation. As the carrier for this unique OAM, the spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex has attracted considerable interest. Here, we provide a general overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances on such vortices, presenting their synthesis and measurement strategies, highlighting their nontrivial properties in linear propagation and interaction with nonlinear matter, and discussing the possible future trends and challenges.

Abstract:Optical vortex, typically characterized by a helical phase front, results in a possession of orbital angular momentum. In recent years, teleportation of the vortex mode using novel beams with peculiar features has gained great interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the propagation dynamics for a new class of the auto-focusing vortex circular Pearcey beam (VCPB), which is theoretically described by delivering the coaxial or off-axial spiral phases into the circular Pearcey beam (CPB), forming the crescent or bottle-like focal structure with self-rotation. Notably, such a hybrid beam with various types is experimentally obtained through a digital micromirror device (DMD) with the binary amplitude holography, and this DMD-based modulation scheme combined with controllable vortex modes enables dynamic switching among the VCPBs. We also measure the topological phase by interferometry and we explain the beam property on the basis of Poynting vector, showing a good agreement with the simulations. Further, the number, location and mode of embedded vortices could offer multiple dimensions of flexibility for target beam modulation, thus the experimentally controllable VCPBs will bring potential to high-speed optical communications and particle manipulations that require dynamic shaping.

Abstract:Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are considered to hold significant prospects in fields such as super-resolution imaging, high-capacity communications, and quantum optics. Therefore, the techniques of vortex beam generation have attracted extensive studies, in which the development of metasurfaces brings new vigor and vitality to it. However, the generation of reconfigurable vortex beams by metasurfaces at the incidence of arbitrary polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves holds challenges. In this study, an efficient and reconfigurable strategy utilizing PB phase-modulated circularly polarized waves and dynamic phase-modulated linearly polarized waves is proposed, enabling a polarization-locked fully polarization vortex beams generator. Based on this strategy, we designed and fabricated a prototype of the vortex beam generator for full polarization, which verifies the rotating Doppler effect and generates a time-varying vortex beam. All the results have been verified by simulation and measurements. In addition, the proposed strategy can be easily extended to other frequency regions and holds potential in areas such as information encryption, biosensing, and OAM multiplexing communication.

Abstract:Abstract Optical vortices (OVs) carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have attracted considerable interest in the field of optics and photonics owing to their peculiar optical features and extra degree of freedom for carrying information. Although there have been significant efforts to realize OVs using conventional optics, it is limited by large volume, high cost, and lack of design flexibility. Optical metasurfaces have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their unprecedented capability in the manipulation of the amplitude, phase, polarization, and frequency of light at a subwavelength scale. Optical metasurfaces have revolutionized design concepts in photonics, providing a new platform to develop ultrathin optical devices for the realization of OVs at subwavelength resolution. In this article, we will review the recent progress in optical metasurface-based OVs. We provide a comprehensive discussion on the optical manipulation of OVs, including OAM superposition, OAM sorting, OAM multiplexing, OAM holography, and nonlinear metasurfaces for OAM generation and manipulation. The rapid development of metasurface for OVs generation and manipulation will play an important role in many relevant research fields. We expect that metasurface will fuel the continuous progress of wearable and portable consumer electronics and optics where low-cost and miniaturized OAM related systems are in high demand.
