Abstract:The partition functions of Hermitian one-matrix models are known to be tau-functions of the KP hierarchy. In this paper we explicitly compute the elements in Sato grassmannian these tau-functions correspond to, and use them to compute the n-point functions of Hermitian one-matrix model.

Abstract:Using the matrix-resolvent method and a formula of the second-named author on the $n$-point function for a KP tau-function, we show that the tau-function of an arbitrary solution to the Toda lattice hierarchy is a KP tau-function. We then generalize this result to tau-functions for the extended Toda hierarchy (ETH) by developing the matrix-resolvent method for the ETH. As an example the partition function of Gromov--Witten invariants of the complex projective line is a KP tau-function, and an application on irreducible representations of the symmetric group is obtained.

Integrable Lax Hierarchies, their Symmetry Reductions and Multi-Matrix Models

Abstract:Some new developments in constrained Lax integrable systems and their applications to physics are reviewed. After summarizing the tau function construction of the KP hierarchy and the basic concepts of the symmetry of nonlinear equations, more recent ideas dealing with constrained KP models are described. A unifying approach to constrained KP hierarchy based on graded $SL(r+n,n)$ algebra is presented and equivalence formulas are obtained for various pseudo-differential Lax operators appearing in this context. It is then shown how the Toda lattice structure emerges from constrained KP models via canonical Darboux-Bäcklund transformations. These transformations enable us to find simple Wronskian solutions for the underlying tau-functions. We also establish a relation between two-matrix models and constrained Toda lattice systems and derive from this relation expressions for the corresponding partition function.

Abstract:We give a matrix formulation of the Hamiltonian structures of constrained KP hierarchy. First, we derive from the matrix formulation the Hamiltonian structure of the one-constraint KP hierarchy, which was originally obtained by Oevel and Strampp. We then generalize the derivation to the multi-constraint case and show that the resulting bracket is actually the second Gelfand-Dickey bracket associated with the corresponding Lax operator. The matrix formulation of the Hamiltonian structure of the one-constraint KP hierarchy in the form introduced in the study of matrix model is also discussed

Abstract:We show that the generating series of some Hodge integrals involving one or two partitions are τ-functions of the KP hierarchy or the 2-Toda hierarchy, respectively. We also reformulate the results as a relationship between the relative invariants of some local Calabi-Yau geometries and integrable hierarchies and present some more examples using the topological vertex.

Abstract:We consider multi-component Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy of type C (the multi-component CKP hierarchy) originally defined with the help of matrix pseudo-differential operators via the Lax-Sato formalism. Starting from the bilinear relation for the wave functions, we prove existence of the tau-function for the multi-component CKP hierarchy and provide a formula which expresses the wave functions through the tau-function. We also find how this tau-function is related to the tau-function of the multi-component Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy. The tau-function of the multi-component CKP hierarchy satisfies an integral relation which, unlike the integral relation for the latter tau-function, is no longer bilinear but has a more complicated form.

Abstract: In this work we study the tau-function $Z^{1D}$ of the KP hierarchy specified by the topological 1D gravity. As an application, we present two types of algorithms to compute the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$. The first is to use (fat or thin) topological recursion formulas emerging from the Virasoro constraints for $Z^{1D}$; and the second is to use a formula for the connected $n$-point functions of a KP tau-function in terms of its affine coordinates on the Sato Grassmannian. This is a sequel to an earlier work.

Abstract:Modified CKP (mCKP) hierarchy is an important integrable hierarchy, that is related to CKP hierarchy through Miura link. It has been proven that there exists a tau pair (τ0,τ1) for mCKP hierarchy. Further we find that mCKP hierarchy can be fully determined by CKP tau function and corresponding CKP eigenfunction. Based on this, we construct mCKP tau functions by CKP Darboux transformations and also present the vacuum expectation value of free bosons. As a byproduct, determinant formula for 〈1|eH(to)β0eβn22eβn−122⋯eβ122g|0〉 is also derived.

Abstract:We present exactly solvable modifications of the two-matrix Zinn-Justin-Zuber model and write it as a tau function. The grand partition function of these matrix integrals is written as the fermion expectation value. The perturbation theory series is written out explicitly in terms of series in strict partitions. The related string equations are presented.

Abstract:We show that any multi-component matrix KP hierarchy is equivalent to the standard one-component (scalar) KP hierarchy endowed with a special infinite set of abelian additional symmetries, generated by squared eigenfunction potentials. This allows to employ a special version of the familiar Darboux-B"acklund transformation techniques within the ordinary scalar KP hierarchy in the Sato formulation for a systematic derivation of explicit multiple-Wronskian tau-function solutions of all multi-component matrix KP hierarchies.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the matrix-resolvent method to the study of the Dubrovin--Zhang type tau-functions for the constrained KP hierarchy and the bigraded Toda hierarchy of $(M,1)$-type. We show that the Dubrovin--Zhang type tau-function of an arbitrary solution to the bigraded Toda hierarchy of $(M,1)$-type is a Dubrovin--Zhang type tau-function for the constrained KP hierarchy, which generalizes the result in [10, 35] for the Toda lattice hierarchy and the NLS hierarchy corresponding to the $M=1$ case.

Abstract:We propose, in bihamiltonian formalism, a version of the Toda lattice hierarchy that is satisfied by the two point correlation functions of the CP1 topological sigma model at genus one approximation, and we also show that this bihamiltonian hierarchy is compatible with the Virasoro constraints of Eguchi–Hori–Xiong up to genus two approximation.

Abstract:By using pseudo-differential operators containing two derivations, we extend the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy to a certain KP-mKP hierarchy. For the KP-mKP hierarchy, we obtain its Bäcklund transformations, bilinear equations of Baker-Akhiezer functions and Hirota equations of tau functions. Moreover, we show that this hierarchy is equivalent to a subhierarchy of the dispersive Whitham hierarchy associated to the Riemann sphere with its infinity point and one movable point marked.

Abstract:We present a new form of the multi-boson reduction of KP hierarchy with Lax operator written in terms of boson fields abelianizing the second Hamiltonian structure. This extends the classical Miura transformation and the Kupershmidt-Wilson theorem from the (m)KdV to the KP case. A remarkable relationship is uncovered between the higher Hamiltonian structures and the corresponding Miura transformations of KP hierarchy, on one hand, and the discrete integrable models living on {\em refinements} of the original lattice connected with the underlying multi-matrix models, on the other hand. For the second KP Hamiltonian structure, worked out in details, this amounts to finding a series of representations of the nonlinear $\hWinf$ algebra in terms of arbitrary finite number of canonical pairs of free fields.

Abstract:We derive an explicit formula for the connected $(n,m)$-point functions associated to an arbitrary diagonal tau-function $\tau_f(\boldsymbol{t}^+,\boldsymbol{t}^-)$ of the 2d Toda lattice hierarchy using fermionic computations and the boson-fermion correspondence. Then for fixed $\boldsymbol{t}^-$, we compute the KP-affine coordinates of $\tau_f(\boldsymbol{t}^+,\boldsymbol{t}^-)$. As applications, we present a unified approach to compute various types of connected double Hurwitz numbers, including the ordinary double Hurwitz numbers, the double Hurwitz numbers with completed $r$-cycles, and the mixed double Hurwitz numbers. We also apply this method to the computation of the stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb P^1$ relative to two points.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of one-loop integrals by investigating the connection between their singularity structures and geometric configurations in the projective space associated to their Feynman parametrization. We analyze these integrals by two recursive methods, which leads to two independent algebraic algorithms that determine the symbols of any one-loop integrals in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. The discontinuities of Feynman diagrams are shown to arise from taking certain "spherical contour" residues in Feynman parameter space, which is geometrically interpreted as a projection of the quadric surface (associated to the Symanzik polynomial at one loop) through faces of the integration region (which is a simplex). This geometry also leads to a manifestly Lorentz-invariant understanding for perturbative unitarity at one loop.

Abstract:With the square eigenfunctions symmetry constraint, we introduce a new extended matrix KP hierarchy and its Lax representation from the matrix KP hierarchy by adding a new $\tau_B$ flow. The extended KP hierarchy contains two time series ${t_A}$ and ${\tau_B}$ and eigenfunctions and adjoint eigenfunctions as components. The extended matrix KP hierarchy and its $t_A$-reduction and $\tau_B$ reduction include two types of matrix KP hierarchy with self-consistent sources and two types of (1+1)-dimensional reduced matrix KP hierarchy with self-consistent sources. In particular, the first type and second type of the 2+1 AKNS equation and the Davey-Stewartson equation with self-consistent sources are deduced from the extended matrix KP hierarchy. The generalized dressing approach for solving the extended matrix KP hierarchy is proposed and some solutions are presented. The soliton solutions of two types of 2+1-dimensional AKNS equation with self-consistent sources and two types of Davey-Stewartson equation with self-consistent sources are studied.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss how to construct the bilinear identities for the wave functions of the (γn, σk)-KP hierarchy and its Hirota’s bilinear forms. First, based on the corresponding squared eigenfunction symmetry of the KP hierarchy, we prove that the wave functions of the (γn, σk)-KP hierarchy are equal to the bilinear identities given in Sec.3 by introducing N auxiliary parameters zi, i = 1,2,…,N. Next, we derived the bilinear equations for the tau-function of the (γn, σk)-KP hierarchy. Then, we obtain the bilinear equations for the tau-function of the mixed type of KP equation with self-consistent sources (KPESCS), which includes both the first and the second type of KPESCS as special cases by setting n = 2 and k = 3. Finally, using the relation between the Hirota bilinear derivatives and the usual partial derivatives, we show the procedure of translating the Hirota’s bilinear equations into the mixed type of KPESCS.
