Abstract:In spite of numerous studies on mechanical behaviors of nanowires (NWs) focusing on the surface effect, there is still a general lack of understanding on how the internal microstructure of NWs influences their deformation mechanisms. Here, using quantitative in situ transmission electron microscopy based nanomechanical testing and molecular dynamics simulations, we report a transition of the deformation mechanism from localized dislocation slip to delocalized plasticity via an anomalous tensile detwinning mechanism in bitwinned metallic NWs with a single twin boundary (TB) running parallel to the NW length. The anomalous tensile detwinning starts with the detwinning of a segment of the preexisting TB under no resolved shear stress, followed by the propagation of a pair of newly formed TB and grain boundary leading to a large plastic deformation. An energy-based criterion is proposed to describe this transition of the deformation mechanism, which depends on the volume ratio between the two twin variants and the cross-sectional aspect ratio.

Abstract:Twin–twin intersections are often observed in face-centered cubic (FCC) metallic nanostructures, which have important contributions to the plastic deformation and strengthening of FCC metals with low stacking fault energies. However, a deep insight into the underlying mechanism involved in the formation and evolution of twin–twin intersections remains largely lacking, especially in experiments. Here, by conducting the in situ straining experiments under high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), we directly visualize the dynamic evolution of a twin–twin intersection in Au nanowire at the nanoscale. It shows that dislocations in the incoming twin can either glide onto or transmit across the barrier twin via dislocation interaction with the twin boundary, resulting in the twin–twin intersection. Dynamic twinning and de-twinning of the twin–twin intersection govern the whole deformation of the nanowire. These findings reveal the dynamic behaviors of twin–twin intersection under mechanical loading, which benefits further exploration of FCC metals and engineering alloys with twin–twin intersection structures.
In Situ TEM Study on the Nanomechanical Behaviors of Metallic Nanowires

Abstract:In this dissertation, the relationships between structure-mechanical properties-deformation mechanisms in face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metallic nanowires have been studied using in situ TEM nanomechanical testing. It is well known that smaller is stronger and the widely-observed size effect is believed to arise from dislocation interactions inside nanocrystals. However, the interaction mechanisms in small-volume nanocrystals remain unexplored. Here, it was found that surface-nucleated dislocations can strongly interact inside the confined volume of Au nanowires, which led to a new type of dislocation-originated stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT), at variance to the widely-believed vacancy-originated SFT. The atomic-scale processes of nucleation, migration and annihilation of dislocation-originated SFT were revealed, shedding new light onto the strain hardening and size effect in small-volume materials. Although nanoscale twinning is an effective mean to enhance the strength of metals, twin-size effect on the deformation and failure of nanotwinned metals remains largely unexplored, especially at the minimum twin size. Here, a new type of size effect in nanotwinned Au nanowires is presented. As twin size reaches the angstrom-scale, Au nanowires exhibit a remarkable ductile-to-brittle transition that is governed by the heterogeneous-to-homogeneous dislocation nucleation transition. Quantitative measurements show that approaching such a nanotwin size limit gives rise to the ultra-high strength in Au nanowires, close to the ideal strength limit of perfect Au. Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystals. At the nanoscale, higher stresses are required for plastic deformation than that in bulk, which favors twinning over dislocation slip. Indeed, deformation twinning has been well-documented in FCC nanocrystals. However, it remains unexplored in BCC nanostructures. Here, it shows that twinning is the dominant deformation mode in BCC-tungsten nanocrystals. A competition between twinning and dislocation slip occurs when changing the loading orientations, attributed to the defect growth controlled plasticity in BCC nanocrystals. Several important commonalities and differences in FCC and BCC nanocrystals deforming at nanoscale are further proposed. The results from this dissertation advance fundamental understanding of plastic deformation in a broad class of metals and alloys, and are of technological importance for degradation control and future design of ultra-strength nanomaterials.

Abstract:The competition between dislocation slip and deformation twinning in body-centered cubic (BCC) nanocrystals can be strongly influenced by the deformation conditions. In this study, we investigate the deformation of [112]-oriented BCC tungsten nanowires under different loading modes. It shows that dislocation plasticity is a predominant deformation mode under uniaxial tension, while deformation twinning prevails when non-uniaxial stress is applied. The interfaces of bending-induced twinning are composed of numerous stepwise {112} twin boundaries. These findings shed light on the deformation mechanism of BCC nanocrystals under complex loading conditions.
Discrete Twinning Dynamics and Size-Dependent Dislocation-to Twin Transition in Body-Centred Cubic Tungsten

Abstract:Body-centred cubic（BCC） metals are known to have unstable intrinsic stacking faults and high resistance to deformation twinning, which can strongly influence their twinning behaviour. Though twinning mechanisms of BCC metals have been investigated for more than 60 years, the atomistic level dynamics of twinning remains under debate, especially regarding its impact on competition between twinning and slip. Here, we investigate the atomistic level dynamics of twinning in BCC tungsten（W） nanowires using in situ nanomechanical testing. Quantitative experimental studies directly visualize that deformation twins in W nanowires have a minimum size of six-layers and grow in increments of approximately three-layers at a time, in contrast to the layer-by-layer growth of deformation twins in face-centred cubic metals. These unique twinning dynamics induces a strong competition with ordinary dislocation slip,as exhibited by a size-dependent dislocation-to-twin transition in W nanowires, with a transition size of ～40 nm. Our work provides physical insight into the dynamics of twinning at the atomic level, as well as a size-dependent dislocation-twinning competition, which have important implications for the plastic deformation in a broad class of BCC metals and alloys.
Tensile Failure Modes in Nanograined Metals with Nanotwinned Regions

Abstract:Nanotwinned (NT) regions can compensate the lower ductility of nanograined (NG) matrix so that NG metals with NT regions can achieve high strength and modest ductility. Main factors affecting the strength and ductility of the NG metals with NT regions have not been systematically and numerically investigated. Based on the strain gradient plasticity and Johnson–Cook failure criterion, computer simulations are carried out to clarify the effects of twin spacing together with shape and distribution of NT regions on their strength and ductility. Our calculations indicate that these attributes have significant effects on the overall ductility. In particular, it is discovered that a critical twin spacing marks the reversal of the overall ductility, that is, the overall ductility decreases and then increases with the continuous increase of twin spacing. Compared with the circular NT regions, the square and oblique square ones are found to provide higher overall strength and ductility. For the circular and oblique square NT regions, array arrangement tends to perform better in strengthening and toughening, while for the square NT regions, staggered arrangement is advisable. We have also uncovered three distinct failure modes, including fracture of matrix, fracture of NT regions, and interface debonding. Furthermore, fracture of NT regions can enhance the overall ductility and lead to the reversal of the overall ductility. It is believed that this study has provided significant insights into the roles of twin spacing together with shape and distribution of NT regions on the overall strength and ductility of this novel class of metals.

Abstract:This article focuses on in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization to explore twins in face-centered-cubic and body-centered-cubic monolithic metals, and their impact on the overall mechanical performance. Taking advantage of simultaneous nanomechanical deformation and nanoscale imaging using versatile in situ TEM tools, direct correlation of these unique microscopic defects with macroscopic mechanical performance becomes possible. This article summarizes recent evidence to support the mechanisms related to strengthening and plasticity in metals, including nanotwinned Cu, Ni, Al, Au, and others in bulk, thin film, and nanowire forms.

Abstract:Twinning is commonly activated in plastic deformation of low stacking-fault face-centered cubic (Fcc) metals but rarely found in body-centered cubic (Bcc) metals under room temperature and slow strain rates. Here, by conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at atomic scale, we discover that, in stark contrast to those in most Fcc metals, a majority of deformation twins in Bcc metals are unstable and undergo spontaneously detwinning upon unloading. Such unexpected instability of Bcc twins is found to be closely related to the prevalence of the inclined twin boundaries-a peculiar structure where twin boundaries are not parallel to the twinning plane, and the degree of instability is in direct proportion to the fraction of the inclined twin boundary. This work provides significant insights into the structure and stability of deformation twins in Bcc metals.
In Situ Observation of High Bending Strain Recoverability in Au Nanowires

Abstract:Metallic nanowires (NW) usually exhibit unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Despite extensive research on their mechanical behavior, the atomic-scale deformation mechanisms of metallic nanowires remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigate the deformation behavior of Au nanowires embedded with a longitudinal twin boundary (TB) under different loading rates using in situ nanomechanical testing integrated with atomistic simulations. The Au nanowires exhibit a recoverable bending strain of up to 27.5% with the presence of TBs. At low loading rates, the recoverable bending is attributed to the motion of stacking faults (SFs) and their interactions with TBs. At higher loading rates, the formation of high-angle grain boundaries and their reversible migration become dominant in Au nanowires. These findings enhance our understanding of the bending behavior of metallic nanowires, which could inspire the design of nanodevices with improved fatigue resistance and a large recoverable strain capacity.
Interactions Between Dislocations and Penta-Twins in Metallic Nanocrystals

Abstract:Dislocation interactions with twin boundary (TB) have been well-established in nanotwinned metals. Penta-twins, as an extreme of crystal twinning, are tacitly assumed to be more effective at blocking dislocation motions than conventional single or coplanar nanotwins. However, the mechanism underlying the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins remains largely unclear. Here, by combining in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) nanomechanical testing and atomistic simulations, we rationalize the fundamental interactions between dislocations and penta-twins in Au nanocrystals. Our results reveal that the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins show some similar behaviors to the ones in the cases of coplanar nanotwins, including dislocation impedance at TBs, cross-slip into the twinning plane and transmission across the TB. In addition, penta-twins also exhibit some unique behaviors during dislocation interactions, including multiple cross-slip, dislocation-induced core dissociation and climb-induced annihilation/absorption at the penta-twin core. These findings enhance our mechanistic understanding of dislocation behaviors in penta-twins, shedding light on the accessible design of high-performance nanomaterials with multi-twinned nanostructures.

Abstract:Recently, a transition of deformation mechanism from localized dislocation slip to delocalized plasticity via an anomalous tensile detwinning mechanism has been discovered in bitwinned metallic nanowires (NWs) with a single twin boundary (TB) running parallel to the NW length. However, experiments showed that the anomalous tensile detwinning in most of bitwinned NWs does not propagate through the whole NW, which limits the NWs failure strain when compared to the twinning-induced superplasticity in single-crystalline NWs. An elusive but fundamentally important question is that what factors might affect the propagation of tensile detwinning in such bitwinned NWs. In addition, can this tensile detwinning mechanism be applied to other types of twinned NWs? Here, based on in situ transmission electron microscopy testing and molecular dynamics simulations, a competition between shear localization and tensile detwinning is identified. By dividing the tensile detwinning mechanism into two steps and investigating each step separately, it is found that the quality of a single-crystalline embryo formed during step one determines the succeeding detwinning propagation (step two) and the final plastic strain. Furthermore, this anomalous tensile detwinning mechanism is extended to other metallic NWs with multiple TBs running parallel to the length direction, such as asymmetric pentatwinned NWs and NWs with multiple parallel TBs. This work highlights the important role of detwinning in large plasticity in metallic NWs with different twin structures.
Shrinking tension-compression asymmetry of Au nanowires by designed nanotwin boundaries

Abstract:<p>Atomistic simulation is applied to investigate the tension-compression (T-C) asymmetry of the nanotwinned Au nanowires (NTWs) with the different twin orientations in this paper. The result demonstrates that the T-C asymmetry is not only represented by the different yield stress under tensile and compressive load, namely yield asymmetry, but also highlighted by the different strengthening effect of twin boundaries, namely strengthening asymmetry. The yield asymmetry in the NTWs becomes weaker than that in their single-crystal counterparts and highly twin orientation-dependent. In more details, the compressive yield stress is larger than the tensile yield stress when the twin orientation angle is 0°, 19.47° and 90°, while the opposite is true as the twin orientation angle changes to 54.74°. The strengthening effect is much obvious under tensile load in the NTW with a twin orientation angle of 0°, while no significant difference is found in the NTW with a twin orientation angle of 90°. In contrast, the NTWs with a twin orientation angle of 19.47° and 54.74° exhibit great reduced tensile and compressive strength. This work not only deepens our understanding of the mechanical behavior of the nanotwinned metal but also provides a new strategy to control mechanical behavior <em>via</em> nanotwin boundaries design.</p>

Abstract:Metallic nanowires (NWs) with twin boundaries (TBs) running parallel to the NW length direction exhibit unusual plastic strain recovery owing to the interaction of dislocations with TBs. Here, based on in-situ transmission electron microscopy nanomechanical testing and molecular dynamics simulations, we report observation and quantification of dislocation nucleation, interaction with TBs, and retraction in bi-twinned Ag NWs with a single TB along the NW length direction. Our results show that leading partial dislocations nucleated from the free surface can be hindered by the TB, and upon unloading all or part of the leading partials can retract due to the repulsive force from the TB, leading to full or partial plastic strain recovery (Bauschinger effect), respectively. The bi-twinned Ag NWs can undergo stress relaxation, even at a stress below the yield strength, where the plastic strain also recovers upon unloading. The relaxation and recovery behaviors are compared to those of penta-twinned Ag NWs. Our results illustrate that the internal TBs in NWs can interact with surface-nucleated dislocations, leading to time-dependent plastic strain recovery and Bauschinger effect.

Abstract:Introducing nanotwins with extremely fine twin boundary spacing (TBSs ≤ 10 nm) in metals with high stacking fault energy (SFE) has posed a long-standing challenge, hindering an in-depth understanding of their strengthening mechanisms. Here, we synthesized a series of columnar-grained nanotwinned structures with extremely fine TBSs in Ni and Ni alloys with high SFEs, and systematically investigated their mechanical responses under various loading directions relative to the coherent twin boundaries (CTBs). Under the loading directions of 90° and 0°, contrary to the softening effect observed in nanotwinned metals with equiaxed grains, continuous strengthening was found to extend to the finest TBS of 1.9 nm in the columnar-grained nanotwinned Ni and Ni alloy. This resulted in an ultra-high strength of 4.3 and 3.8 GPa, respectively. Combined experimental and simulational studies were employed to investigate the mechanism for continuous strengthening. As the TBS decreased to a critical value (3-5 nm), the strengthening mechanism was revealed to transform from CTB obstructing dislocations to the dislocation starvation-dominated mechanism, which led to a shift in deformation behavior from homogeneous to localized plasticity. Distinct from the detwinning-induced softening effect, the dislocation-starvation mechanism resulted in continuous strengthening, with the yield strength following a power-law function concerning TBS. Additionally, our results illustrate that nanotwins deformed via significant detwinning at the loading direction of 45°, leading to strengthening that primarily depends mainly on the column width rather than TBS.

Abstract:Using molecular-dynamic (MD) simulation, we studied the mechanical responses of fivefold twinned silver nanowire (NW) for tensile and torsional deformations. Although the relaxed configuration of fivefold twinned NW possesses higher potential energy than 〈110〉 single crystalline NW, the internal stable of the unique structure provides a larger energetic barrier to defect formation. Under tensile loading condition, we find that the defect emission and propagation in fivefold twinned NW is prevented by the pre-existing twin boundaries. While the plastic deformation under torsion yield through the nucleation of coaxial dislocations, showing a quite uniformly distribution as observed in the end of the wire. Generally, different external loading leading to different deformation modes, as reported in this paper, might be useful in avoiding for certain deformation mechanisms of metallic NWs.
A Constitutive Description of the Yield Strength and Strain Hardening Behaviors of Nano-Twinned Metals

Abstract:In this paper, a constitutive description of the true stress-strain behaviors of nano-twinned metals has been proposed. The size effects of nano-scale twin boundaries (TBs) and ultra-fine grain boundaries (GBs) are considered in the athermal stress. The evolution of the dislocation density with strain under the influence of strain rate and temperature is introduced in the thermal stress based on our previous meso-scale constitutive model. The new model can effectively describe the strength transition regime in nano-twinned metals. The proposed model’s predictions of true stress-strain relation curves for nano-twinned copper are compared with the experimental results of uniaxial tension tests for validation. The comparisons show that the previous models in literature for the dependence of initial yield strength on twin spacing cannot describe the experimental data correctly when the twin spacing tends to zero; however, the phenomenological model proposed in this paper for the twin spacing depending relation is theoretically rational and can well describe the experimental data in the whole range of twin spacing.

Abstract:Nanomaterials often surprise us with unexpected phenomena. Here, we report a discovery of the anti-twinning deformation, previously thought impossible, in nanoscale body-centered cubic (BCC) tungsten crystals. By conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy nanomechanical testing, we observed the nucleation and growth of anti-twins in tungsten nanowires with diameters less than about 20 nm. During anti-twinning, a shear displacement of 1/3 < 111 > occurs on every successive {112} plane, in contrast to an opposite shear displacement of 1/6 <(1) over bar(1) over bar(1) over bar > by ordinary twinning. This asymmetry in the atomic-scale shear pathway leads to a much higher resistance to anti-twinning than ordinary twinning. However, anti-twinning can become active in nanosized BCC crystals under ultrahigh stresses, due to the limited number of plastic shear carriers in small crystal volumes. Our finding of the anti-twinning phenomenon has implications for harnessing unconventional deformation mechanisms to achieve high mechanical preformation by nanomaterials.
Deformation mechanisms in nanotwinned metal nanopillars

Abstract:Nanotwinned metals are attractive in many applications because they simultaneously demonstrate high strength and high ductility, characteristics that are usually thought to be mutually exclusive. However, most nanotwinned metals are produced in polycrystalline forms and therefore contain randomly oriented twin and grain boundaries making it difficult to determine the origins of their useful mechanical properties. Here, we report the fabrication of arrays of vertically aligned copper nanopillars that contain a very high density of periodic twin boundaries and no grain boundaries or other microstructural features. We use tension experiments, transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulations to investigate the influence of diameter, twin-boundary spacing and twin-boundary orientation on the mechanical responses of individual nanopillars. We observe a brittle-to-ductile transition in samples with orthogonally oriented twin boundaries as the twin-boundary spacing decreases below a critical value (∼3-4 nm for copper). We also find that nanopillars with slanted twin boundaries deform via shear offsets and significant detwinning. The ability to decouple nanotwins from other microstructural features should lead to an improved understanding of the mechanical properties of nanotwinned metals.

Abstract:In this paper, the mechanical behavior of Al, Ni, Cu, Au and Ag nanowires (NWs) with a coherent twin boundary parallel to their longitudinal axis was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. Our results show that the twin-structure NWs with circular cross-section exhibited a strong twin thickness strengthening effect, which led to their yield stress continuing to increase as the twin thickness decreased. The plastic deformation mechanisms of these NWs were significantly affected by both γsf/γusf [the ratio between the stacking fault energy (γsf) and the unstable stacking fault energy (γusf)] and the twin thickness. As the twin thickness decreased to three atomic layers, we discovered two new deformation models in the NWs. For Al and Ni, their plasticity was accommodated by lattice distortion resulting in brittle-like necking. Meanwhile, for Cu, Au and Ag, their plasticity was accommodated by lattice distortion and rearrangement that led to new grain formation in the NWs.
