Abstract:The outstanding intrinsic properties of graphene have boosted further research and development for regenerative medicine as confirmed by the increasing number of articles in the topic. The unique electrical properties of graphene may provide a meaning access for neural tissue regeneration since the functions of nervous system depend on electrical activities, as well as the neural cells. Herein, a thorough account of the latest progress in graphene-based materials and their latent applications for neural tissue regeneration are given. In this review, the mechanism of nerve regeneration and a review of therapy methods are presented. Recent progresses mostly focusing on the mechanical and electrical properties of graphene are described. In particular, we focus on the in vitro studies of graphene-based materials used for neural tissue regeneration, including the conditions under various stimulations or not. Moreover, the evaluations of graphene-based-materials in animal models are highlighted. Based on these advanced studies, we have gained a holistic vision of graphene-based materials application in neural tissue regeneration. Future perspectives are also addressed in the conclusion.
