Abstract:(La1-xDyx)2/3Ca1/3MnO3(x=0,0.1,0.2) materials were successfully fabricated by solid state reaction.The effects of the cation disorder on the microstructure and electrical transport properties were investigated.The results from XRD and Rietveld refinement indicate that unit cell parameters and Mn-O bond distances and angles are distinctly varied with Dy doping content increase and MnO6 octahedra is distorted.The electrical transport properties show that the electrical conductivity decreases with Dy doping content increase and the electrical conductivity of all the samples is found to obey the small polaron hopping mechanism.Dy doping increases A-site cation disorder and affects the microstructure of all the samples.A-site cation disorder enhances the carrier scattering in the lattice and controls the electrical conductivity.

Abstract:The electronic transport and magnetism in half-doped Nd0.50Ca0.25Sr0.25MnO3 manganites have been investigated. Contrary to general half-doped system, it only displays a paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition associated with an insulator-metal transition instead of with any features of charge ordering. With the decrease of temperature, an electronic phase separation and spin glass state occur in low temperature. We suggest that the A-site cation disorder induced by the size mismatch between Sr2+ ion and Ca2+ ion is mainly responsible for this phenomenon.

Abstract:The A -site disorder effects on the stability of charge-ordered state in electron-doped manganite R 0.4 A 0.6 MnO 3 (where R = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, and A = Ca, Sr, Ba) are investigated by detailed measurements of transport, magnetism, and specific heat. The robust charge-ordered phase within the prototype sample can be successively suppressed by enhancing the A -site disorder, and finally an atomic-scale spin-glass state is evidenced in the highest disordered sample. However, no ferromagnetic phase can be observed; even the long-range charge-ordered antiferromagnetic phase is fully suppressed, which can be associated with the insufficient e g electron density in such an electron-doped manganite. This revealing is helpful for understanding the origin of ferromagnetic phase in nano-sized or B -site doped charge-ordered manganites with small e g electron density.

Abstract:Structural and magnetocaloric properties for the perovskite manganite La2∕3−xYxCa1∕3−ySryMnO3 (x<0.2) have been studied. These compounds with the fixed A-site average ionic radii of 1.204Å and Mn4+∕Mn3+ ratio were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction technique. The lattice parameters were obtained from refining x-ray diffraction diagrams preformed by Rietveld refinement method. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature TC increases abruptly owing to the increase in the competition between A-site size-disorder degree σ2 and double-exchange interaction resulting from Mn–O–Mn bond angle. Phase transition may be broadened due to the cation disordering at A-site. Sample with x=0.01 appears a large magnetic entropy ΔSM=3.3Jkg−1K−1 at the Curie temperature TC=274K, which may be used as a promising candidate for magnetic refrigerant near room temperature.

Abstract:By modulating the A-site cational size mismatch we introduce different A-site disorder strengths in large-bandwidth manganites such as La0.55Sr0.45MnO3, which are regarded as the typical ferromagnetic double exchange (DE) systems due to the relative large A-site cational mean radius (=1.23Å for La0.55Sr0.45MnO3). It is revealed that the increasing A-site disorder doesn't induce remarkable macroscopic change of the crystallographic structure and lattice constants, but causes notable change of the magnetotransport properties by suppressing the DE interaction and the ferromagnetism. For small A-site disorder, the long-range ferromagnetism is broken and replaced with the short-range antiferromagnetic regions embedded in the ferromagnetic matrix. The high A-site disorder will eventually lead to melting of the long-range ferromagnetic order into the short-range magnetically ordered clusters. And the enhanced magnetoresistant effects were found in the samples with intermediate disorder.

Abstract:A series of polycrystalline perovskite samples La0.65Nd0.05(Sr, Ba)0.3MnO3 were prepared by a sol–gel technique. Their permeabilities have been measured at different fields and temperatures. A pronounced dispersion of the relaxation was observed near the Curie temperature TC, which was obtained from the permeability vs. temperature curves. The effects of the average A-site cation radius 〈rA〉 and the A-site cation disorder parameter σ2(rA) on the permeability were investigated. With increasing 〈rA〉 and σ2(rA), the permeability of La0.65Nd0.05(Sr, Ba)0.3MnO3 increases linearly.

Abstract:Y and Sr co-doped La 2/3 Ca 1/3 MnO 3 films with different A-site cation disorder were deposited on Yttrium-stabilized ZrO 2 (YSZ) single crystal substrate by modified off-axis rf magnetron sputtering technology. The influences of A-site cation disorder and biaxial strain on the surface morphologies and transport properties are discussed in detail. At high temperature, the mechanism of conduction is changed from the small polaron hopping model to the variable-range hopping model with increasing cation disorder, which reveals that cation disorder induces carrier localization. The Curie temperature and the magnetoresistance decrease with the increase of cation disorder. It reveals the variation of phase separation to be caused by the increasing cation disorder which suppresses the long-range FM metal state.

Abstract:Cations of Y and Sr co-substituting for La and Ca at A site in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 compound, La2/3−xYxCa1/3−ySryMnO3, were synthesized successfully by solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction shows there is only one phase with the dopants of Y and Sr within x≤0.20 or y≤0.19. The lattice parameters along a-, b-, and c-direction remain almost unchanged with x≤0.20. The bond angle of MnOMn increases from 151.9° for x=0 to 172.7° for x=0.20 monotonically, which indicates that the Jahn–Teller effect in MnO6 octahedron decreases with increasing x. The temperature dependence of resistance with/without magnetic applied were measured and fitted theoretically. The metal-to-insulator transition temperature, TMI, decreases with increasing the Y content with x≤0.10 while TMI increases slightly with further increasing x. The Y-content dependence of magnetoresistance shows a parabolic behavior. The maximum MR value corresponds to x=0.08–0.10. We attributed these variations in the structure and transportation to the cation disorder due to the cation doping.

Abstract:La0.5-xDyxCa0.5-ySryMnO3 (x=0, 0.05, 0.08, 0.1, 0.14, 0.16, 0.2) polycrystalline samples were prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The A-site disordering is increased with the doping concentration x, and meanwhile the average ionic radius of A-site is kept constant. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were combined to investigate the microstructural distortion of MnO6 octahedron. Results show that the rotational vibration (RV) is the dominant distortion mode. With the A-site disordering increasing, RV mode is obviously hardened, and the Jahn-Teller distortion is enhanced. Properties investigation shows that the insulation is strengthened because of FM double exchange effect suppressed with A-site disordering increasing, and the magnetoresistance effect is weakened. A relatively significant magnetoresistance effect was observed in the low temperature region for the high-doped concentration sample, which may be related to the strong magnetic moment of Dy3+.

Abstract:Polycrystalline manganite oxides with different A-site cation disorder were synthesized. The hole concentration and average radius of A-site cation are kept unchanged while the A-site cation disorder increases linearly by Y and Sr co-doped in La2/3Ca1/3 MnO3. All these samples exhibit a paramagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic (FM) metal transition, and the transition temperature TC and TMI decrease while the transition width increases with increasing the A-site cation disorder. TMI is usually 10 K higher than TC for the small cation disorder samples. However, with increasing the cation disorder, TMI is about 60 K lower than TC, and the resistivity increases in magnitude while the magnetization decreases. The metal-to-insulator transition for samples with small cation disorder can be well described by a percolative model, which indicates FM-metal state and antiferromagnetic insulator state assuredly coexist in the transition interval. It reveals that cation disorder suppresses the long-range FM-metal state which results in the phase separation behavior in samples with large cation disorder.

Abstract:We systematically investigate the local disorder effect induced by size mismatch of A-site cation ions on crystallographic structure and magnetic transport behaviors of co-doped La2/3−xEuxCa1/3−ySryMnO3. We have prepared a series of Eu and Sr co-doped samples by keeping the average A-site cation radius preserved at 1.204Å and varying A-site cation disorder σ2=∑ixiri2−rA2, where xi is the fractional occupancy and ri is the ionic radii of i cation, respectively. Rietveld refinements show that with increasing doping level, the averaged lattice parameters vary slightly while the local atomic configurations in the unit cell vary obviously. This confirms that with doping single orbital disordered state is extended which is homogenous on macroscales, but inhomogenous at microscales due to lattice strain, as a consequence of random distribution of ions locating at A-site. Further resistance measurements show that the metal–insulator transition temperature (TMI) decreases linearly with the change of A-site disorder, whereas, larger and more broadening magnetoresistance occur. Analysis of inverse magnetic susceptibility has identified the coexistence of FM metallic and insulating clusters in compounds, thus, contributing to the magnetic inhomogeneity when disorder is present. In addition, magnetocaloric effect is greatly suppressed as a function of disorder. This is ascribed to the gradual loss of first-order magnetic transition. Our experimental findings could be coherently explained in the framework of phase separation.

Abstract:(111)-oriented [(SrMnO3)(1)/(LaMnO3)(2)](n) superlattices with artificial A-site cation ordering with respect to the compositionally equivalent La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films with a random distribution of the A-site dopants are fabricated. It is found that the ferromagnetism and electrical transport properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films are primarily independent of the degree of A-site cation ordering, as evidenced by their identical critical temperatures of phase transition. These results may reveal the spontaneous nature of the electronic phase separation, which is key to the colossal magnetoresistance effect in manganites. In contrast, compared to the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films, the A-site ordered (111) superlattices have a tendency to preserve oxygen vacancies inside, making them extremely difficult to be compensated by the post-annealing process.

Abstract:The 5 s/ 6 s (A-site)-3 d (B-site) based double perovskites enounce multiple aspects to study the interactive effects on structural (global and local), electronic, and other physical properties of synthesized compounds. The characteristic feature of this family is the B-site cations, which have comparative ionic radii and multivalency. Here, we report a detailed analysis of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Sr 2 FeMnO 6 (SFMO) and La-substituted SrLaFeMnO 6 (SLFMO). The relatively smaller radii but large valance La 3+ (1.36 Å) substitution at Sr 2+ (1.44 Å) sites led to adequate changes in the structural and physical properties. SLFMO crystallized in a lower crystal symmetry than SFMO, further confirmed by Raman analysis. Spectroscopic analyses showed that the Mn-valency compensates for the cationic disorder introduced by the La-substitution. These analyses also revealed that Mn and Fe preserve high spin states of their 3+ and 4+ valence states, and thus, the studied compounds also have Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion. These structural and electronic distortions affect the magnetic properties of SFMO and SLFMO. SFMO showed antiferromagnetic behavior, while SLFMO showed spin-glass-type characteristics.

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of A-site disorder, characterized by the average ionic radius (< r A >) and the cation mismatch (σ 2 ), on the structural, magnetic, critical behavior, and magnetic entropy changes of trisubstituted of Ba, Ca, and Sr in La 0.7 (Ba,Ca,Sr) 0.3 MnO 3 manganites. The sol-gel method was used to prepare polycrystalline samples. All series of compounds crystallize in rhombohedral symmetry with the R-3c space group. The linear relationship between lattice parameters, unit cell volume, and < r A > was observed. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized to validate the chemical composition of compounds. The unveiling of unusual behavior in the correlation between < r A > and σ 2 concerning magnetic properties, which is attributed to the complex simultaneous trisubstitution of divalent ions. A-site disorder causes distortions in the Mn-O bond length and Mn-O-Mn bond angle in the MnO 6 octahedral structure, which influences the double-exchange interaction and electronic bandwidth ( W ). Interestingly, the Curie temperature (T C ) value shows that it not only depends on < r A > but also on the value of σ 2 . Critical behavior analysis around T C was investigated by determining the values of the critical exponents ( β , γ , and δ ) using the Modified Arrott Plot (MAP) method. The estimated critical exponents show that the unconventional model establishes a short-range ferromagnetic order. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-∆S M ) was obtained with the lowest < r A > and σ 2 value. The analysis of the critical behavior and universal curve shows the second-order phase transition (SOPT) nature for all samples.

Abstract:Cation disordering in ABO(3) perovskite manganites plays the import role on their magnetism and transport properties. In the present, single phase of La2/3-xGdxSr1/3-yBayMnO3 ploycrystals are synthesized with fixing the averaged A-site ionic size of 1.247 angstrom. Subtle structural variations have been studied by Rietveld refinements using X-ray powder diffraction data. The unit cell symmetry remains unchanged with doping while the lattice parameters, Mn-O bond length, the Mn-O-Mn bond angle vary with the dopants. With increasing the Ba content, Mn-O bond length decreases while Mn-O-Mn bond angle increases, which indicates that the double-exchange interaction increases with Ba content. However, the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition temperature, T-c, decreases with Ba content, which confirms the strong suppression effect of cations disordering on magnetic ordering. The first-order to second-order magnetic phase transition is manipulated by a rival ship between A-site size-disorder degree and electron-lattice coupling for the sample system. In this system, we easy adjust the T-c above the room temperature. The transition temperature may be easily broadened by adjusting the cations disordering. It may be used as a promising candidate for magnetic refrigerant near room temperature.
