Abstract:In this paper, we propose a high-precision dual-comb ranging (DCR) method for short-distance measurement, avoiding carrier-envelope-offset locking. Cross-polarization detection is introduced, which makes better use of the intrinsic coherence of interferogram pairs over a short distance. We analyze the noise in the DCR system and propose a carrier-wave phase difference (CPD) calculation algorithm based on centroid extraction. The standard deviation of CPD is eight times less than that of the method we had proposed in a previous work, and the dynamic distance resolution is less than 10 nm at a distance of 10 µm. Besides, we compare the DCR result with the He-Ne laser interferometer from 0 to 4.8 mm, and the residual is found to be less than ±40 nm.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report a scheme that combines time-of-flight (ToF) ranging detection of multi-repetition-rate pulses with asymmetric dual-comb ranging (DCR) measurement. Notably, this combination extends the non-ambiguity range (NAR) of the DCR method without sacrificing its refresh rate and distance precision. With this scheme, we demonstrate absolute distance measurement of moving targets with an NAR of 1.5 km, which is 5× larger than that allowed solely by the DCR method for a given refresh rate at 500 kHz. The ranging precision in a single measurement of 2 µs reaches 10 µm at an effective distance of 571 m (down to 60 nm in 0.1 s). This combined scheme benefits remote sensing of high-speed objects.

Abstract:The accuracy of microwave ranging is mainly limited by the frequency instability of the oscillator that generates the carrier phase signal. A dual transponder carrier ranging method is used to minimize the oscillator noise by combining the reference and the to-and-fro measurements. This ranging approach together with pseudo-noise ranging or other means can be used to measure the inter-satellite distance with a high precision. The pseudo-noise ranging system or other ranging systems help to solve the integer circles while the dual transponder ranging system guarantees the accurate fractional circle. The two satellites work in the master-slave mode. The range measurements are derived on the master satellite while the slave satellite just coherently transfers the received signal, so that the dual transponder ranging system does not need to rely on the time tagging system to synchronize the two satellites. This study first describes the dual transponder carrier ranging system and shows how the system removes most of the oscillator noise components effectively. Then, a detailed design scheme on the frequency planning of the ranging system is presented and the supporting analysis illustrates the feasibility of this system. Based on the design innovation, a laboratory demonstration system is assembled to verify the realizability of the dual transponder ranging system. The experimental results demonstrate that a high level of accuracy (about 30 μm under laboratory circumstance) can be achieved by the use of the proposed dual transponder carrier ranging system.

Abstract:Dual-comb ranging (DCR) is an emerging absolute distance measurement method with rapid speed, high precision, and wide ambiguity range. DCR has important applications in remote sensing, large-scale manufacturing, and aerospace exploration. However, the typical DCR system requires cumbersome phase-locking electronics for frequency stabilization and distance calibration, which hinders the practical application of DCR. In this paper, we demonstrate a free-running DCR scheme based on two free-running mode-locked fiber lasers. Two fiber lasers are environment-shared to improve the anti-aliasing capability. We then introduce a self-calibration technique that can directly extract the subsampled repetition frequency information from the interferograms (IGMs). By using this technique, real-time calibration of measured distance can be achieved without extra repetition frequency detection module and frequency counter. The system realizes a 5.3 mu m precision for-1 m stand-off distance at-1 kHz acquisition speed. With averaging, the measurement precision drops to-101 nm at the averaging time of 3 s. The ambiguity range of our DCR system is-2.6 m due to the relatively small repetition frequency. For dynamic distance measurement, it shows good consistency with a commercial heterodyne interferometer. Our method provides a cost-effective scheme for high-performance absolute distance measurement, and it is promising for promoting DCR system out of the laboratory and realizing field-deployed applications.

Abstract:The most dominant error source for microwave ranging is the frequency instability of the oscillator that generates the carrier phase signal. The oscillator noise is very difficult to filter due to its extremely low frequency. A dual transponder carrier ranging method can effectively minimize the oscillator noise by combing the reference phase and the to-and-fro measurement phase from the same single oscillator. This method does not require an accurate time tagging system, since it extracts phases on the same satellite. This paper analyzes the dual transponder carrier ranging system by simulation of the phase measurements with comprehensive error models. Both frequency domain and time domain noise transfer characteristics were simulated to compare them with dual one-way ranging. The simulation results in the two domains conformed to each other and demonstrated that a high level of accuracy can also be achieved by use of the dual transponder carrier ranging system, with relatively simple instruments.

Abstract:We demonstrate a rapid and high-precision dual-comb ranging method with a significantly extended non-ambiguity range (NAR). By reasonably setting the polarization combining and splitting of two optical combs, we can obtain two sets of interferograms of signal comb and local oscillator comb interchanging simultaneously. This method allows us to extend the NAR to tens to hundreds of kilometers without changing the repetition rate of the signal comb. With this scheme, we demonstrate a dynamic distance measurement when a moving target crosses a measurement dead zone that is 3–4 times the NAR. The standard deviation of the residual distance is 1.48 μm with a 925 μs update rate. This rapid, high-precision, and NAR extension absolute distance measurement scheme will have broad potential in various ranging applications.

Abstract:A dual-comb ranging (DCR) system without spectral aliasing based on free-running fiber lasers was proposed. By monitoring the repetition frequency over time, we compensate for the instability of the optical pulse train from the free-running fiber lasers. We demonstrated a double-channel filtering structure that eliminates the aliasing between multiheterodyne beats in radio frequency interferograms. Without any frequency locking, the DCR system implements stable running for at least 60 min. The system realizes a 6-µm repetition precision without averaging and shows good consistency with a commercial interferometer.

Abstract:Dual-comb ranging (DCR) is an important method in absolute distance ranging because of its high precision, fast acquisition rate, and large measuring range. DCR needs to obtain precise results during distance measurements for a mobile target. However, the non-ambiguity range (NAR) is a challenge when pushing the dual-comb ranging to the industry field. This paper presents a solution for extending NAR by designing an algorithm and realizing it on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The algorithm is robust when facing the timing jitter in the optical frequency comb. Without averaging, the Allan deviation of the results in 1 ms is ∼3.89 μm and the Allan deviation of the results is ∼0.37 μm at an averaging time of 100 ms when the target object is standstill near the NAR. In addition, several ranging experiments were conducted on a mobile target whose speed was from ∼5 mm/s to ∼10 mm/s. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and robustness of our design. The implemented design is an online and real-time data processing unit that shows great industrial potential for using the DCR system.

Abstract:Absolute distance measurement with low return power, fast measurement speed, high precision, and immunity to intensity fluctuations is highly demanded in nanotechnology. However, achieving all these objectives simultaneously remains a significant challenge for miniaturized systems. Here, we demonstrate dual-comb ranging (DCR) that encompasses all these capabilities by using counter-propagating (CP) solitons generated in an integrated Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonator. We derive equations linking the DCR precision with comb line powers, revealing the advantage of microcomb's large line spacing in precise ranging. Leveraging the advantage, our system reaches 1-nm-precision and measures nm-scale vibration at frequencies up to 0.9 MHz. We also show that precise DCR is possible even in the presence of strong intensity noise and loss, using a mean received photon number as low as 5.5$\times$10$^{-4}$ per pulse. Our work establishes an optimization principle for dual-comb systems and bridges high performance ranging with foundry-manufactured photonic chips.

Abstract:To exploit the potential of a dual-comb absolute distance ranging system outside a well-controlled laboratory, a compact dual-comb structure is proposed. A beat frequency generated by the repetition rates of two frequency combs serves as an electric reference, which is easily built and maintains a long range and high resolution compared with traditional dual-comb systems. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of a heterodyne interferometer. The residuals range within -116.6 to 117.2 nm, the standard deviations vary from 46.3 to 137.9 nm, and the non-ambiguity range extension remains reliable throughout a 10-m test. Compared with Michelson-type dual-comb interferometers, this compact dual-comb system omits the redundant optical reference arm, promising practical applications of distance ranging.

Abstract:Optical ranging is a key technology in metrology. Optical frequency combs are shown to provide several advantages in light ranging, offering high precision with high acquisition rate. However, performance of traditional ranging systems based on microcombs is limited by the short ambiguity distance and non-real-time processing. Here, we show that dual-comb ranging system using coherent Kerr soliton microcombs and optical switch realizes extended ambiguity distance and provides a route to real-time processing. The ambguity distance is extended to 3.28 m from about 1.5 mm and the uncertainty reaches about 1.05 times 10^-7, while the system is compatible with low-bandwidth detectors. Combining coherent microcomb ranging systems with special FPGA could enable comb-based real-time ranging systems for several applications such as industrial process monitoring.

Abstract:A multi-pulse sampling dual-comb ranging (MS-DCR) method is proposed in this paper. Four sampling pulses and two signal pulses separated in the time domain are generated in a repetition period by fiber delay. Through multi-pulse linear optical sampling, eight cross-correlation interferograms (IGMs) are generated in an updating period. The proposed method realizes the multiplication of IGMs so that additional ranging results can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that we suppress any random noise by averaging the ranging results and improve the precision of the time-of-flight (TOF) method and carrier-wave interferometric (CWI) method simultaneously. The precision of TOF is improved from 3.85 µm to 1.39 µm without time averaging and that of CWI is improved from 25 nm to 11 nm. The TOF result can link to the interferometric phase with 15 ms averaging, and a precision of 0.48 nm is reached with 0.5 s averaging. The proposed technique overcomes the limitations of linear optical sampling in conventional dual-comb interferometers and achieves faster and higher precision distance measurements without decreasing the unambiguity range.

Abstract:Dual-comb ranging (DCR), with its superior overall performance compared to traditional ranging technologies, has recently attracted widespread interest in the research community. Nevertheless, the ranging distance or the material of the targets is limited by the detection sensitivity of optical asynchronous linear sampling. This limitation restricts the application of DCR in several highly significant scenarios. Here, we utilize the photon-counting method to dramatically break through the detection sensitivity to femtowatt. To overcome the impact of fiber-length wandering and achieve Michelson interference based absolute distance measurement, an orthogonal polarization interferometry-arm configuration and a reference-arm based photon-counting trigger protocol are proposed. This photon-counting DCR system can conduct long-period photon-counting coherently, thus, realizing the lowest detection power of phase-stabled DCR to date. The results show that with only 18 femtowatt average power detected, the time-of-flight and multi-wavelength interferometry yields a precision of 22 mu m and 8 nm in 3 min, respectively. This work paves the way for the field of large-scale spacecraft formation flying, synthetic aperture space telescope position attitude control, interplanetary positioning, and hard target distance measurement.

Abstract:Time-of-flight single-photon counting laser ranging offers an important tool for remote sensing and imaging. However, limited by the temporal properties of a single-photon detection and counting system, it encounters a challenge for high-resolution and high-precision distance metrology. Here, we incorporated dual-comb based laser ranging, an enabling technique for rapid distance measurements with high precision and large range ambiguity, with time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) technology and demonstrated its feasibility for precise laser ranging under a photon-starved condition. Based on interferometric measurements of two asynchronous 2.8-pW, 25-GHz electro-optic laser combs with TCSPC, micrometer-level ranging precision was achieved for consistent distance measurements (a stand-off distance of 15.6 m) over several days. New opportunities might open up for high-resolution and high-precision single-photon counting laser ranging.

Abstract:Abstract Optical frequency comb with evenly spaced lines over a broad bandwidth has revolutionized the fields of optical metrology and spectroscopy. Despite dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) offers a superb overall performance on spectral resolution, measurement bandwidth and refresh rate, these parameters are still constrained by the Nyquist-limited trade-off. Here, we propose a novel DCS system to overcome this limitation with tens of spectral acquisition rate improvement, which is built with two electro-optic frequency combs seeded by an ultralinearly swept light source. The proposed scheme records a spectrum spanning 304 GHz with a spectral resolution of 10 kHz in 1.6 ms, which achieves a spectral sampling-rate of 1.9×1010 points/s. We also demonstrate the 100-averaged results with 28.9 dB signal-to-noise ratio for high sensitivity measurement. The demonstration shows great prospect for precise measurement with significant performance breakthrough.
