Abstract:For better understanding the wetting behavior of spray droplets on leaf surfaces with the rice growth, dynamic wetting process of TX-100 solutions was investigated as an interpretation of the final equilibrium states. The results showed that the wetting behavior of TX-100 solution changes a lot with the growth stage, not only in the significant wettability decline but also the wetting transition concentration (2CMC - 10 CMC), which is considered as the effect of roughness on leaf surface. The variation trend was found more obvious in the early 10 and 30 day stages, while almost insignificant in the older growth stages. The apparent adsorption of TX-100 molecules at solid-liquid interfaces (ΓSL') was found 1.12–1.61 times higher than that at liquid-air interfaces (ΓLV'), and the adsorption ratio decreased with the plant growth. The work of adhesion was discussed with changes in concentration of TX-100 solution. Dynamic wetting behavior showed the wetting exponent increases from 0 to 0.1 with surfactant concentration, which would be due to the continuous increase in wetting behavior above CMC value. The results provide a possible advice for a more reasonable utilization of surfactant in spray liquid preparation in crop protection.
