Abstract:Owing to strong light-matter interaction, two-dimensional (2D) organic crystal is regarded as promising materials for ultrasensitive photodetectors, however it still received limited success due to degraded photoelectrical response and problems in controllable growth. Here, we find the growth of 2D organic crystal obeys Gibbs-Curie-Wulff law, and develop a seed-epitaxial drop-casting method to grow millimeter-sized 1,4-bis(4-methylstyryl)benzene 2D crystals on SiO2/Si in a thermodynamically controlled process. On SiO2/Si, a distinct 2D limit effect is observed, which remarkably enhances internal photoresponsivity compared with bulk crystals. Experiment and calculation show the molecules stack more compactly at the 2D limit, thus better molecular orbital overlap and corresponding changes in the band structure lead to efficient separation and transfer of photo-generated carriers as well as enhanced photo-gating modulation. This work provides a general insight into the growth and the dimension effect of the 2D organic crystal, which is valuable for the application in high-performance photoelectrical devices.

Abstract:Two novel photo-responsive chiral cyclic molecular switches constituted of stiff stilbene and binaphthyl moieties connected through alkyl chains of different length were fabricated. The cyclization synthetic strategy employed herein made it convenient to obtain the pure Z isomers rather than Z/E isomer mixtures. The detailed photo-switching behaviors of target compounds were studied by the UV–Vis absorption and circular dichroism spectra in dichloromethane. The twist angles of the binaphthyl of the switches were able to be reversibly modulated by Z/E isomerization of stiff stilbene unit under alternative UV light stimuli and influenced by the length of alkyl chain to some extent.

Abstract:Photochromic materials are those which can undergo reversible photo-switches between two different states or isomers upon alternative irradiation with different wavelengths of light accompanied by distinct photophysical and photochemical properties. Inspired by their special photo-switchable characteristics, a variety of light-driven functional materials have been exploited, such as ultrahigh-density optical data storage, molecular switches, logic gates, molecular wires, optic/electronic devices, multi-photon devices, surface/nanoparticle devices, liquid crystals, bio-imaging and so on. Apart from these, further creation of optoelectronic and photo-optical devices based on photochromic molecular switches which operate at both molecular and supramolecular levels have recently attracted many attentions. Thus photo-switchable compounds also have played an important role in sensing, self-assembly, aggregation-induced enhanced emission and photo-controlled biological systems. In particular, dithienylethene derivatives are one of the most promising families of photochromic compounds due to their excellent thermal-stability, remarkable fatigue-resistance, rapid response and fairly high photocyclization quantum yields as well as reactivity in the solid state. According to our recent research achievements, this article provides an overview of recent exciting progress mainly in the field of photochromic dithienylethene derivatives, from systems in solution to modified functional surfaces. Furthermore, based on current development of these photo-switchable systems, further development as well as existing challenges are also discussed and put in prospect.

Abstract:Organic electronics with π-conjugated organic semiconductors are promising candidates for the next electronics revolution. For the conductive channel, the large-area two-dimensional (2D) crystals of organic semiconductors (2DCOS) serve as useful scaffolds for modern organic electronics, benefiting not only from long-range order and low defect density nature but also from unique charge transport characteristic and photoelectrical properties. Meanwhile, the solution process with advantages of cost-effectiveness and room temperature compatibility is the foundation of high-throughput print electrical devices. Herein, we will give an insightful overview to witness the huge advances in 2DCOS over the past decade. First, the typical influencing factors and state-of-the-art assembly strategies of the solution-process for large-area 2DCOS over sub-millimeter even to wafer size are discussed accompanying rational evaluation. Then, the charge transport characteristics and contact resistance of 2DCOS-based transistors are explored. Following this, beyond single transistors, the p–n junction devices and planar integrated circuits based on 2DCOS are also emphasized. Furthermore, the burgeoning phototransistors (OPTs) based on crystals in the 2D limits are elaborated. Next, we emphasized the unique and enhanced photoelectrical properties based on a hybrid system with other 2D van der Waals solids. Finally, frontier insights and opportunities are proposed, promoting further research in this field.The advanced assembly strategies for large-area, two-dimensional crystals of organic semiconductors over sub-millimeter even to wafer size, electrical integrated transistors, as well as their burgeoning photoelectrical devices are discussed in this outlook.

Abstract:Exploring novel photoconductance switch crystalline materials with color indication is of the utmost importance. Herein, we reported a photochromic and photoconductive zinc organic framework, [Zn2(TDC)2(TPT)]·H2O, composed of electron-rich sulfur-containing compounds, 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TDC), as electron donor, and electron-deficient 2,4,6-tri-(4-pyridyl)-s-triazine (TPT) as the electron acceptor, which exhibited an uncommon electron transfer pathway. Upon photo-stimuli and subsequently storing in dark, the crystalline materials show reversible color changes from pale-yellow to green accompanied by the conductance switching from 4.3 × 10–9 to 1.9 × 10–9 S cm−1. The mechanism and electron transfer pathway of the stimuli-responsive materials have been explained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR), and single X-ray diffraction data. Upon light exposure, the electron could hop from both thienyl-S/carboxyl-O to s-triazine-N. This work not only offers a new approach to the modification of visible photoconducting switch by the crystal engineering strategy but also sheds light on a new electron transfer system. A single crystalline photoconductance switch with color indication has been constructed based on the thienyl-containing photosensitive zinc organic framework. It shows reversible color changes from yellow to green accompanied by conductance switching from 4.3 × 10–9 to 1.9 × 10–9 S·cm−1.

Abstract:The search for feasible strategies to construct molecular materials whose physical properties can be modulated dynamically by external stimuli, especially light for sunlight is the cleanest and most abundantly renewable energy source, has attracted increasing attention owing to their promising application in the field of detection, photo-electronic devices, information storage, etc. As a key branch, crystalline photochromic materials are usually formed by the combination of organic photoresponsive molecules and inorganic functional units. Under the stimuli of light, the changes of structures and some physical properties could occur, which provides a platform to develop photoswitching smart materials. To further promote the understanding and development of crystalline photochromic materials, in this review, we mainly focus on the representative smart photochromic hybrids with fast and stable multi-stimuli responsive behavior or with various switchable functions. In detail, in the first unit, the common design and synthesis strategy of crystalline photoresponsive materials will be demonstrated. The second section will introduce photochromic hybrids with novel structures and enhanced performance (multi-stimuli responsive, responsive rate). And the third section will present photochromic hybrids with photo-modulated luminescence (fluorescence, phosphorescence), photomagnetism, photoconductivity, photothermal conversion, or photoswitchable gas uptake behavior. Finally, the future challenges and opportunities for the development of photoresponsive smart hybrids will be addressed.

Abstract:A general methodology towards stable high-performance photocontrollable organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) by using photochromic spiropyrans (SP) combined with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a photoactive gate dielectric is reported. Capacitance and mobility transitions are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally when the SP molecules undergo their documented reversible photoisomerization: This universal strategy of incorporating molecular functionalities into OTFTs offers attractive new prospects for the development of molecular devices with tailored electronic and other properties.

Abstract:We demonstrate the use of P3HT-spiropyran blends as an active layer to achieve reversible photoswitching effects in solution-processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Conformational changes of spiropyrans triggered by light with different wavelengths produce two distinct interaction strengths at organic/organic interfaces that can reversibly modulate the channel conductance of OFETs in a noninvasive manner. This concept of organic-organic interfacial modification offers attractive new prospects for the development of organic electronic devices with desired properties.

Abstract:A novel stilben‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF) film for studying photopatterning is reported. Thanks to only parallel and short distance arrangement of olefin groups in the adjacent MOF layers triggering [2+2] photocycloaddition, the resulting 2D MOF film exhibits excellent photosensitive feature with a very short photoconversion time (<35 s), achieving high‐efficient, erasable photopatterning ranging from large to micron scale. The development of photosensitive materials for erasable photopatterning is of significant interest in anti‐counterfeiting and information storage applications. Herein two kinds of stilbene‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF) films with layer by layer method for studying photopatterning is reported. The resulting 2D Zn2(sdc)2 MOF film (sdc = 4,4′‐stilbenedicarboxylate) exhibits excellent photosensitive features with a very short photoconversion time (<35 s) while the 3D MOF Zn4O(sdc)6 film does not have the property due to the fact that only parallel and short distance arrangement of olefin groups in the adjacent MOF layers can trigger [2+2] photocycloaddition. Furthermore, the Zn2(sdc)2 film indicates obvious reversible fluorescent photoswitch behavior between yellow and blue fluorescence emission, which can achieve high‐efficient, erasable photopatterning with various sizes (ca. 20 microns to decimeter). This study not only develops a new kind of photosensitive crystalline network film but also provides erasable photopatterning from macroscopic to microscopic in optical applications.

Abstract:A new photochromic diarylethene bears two chiral carbon atoms was designed and synthesized. This compound keeps in liquid state at room temperature which is the first example for 1,2-dithienylalkene derivatives to our knowledge. Owning to the liquid state, this compound undergoes a much faster reversible photochromic reaction than some 1,2-dithienylalkene derivatives in solid state, at ambient temperature. In addition, the fluorescence property and the uses of this compound in photo switches and non-reductive storage material were discussed.

Abstract:Organic mechanoluminescent (ML) materials possessing photophysical properties that are sensitive to multiple external stimuli have shown great potential in many fields, including optic and sensing. Particularly, the photo‐switchable ML property for these materials is fundamental to their applications but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we successfully realize photo‐switchable ML by endowing reversible photochromic properties to a ML molecule, namely 2‐(1,2,2‐triphenylvinyl) fluoropyridine (o‐TPF). o‐TPF shows both high‐contrast photochromism with a distinct color change from white to purplish red, as well as bright blue ML (λML = 453 nm). The ML property can be repeatedly switched between ON and OFF states under alternate UV and visible light irradiation. Impressively, the photo‐switchable ML is of high stability and repeatability. The ML can be reversibly switched on and off by conducting alternate UV and visible light irradiation in cycles under ambient conditions. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the change of dipole moment of o‐TPF during the photochromic process is responsible for the photo‐switchable ML. These results outline a fundamental strategy to achieve for the control of organic ML, and pave the way to the development of expanded smart luminescent materials and their applications. Abstract:Molecular photoswitches are potent tools to construct dynamic functional systems and responsive materials in that can be controlled in a non-invasive manner. As a P-type photoswitch, stiff-stilbene attracts an increasing interest, owing to its superiority in quantum yield, significant geometric differences between isomers, excellent thermostability and robust switching behavior. Nevertheless, the UV-light-triggered photoisomerization of stiff-stilbenes has been a main drawback for decades as UV light is potentially harmful and has low penetration depth. Here, we provided a series of para-formylated stiff-stilbenes by Rieche ortho-formylation to achieve all-visible-light-responsiveness. Additional phenolic groups leave access to late-stage chemical modification facilitating design of molecules responsive to visible light. Remarkably, the photoisomerization of aldehyde-appended stiff-stilbenes could be fully manipulated by visible light, accompanied by a high photostationary state (PSS) distribution. These features render them excellent candidates for future visible-light-controllable smart materials and dynamic systems.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterostructures are attractive because they can provide versatile platforms for various applications but are limited by complex liquid epitaxial growth methods. Here, we employ photolithography to fabricate and control MOF-based heterostructured crystals via [4 + 4] photocycloaddition. A layered dysprosium-dianthracene framework, [Dy(NO3)3(depma2)1.5]·(depma2)0.5 (2) [depma2 = pre-photodimerized 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma)] underwent a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition at 140 °C to form [Dy(NO3)3(depma)(depma2)]·(depma2)0.5 (3). The dissociated anthracene moieties are face-to-face π-π interacted allowing a reversible photocycloaddition between 2 and 3. This structural transformation causes a luminescence switch between blue and yellow-green and thus can be used to fabricate erasable 2 + 3 heterostructured crystals for rewritable photonic barcodes. The internal strain at the heterostructure interface leads to photobending and straightening of the crystal, a photomechanical response that is fast, reversible and durable, even operating at 140 °C, making it promising for photoactuation. This work may inspire the development of intelligent MOF-based heterostructures for photonic applications.
A Universal Approach toward Light-Responsive Two-Dimensional Electronics: Chemically Tailored Hybrid van der Waals Heterostructures

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive hybrid van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs), composed of organic molecular switches superimposed on inorganic 2D materials (2DMs), can combine the outstanding physical properties of the latter components with the virtually infinite variety of tunable functionality of molecules, thereby offering an efficient protocol for the development of high-performance multifunctional materials and devices. The use of light as a remote control to modulate the properties of semiconducting 2DMs when interfaced with photochromic molecules suffers from both the limitation associated with the persistent photoconductivity characterizing the 2DMs and the finite thermal stability of the photochromic molecule in its different states. Here, we have devised a universal approach toward the fabrication of optically switchable electronic devices comprising a few nanometers thick azobenzene (AZO) layer physisorbed on 2D semiconductors supported on a trap-free polymer dielectric. The joint effect of the improved 2D/dielectric interface, the molecule's light-modulated dipolar doping, and the high thermal stability of cis-AZO offers the highest control over the reversible and efficient charge carrier tuning in 2D semiconductors with a preserved high performance in 2D field-effect transistors, as quantified in terms of carrier mobility and Ion/ Ioff ratio. The device has the potential to operate as an optical memory with four current levels and long retention time (>15 h). Furthermore, by using a CMOS-compatible micropatterning process, the photoswitchable resistor-diode transition has been achieved on hybrid lateral heterojunction devices. Our approach is of general applicability toward the generation of high-performance hybrid vdWHs for the emergence of functional and responsive devices.

Abstract:Bisthienylethenes (BTE) are one of the most promising families of photochromic compounds used in molecular switches because of their fatigue resistance and thermally irreversible properties. Moreover, such molecular switches hold tremendous potential applications in molecular electronic and photonic devices such as optical data storage media, optical limiters, logic gates, molecular wires and sensors. Herein we highlight some recent developments of photochromic bisthienylethene derivatives with large two-photon absorption (TPA) or excellent two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) which can be potentially used in three-dimensional (3D) optical data storage media, two-photon switches and photon electronic devices. What's more, we examine some promising approaches on bisthienylethene derivatives such as supramolecular self-assembled structures, coordination with metal and ligands, capping on nanoparticles or assemblies on metal surfaces, which would tune the photochromic properties of photochromic switches for further applications.

Abstract:Dihydroazulene (DHA)/vinylheptafulvene (VHF) molecular switches are incorporated into the polymer semiconductor of organic field‐effect transistors. Owing to the switchabilty of DHA/VHF, the characteristics of the transistors can be reversibly modulated by using UV light and heat as stimuli. Depending on the UV dose, different current levels can be programmed, which makes these devices promising candidates for sensor or memory applications. An innovative possibility to introduce additional functionality to organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) is to employ photochromic molecules, which undergo reversible isomerization under applied stimuli such as irradiation with specific wavelengths. As a result, the transistors not only can be switched on/off by the applied voltages, they can also be programmed by alternate triggers, such as light. Here, reversible switching of OFETs is presented by blending various dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene photoswitches into polythiophene‐based conjugated polymers. In result, the transfer characteristics of the transistors are altered significantly through UV irradiation. In contrast to current literature on different photoswitches such as spiropyrans or diarylethenes, the backreaction is induced thermally and not via visible light irradiation and reproducibly yields the pristine transistor characteristics. This reversible switching upon alternating UV irradiation and thermal annealing is quantified by figures of merit such as the magnitude of drain current, threshold voltage, and subthreshold swing. Irradiating the devices with different doses of UV light shows that the magnitude of switching directly depends on the respective UV dose, hence enabling a multi‐level electronic system. Furthermore, long‐term cyclability over 100 steps of repeated UV light exposure and thermal annealing is demonstrated.
