Abstract:Three lumped-parameter magnetic circuit (LMC) models of dual-armature flux-switching permanent magnet (DA-FSPM) machines are proposed and compared in this article. First, the characteristics of the magnetic flux fields produced by the PM, stator armature reaction, and rotor armature reaction flux sources are analyzed, with particular attention paid to the air-gap and slot leakage flux paths. Based on the former analyses, three LMC models are developed, which consider the air-gap and slot leakage permeances in different ways. The electromagnetic performances of the DA-FSPM machines are predicted by the three LMC models and validated by the finite-element method, including the flux linkage, average torque, inductance, and power factor. The model accuracy sensitivity to the geometric parameters, copper loss allocation, electric loading, stator pole/rotor tooth number combinations, power level, and conductor distributions are analyzed. It shows that appropriate consideration of slot leakage permeance is important to improve the model accuracy.

Abstract:Permanent-magnet vernier machine (PMVM) is a relatively new type of PM machines. An analytical subdomain model accounting for tooth-tips and flux modulation poles is developed to accurately predict on-load field distributions in PMVMs. Based on two-dimensional (2-D) polar coordinate and magnetic vector potential, this method solves the Maxwell's equations in slot, air-gap, flux modulation pole slot (FMPS), and PM regions. Consequently, the electromagnetic performance such as cogging torque, back-electromotive force (EMF), electromagnetic torque, power factor, and magnet loss are calculated. In addition, the model can also be used for the evaluation of demagnetization withstand capability. The finite-element analysis (FEA) and experimental results validate the accuracy of the developed analytical model.

Abstract:Purpose – Due to high electromagnetic torque at low speed, vernier machines are suitable for direct-drive applications such as electric vehicles and wind power generators. The purpose of this paper is to present an exact sub-domain model for analytically predicting the open-circuit magnetic field of permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) including tooth tips. The entire field domain is divided into five regions, viz. magnets, air gap, slot openings, slots, and flux-modulation pole slots (FMPs). The model accounts for the influence of interaction between PMs, FMPs and slots, and radial/parallel magnetization. Design/methodology/approach – Magnetic field distributions for slot and air-gap, flux linkage, back-EMF and cogging torque waveforms are obtained from the analytical method and validated by finite element analysis (FEA). Findings – It is found that the developed sub-domain model including tooth tips is very accurate and is applicable to PMVM having any combination of slots/FMPs/PMs. Originality/value – The main contributions include: accurate sub-domain model for PMVM is proposed for open-circuit including tooth-tip which cannot be accounted for in literature; the model accounts the interaction between flux modulation pole (FMP) and slot; developed sub-domain model is accurate and applicable to any slot/FMP/PM combinations; and it has investigated the influence of FMP/slot opening width/height on cogging torque.

Abstract:Aim to fulfill the design requirements of a pneumatic proportional directional valve, a novel bidirectional proportional electromagnet with integrated lineal Hall position sensor was proposed. Magnetic circuit model and finite element model were established separately. Both static force vs. armature stroke characteristic and Hall sensor output vs. armature position were tested on a newly designed test platform. The experimental result shows a good linear magnetic spring characteristic of the proportional electromagnet, which further ensures a unique spool auto reset capability for directional valves. The mass of the armature is considerably reduced, thus it will benefit the overall performance of high speed pneumatic proportional directional valves.

Abstract:The conventional electromagnetic valve actuator employs solenoid structure and its coil produces a great quantity of heat. In order to achieve large output force,save energy and reduce the heating of coil,this paper presented a novel design of bi-stable linear actuator with permanent magnets( PM),in which the steady states can be hold by permanent magnets circuit and the state conversion is realized by energizing the coil with positive or reverse direction pulse. 3D finite element analysis( FEA) model was established. PM height and air-gap space between PM and armature were optimized based on the actuatoru0027s FEA model. The experimental and the simulation results of the prototype prove that the actuator and the 3D FEA method are effective and practicable.

Abstract:Electromagnetic force is crucial to the performance of the micro digital valve. The bigger electromagnetic force is needed to improve the rapidity of the micro digital valve. In the light of the traditional electromagnetic structure, which layouts the spring at the middle of the electromagnet, a new electromagnetic structure which sets the spring at the top of the electromagnet is studied. The relevant parameters and material are researched in the paper. The cross-sectional area of air gas and the electromagnetic force have a positive correlation relationship. The bigger driving current and the more turn of coil can increase the electromagnetic force in a certain range. The magnetic field would get the saturated state while driving current get a bigger value. At the moment, the magnetic force would not increase. Influence of magnetic material and non-magnetic material for valve seat is tiny. Electromagnetic force has a little difference between the two installation shells in the process of demagnetization. The simulation model is accurate and reliable. Using the simulation model, the electromagnetic cross section area, the different shell materials and the magnetic saturation phenomenon are simulated.

Abstract:This article investigates the air-gap field distribution of the permanent-magnet Vernier machine (PMVM) using a nonlinear exact conformal model (NECM) to account for slotting effect, flux modulation effect, and iron nonlinearity. The exact conformal model (ECM) based on the region of one-slot and one-flux-modulation-pole (OSECM) are introduced to show the effectiveness of the linear analytical model for PMVM. It can keep high calculation accuracy and significantly reduce the computational burden. Then, the NECM is developed from OSECM by introducing the equivalent saturation current into the air region and coil region. The lumped parameter magnetic circuit model (LPMCM) model is used to obtain the magnetic potential of the iron region and therefore calculate the equivalent saturation current. The NECM which combines LPMCM and OSECM can essentially improve the accuracy of the linear analytical model. The harmonic analysis of the air-gap field is performed to theoretically explain the component of electromagnetic torque. Both finite element model (FEM) simulation and test results are presented to validate the NECM.

Abstract:A new type of rotary electromagnetic actuator with permanent magnet ( PM) was designed. Based on the polarity characteristics of PM, a couple of coils in diagonal direction are designed. And a flux guide path is designed to optimize the magnetic circuit. The electromagnetic system and the contact system are designed seperately, which can achieve a high level maximum space utilization. In order to study the characteristic of PM, the PM is divided into several sub-sections. The migration analysis of the working point based on analytic model is carried on for the selection of PM, and the precise static characteristics of the actuator is analyzed by the finite element model. The prototype actuator was assembled and tested, and the advantages of fast conversion speed and high reliability were verified by the test.

Abstract:To increase the retaining force, a novel design for a concentric, bi-directional, electromagnetic valve actuator that contains double-layer permanent magnets is presented in this paper. To analyze the retaining-force change caused by the magnets, an equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) model is established, while the EMC circuit of a double-layer permanent-magnet valve actuator (DLMVA) is also designed. Based on a 3D finite element method (FEM), the calculation model is built for the optimization of the key DLMVA parameters, and the valve-actuator optimization results are adopted for the improvement of the DLMVA design. A prototype actuator is manufactured, and the corresponding test results show that the actuator satisfies the requirements of a high retaining force under a volume limitation; furthermore, the design of the permanent magnets in the DLMVA allow for the attainment of both a high initial output force and a retaining force of more than 100 N.

Abstract:The parameter design of electromagnetic devices which contain nonlinear permanent magnet (NPM) like AlNiCo and FeCrCo, often needs the calculation on magnetic force of thousands of times. It will cost a lot of time when using the finite element method (FEM). And the accuracy is limited when the magnetic equivalent circuit method (MEC) is used. In order to solve the problem, a distributed parameter calculation model (DPM) of NPM bars was established in this paper, and the solution procedure as well as the verification condition of this model was given. By a case study of the single NPM bar, the method of magnetic field lines division was adopted to build the permanent magnet DPM, solve the starting point and section magnetic flux of each subsection, make a comparison between FEM and test data, and verify the accuracy of this magnetic field line based the distributed parameter model in NPM bar calculation. This model proves to be of acceptable calculation accuracy and high calculation speed.

Abstract:The reliability of electromagnetic relay (EMR) which contains a permanent magnet (PM) can be improved by a robust design method. In this parameter design process, the calculation of electromagnetic system is very important. In analytical calculation, PM is often equivalent to a lumped parameter model of one magnetic resistance and one magnetic potential, but significant error is often caused; in order to increase the accuracy, a distributed parameter calculation model (DPM) of PM bar is established; solution procedure as well as verification condition of this model is given; by a case study of the single PM bar, magnetic field lines division method is adopted to build the DPM, the starting point and section magnetic flux of each segment are solved, a comparison is made with finite element method (FEM) and measured data; the accuracy of this magnetic field line based distributed parameter model (MFDPM) in PM bar is verified; this model is applied to the electromagnetic system of a certain type EMR, electromagnetic system calculation model is established based on MFDPM, and the static force is calculated under different rotation angles; compared with traditional lumped parameter model and FEM, it proves to be of acceptable calculation accuracy and high calculation speed which fit the requirement of robust design.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel permanent magnet (PM) actuator for low voltage controlled vacuum contactor is proposed. Magnetic field is analyzed using finite element method. The simulation being carried out couples the electrical circuit equation, mechanical equation and magnetic field. A prototype is manufactured and tested, which shows that the contactor equipped with the proposed PM actuator has good performance.

Abstract:Electromagnetic mini valves have attracted widespread interest recently. However, traditional ones usually have two working states and necessitate continuous energy input. To solve these issues, we developed a bistable electromagnetic compact valve (R9×44 mm) with four working states based on three-dimensional-printed moving magnets. For obtaining four working states, each moving magnet with a fixed-beam structure is actuated independently. To keep working without requiring energy, we present a magnetic-force-based bistable mechanism involving iron cores, moving magnets, and fixed magnets. Since the valve's closing and opening are kept by an intrinsic magnetic force between magnets, it requires an instantaneous current (0.008 s) to switch working modes. Furthermore, we added a 1 mm thick magnet to the moving magnet to enhance the valve's performance. Consequently, its pressure and flow rate dramatically rose from 1.0 to 30.0 kPa and 0.18 to 11.2 L/min, respectively. Its energy consumption and response time are 0.16 J and 0.008 s. Due to its four working states and bistable function, this research is demonstrated to reduce the number of valves and energy required in pneumatic systems. In the future, we will focus on its applications in invasive surgery equipment and bionic devices.

Abstract:Electromagnetic valve actuators have been widely used in industry, but the sleeve used for high pressure isolation leads to flux leakage and nonlinearity in performance. This paper proposes a new structure for a high pressure electromagnetic actuator using a single-piece sleeve and a permanent magnet (PM) shield. A finite element method analysis model is established for analyzing the magnetic field distribution and predicting the force characteristics. By improving the magnetic field distribution, the rare-earth PM shield approach increases the electromagnetic force. Two prototype actuators were designed and manufactured on the basis of the proposed models, and the experimental and simulation results agree well and show that the gain in force achieved by applying the PM shield increases along with the airgap and reaches a maximum of 44% at the maximum airgap of 0.8 mm. Therefore, the PM shield method is revealed to have great potential for increasing the performance of electromagnetic valve actuators.
A Rapid Magnetic Analysis and Dynamic Prediction Model for Permanent Magnet Contactor

Abstract:This paper proposed a rapid magnetic analysis and dynamic prediction model for the permanent magnet (PM) contactor. The model solves the coupled problem of mechanical motion and electromagnetic field excited by both PM and electric excitation. The structure and parameters of the PM contactor were described; an equivalent magnetic circuit model was established by the lumped parameter magnetic circuit method (MCM); and the motion equations for the coupled electric circuit model and mechanical model were derived. The results of electro-magnet force, based on a prototype of 75A PM contactor, were calculated by both the MCM and finite element method (FEM) in different displacement conditions, which showed that the relative error is less than 6.7%; and the complete simulation of the operation process of a PM contactor by the MCM takes less than 1% of the computer time required by FEM. Coil currents, displacements and velocities characteristics displayed during the making process were researched by simulation and experiments. Experimental results agreed well with those of simulation, and thus validated the effectiveness of the rapid magnetic analysis and dynamic prediction model.

Abstract:The permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) is featured with high-torque density due to the magnetic field modulation effect. At present, the analysis of the magnetic field characteristics and harmonic torque of PMVM is mainly derived from the perspective of permanent magnet (PM) field modulation. The research on armature magnetic field modulation is very limited. Therefore, this article studies the magnetic field modulation from the perspective of armature magnetic field, revealing the relationship between armature magnetic field and output torque. The process of armature magnetic field modulation and PM magnetic field modulation is compared and analyzed. It was found that in PM field modulation, the fundamental wave of PM magnetomotive force is modulated into different spatial harmonics with the same frequency; whereas in armature magnetic field modulation, the harmonics of different armature magnetomotive force are converted into temporal harmonics with identical frequency. Then, based on the perspective of armature magnetic field modulation, a new PMVM is proposed to improve torque. Compared with the existing uniform split teeth topology, the torque of the new PMVM is increased by 32%. Finally, a prototype of the machine has been manufactured and tested to verify its effectiveness.
Magnetic Field Modeling of A Linear Permanent Magnet Motor with Two Isolated Movers

Abstract:A novel permanent-magnet (PM) linear motor which composes of two isolated movers and one single stator is proposed in this paper. It is suitable for tasks requiring multiple drive motors. Each mover can produce independent force and flexible motions by interacting with the stator poles. Compared with conventional multi-motor driven system, it achieves more compact size, and thus increases the system force density. The design concept is presented. To facilitate fabrication and installation, the flat type PM linear motor with two isolated movers is proposed. The magnetic field model is formulated by using equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) method. The influence of magnetization pattern and back iron is included in the analysis. Numerical computation is carried out to verify the analytical model. Comparison shows that the analytical model and finite element analysis (FEA) result match well. The employment of same-magnetization pattern and back iron helps to improve the force output. The similar concept of multi-mover and single-stator can be implemented into other electromagnetic machines.
The Application of NdFeB in the Magnetic Force Actuator

Abstract:In this paper, NdFeB is used to design a new type of magnetic force actuator (MFA) with simple structure and high reliability. The permanent magnets are fixed on the static iron-core to generate a magnetic field, while the movable part locates within the magnetic field. It can drive the arc extinguishing unit powered by the Lorentz force, and this can be applied to the operation of the long-stroke high voltage circuit breaker (HVCB). At the open and closed position, the PMs generate holding force for the moving iron-core to keep the static state. Then, the finite element method(FEM) and prototype test are adopted to study the properties of PM and characteristics of the actuator. The simulation concludes that the material type and structure size of PM, end cap material and processing deviation of the actuator will impact the static characteristic of the actuator. The results of the test on prototype show that MFA using NdFeB can achieve the high power output, which is conductive for electronic control as well as the displacement tracking. Abstract:This paper presents the design method of a permanent-magnet (PM) actuator and an intelligent control module for the associated PM contactor. The original design parameters of the PM actuator are obtained using magnetic circuit method. The optimization model for the PM actuator is solved by genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm. A monostable cylindrical 140-A PM contactor is designed, and the corresponding intelligent control module of the actuator is developed. A dedicated control technique based on voltage feedback is proposed to realize the intelligent dynamic adjustment of the making process for the PM contactor. The electromagnetic force calculation model, the dynamic making model of the iron core and contact, the buffering model for the iron core, and the contact bounce model are all built using MATLAB. Experimental results are reported to showcase the correctness of the simulation method and the effectiveness of the feedback control technique to decrease the closing velocities of both the movable contact and the moving iron core that, in turn, will reduce the first and the second contact bounces significantly to lengthen the life span of the device.
