Abstract:Seeking the cost-effective, highly efficient functional materials with simple preparation procedures have always been a goal in the field of nuclides separation. Due to the effects of protonation and stability, the recovery of actinides like Th(IV) from molar concentrations of acidic solutions for most present materials still a challenge. Herein, we have combined the recently reported phenanthroline phosphonate (POPhen) ligands holding strong selective affinity for actinides in molar concentrations of HNO3 and the commonly used macroporous resin XAD7 to develop two novel POPhen ligands functionalized XAD-7 composites for the highly efficient removal of Th (IV) from molar concentrations of HNO3 solutions via a simple but effective method. The results of SEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, FT-IR, solid state 13C/31P NMR and XPS spectra studies confirmed that two phenanthroline phosphonates nBu-POPhen (n-butyl) and iBu-POPhen (isobutyl) were successfully loaded onto the pore structures of XAD-7 carrier through physical interactions. Both two adsorbents showed strong sorption ability, high selectivity and fast sorption rates for Th(IV) in 3-4 M HNO3 solutions. The sorption capacities of Th (IV) by nBu-POPhen/XAD-7 and iBu-POPhen/XAD-7 (around 25 % ligand loading) were 167.5 and 161.4 mg/g respectively at 298 K in 3.0 M HNO3. Dynamic adsorption-stripping experiments, TOC and radiation stability studies further validated the practical application potential of the as-synthesized adsorbents. The sorption mechanism of Th(IV) was deeply elucidated by EDS-STEM, AC-HAADF imaging, XPS survey spectra, EXAFS analysis and DFT theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The ionic imprinted polymer (IIP) of uranyl ion (UO 2 2+ ) as the template was synthesized by the formation of binary complexes of UO 2 2+ with 2,4-dioxopentan-3-yl methacrylate as functional monomer followed by thermal copolymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking monomer in the presence of 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator and 1,4-dioxane as porogenic solvent. 50 mmol L −1 HCl solution was used to leach out UO 2 2+ ions from the IIP. Similarly, the control polymer was prepared under identical experimental conditions without using UO 2 2+ ions. The above synthesized polymers were characterized by infra-red spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis and Barrett–Emmett–Teller surface area measurement. The maximum adsorption capacities of IIP and CP in (NH 4 ) 4 [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] solution were 15.3 and 11.2 mg U g −1 , respectively. The kinetics of adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order rate equation. The prepared IIP was successfully used to extract uranium from real seawater sample.

Abstract:Thorium has received much attention for potential application as nuclear fuel, but its capture at high acidity still requires more research. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been used to capture and separate various metal elements, but ionic liquid-containing composites have little been studied for thorium separation under high acidity conditions. A novel ionic liquid-foam composite (SIL-M) was prepared by loading stimuli-responsive ionic liquid (SIL) onto melamine foam (MF), and applied to separate thorium under high acid conditions. Under experimental conditions, SIL-M showed maximum adsorption capacity for thorium was 269 mg g −1 with an excellent selectivity for thorium over transition metals and lanthanide metals in 1 M HNO 3 ( S > 2 × 10 3 ). Studies revealed that PO was complexed with thorium, which also explained the high adsorption capacity and selectivity of SIL-M for thorium under high acidity within 4 cycles. Theoretical calculations were used to reveal that the reason why SIL can maintain high separation efficiency of thorium under high acidity conditions is due to the electrostatic potential of SIL is more positive. This study explored the possibility of using ionic liquid composite materials to capture thorium under strong HNO 3 media, and provided ideas for designing thorium capture materials under high acidity conditions.

Abstract:A new type of Zn2+ ion-imprinted polymer (Zn2+-IIP) was synthesized on the surface of attapulgite, displaying high affinity and selectivity to Zn2+. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) revealed Zn2+-IIP to be an organic-inorganic hybrid polymer, with Zn2+ imprinted cavities formed by CTS groups and connected to the surface of the attapulgite by A-187 cross-linked network. The adsorption kinetic investigation showed that the adsorption of Zn2+ on Zn2+-IIP was a pseudo-second-order process. The maximum adsorption capacities of Zn2+ were 0.536, 0.665, 0.715, and 0.722 meq/g at 288, 298, 308, and 318 K, respectively, where the activation energy, E-a, was evaluated as 23.8 kJ/mol. By thermodynamic study, Delta H degrees and Delta S degrees of the adsorption were determined as 30.862 kJ/mol and 108.664 J/mol K, respectively, while the negative Delta G degrees decreased with rising temperatures, indicating that the adsorption process was feasible and spontaneous. The adsorption selectivity of the Zn2+-IIP was also investigated via competitive adsorption of Zn2+, Cd2+, Cs+, Co2+, Ba2+, Sr2+, and Pb2+ from a mixture, demonstrating that Zn2+-IIP had the capability of recognizing Zn2+ with high affinity and selectivity. The study of multi adsorption-desorption cycles showed that the Zn2+-IIP can be reused many times without a significant decrease in the adsorption capacity.

Abstract:The recovery of thorium from aqueous industrial effluents is a challenge not only for environmental purpose but also for the valorization of secondary resources. The complexity of these effluents not only require designing highly efficient stable sorbent with highly reactive functional groups but also with good selectivity. Phosphonic groups are efficient for the binding of thorium. Successive grafting of phosphonic groups through one-pot reaction of vinylphosphonic acid with acrylamide-based reagents (as monomer and crosslinker) for polymerizing an efficient sorbent (HVP/NIP) toward Th(IV) recovery in slightly acidic solution. On the other hand, the selectivity objective was reached by adopting an ion-imprinting strategy (HVP/IP). While the templating weakly improves sorption capacity (at 1.46 mmol g- 1 at pH close to 3), the most significant benefits concern the uptake kinetics (slightly enhanced; equilibrium being reached in 20-25 min) and more significantly the separation properties of HVP/IP, against base metals and uranium (to a certain extent). The selectivity coefficient (i.e., SCTh/ metal) increases twice (against U and Ca) and up to 16-folds against Al, at pH0 3. Fourier-transform infrared and XPS spectroscopy confirm the structural differences for both sorbents (arrangement of reactive groups) and the interactions modes involved in thorium binding mechanisms. The remarkable sorption properties of HVP/IP are also illustrated by the good stability of the sorbent at recycling (loss in sorption less than 2% at the 10th cycle): complete desorption is achieved using 0.3 M HNO3 solution. The ion-imprinted sorbent is successfully applied to the recovery of valuable metals (thorium, uranium, and gallium) from acidic ore leachate at different pH values. The materials are fully characterized using different analytical tools; i.e., FTIR, TGA, XPS, BET, titration, and elemental analysis.

Abstract:Thorium has received widespread attention as a potential nuclear fuel alternative, but it is still a difficult task to extract thorium from strong HNO3 media. Meanwhile, stimulus-responsive materials have received extensive attention in the field of separation due to their special properties. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new type of stimulus responsive ionic liquid (SIL) material and applied it to solve the problem of low thorium extraction efficiency in strong HNO3 media. By utilizing the pH-response performance of SIL, a SIL and thorium complex (SILTh) is found to self-assemble and precipitate out from solution upon simple adjustment of the pH. We found that the extraction efficiency of thorium can reach 99.6% under high acidity and that it can be even higher than 98.8% when the temperature changes. Under experimental conditions, SIL showed a record-breaking maximum extraction capacity for thorium (644.2 mg g−1) with an excellent selectivity for thorium over lanthanide and transition metal in 1 M HNO3 (S>1400). Studies reveal that PO is complexed with thorium, which also explains the high adsorption capacity and selectivity of SIL for thorium under high acidity. Moreover, the pH-response characteristics of SIL are reversible. The pH-responsive SIL material and the extracted thorium can be recovered, and SIL also shows an excellent recycling ability over five cycles, with extraction and recovery efficiencies for Th(IV) of 98.0% and 98.7%, respectively within five cycles, indicating that the material has a good recycling ability. This study explores the possibility of using pH-responsive materials to recover thorium in strong HNO3 media, and provides ideas for the design and synthesis of new materials for the recovery of thorium.

Abstract:Cationic porous organic polymers have a unique advantage in removing radioactive iodine from the aqueous phase because iodine molecules exist mainly in the form of iodine-containing anions. However, halogen anions will inevitably be released into water during the ion-exchange process. Herein, we reported a novel and easy-to-construct zwitterionic hypercrosslinked polymer (7AIn-PiP)-containing cationic pyridinium-type group, uncharged pyridine-type group, pyrrole-type group, and even an electron-rich phenyl group, which in synergy effectively removed 94.2% (456 nm) of I2 from saturated I2 aqueous solution within 30 min, surpassing many reported iodine adsorbents. Moreover, an I2 adsorption efficiency of ~95% can still be achieved after three cyclic evaluations, indicating a good recycling performance. More importantly, a unique dual 1,3-dipole was obtained and characterized by 1H/13C NMR, HRMS, and FTIR, correlating with the structure of 7AIn-PiP. In addition, the analysis of adsorption kinetics and the characterization of I2@7AIn-PiP indicate that the multiple binding sites simultaneously contribute to the high affinity towards iodine species by both physisorption and chemisorption. Furthermore, an interesting phenomenon of inducing the formation of HIO2 in unsaturated I2 aqueous solution was discovered and explained. Overall, this work is of great significance for both material and radiation protection science.

Abstract:A novel self-crosslinking polymer-coated magnetic nanosorbent (Fe 3 O 4 @PAA) was prepared to remove thorium ions from aqueous solutions. The grafting-polymerization method was employed to graft polyamide acid (PAA) onto amino-activated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NH 2 ) via an amidation reaction using pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TA) as monomers. The adsorption results show that the adsorption process of Th(IV) by Fe 3 O 4 @PAA is significantly pH-sensitive, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity can reach 122.5 mg/g at pH 3.0. Furthermore, Fe 3 O 4 @PAA exhibits a high adsorption rate and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 60 min. After 5 cycles of reuse, the adsorption capacity was still retained at more than 80 % of the initial value. In addition, the extraction mechanism of Fe 3 O 4 @PAA for Th (IV) ions was analyzed in detail by FT-IR and XPS. This work provides valuable insights into the design and preparation of novel, acid-resistant, easily separable and fast magnetic separation adsorbents for the highly effective separation of Th () from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:This study introduces UiO-66-PO3, a novel functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) tailored for efficient thorium separation and enrichment from wastewater. UiO-66-PO3 was synthesized by amination reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and 2-carboxyethylphosphonic acid. Comprehensive characterization techniques confirmed its successful synthesis and revealed its unique properties. UiO-66-PO3 exhibited a remarkable theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 320.0 mg/g for Th(IV) under optimized conditions. Its exceptional hydrophilicity significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity compared to UiO-66-NH2. Furthermore, UiO-66-PO3 retained over 89% of its initial adsorption capacity for Th(IV) after five adsorption-desorption cycles, highlighting excellent regeneration capabilities. UiO-66-PO3 emerges as a promising adsorbent for thorium separation due to its high adsorption capacity, regeneration performance, and tunable properties.

Abstract:The present study explores the innocuous, biocompatible, and extremely competent molecularly imprinted chitosan/RTIL electrospun nanofibers having average diameter of 30 nm for the expulsion of thorium (IV) ions from the mimicked effluent waste. The extended Flory–Huggins theory and three-dimensional molecular modeling have been effectively premeditated via Materials Studio software for enumerating the inter-miscibility and compatibility (Chi parameter (χ) = 1.019, mixing energy (Emix) = 0.603 kcal/mol) of the chitosan/RTIL (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate). The maximum adsorption efficiency is found to be 90% at a neutral pH of 7, and a temperature of 298 K within 120 min. The adsorption process was extensively studied by two-parameter adsorption isotherms like Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) and three-parameter models like Redlich–Paterson and Sips isotherm. Pseudo-second-order kinetics model (R2 = 0.982) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.994) bestowed the best fitting on chitosan/RTIL nanofibers for the adsorption of Th (IV) ions. The thermodynamic study reveals the spontaneity and exothermic nature of the reaction. Abstract:In recent years, ion-imprinted polymers have gained significant attention and are extensively utilized owing to their high selectivity toward target ions. For this research, Pb(II) ions were used as the template ions, polyamide-amine dendrimers as the curing agent, epoxy resin as the carrier and combined with ion-imprinting technique in the preparation of Pb(II)-imprinted polymer (Pb(II)-IIP). Systematic adsorption experiments were used to investigate the impact of the adsorbent on the adsorption performance of Pb(II) ions. The composition of the adsorbent was further studied by FT-IR, SEM and other characterization techniques. The maximal adsorption capacity at pH = 5 and T = 318 K was calculated to be 138.8 mg/g. In the coexistence of multiple ions, the Pb(II)-IIP showed high selectivity for Pb(II) adsorption. Pb(II) was still removed at a rate of more than 91% after five cycles of experiments, indicating good reusability.

Abstract:Abstract The selective separation of thorium from rare earth elements and uranium is a critical part of the development and application of thorium nuclear energy in the future. To better understand the role of different N sites on the selective capture of Th(IV), we design an ionic COF named Py-TFImI-25 COF and its deionization analog named Py-TFIm-25 COF, both of which exhibit record-high separation factors ranging from 10 2 to 10 5 . Py-TFIm-25 COF exhibits a significantly higher Th(IV) uptake capacity and adsorption rate than Py-TFImI-25 COF, which also outperforms the majority of previously reported adsorbents. The selective capture of Py-TFImI-25 COF and Py-TFIm-25 COF on thorium is via Th-N coordination interaction. The prioritization of Th(IV) binding at different N sites and the mechanism of selective coordination are then investigated. This work provides an in-depth insight into the relationship between structure and performance, which can provide positive feedback on the design of novel adsorbents for this field.
Selective removal of aluminum ions from rare earth solutions by using ion-imprinted polymers

Abstract:Remove of trace Al3+ from rare earth solutions is a challenging task. In the present study, an aluminum ion imprinted polymer (Al (III)-IIP) has been fabricated by surface-imprinting method. Al (III)-IIP was obtained by grafting silica gel with aminopropyl triethoxysilane and acrylic acid (AA). The structure and morphology of the polymer were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The densification degree and the number of grafted functional groups were regulated by changing the synthesis conditions, and the optimal synthesis conditions are obtained as template ion: functional monomer: crosslinker = 1:8:8, and the optimal synthesis temperature is 333.15 K. The adsorption performance and selectivity properties of Al (III)-IIP were also investigated. The results show that at 298.15 K, the optimal pH for Al3+ adsorption is 4. The maximum adsorption capacity is 106.0 mg·g−1 at an Al3+ ion concentration of 1000 mg·L−1, which is 50% higher than that of reported recently. In addition, the adsorption process reaches equilibrium within 180 min. Furthermore, among many adsorption models and isothermal models, pseudo-second-order (PSO) adsorption model and Langmuir isothermal model are more suitable for the adsorption process. The selectivity coefficient of the Al3+ ion in binary mixtures of Nd3+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ are 17.76, 16.72 and 11.09, respectively. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of Al3+ is most probably caused by the formation of ionic bond between the Al3+ ions and the carboxyl functional groups on Al (III)-IIP and template effect. Results show that Al (III)-IIP has a great potential for a selective separation of aluminum ions from rare earth solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, a new La(III) ion-imprinted polymer La(III)-IIP was prepared by imprinting polymerization method, using methacrylic acid as the functional monomer and alkylated mesoporous silica as the carrier. La(III)-IIP was characterized by FTIR and SEM techniques. The material was also used to capture La 3+ in low concentration wastewater, and the structural morphology as well as the elemental composition of the material were characterized and analyzed. In addition, based on the characterization and experimental data, the adsorption type of La(III) and the possible adsorption mechanism of the material were further analyzed, and finally, the selective adsorption of lanthanum and the regeneration performance of the material were investigated.

Abstract:Thorium is an excellent alternative to uranium as a potential nuclear fuel due to the gradual depletion of uranium resources. Therefore, the separation and enrichment of thorium from tailing wastewater is of great significance. In this study, a novel adsorbent, UiO-66-NH-PMA, was prepared by grafting pyromellitic acid (PMA) onto UiO66-NH2 composite via a simple amination reaction for the separation and enrichment of thorium from aqueous solution. The presence of a significant number of -COOH functional groups on PMA provides an abundance of adsorption sites for thorium binding. Under acidic conditions (pH = 3.0), UiO-66-NH-PMA exhibited a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 168.38 mg/g. Moreover, the adsorbent reached adsorption equilibrium within 150 min. After five cycles of adsorption-elution experiments, UiO-66-NH-PMA retained 84.6 % of its firsttime thorium adsorption, demonstrating excellent regenerative performance. Additionally, the mechanism of UiO-66-NH-PMA complexed with Th(IV) was analyzed in detail by combining XPS, FT-IR, XRD and DFT calculation. This work demonstrates the high efficiency of carboxyl-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 for disposal of thorium-containing nuclear wastewater, and offers new insights into the mechanism of thorium adsorption on the adsorbents containing carboxyl groups.
A Novel Ion-Imprinted Membrane Induced by Amphiphilic Block Copolymer for Selective Separation of Pt(IV) from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:A novel ion-imprinted blend membrane was fabricated to separate selectively platinum(IV) from aqueous media. An amphiphilic copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PMMA-b-P4VP) was firstly synthesized via the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, and characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR and GPC. Subsequently, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blend membranes were prepared using PMMA-b-P4VP as a blending additive. Effects of the following factors on performance of blend membranes were systematically examined: P4VP content of PMMA-b-P4VP, solvent type, and PMMA-b-P4VP/PVDF ratio. Further, platinum(IV) ion-imprinted membrane (Pt(IV)-IIM) was fabricated by blending polymer-Pt(IV) complexes with PVDF. SEM, FTIR-ATR, contact angle, water flux and adsorption capacity were employed to characterize all membranes. Results indicated that the membrane, which was prepared using the copolymer with high P4VP content (polymerization time 10 h) as a functional polymer, N, N-dimethylacetamide as a solvent and PMMA-bP4VP/ PVDF ratio of 30 wt%, exhibited an intriguing morphology and much higher performance. Pt(IV)-IIM showed higher adsorption and selectivity for Pt(IV) (selectivity coefficients of 27.66 +/- 1.38 and 77.16 +/- 3.86 for Pt(IV)/Cu(II) and Pt(IV)/Ni(II), respectively) compared with a non-imprinted membrane. During membrane filtration, Pt(IV)-IIM was effective and selective for separation of Pt(IV) in the presence of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions. Also, Pt(IV)-IIM was chemical stable, and had a good regeneration performance.

Abstract:Replacing conventional solvents by ionic liquids is a promising route to greener nuclear fuel cycles. Here, we report a unique multi-functional task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) for the extraction and separation of trace thorium (Th). The phosphoramidate substituted butyl groups to imidazolium ionic liquid (PN-TSIL) shows superior extraction ability and selectivity (distribution rations of Th ~ 8302 and separation factor of Th to uranium (U) ~ 793 at 2 mol/L HNO3). For industial application purpose, an extraction chromatographic resin perpared by PN-TSIL (called PN-TSIL Resin) was made to develop a rapid, highly specific separation technique for simulative 229Th/233U separation process. Moreover, combination of spectroscopic investigations, quantum-mechanical calculations and thermodynamic parameters mearsurment, an unprecedented resolution picture of extraction process was delineated. The extraction ability and selectivity of thorium could be explained by the multiple binding sites though hybrid interactions (coordination and hydrogen bond) between thorium and PN-TSIL, leading to an entropy-driven extraction process. The understanding of solvent extraction mechanism in molecular scale will inspire new ways for TSIL design for nuclear fuel cycles.

Abstract:Selective extraction of low-concentration thorium (Th(IV)) from wastewater is a very important research topic. In this paper, amidoxime cellulose was synthesized, and its composition and structure were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XPS, and elemental analysis. The adsorption experiment results showed that the adsorption reaction was a spontaneous exothermic process. When the solid-liquid ratio was 0.12 g/L and the pH value was 3.5, the adsorption percentage of the Th(IV) in water onto amidoxime-functionalized cellulose (AO-CELL) could reach over 80%. The maximum adsorption capacity can reach to 450 mg/g. At the same time, the adsorption selectivity, desorption process and reusability of the material were also studied. The results showed that the AO-CELL had a good selectivity for Th(IV) in the system with Sr2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, and Co2+ as co-ions. In the nitric acid concentration of 0.06 mol/L system, the AO-CELL desorption rate of Th(IV) can reach 95%, and the adsorption rate of Th(IV) in aqueous solution of AO-CELL is still above 60% when the AO-CELL is reused four times. The above results show that the amidoxime cellulose adsorption material synthesized by our research group has good selective adsorption performance for Th(IV) of a low concentration in an aqueous solution and has a good practical application value.

Abstract:Efficient separation and enrichment of thorium from aqueous solutions is an important subject in the field of energy and ecological environment. In this study, a novel polymer-based xerogel was prepared by a crosslinking reaction of 2-carboxyethyl phosphonic acid functionalized chitosan(CCS-TCEP) and was applied to the adsorption of Th(IV) ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of CCS-TCEP could reach 311.6 mg/g with an excellent selectivity due to the abundant binding sites for thorium provided by TCEP. Moreover, this material has a high adsorption rate and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 60 min. After 5 cycles of reuse, the adsorption capacity of CCS-TCEP still retained more than 80 % of its initial value. Furthermore, the extraction mechanism of CCS-TCEP for Th(IV) ions was also analyzed in detail by FT-IR, XPS and DFT calculation. This study indicates that CCS-TCEP can be used as a potential adsorbent for efficient extraction of thorium from aqueous waste.

Abstract:Simple synthetic modulation based on thorium nitrate and tris((4-carboxyl)phenylduryl)amine (H 3 TCBPA) gives rise to a new thorium-based metal-organic framework, Th-TCBPA , which features excellent hydrolytic and thermal stabilities.
