Abstract:As an emerging optoelectronic material, graphene's universal absorption of about 2.3% over a broad frequency range from infrared to visible, as determined by its interband transition, presents both a new opportunity and a limitation. Here we report on a multifold enhancement of the absorption using a simple strategy, often referred to as the Salisbury screen. It consists of a graphene sheet on top of a SiO2 dielectric layer backed with a copper metallic reflector. For a monolayer graphene, peak absorptions of 9% at near normal incidence and 40% at near grazing angle are experimentally demonstrated in the near-infrared region, in good agreement with calculations using transfer matrix method. The resultant absorption enhancement suggests a great potential for graphene to be used in infrared optoelectronic components.

Abstract:As an emerging optoelectronic material, graphene has exhibited negligible absorption in the mid-infrared due to its Drude-like behavior of free electrons. For this reason, existing graphene-based Salisbury screens with enhanced graphene absorption have been limited to terahertz frequencies, and are experiencing difficulty to extend to higher frequency region. We propose to utilize graphene interband conductivity instead of the commonly used intraband conductivity to realize graphene-based Salisbury screens in the mid-infrared. Distinct mid-infrared absorption features in graphene-based Salisbury screens are investigated numerically and analytically by means of transfer matrix method. In contrast to terahertz absorption arising from intraband transition, the enhanced absorption of graphene in the mid-infrared is dominated by the interband transition. For a single layer of graphene on top of a metallic plane, peak absorptions of 10 % are obtained at normal incidence, and nearly perfect absorptions close to 1 are achieved at near grazing angle for incident s-polarization. To further enhance the perfect absorption over wider incident angles, a graphene-dielectric multilayer stack is proposed and analyzed. These results are relevant to graphene optoelectronics for mid-infrared applications.

Abstract: We demonstrate a graphene-based Salisbury screen consisting of a single layer of graphene placed in close proximity to a gold back reflector. The light absorption in the screen can be actively tuned by electrically gating the carrier density in the graphene layer with an ionic liquid/gel. The screen was designed to achieve maximum absorption at a target wavelength of 3.2 micrometer by using a 600 nm-thick, non-absorbing silica spacer layer. Spectroscopic reflectance measurements were performed in-situ as a function of gate bias. The changes in the reflectance spectra were analyzed using a Fresnel based transfer matrix model in which graphene was treated as an infinitesimally thin sheet with conductivity given by the Kubo formula. Temporal coupled mode theory was employed to analyze and intuitively understand the observed absorption changes in the Salisbury screen. We achieved ~ 6 % change in the optical absorption of graphene by tuning the applied gate bias from 0.8 V to 2.6 V, where 0.8 V corresponds to graphene's charge neutrality point.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a tunable terahertz metasurface Salisbury screen (MSS) based on graphene, which achieves adjustable broadband absorption through controlling the bias voltage applied on the graphene sheet. Combining conventional Salisbury screen (CSS) with specially optimized metasurface, the distributed Salisbury resonances can be excited in a continuous wide absorption bandwidth. Meanwhile, the graphene material is introduced to replace the ohmic sheet to manipulate the surface resistance. The simulated results show that the graphene-based MSS has a tunable absorption bandwidth from 0.68 THz to 1.62 THz, with the absorption rate controlled from 50% to about 90%.

Abstract:We demonstrate electrical control over coherent optical absorption in a graphene-based Salisbury screen consisting of a single layer of graphene placed in close proximity to a gold back reflector. The screen was designed to enhance light absorption at a target wavelength of 3.2 mu m by using a 600 nm-thick, nonabsorbing silica spacer layer. An ionic gel layer placed on top of the screen was used to electrically gate the charge density in the graphene layer. Spectroscopic reflectance measurements were performed in situ as a function of gate bias. The changes in the reflectance spectra were analyzed using a Fresnel based transfer matrix model in which graphene was treated as an infinitesimally thin sheet with a conductivity given by the Kubo formula. The analysis reveals that a careful choice of the ionic gel layer thickness can lead to optical absorption enhancements of up to 5.5 times for the Salisbury screen compared to a suspended sheet of graphene. In addition to these absorption enhancements, we demonstrate very large electrically induced changes in the optical absorption of graphene of similar to 3.3% per volt, the highest attained so far in a device that features an atomically thick active layer. This is attributable in part to the more effective gating achieved with the ion gel over the conventional dielectric back gates and partially by achieving a desirable coherent absorption effect linked to the presence of the thin ion gel that boosts the absorption by 40%.

Abstract:We demonstrate greatly enhanced light absorption by monolayer graphene over a broad spectral range, from visible to near infrared, based on the attenuated total reflection. In the experiment, graphene is sandwiched between two dielectric media referred as superstrate and substrate. Based on numerical calculation and experimental results, the closer the refractive indices of the superstrate and the substrate, the higher the absorption of graphene will be. The light absorption of monolayer graphene up to 42.7% is experimentally achieved.

Abstract:An angle-insensitive broadband absorber of graphene covering the whole visible spectrum is numerically demonstrated, which is resulted from multiple couplings of the electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the narrow metallic grooves. This is achieved by integrating the graphene sheet with a multi-grooved metasurface separated by a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) spacer, and an average absorption efficiency of 71.1% can be realized in the spectral range from 450 to 800 nm. The location of the absorption peak of graphene can be tuned by the groove depth, and the bandwidth of absorption can be flexibly controlled by tailoring both the number and the depth of the groove. In addition, broadband light absorption enhancement of graphene is robust to the variations of the structure parameters, and good absorption properties can be maintained even the incident angle is increased to 60°.

Abstract:Quarter-wavelength cavity, as a classical structure for preventing wave reflection, presents an effective way to enhance the interaction between light and material of ultrathin thickness. In this paper, we propose a method to control the bandwidth of graphene’s enhanced absorption in quarter-wavelength cavity. By varying the spacing distance between graphene and a metallic reflecting plane, which equals to an odd number of quarter-wavelengths, fundamental and higher order cavity modes are excited, whose fields couple to graphene with different spectral bandwidths, leading to bandwidth-controllable absorption in graphene. Absorption efficiencies of 9% and 40% are measured for graphene monolayer at 15° and 85° incident angles, respectively. Its absorption bandwidth varies between 52% and 10% of the central wavelength when the spacing distance between graphene and metallic reflecting plane increases from a quarter wavelength to seven quarter wavelengths. Our findings pave a way in engineering graphene for strong absorption with a controllable bandwidth, which has potential applications in tailoring spectral response of graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We theoretically study how to achieve an ultra-broadband near-infrared absorption enhancement of monolayer graphene through the multiple-resonator approach. The monolayer graphene (about 0.34 nm in thickness) is on nanostructured metal surfaces with multiple one-dimensional nanogrooves. The investigated nanostructure has an advantage of easy fabrication, because the monolayer graphene needs not to be sandwiched between different material layers. The metallic nanogrooves are able to support magnetic plasmon resonances whose resonance wavelengths are largely tuned, by changing the nanogroove depth from 70 to 210 nm or the nanogroove width from 20 to 40 nm. In a very wide near-infrared wavelength range from 850 nm to 1500 nm, the light absorption efficiency of graphene is enhanced to be more than 60 %, by carefully designing multiple magnetic plasmon resonances to be partly overlapped in optical spectra. Our work is of interest for some photoelectric devices, for example infrared photodetectors.

Abstract:We investigate the absorption enhancement of an unstructured graphene sheet in a broad frequency range from terahertz (THz) to mid-infrared regime. Ultra-multiband graphene absorption enhancement is observed by integrating graphene in a metal-dielectric-graphene (MDG) sandwich structure for polarized waves. Multiple order Fabry-Perot (FP) resonances are demonstrated to be responsible for the multiband absorption. Furthermore, perfect absorption is realized by introducing the MDG structure on a metal reflector to suppress the transmission channel. In addition, the absorption peaks can be easily tuned by changing the doping level of graphene. This work may have potential for improving the performance of graphene based optoelectrical devices and can be regarded as a demonstration of a tunable broadband near-perfect metamaterial absorber.

Abstract:We study theoretically how to simultaneously achieve narrowband and broadband light absorption enhancement of monolayer graphene, which is placed on a metallic substrate surface with a periodic array of small holes. By a couple model of double resonances, the narrowband and broadband absorption peaks of monolayer graphene are proven to stem from the hybrid modes of delocalized surface plasmon polartions propagating on the substrate surface and localized magnetic plasmons confined within individual holes. The positions, maxima, and bandwidths of the absorption peaks can be tuned conveniently through changing the hole array period. For an optimized period, the maximum absorption values at the narrowband and broadband peaks are able to reach up to 65% and 85%, respectively. The bandwidth of the narrowband absorption peak can be reduced to only several nanometers, and the bandwidth of the broadband absorption peak can be expanded to tens of nanometers. Our work will be helpful to design graphene-based photoelectric nanodevices whose optical responses are in the visible and near-infrared regions.

Abstract:Achieving ultra-broadband and completely modulated absorption enhancement of monolayer graphene in near-infrared region is practically important to design graphene-based optoelectronic devices, however, which remains a challenge. In this work, by spectrally designing multiple magnetic plasmon resonance modes in metamaterials to be adjacent to each other, near-infrared light absorption in monolayer graphene is greatly improved to have an averaged absorption efficiency exceeding 50% in a very broad absorption bandwidth of about 800 nm. Moreover, by exerting an external bias voltage on graphene to change Fermi energy of graphene, the ultra-broadband absorption enhancement of monolayer graphene exhibits an excellent tunability, which has a nearly 100% modulation depth and an electrical switching property. This work is promising for applications in near-infrared photodetectors, amplitude modulators of electromagnetic waves, etc.

Abstract:<p>Ultraviolet (UV) light trapping by monolayer graphene is of great significance in optoelectronic devices. In this work, to enhance the UV absorption of monolayer graphene, a metallic thin film-type/graphene/Bragg mirror optical structure is developed using transfer matrix methods. Our results showed that the absolute UV absorption of monolayer graphene can reach approximately 83 % at the wavelength of 270 nm, which is a 9.2-fold enhancement compared to the intrinsic value of free-standing graphene (9%). This high absorption is due to the strong field confinement of the Tamm state in the silica spacer layer. The UV absorption of graphene can be tuned by adjusting the nanostructure parameters and incident angles. Furthermore, the proposed structure is less affected by machining errors. Considering the influence of processing precision, the light absorption of graphene in this structure is higher than that in the microcavity of a photonic crystal. The results obtained in this study may find promising applications in high-performance UV–graphene optoelectronic devices, such as modulators and photodetectors, as well as in photocatalysis.</p>

Tailoring Total Absorption in a Graphene Monolayer Covered Subwavelength Multilayer Dielectric Grating Structure at Near-Infrared Frequencies

Abstract:We numerically demonstrate 100% light absorption at near-infrared frequencies via a subwavelength multilayer dielectric grating (SMDG) structure covered by a graphene monolayer. Without using plasmonic response, the total absorption is associated with critical coupling, which is enabled by the synergetic effect of the guided resonance and photonic bandgap of the system. Moreover, calculation results demonstrate that critical coupling can be tuned by varying the SMDG structural parameters or simply modulating the gate voltage on the graphene monolayer, as a result to flexibly control the absorption of the system. Furthermore, the enhanced resonance modes are not local, which can be longitudinally coupled deep into the SMDG, effectively facilitating the light–matter interaction. This control over total absorption offered by our design may hold potential in engineering many ultra-compact and high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Bandwidth-tunable light absorption enhancement in monolayer graphene is practically important for graphenebased photoelectric devices. Especially, it is still a huge challenge to achieve high-efficiency graphene absorption with extremely narrow sub-nanometer bandwidth much smaller than one nanometer. In this work, both broadband and narrowband absorption peaks of monolayer graphene are numerically achieved in visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges. The broadband absorption peak is ascribed to localized dipolar plasmon resonances in individual silver nanodisks, and the narrowband absorption peak arises from collective first-order diffraction coupling effect in periodic array of silver nanodisks. By changing the array period, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the broadband absorption peak can vary from 100 nm to 50 nm. Correspondingly, the FWHM of the narrowband absorption peak is tuned from about 6.4 nm to only 0.25 nm, thus realizing an ultra-narrow sub-nanometer bandwidth.
Transparent Microwave Absorber Based on Single Layer Graphene Film

Abstract:High quality single layer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method has sheet impedance ranging from 300 ohm to 600 ohm. We demonstrate that it can be used as an absorbing film in Salisbury absorber. An efficient and accurate transmission line model is proposed for such transparent graphene film absorber at 38.5 GHz. Result of transmission line model is in good agreement with that of the 3D full-wave simulation. Finally, the sample of the graphene absorber is fabricated, and an easy-to-use testing method based on pyramidal horn antenna is proposed to characterize the absorbing property of the absorber sample.

Abstract:Graphene-based terahertz (THz) devices, such as modulators, detectors, and absorbers, play important roles in terahertz applications due to graphene’s effectively tunable terahertz absorption. The features of these terahertz devices are greatly related to the THz absorption of graphene. However, the monolayer graphene shows limited absorption to terahertz waves. In this paper, we demonstrated a new graphene composite with a double circular metal ring array deposited on graphene to enhance the absorption. The graphene composite consists of a double circular metal ring array, a monolayer graphene, silicon dioxide, and silicon substrates. The double circular metal ring array locally enhances the electromagnetic field on graphene and further increases graphene’s absorption. It shows that the peak absorption of the proposed graphene composite is increased to 95% for graphene Fermi level 0 eV at room temperature, which is more than seven times larger than that of the graphene composite without the double circular metal ring array. The enhanced terahertz absorption of the proposed graphene composite shows the potential ability of improving modulation depth and insertion loss of a THz reflection modulator.
