Abstract:In this paper, an index-based parallel scheduler for optical burst switching (OBS) networks, which can find feasible voids on different channels in parallel with O(1) time complexity, achieve the highest possible efficiency, and is suitable for efficient hardware implementation, is proposed. The channel scheduler proposed consists of two phases: searching the feasible voids on all data channels and selecting optimal void among feasible voids found. In the first phase, an index vector of voids for each channel is constructed by dividing the scheduling time window of the channel into N slots, and an index-based searching approach is applied in parallel to each channel to find the feasible voids by a few simple index based bit operations and once memory reading and comparing operations. A configurable optimal void selection approach, which selects optimal void according to the external configurable signal by using a configurable comparand translator and a general selection process, is designed to supported different scheduling algorithms such as LAUC-VF, Min-SV, Max-EV, and Best-Fit with full efficiency. Formulae for important design parameters are given. The hardware architecture of the index based parallel scheduler is designed, and a 16-channel scheduler with the full resource utilization of LAUC-VF is implemented in FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) with a scheduling time of 33.3 ns per burst request. The support to different scheduling algorithms is also validated experimentally.

Abstract:In this paper, a Max-CU-VF (Maximum Channel Utilization with Void Filling) channel scheduling algorithm for OBS (Optical Burst Switching) is proposed, which chooses the feasible data channel with the maximum channel utilization as the optimal one. The channel utilization defined in Max-CU-VF is the total length of scheduled BDPs (Burst Data Packet) on a data channel in a limited observing time window. The scheduling time can be decreased due to the elimination of time consumed in searching procedure in comparison with the traditional schedulers based on LAUC-VF (Latest Available Unused Channel with Void Filling). The hardware processing scheme and the corresponding hardware architecture for Max-CU-VF are designed in detail. A 16-channel Max-CU-VF based scheduler is demonstrated on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). A scheduling time of 12.5 ns per BCP (Burst Control Packet) is achieved on the real-time running Max-CU-VF based scheduler. The performance of the Max-CU-VF is also compared with LAUC-VF through NS2 simulation. The results show that the burst loss ratio and the average throughput of Max-CU-VF are close to those of LAUC-VF when the load is light, and the faster Max-CU-VF outperforms the slower LAUC-VF very much when the arrival rate of bursts is over the processing speed of LAUC-VF. Therefore, Max-CU-VF is more suitable for future high speed OBS networks.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is more efficient and feasible solution to build terabit IP-over-WDM optical network by employing relatively matured photonic and opto-electronic devices and combining the advantage of high bandwidth of optical transmission/switching and high flexibility of electronic control/processing. Channel scheduling algorithm is one of the key issues related to OBS networks. In this paper, a class-based scheduling algorithm is presented with emphasis on fairly utilizing the bandwidth among different services. A maximum reserved channel numbers and a maximum channel search times is introduced for each service based on its class of services, load and available bandwidth resource in the class-based scheduling algorithm. The performance of the scheduling algorithm is studied in detail by simulation. The results show that the scheduling algorithm can allocate the bandwidth more fairly among different services and the total burst loss ratio under high throughput can be lowered with acceptable expense on delay performance of services with lower delay requirement. Problems related with burst loss ratio and the delay requirement of different services can be well solved simultaneously.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high-speed, flexible, and transparent technology. It is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty IP traffic over optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. OBS technology facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. It provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, there are still a lot of challenges, one of which is burst contention. Owing to the fact that random access memory like buffering is not available in the optical domain at present, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Many contention resolutions are proposed. The major contention resolutions in literature are wavelength conversion, fiber delay lines, and deflecting routing. In this paper, a new data burst scheduling scheme, called group scheduling based on control-packet batch processing (GSCBP) was proposed to reduce burst contention. Like transmission control protocol, GSCBP has a batch processing window. Control packets which located in the batch processing window are batch processed. A heuristic scheduling algorithm arranges the relevant bursts' route based on the processing result and the network resource. A new node architecture supporting group scheduling was presented. The GSCBP algorithm is combined with wavelength converter and/or fiber delay lines which is shared by some data channels. Meanwhile, an extended open shortest path first (E-OSPF) routing strategy was proposed for OBS. Both GSCBP and E-OSPF are introduced into 14-node national science foundation network by means of simulations. The ETE delay, burst blocking probability, as well as burst dropping probability were attained. Results show that the GSBCP lead to the higher-priority traffic drop rate decrease one order of magnitude, if drop rate and ETE delay of lower priority traffic is sacrificed.
Multiple BHPs Delayed Scheduling Algorithm in Optical Burst Switching Network

Abstract:Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is considered as one of core technologies for next generation optical switching networks. In OBS network, the scheduling algorithm for core router is important for the performance of switching network. And how to schedule bursts efficiently and reduce the lost probability of bursts are the key issue. This paper proposes a new multiple BHPs (Burst Header Packets) delayed scheduling algorithm. With this algorithm, data bursts of all BHPs collected in one collection period are scheduled collectively to a policy. And resources has been arranged before for the former BHP can be altered and rearranged by the latter one, and the scheduling result is optimized. In the light of different network application, this algorithm is divided into four realities. Through simulation and comparing the results with now existing algorithms, it is showed that the algorithm can optimize the scheduling of bursts, improve the channel utilization and decrease the loss possibility of bursts.

Abstract:Serializing bursts at the ingress node is an effective method to reduce burst loss in OBS networks. One of the key issues in the scheduling scheme is home channel assignment. In this letter, serialized burst traffic load (SBTL) is defined to evaluate the burst serializing degree according to the traffic tree model. A home channel assignment algorithm based on the optimization of total SBTL is proposed. Simulation is performed to verify the efficiency of the burst scheduling scheme for the proposed algorithm. The results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that obtained by greedy algorithm.

Abstract:A new scheduling algorithm, which aims to provide proportional and controllable QoS (Quality of Service) in terms of burst loss probability for OBS (Optical Burst Switching) networks, is proposed on the basis of a survey of QoS schemes in current OBS networks. With simulations, performance analysis and comparisons are carried out in detail. The results show that, in the proposed scheme, burst loss probabilities are proportional to the given factors and the control of QoS performance can be achieved with better performance. This scheme will be beneficial to the OBS network management and the tariff policy making.

Abstract:In OBS networks, the data channel scheduling is one of key problems. On the base of the research on traditional scheduling algorithm, the priority-based burst rescheduling with void filling(PBR-VF) algorithm is proposed in this paper.It takes the LAUC-VF Plus algorithm as the sub-algorithm and combines the rescheduling and selective burst dropping strategy. The simulation result shows that, the proposed algorithm can provide better channel resource efficiency and the QoS requirement of optical burst switching networks.

Abstract:The paper proposes a new scheduling algorithm for core routers to support QoS in optical burst switching networks. In the proposed algorithm, which is named waiting-queuing-scheduling, all BHPs (burst header packets) are deliberately delayed a properly-designed time, and added to input queues with a policy. All BHPs are scheduled in a batch when the waiting period times out. Using one of the currently well-known scheduling algorithm as its sub-algorithm, the proposed scheme is rather simple and feasible, and can yield a good performance. The simulation results show that the burst loss probabilities of higher classes can be decreased greatly, while not introducing much end-to-end delay. In addition, with proper waiting time, the average loss probability can also be decreased.

Abstract:The separated management and operation of commercial IP/optical multilayer networks makes network operators look for a unified control plane (UCP) to reduce their capital and operational expenditure. Software-defined networking (SDN) provides a central control plane with a programmable mechanism, regarded as a promising UCP for future optical networks. The general control and scheduling mechanism in SDN-based optical burst switching (OBS) networks is insufficient so the controller has to process a large number of messages per second, resulting in low network resource utilization. In view of this, this paper presents the burst-flow scheduling mechanism (BFSM) with a proposed scheduling algorithm considering channel usage. The simulation results show that, compared with the general control and scheduling mechanism, BFSM provides higher resource utilization and controller performance for the SDN-based OBS network in terms of burst loss rate, the number of messages to which the controller responds, and the average latency of the controller to process a message.

Abstract:An experiment of 4-port and 8-wavelength optical burst switching(OBS) network is designed.The experimental system includes one core switching node,four edge nodes and dense wavelength divide multiplexing(DWDM) transmission systems.In transmission systems,burst packets(BPs) over burst packets optical wavelength channels choose 1 550 nm band,and burst header packet(BHPs) over control optical wavelength channel use 1 310 nm band.At OBS core switching node,a switching matrix is made from eight 4×4 optical switches.At the same time,the fiber delay line(FDL) buffers are applied to the core node to solve the traffic congestion of the OBS network.The experimental results prove that the design is successful,and the FDL can help reduce to the packets-loss-ratio of the core node.

Abstract:Compared to the Wavelength Routing (WR) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS) networks, Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is believed to be a more attractive technical solution for future Internet infrastructure. One of the issues of design of OBS switches is how to keep the implementation cost low while maintain high performance. A novel design of photonic switch for OBS networks is proposed, which is called PM×1×P structure. The Internal Blocking can be effectively avoided in this structure, hence much higher throughput of data burst can be achieved. On the other hand, the proposed design uses less optical elements in terms of optical switching elements, multiplexers and couplers. It turns out to be a more cost-saving design than other photonic switches with similar throughput performance. Results of extensive simulations are presented, and the performance of proposed design is proved.

Abstract:As a promising solution for the next generation optical Internet, optical burst switching still has much to be improved, especially on the design of core routers. This paper mainly focuses on the channel scheduling algorithms of core routers and proposes a new scheduling algorithm. The new scheduling algorithm integrates burst segmentation, one of contention resolution schemes that are another major concern in the core router design. The simulation results show that the new algorithm, compared to existing scheduling algorithms, can effectively lower the packet loss probability and is of great benefit to the network performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a design of optical fiber transmission system of 4-port and 8-wavelength opticalburst switching network is described. A novel scheme of wavelength channels is mentioned, and it is fit for OBS network and reducing difficulty and cost of the network. Burst mode transmitter and receiver are designed for OBS. At 1.25 Gbps bit rate transporting packets, output optical power of transmitter is more than -2 dBm, input optical power of receiver is less than -23 dBm, dynamic range is more than 15 dB, burst synchronization is less than 6 μs, and guard band between packets is 6 μs.

Abstract:Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as a new paradigm to achieving a practical balance between Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Hybrid Optical Networks (HON) that combines OCS and OBS has emerged to grant the OBS network the ability to support connection-oriented applications. Although efficient in terms of reducing the burst loss probability as well as improving the overall network performance, it provides a limited degree of Quality of Service (QoS). What we mean by QoS is the capability of a network to provide a guaranteed level of availability while satisfying strict limits on delay. In this paper, we propose new hybrid architecture for OBS networks. The proposed architecture qualifies the OBS network to support different classes of QoS.

Abstract:In Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks, the requirements on packet loss probability vary for different class users. In order to meet different packet loss probability demands, besides the traditional methods to support Differentiated services (DiffServ) by resource allocation and contention resolution, the scheduling of control packets should also support DiffServ. A new type of scheduling strategy, Priority-based Weight Fair Queuing (PWFQ) scheduling strategy, is proposed. An equivalent analysis model is also presented to simplify the solving process of scheduling weight of each class. We also define a parameter, normalized deviation factor, to evaluate the validity of our analysis model as well as the fairness of scheduling strategy on supporting DiffServ. Numerical results confirm that, it is feasible to analyze queue system, in which PWFQ scheduling strategy is adopted, with our equivalent model. At the same time, it confirms that our scheduling strategy performs well on providing fair DiffServ in terms of packet loss probability.

Abstract:The first optical burst switching (OBS) system has been demonstrated in China, which includes three edge routers and one core-node. A kind of fast wavelength selective optical switching was used in the system. The core OBS node consists of a kind of wavelength selective optical switch we developed. It consists of two SOA switches and one wavelength selective thin film filter with centre wavelength at one wavelength. There are one input optical fiber and two output fibers, each fiber carries two wavelengths. The Dell PE2650 servers act as the edge OBS routers, The wavelength of each data channel is located in C-band and the bit rate is at 1.25Gbps, The control channel uses bit rate of 100Mbps at wavelength of 1310 nm. A novel effective scheme for Just-In-Time (JIT) protocol was proposed and implemented. OBS services, such as Video on Demand (VOD) and file transfer protocol (FTP), have been demonstrated. Assembling and scheduling methods that are capable to guarantee the QoS (quality of service) of the transported service are studied.

Abstract:Burst contention resolution is one of the most important issues in optical burst switching (OBS) networks. In this paper, an O/E/O conversion and electronic storage mechanism for contention resolution is proposed. Compared with fiber delay lines (FDL) O/E/O strategy can provide much longer and continuous delay time for the contending bursts, which can significantly reduce burst loss rate. For this mechanism, a new burst scheduling algorithm called Shortest Delay- Best Fit (SD-BF) is proposed here to improve bandwidth utilization. In a network, O/E/O can be implemented with FDL to achieve a better performance while reducing node cost. In this paper, a semi-share structure for this combination strategy is proposed to balance the cost and performance. Numerical results show that a better performance is achieved by the combination strategy in the long haul back-bone networks. We also investigate the maximum electronic RAM capacity needed in the nodes to support O/E/O storage, and how to implement Quality-of-Service (QoS) with O/E/O storage.
