Abstract:A new nanocomposite catalyst consisting of high loading cobalt oxide (CoO) on nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was prepared in this work Its high activity for the ORR in alkaline electrolyte was determined using the rotating disk electrode technique, and further confirmed in real alkaline membrane fuel cells. A combination of physicochemical characterization (e.g., X-ray absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectra) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggests that cobalt(II) cations in the composite catalyst may coordinate with the pyridinic nitrogen atoms doped into graphene planes, most likely the active species for the ORR Especially, the DFT calculations indicate that a stable rGO(N)-Co(II)-O-Co(II)-rGO(N) structure can be formed in the nitrogen-doped graphene catalist. Kinetic parameter analysis shows a high selectivity of four electron reduction on the composite catalyst during the ORR with an average electron transfer number of 3.75. A synergistic effect between the rGO(N) and CoO may exist, yielding a much higher catalytic activity on the CoO/rGO(N) catalyst, compared to either rGO(N) or CoO controls. The novel synthesis procedure utilizing rGO(N) to further couple Co(II) yields a high loading of Co species (24.7 wt %). Thus, a relatively thinner cathode in fuel cell can accommodate more active Co species and facilitate O-2 transfer. Due to the high intrinsic activity and efficient mass transport, the CoO-rGO(N) ORR catalyst achieved approaching performance to state-of-the-art Pt/C cathodes in anion-exchange-membrane alkaline fuel cells.
Cobalt-based N-doped Bamboo-Like Graphene Tubes with Enhanced Durability for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell

Abstract:Exploring efficient non-precious metal cathode catalysts is attracting ever-increasing interest in the development of direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC). Herein, a cobalt-based nitrogen-doped bamboo-like graphene tube (Co-NGT) is prepared as an efficient cathode catalyst. The Co-NGT consists of bamboo-like graphene tubes (40-130 nm in diameter and similar to 10 mu m in length), as well as cobalt nanoparticles (50-100 nm in diameter) confined in the graphene tubes. The Co-NGT shows an onset reduction potential of 0.964 V and an almost four-electron pathway towards oxygen reduction reaction, as well as a negative shift of 8 mV in half-wave potential after 10,000 CV cycles. The Tafel slope of the Co-NGT catalyst is 47 mV decade(-1), which is by ca. 37.8 mV decade(-1) smaller than for Pt/C. A DBFC using the Co-NGT cathode yields the biggest power density of 453 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C and a life span of over 120 h. The excellent electrocatalytic properties and superior durability of Co-NGT catalyst arise from the highly graphitized NGT, providing strong interaction with Co nanoparticles and mitigating the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles. Our study guides for composition and structural design of high-efficient cathode catalysts of DBFC.
Highly Active Cofe Alloy Nanoparticlesencapsulated in N-Doped Carbon Nanostructures for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Both Alkaline and Acidic Media

Abstract:We report our facile and efficient approach for synthesizing Co-Fe alloy based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, in which alloy nanoparticles are encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures. The catalysts with high hierarchical porosities are fabricated at an appropriate temperature of 775 degrees C without a further acid leaching treatment after pyrolysis due to the use of ZnO nanoparticles as auto -removable templates. Co/Fe atomic ratio is found to greatly influence the ORR catalytic activity. The catalyst with Co/Fe = 1 exhibits the best catalytic performance by showing an ORR onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.87 V (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, as well as 0.98 V and 0.83 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4, better than or approaching the performance presented by a commercial 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. The Zn-air battery using the synthesized CoFe@N-C catalyst delivers a higher power density at ambient conditions by air-breathing than the one using the 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Relatively higher atomic concentrations of both Fe and Co as well as more graphitic nitrogen in the surface of CoFe@N-C detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) may account for its excellent ORR catalytic activities both in alkaline and acidic en-vironments.

Abstract:Development of reactive and stable non-preciously metallic catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction is a fascinating research field for fuel cells. Herein, a hybrid electrocatalyst consisted of hollow CoO nanoparticles embedded in N-doped mesoporous graphene (CoO@N-G) has been successfully prepared via carbonizing the precursor which is prepared from graphene oxide and N, N '-Bis(salicylidene) ethylenediamine cobalt salt in the presence of hydrazine hydrate. The formation of hollow CoO nanoparticles is generally attributed to the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. The effective synergistic effect of hollow CoO nanoparticles and N-doped mesoporous graphene is helpful to obtain excellent electrocatalytic activity with four-electron selectivity, long-term stability and good anti-methanol.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed transition metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts are emerging as low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. However, a cost-effective and scalable synthesis strategy for these catalysts is still required, as well as a greater understanding of their mechanisms. Herein, iron, nitrogen co-doped carbon spheres (Fe@NCS) have been prepared via hydrothermal carbonization and high-temperature post carbonization. It is determined that FeN4 is the main form of iron existing in the obtained Fe@NCS. Two different precursors containing Fe2+ and Fe3+ are compared. Both chemical and structural differences have been observed in catalysts starting from Fe2+ and Fe3+ precursors. Fe2+@NCS-A (starting with Fe2+ precursor) shows better catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. This catalyst is studied in an anion exchange membrane fuel cell. The high open-circuit voltage demonstrates the potential approach for developing high-performance, low-cost fuel cell catalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis and self-assembly of core/shell Co/CoO nanoparticles (NPs) onto the surface of graphene (G) as a catalyst for electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen in alkaline media. The Co NPs are first synthesized and then oxidized in a controlled environment to add a Cobalt oxide shell, forming core/shell Co/CoO NPs with shell thickness tunable from 1-3 nm. Compared to G, and to carbon supported Co/CoO (C-Co/CoO) NPs, the G-Co/CoO NPs show enhanced catalytic activity in O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution. Fabrication of monodisperse ten nm particles with a 1 nm thick oxide shell on graphene exhibited activity comparable to, and stability better than, a commercial C-Pt NP catalyst. The nanoparticle composite is thus a promising candidate for high performance inexpensive fuel cells and batteries using an oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solutions.

Abstract:Nanoporous nitrogen doped carbon was used to modify the surfaces of graphene sheets by carbonizing a mixture of graphene oxide and phenol-melamine-formaldehyde (PMF) pre-polymer in the presence of a soft template (F127). The resulting graphene based composite sheets (G-PMFs) have a sandwich structure with one graphene layer and two nanoporous nitrogen-doped carbon layers. G-PMFs have large specific surface areas of 190 to 630 m(2) g(-1) and exhibited high electrocatalytic activity, good durability and high selectivity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The performance of the Zn-air fuel cell with a G-PMF anode was tested and found to be comparable to that of the Zn-air cell with a commercial Pt/C anode. Thus, these metal-free catalysts are promising for applications in practical fuel cells.

Abstract:Preparing a cost‐effective, active, stable, non‐precious catalyst, especially at the cathode, is one of the basic requirements for the commercialization of fuel cells (FCs). In this study, cobalt nanoparticles composite with titanium nitride (TiN) were prepared on the surface of reduced graphene oxide, using a facile hydrothermal method, followed by heat treatment under an inert atmosphere. The surface morphology, surface composition, and crystalline structure are investigated with the use of field emission‐scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction, respectively. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is examined in sulfuric acid (0.5 M H2SO4), under nitrogen and oxygen bubbling. Results showed that there is an optimum ratio of the Co and the TiN that maximizes the ORR activity. A high onset potential of 0.926 V vs Ag/AgCl is obtained in the case of CoTiN (30)/Gr. This is much higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.576 V vs Ag/AgCl). The prepared catalyst has no activity towards methanol oxidation, unlike the Pt/C catalyst. Thus, it considered a promising cathode catalyst for direct alcoholic FCs. Furthermore, the composite catalyst has a high stability, with no activity degradation occurring even after 1000 cycles. This is extremely effective compared to the 20% loss of Pt/C activity under the same operating conditions. The high performance of the prepared catalyst is related to the synergetic effect between the TiN and the Cobalt.

Abstract:Although Co and N codoped carbon (Co-N-C) materials could be served as the promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts, they still suffer from unsatisfactory catalytic activity, especially in acidic environment. Herein, we report that the construction of Co nanoparticles embedded within highly porous, atomically-dispersed Co-N-C nanofibers catalyst not only significantly improves the ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.778 V/RHE, but also achieves the remarkable durability with only ~ 9 mV decay of E1/2 after a 10000-cycle accelerated durability test between 0.6 and 1.1 V. Both aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope and X-ray adsorption spectroscopy confirm the existence of Co single atoms in the carbon nanofibers. Density functional theoretical calculation reveals that the introduction of Co core nanoparticle lowers the d band center of surface Co atoms in graphite shells and makes the free energy diagrams of the ORR process on Co-N-C shell more close to the ideal case, thus boosting the catalytic performance. Proton exchange membrane fuel cell integrated with as-prepared catalyst delivers a peak power density of 0.42 W cm−2 together with excellent stability after 100 h operation. This study provides an ideal perspective to develop highly efficient and durable Co-based catalyst for the oxygen reduction.

Abstract:Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of key renewable-energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high activity at low cost remains a great challenge. Here, we report a hybrid material consisting of Co3O4 nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide as a high-performance bi-functional catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although Co3O4 or graphene oxide alone has little catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen doping of graphene. The Co3O4/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active for OER, making it a high-performance non-precious metal-based bi-catalyst for both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic chemical coupling effects between Co3O4 and graphene.

Abstract:Fuel cells have emerged as a charming candidate for next-generation energy conversion devices. However, it is highly desired but challenging to engineer advanced non-precious oxygen reduction catalysts with highly actives and stability due to the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on fuel cell cathode. Herein, a novel hybrid architecture with Co nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes and hollow nanocarbon polyhedron (Co@N-CNT-HC) was constructed from core-shell ZIF-67@ZIF-8 via a facile epitaxial growth-pyrolysis process. With the Co@N-CNT-HC as the catalyst, a remarkable ORR performance is achieved in terms of a high half-wave potential of 0.84 V, a large limiting current density of 4.70 mA/cm2, and excellent long-term durability ( 97.8% current retention after 8 h) in alkaline medium, which outperform commercial Pt/C catalyst. Further dynamic calculations indicated that ORR follows a four-electron reaction mechanism. The enhancement activity of Co@N-CNT-HC is mainly due to the effective integration of 0D Co nanoparticles, 1D carbon nanotubes and 3D hollow nanocarbon, which synergistically strengthen the interfacial reaction kinetics of oxygen and accelerate mass/charge transfer. The strategy reported in this work provides a new insight to synthesis of low-cost and well-designed carbon hybrid electrocatalyst for ORR.

Abstract:An oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst with high performance, low cost and good durability is extremely desirable for promoting the commercial application of fuel cells. Much efforts have been made to explore efficient and nonprecious catalysts to replace the platinum-based catalyst. Particularly, cobalt oxide (Co3O4 or CoO) decorated carbon materials has been demonstrated as promising ORR electrocatalysts. In this paper, we report a kind of tiny hollow nano-Co3O4 anchored 3D graphene aerogels (3DG) in the first time, which derived from direct oxidation carbon wrapped Co/3DG through Kirkendall effect. Due to its unique structure, the hollow Co3O4/3DG shows excellent ORR catalytic activity with almost four-electron reduction pathway, high methanol tolerance and long-term durability in alkaline media.

Abstract:A low cost, durable, and efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is essential for high-performance fuel cells. Here, we fabricated Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on N-doped mesoporous carbon nanofibers (Co3O4/NMCF) by electrospinning combined with the simple heat treatment. Within this composite, carbon nanofibers possess a mesoporous structure, contributed to obtain a high surface area, which can facilitate the infiltration of electrolyte. Moreover, this one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanofiber also acts as a 1D conductive channel, effectively improving the transmission of electrons. In addition, the doping of the N element with high content combined with homogenously distributed Co3O4 NPs can significantly enhance the ORR electrocatalytic activity. Benefiting from the advantages of material and structure, the Co3O4/NMCF catalyst favors a four electron transfer process in alkaline media, exhibiting good ORR electrocatalytic activity, and its durability is much better than that of commercial Pt/C.

Highly Durable Fuel Cell Electrocatalyst with Low-Loading Pt-Co Nanoparticles Dispersed Over Single-Atom Pt-Co-N-Graphene Nanofiber

Abstract:The limited durability of Pt electrocatalysis toward cathodic oxygen reduction reaction remains challenging, yet crucial for the development of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell. Here, we present a rational design of a robust catalyst consisting of PtCo nanoparticles supported over porous Pt-Co-Nitrogen-Graphene nanofiber. The approach uses polymer-fiber containing Polyacrylonitrile and Cobalt-Metal-Organic-Framework as precursor. In a fuel cell with total Pt loading (anode + cathode) of 0.083 mgPt·cm-2, the catalyst delivers unprecedented mass activity of 2.48 A·mgPt-1 at 0.9 ViR-free initially. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopies combined with Density Functional Theory unveil that the synergistic effect of Pt-Co dual-center facilitates the oxygen-intermediates-adsorption strengthened on Co moieties and weakened on Pt sites; the specific structure of the substrate lowers the reaction thermodynamic barrier favoring the formation of H2O rather than H2O2 over Co-N 4 and enables a strong adhesion of PtCo to Pt-Co-Nitrogen-Graphene, enhancing durability of the catalyst that underwent 60,000 Accelerated-Stress-Test cycles with no obvious structure and composition changes.

Abstract:The design of metal nitrogen carbon (M-N-C) nanocatalysts with increasing durability and activity in the oxygen reduction reaction of fuel cells and metal-air batteries still remains a challenge. Herein, a highly efficient three-dimensional Co-N-C nanocuboids (CoN/CNCs) catalyst synthesized through co-pyrolysis of cobalt benzimidazole frameworks and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is reported. The distinct porous nanocuboids and g-C3N4 play the vital role in improving ORR performance by fully exposing Co-N active sites, increasing the electron-transfer efficiency, and facilitating the mass transport. Additionally, Co atoms anchored on highly graphitized carbon matrix are conducive to the inhibition of the aggregation of metal and carbon corrosion, thereby boosting the activity and stability of catalyst. The optimal CoN/CNCs-800 nanohybrid exhibits superior catalytic performance towards ORR, with values for E1/2 of 0.852 V and for JL of 5.18 mA/cm2, close to the standard of commercial Pt/C (0.860 V and 5.29 mA/cm2). Based on the Koutecky-Levich plots, the number of electron transferred for CoN/CNCs-800 is calculated to be 4.0, indicating that ORR over CoN/CNCs-800 follows a 4-e- pathway. Meanwhile, the CoN/CNCs-800 catalyst displays an excellent methanol tolerance and long-term stability. This work presents a universal strategy for rationally designing and preparing three-dimensional Co-N-C nanocuboids towards boosting the catalytic ORR performance.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction in fuel cells. Designing electrocatalysts with outstanding performance is always the key to renewable-energy technologies for fuel cells. Herein, we demonstrate the Fe, Co, and N co-doped porous carbon nanofibers (FeCo/N-C CNFs) as a novel high-performance electrocatalyst for ORR. The synthesis method of this electrocatalysts material is very simple via high-temperature calcination pyrolysis of zinc, cobalt bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-coated electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers. In alkaline media, the FeCo/N-C CNFs shows a Pt-like ORR performance. The FeCo/N-C CNFs catalysts exhibit excellent performance with an onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.83 V in 0.1 M KOH solution, which is similar to those of 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts. Meanwhile, regarding long-term durability and methanol tolerance, the as-synthesized FeCo/N-C CNF catalysts also outperform commercial Pt/C. The unusual catalytic activity mainly from the improvement of electron transfer channels and catalytic sites arise from Fe, Co, and N doping in the porous structure carbon nanofibers.

Abstract:In this work, we utilize a one-step pyrolysis method to thermally synthesize a non-precious cobalt-based nitrogen-doped graphene (Co-NG) using graphene oxide (GO) and guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCl) with a small amount of CoCl2 precursor as a low-cost and highly efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The synthesized cobalt-based nitrogen-doped graphene (Co-NG) was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrocatalytic activity of the Co-NG composite towards the ORR was evaluated using linear sweep voltammetry method. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the obtained Co-NG 850 composite has excellent catalytic activity towards the ORR in an alkaline electrolyte, including a large kinetic-limiting current density and good stability, as well as it exhibits the desirable four-electron pathway for the formation of water. These superior properties make the Co-NG 850 a promising cathode catalyst for alkaline fuel cells.
A highly efficient catalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction in neutral media for microbial fuel cells

Abstract:A nanocomposite of cobaltosic oxide and nitrogen-doped graphene (Co3O4/N-G) was prepared by the facile hydrothermal method. Morphology characterizations show that the Co3O4 nanoparticles with crystalline spinel structure are uniformly dispersed on the nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets, and the graphene weight fraction in Co3O4/N-G composite is estimated to be similar to 20%. Meanwhile, electrochemical measurements reveal that the as-prepared Co3O4/N-G nanocomposite exhibits a high catalytic activity and long-term stability in neutral electrolyte. Moreover, the use of Co3O4/N-G as cathode catalyst for oxygen reduction in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to produce electricity was also investigated. The obtained maximum power density was 1340 +/- 10 mW m(-2), which was as high as almost four times that of the plain cathode (340 +/- 10 mW m(-2)), and only slightly lower than that of a commercial Pt/C catalyst (1470 +/- 10 mW m(-2)). All the results prove that a Co3O4/N-G hybrid can be a good alternative to platinum catalysts for practical MFC applications.
In-situ Coupling FeN Nanocrystals with Fe/Fe3C Nanoparticles to N-doped Carbon Nanosheets for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Hetero-nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon show promising potential application in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) based composite with FeN species and Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Fe/Fe3C@FeN-Cs) has been successfully synthesized by an in-situ reduction of pre-designed Fe-N-2-O-2 units. Benefit from the compositional and structural synergistic effect, the optimized Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900 displays excellent ORR activity in both acidic (E-1/2 = 0.77 V) and alkaline (E-1/2 = 0.88 V) electrolytes, which are comparable and even superior to the benchmark Pt/C. Impressively, the maximum power density of fuel cell using Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900 as cathode catalyst reaches 408 mW cm(-2). Moreover, the Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900-drived rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) deliver a higher power density (156.8 mW cm(-2)), larger specific capacity (775 mA h g(-1)) and better cycling stability (270 cycles) as compared with the state-of-the-art Pt/C counterpart. The interfacial electron transfer between Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles and neighboring FeN species, as well as the porous carbon architecture contribute to the excellent ORR performance of Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900, resulting in the easily adsorption/activation of O-2 and accelerated ORR kinetics because of the fast mass transfer. The COF-derived synthetic strategy inspires new perspectives to develop hetero-nanoparticle composites as high-efficiency ORR electrocatalysts for the economical-practical energy conversion devices.
Nanosheets Co3O4 Interleaved with Graphene for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Efficient yet inexpensive electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are an essential component of renewable energy devices, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. We herein interleaved novel Co3O4 nanosheets with graphene to develop a first ever sheet-on-sheet heterostructured electrocatalyst for ORR, whose electrocatalytic activity outperformed the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C with exceptional durability in alkaline solution. The composite demonstrates the highest activity of all the nonprecious metal electrocatalysts, such as those derived from Co3O4 nanoparticle/nitrogen-doped graphene hybrids and carbon nanotube/nanoparticle composites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the outstanding performance originated from the significant charge transfer from graphene to Co3O4 nanosheets promoting the electron transport through the whole structure. Theoretical calculations revealed that the enhanced stability can be ascribed to the strong interaction generated between both types of sheets.
