Abstract:Collagen fiber/BaSO4 hybrid materials were successfully prepared in this study via in situ organic-inorganic process. The surface morphology, hybrid mechanism and thermal stability of these materials were also characterized. Two other experiments were designed to test their water adsorption and free fatty acids (FFA) adsorption ability. Precipitated by BaCl2, the BaSO4 particles were evenly distributed in collagen fiber, with particle size increasing up to 5 mu m with decreasing BaCl2 concentration to 0.5 wt%. The form of BaSO4 particles changed from crystalline phase to amorphous phase when the concentration was increased above 1.5 wt%. Chelating interactions between collagen fiber and BaSO4 precipitate were also detected. The decomposition temperatures for the collagen fiber/BaSO4 hybrid materials were improved with introduction of BaSO4 particles, while the water adsorption rate was reduced from 249% to 174%. The FFA adsorption ability of the materials was dependent on the content and forms of BaSO4 particles in the hybrid materials.
