Abstract:A novel antimicrobial composite material was prepared by encapsulating orange essential oil (OEO) in zein prolamine (ZP) via the coaxial electrospinning (ES) technique. By manipulating process parameters, the morphological features of ZP/OEO fibers were modulated. Fine fibers with diameters ranging from 0.7 to 2.3 μm were obtained by regulating ZP solution concentration and process parameters during the ES process. Optimal loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of OEO in fibrous ZP mats were determined to be 22.28% and 53.68%, respectively, and were achieved using a 35 w/v% ZP ES solution. The encapsulation of OEO was found to be reliant on ZP solution concentration (the enveloping medium). SEM analysis indicates the surface morphology of ZP/OEO electrospun fibers is dependent on ZP solution loading volume, with lower ZP concentrations yielding defective fibrous structures (for example, beaded and spindled-string like morphologies). Furthermore, this loading volume also influences OEO LC, EE, mat water contact angle and oil retention. CCK-8 assay and cell morphology assessment (HEK293T cells) indicate no significant change with electrospun ZP and ZP/OEO fibrous membranes over an 8 h period. Antimicrobial activity assessment using Escherichia coli, suggests composite nonwovens possess sterilization properties; elucidating potential application in active food packaging, food preservation and therefore sustainability.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Monolaurin (M) is a potential natural antimicrobial agent used in foods. It is considered to have an antimicrobial activity against gram‐positive bacteria. A monolaurin microemulsion (MME) system inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium digitatum. Microemulsions (MEs) are transparent, isotropic solutions of oil, surfactant, cosurfactant and water, which are thermodynamically stable and have been much studied in terms of pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. The growth of B. subtilis was inhibited more strongly by MME than by M. A similar pattern was observed for E. coli, A. niger and P. digitatum, although an enhanced inhibition by MME system over that obtained in comparable M alone was not observed.PRACTICAL APPLICATIONSMonolaurin is considered to have an antimicrobial activity against gram‐positive bacteria but not against gram‐negative bacteria. A monolaurin microemulsion system inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium digitatum, and will be regarded as a “natural” antimicrobial preservative.

Abstract:We explored the potential of different nanoparticles (TiO2, CaCO3, and Al2O3), considering their pure form and modified with cinnamon essential oil (CEO). These materials were characterized using various techniques, including FTIR spectroscopy, XRD analysis, TGA, and SEM. The interaction between CEO and nanoparticles changed depending on the nanoparticle type. Al2O3 nanoparticles exhibited the strongest interaction with CEO, increasing their antioxidant capacity by around 40% and their transfer of antimicrobial properties, particularly against Gram-negative bacteria. In contrast, TiO2 and CaCO3 nanoparticles showed limited interaction with CEO, resulting in lower antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity. Incorporating pure and CEO-modified nanoparticles into polylactic acid (PLA) films improved their mechanical and thermal properties, which are suitable for applications requiring greater strength. This research highlights the potential of metal oxide nanoparticles to enhance the antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities of polymers. In addition, incorporating cinnamon essential oil can increase the antioxidant and antimicrobial effectiveness of the metal oxide nanoparticles and improve the mechanical and thermal properties of PLA films. Thus, these PLA films exhibit favorable characteristics for active packaging applications.

Abstract:Cinnamomum verum essential oil and its main component, cinnamaldehyde, were incorporated into nanoemulsions to improve their stability and activity. Oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions were prepared using the high-energy ultra-sonication method. Cinnamon oil nanoemulsion exhibited a more vigorous DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 1.81 mg/L) than the standard α-tocopherol (IC50 = 9.16 mg/L). Cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsion exhibited the highest antibacterial action against Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 175 and 150 mg/L, respectively). It was also displayed the highest inhibition against Candida albicans (EC50 = 19.92 mg/L). Cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsion was the most active against mycelial growth of Aspergillus flavus and A. niger (EC50 = 38.20 and 134.80 mg/L, respectively). It also presented the highest activity against spore germination. This study describes antimicrobials and antioxidants based on nanoemulsions made from natural products that can be used to treat microbial infections.

Abstract:Antibacterial effect of cinnamon oil combined with thyme or clove oil was studied in this paper. Agar dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the essential oils (EOs) of cinnamon, thyme, and clove oil against three Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus), and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium). The results showed that cinnamon was a promising antibacterial substance with MIC ranged from 0.1 to 0.4 μL mL−1 for the five bacterial species. Agar dilution checkerboard method was used to test the combined antibacterial effect of cinnamon oil with thyme or clove oil. Combination of cinnamon and thyme oil showed an additive effect against all selected bacteria, and combination of cinnamon and clove oil displayed an additive effect against B. subtilis, B. cereus, S. aureus, and an indifferent effect against E. coli and S. typhimurium. Furthermore, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) measurement was used to analyze the components of the EOs, and the main components of cinnamon, thyme, and clove were cinnamaldehyde, thymol, carvacrol and/p-cymene, and eugenol, respectively.

Abstract:We present a 47-year-old man with acute lymphocytic leukemia with a pericardial friction rub heralding pericardial aspergillosis. The clinical course was complicated by pneumopericardium, likely secondary to a direct connection between the lung parenchyma and the pericardial space. Bronchoalveolar lavage cultures returned positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger. Combination voriconazole and vancomycin resulted in symptomatic improvement within 2 weeks of hospitalization.

Abstract:The objective of this article was to combine tea polyphenols, gallic acid, and cinnamon essential oil to construct a natural extract-complex microemulsion system (NMs) with good antibacterial activity, antioxidant activity, and stability, as well as low irritation. NMs were characterized by particle size distribution, electrical conductivity, and light transmittance. The stability, as well as the antimicrobial, antioxidant, irritation, and antimicrobial mechanisms, of NMs were also studied. The results showed that NMs had a significant antimicrobial function against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus brasiliensis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations were 156 μg/mL, 62.5 μg/mL, 125 μg/mL, 250 μg/mL, and 125 μg/mL, respectively. Through the cell membrane permeability test and growth curve test of bacteria and fungi, we concluded that the NMs’ mechanism of action on bacteria and fungi could be interpreted as NMs mainly altering the permeability of cell membranes to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. The results of this study have important implications for utilizing plant extracts as natural preservatives for food and cosmetics.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of alginate beads filled with cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsions (CEONs). The influence of the alginate and CaCl2 concentrations on their physical, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties was studied. The droplet size of CEON was 146.20 ± 39.28 nm and the zeta potential was -33.8 ± 0.72 mV demonstrating proper nanoemulsions stability. Decreasing the alginate and CaCl2 concentrations resulted in higher EOs release due to the increased pore size of the alginate beads. The scavenging activity of DPPH of beads was found to be dependent on the alginate and calcium ion concentrations which affected the pore size of the fabricated beads. The FT-IR results declared the new bands in the spectra of filled hydrogel beads, which verified the encapsulation of EOs in the beads. The surface morphology of beads was studied using SEM images which showed the spherical shape and porous structure of alginate beads. In addition, the alginate beads filled with CEO nanoemulsion demonstrated strong antibacterial activity.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the best level of addition of cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) essential oil in the manufacture of edible films so as to produce good antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. The materials used were hydrolyzed casein, chitosan and gelatin with different proportions of cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) essential oil added. This research method was a completely randomized design laboratory experiment with five treatments including without cinnamon essential oil (P0) and with cinnamon essential oil 0.5% (P1), 1% (P2), 1.5% (P3) and 2% (P4) with four replications. The variable measured was the antimicrobial activity of the edible film against Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) if there were significant differences or very significant differences. The results showed that there was a very significant difference (P 0.05) in Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Salmonella sp. The conclusion from this study is that the best results are edible films with the addition of 2% cinnamon essential oil.

Abstract:Cinnamon essential oil-mesoporous silica nanoparticles (CEO-MSNPs)/potato starch films have better antifungal activity against molds commonly found in post-harvest white mushrooms. The antifungal effects of CEO-MSNPs against Mucor sp. FJ09 species and Mucor circinelloides CNRMA 03.0371 were investigated. The antifungal mechanisms of CEO-MSNPs against molds were elucidated. Results showed that after adding CEO-MSNPs at the minimum inhibitory concentration level, there were obvious changes in membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, cell component leakage, cell component leakage, soluble sugar, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. The scanning electron microscope assay showed that CEO-MSNPs effectively destroyed the mycelial morphology of Mucor sp. FJ09 species and Mucor circinelloides CNRMA 03.0371, and interfered with their normal growth. Notably, CEO-MSNPs could be in the up-regulation of nox1 and nox2 genes of Mucor sp. FJ09 species and Mucor circinelloides CNRMA 03.0371 to generate a large number of reactive oxygen species, thereby inhibiting spore germination and growth. The results of this study could provide a reference for screening key targets of drug resistance of molds in post-harvest white mushrooms.

Abstract:Ultrasonic-assisted green synthesis of silver nanoparticles is gaining more attention owing to its benefits over conventional synthesis process. The main objective of this study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles with aqueous cinnamon extract using ultrasound-assisted extraction and their physico-chemical characterization. Total phenolic content, DPPH, FRAP of cinnamon aqueous extract were 315 mg GAE/g, 89% scavenging activity and 9.5 mmol Trolox eq/100 g reducing power respectively. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-rays Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-rays (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). XRD spectra depicted that the nanoparticles were crystallite in structure and 50 nm in size. SEM micrographs showed that nanoparticles were spherical in shape. EDX, FTIR and NMR spectra indicated that the phenolic compounds present in cinnamon aqueous extract played their role in capping and reducing the silver ions. Cinnamon-based silver nanoparticles showed potential antimicrobial activity against Gram negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Thus, cinnamon extract obtained through ultrasonic-assisted extraction could be a valuable source of polyphenols, which actively participated in the reduction and stabilization of silver nanoparticles.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a well known method for the manufacturing of nanoscale fibers. Electrospun nanofibers have higher surface area to volume ratio and can be used for the incorporation of different materials. Essential oils are well known for their antimicrobial and healing properties since ancient times. The main objective of this study was to develop antibacterial nanofibers by the incorporation of essential oils in sodium alginate/PVA solution. Sodium alginate and PVA have excellent biocompatible properties which are the base of their use in wound care applications. Three different essential oils (cinnamon, clove, and lavender) at three different concentrations (0.5, 1 and 1.5%) were used to optimize the fiber forming conditions during electrospinning and then the desired antibacterial properties were evaluated. Addition of oils in PVA/SA solutions increased the viscosity but reduced the surface tension and conductivity as compared to pure PVA/sodium alginate solution. FTIR Spectra of composite fibers verified the successful incorporation of essential oils in nanofibers through electrospinning. All oil containing samples showed good antibacterial properties against staphylococcus aureus which make them a good replacement of antibiotics. Cinnamon oil loaded nanofibers showed the best results among selected oils regarding the antibacterial properties. Nanofibers with 1.5% cinnamon oil exhibited highest zone of inhabitation of 2.7 cm. Nanofibrous coated cotton gauze showed higher liquid absorptions as compared to simple cotton gauze and potential to be used as wound dressings for its improved liquid absorption and antibacterial activity.

Abstract:Several chitosan sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) nanoparticles embedded with Torreya grandis aril essential oils (TEOs) were synthesized using an emulsion-ionic gelation technique. Mannosylerythritol lipid A (MEL-A), a type of biosurfactant, was selected as the emulsifier. In order to replace acetic acid, an ionic liquid (IL) was employed to dissolve chitosan. The physical properties, diameters, morphology, embedding rate, and antibacterial effects of those essential oil loaded chitosan (CS) nanoparticles were characterized. The results demonstrated that chitosan nanoparticles can be successfully prepared in an ionic liquid containing system and the diameters for nanoparticles in acetic acid and ionic liquid solutions are 144.1 ± 1.457 and 219.0 ± 4.045 nm. After loading with essential oils, the size increased to 349.6 ± 10.55 and 542.9 ± 16.74 nm, respectively. Antibacterial properties were investigated by the observation of the inhibition zone against S. aureus. The results revealed that TEO loaded nanoparticles synthesized in acid and IL aqueous systems have stronger antibacterial activities than CS nanoparticles.
Remarkable enhancement of cinnamaldehyde antimicrobial activity encapsulated in capped mesoporous nanoparticles: A new "nanokiller" approach in the era of antimicrobial resistance

Abstract:Combating antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest health challenges because of the ineffectiveness of standard biocide treatments. This challenge could be approached using natural products, which have demonstrated powerful therapeutics against multidrug-resistant microbes. In the present work, a nanodevice consisting of mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with an essential oil component (cinnamaldehyde) and functionalized with the polypeptide ε-poly-l-lysine is developed and used as an antimicrobial agent. In the presence of the corresponding stimuli (i.e., exogenous proteolytic enzymes from bacteria or fungi), the polypeptide is hydrolyzed, and the cinnamaldehyde delivery is enhanced. The nanodevice's release mechanism and efficacy are evaluated in vitro against the pathogenic microorganisms Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The results demonstrate that the new device increases the delivery of the cinnamaldehyde via a biocontrolled uncapping mechanism triggered by proteolytic enzymes. Moreover, the nanodevice notably improves the antimicrobial efficacy of cinnamaldehyde when compared to the free compound, ca. 52-fold for E. coli, ca. 60-fold for S. aureus, and ca. 7-fold for C. albicans. The enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil component is attributed to the decrease of its volatility due to its encapsulation in the porous silica matrix and the increase of its local concentration when released due to the presence of microorganisms.

Abstract:Cinnamon essential oil (CNO) is a natural and renewable antibacterial agent. However, CNO is highly volatile and unstable, which limits its practical application as a long-term and wide antibacterial agent. In order to improve the CNO stability, we have microencapsulated CNO into composite microcapsules basing on Pickering emulsion stabilized by silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles. The CNO-loaded composite microcapsules possess the hybrid microcapsule shell including SiO 2 , xanthan gum and chitosan. Moreover, the results show that the microcapsules have spherical appearance. Microencapsulation technique effectively promotes the CNO stability, and the loaded CNO is slowly released from microcapsules. The antibacterial test indicates that the minimal inhibitory concentration of microcapsules was 2 mg mL −1 against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and the microcapsules can play an effective long-term antibacterial effect. Thus, Pickering emulsion templates is a convenient and effective technique to construct antibacterial essential oil-contained microcapsules, which can be used as long-term antibacterial agents.

Abstract:Plant essential oils (EO) are increasingly used as food preservatives due to their antibacterial and antioxidant activities. For such applications, EO are commonly microencapsulated to overcome their poor stability, low solubility and dominant aromas. But, typically, individual EO act against only a narrow range of bacterial species. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to develop a microencapsulated preservative using a combination of three EO and to determine its anti-bacterial action against three common food contaminants, viz. Escherichia coli , Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus , and one, usually, beneficial species, viz. Lactoplantibacillus plantarum . The EO of cinnamon ( Cinnamomum cassia ), peppermint ( Mentha haplocalyx ) and lemon ( Citrus limon) were combined in the proportions, 1.0 : 1.8: 2.4, respectively and were encapsulated in gelatin-chitosan by spray drying. The particle size, zeta potential, moisture content, and encapsulation rate of the essential oil microcapsules (EOM) were measured. With increasing EOM exposure time, the concentrations of E. coli , Salmonella , S. aureus and L. plantarum decreased by 3, 3, 4, and 5 orders of magnitude, respectively. Cell apoptosis accompanied loss of membrane integrity and permeability, inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase activity and disruption of organic acid metabolism. Gram-positive bacteria ( S. aureus and L. plantarum ) were more susceptible to those effects of EOM than Gram-negative bacteria ( E. coli and Salmonella ). It also demonstrates that in applications as preservatives for probiotic foods requiring live L. plantarum , EOM comprising cinnamon, peppermint or lemon EO should be avoided.

Abstract:The emergence of resistant bacterial and fungal strains poses significant challenges in various industrial processes including food, medicines, and leather industry. It necessitates the development of novel and effective antimicrobial agents. In the present work, we have developed an ecofriendly and sustainable approach to synthesize silver-doped copper oxide nanoparticles by using cinnamon bark extract (C-CuO/Ag). The nanoparticles were characterized via UV–visible spectroscopy at 190–800 nm, FT-IR, SEM-EDAX, XRD, and further subjected to determine antimicrobial potential, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and anti-biofilm potential against both bacterial and fungal species. UV–visible spectrum showed maximum absorption at 210 nm in ultraviolet range and 419 nm in visible range. Various strong and weak peaks were obtained in FT-IR spectra, which defined the presence of corresponding functional groups in C–CuO/Ag nanoparticles. SEM analysis revealed the tightly packed confirmation, while EDS confirmed the elemental analysis of C-CuO/Ag nanoparticles. XRD spectrum of C-CuO/Ag nanoparticles showed strong diffraction peaks at 2Ө of 31.92 ̊, 35.67 ̊, and 48.51 ̊, which confined with the plane indices of (-110), (111), and (− 202), respectively, while weak diffraction peaks at 2Ө of 56.31 ̊, 58.9 ̊, and 77.4 ̊, which leads to the crystal planes of (202), (− 220), and (311), respectively. Antimicrobial assays showed clear zones of inhibition against microbial strains as maximum inhibition diameter was observed against Aspergillus niger (31.5 ± 0.7 mm) followed by Escherichia coli (30.1 ± 0.3 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (29.5 ± 0.7 mm). These findings provide support clear evidence that CuO nanoparticles can serve as potent antibacterial and antifungal compounds against highly resistive and pathogenic microbial strains.

Abstract:The composite nanoparticles labeled as ZCP/C–CNC were synthesized by the combination of zein colloidal nanoparticles (ZCP) and carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (C–CNC). The effects of the mass ratio of ZCP to C–CNC on the particle size, polydispersity index, ζ-potential, surface wettability and microstructure of ZCP/C–CNC were studied. The ZCP/C–CNC were used to stabilize cinnamon essential oil (CEO). The effects of ZCP/C–CNC on the properties of Pickering emulsions were investigated, including the interfacial tension, stability, encapsulation efficiency (EE), interfacial structure and antibacterial activity. With increasing of ZCP, the average particle size of ZCP/C–CNC firstly decreased and then increased, which was the smallest (196 nm) when the mass ratio of ZCP to C–CNC was 1. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the structure of composite nanoparticles was featured that C–CNC layers wrapped ZCP. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) showed that CEO was effectively encapsulated by ZCP/C–CNC. When the mass ratio of ZCP to C–CNC was 1, the three-phase contact angle of the nanoparticle was 89.65°, showing the best surface wettability. And the CEO Pickering emulsion stabilized by this nanoparticle exhibited the smallest average particle size. It also showed the best stability and the best antibacterial activity against E. coli , S. aureus and S. putrefaciens . The EE of composite nanoparticles for CEO was significantly higher than that of pure ZCP or C–CNC particles, which all exceeded 91%. The Pickering emulsions stabilized by ZCP/C–CNC provided a promising alternative for the delivery of antimicrobial essential oils in the food, active packaging material and other related industries.

Abstract:The authors report the case of a 57-year old woman who was susceptible to malignant hyperthermia (MH) and also had central core disease (CCD) of muscle. The latter was asymptomatic and was discovered when muscle biopsy was performed for in vitro tests of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. This case was compared with the 117 cases of CCD and 33 cases of CCD associated with MH published in the literature. Anaesthesia-induced MH is lethal in 80 per cent of the cases without treatment and in 20 per cent with treatment. CCD and MH are both transmitted as autosomal dominant traits. Susceptibility to MH is a functional abnormality of unknown mechanism. CCD is a disease of muscle fibre structure. One may hope that molecular studies and genetic probes will show whether or not these two diseases are transmitted by genes that are similar but distinct and independent.
