Abstract:This work focuses on the observer design for a first order ODE-transport PDE coupled at the boundary points. A novel anti-collocated observer and an output feedback boundary control law are designed for an under-actuated coupled system using the backstepping method. The homo-directional hyperbolic type PDE is considered with in-domain coupling between the states. The stabilization of the coupled systems are discussed by Lyapunov theory and linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is implemented to design the gains. The obtained results show that the observer value coincides with the actual ones and it has been demonstrated through numerical examples. The effectiveness of the output feed-back controller is also illustrated. (c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, the finite-time bounded control problem for coupled parabolic PDE-ODE systems subject to time-varying boundary disturbances and to time-invariant boundary disturbances is considered. First, the concept of finite-time boundedness is extended to coupled parabolic PDE-ODE systems. A Neumann boundary feedback controller is then designed in terms of the state variables. By applying the Lyapunov-like functional method, sufficient conditions which ensure the finite-time boundedness of closed-loop systems in the presence of time-varying boundary disturbances and time-invariant boundary disturbances are provided, respectively. Finally, the issues regarding the finite-time boundedness of coupled parabolic PDE-ODE systems are converted into the feasibility of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), and the effectiveness of the proposed results is validated with two numerical simulations.

Abstract:The known theory on the one-side exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the unknown variables are suitably coupled or satisfy the Group Property in boundary conditions at the non-control side(see[5],[10]). In this paper we illustrate, with an inspiring example, that the one-side exact boundary controllability can still be realized by means of a suitable coupling among the unknown variables in the quasilinear hyperbolic system itself instead of in boundary conditions.
Boundary Feedback Control of Unstable Heat Equation with Space and Time Dependent Coefficient

Abstract:In this paper, we study the control of the linear heat equation with a space and time dependent coefficient function by the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary control laws. This equation models the heat diffusion and space, time dependent heat generation in a one dimensional rod. Without control, the system is unstable if the coefficient function is positive and large. With boundary control based on the state feedback, we show that for the time analytic coefficient $a(x,t)$, the exponential stability of the system at any rate can be achieved. It is further shown that both the control of the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value systems can be stabilized using this method. In doing this, the control kernels are {\it explicitly} calculated as series of approximation and they are used in the simulations. The numerical simulation confirmed the theoretical arguments and the controllability of the system. The possible future works are discussed at the end. This is the continuation of the recent work of Liu [{\it SIAM J. Cont. Optim.} vol. 42, pp. 1033-1043] and Smyshlyaev and Krstic [accepted by {\it Automatica}].

Abstract:This paper deals with controllability properties of a cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation with dynamic boundary conditions. More precisely, we prove a local null controllability result by using a single control supported in a small subset of the domain. In order to achieve this result, we firstly linearize the system around the origin and we analyze it by the duality approach and an appropriate Carleman estimate. Then, by using an inverse function theorem, the local null controllability of the nonlinear system is proven.

Abstract:We study the linear Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation with periodic boundary conditions. Employing some tools from the nonharmonic Fourier series we obtain several internal observability theorems. Then we prove various exact controllability and rapid uniform stabilization results by applying a duality principle and a general feedback construction. The method presented here introduces a new insight into the control of dispersive equations on two-dimensional cases and may be adapted to more general equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the observability and controllability of wave equations coupled by first or zero order terms on a compact manifold. We adopt the approach in Dehman-Lebeau's paper \cite{DehmanLebeau09} to prove that: the weak observability inequality holds for wave equations coupled by first order terms on compact manifold without boundary if and only if a class of ordinary differential equations related to the symbol of the first order terms along the Hamiltonian flow are exactly controllable. We also compute the higher order part of the observability constant and the observation time. By duality, we obtain the controllability of the dual control system in a finite co-dimensional space. This gives the full controllability under the assumption of unique continuation of eigenfunctions. Moreover, these results can be applied to the systems of wave equations coupled by zero order terms of cascade structure after an appropriate change of unknowns and spaces. Finally, we provide some concrete examples as applications where the unique continuation property indeed holds.

Abstract:We give a boundary observability result for a $1$d wave equation with a potential. We then deduce with a Schauder fixed-point argument the existence of a Neumann boundary control for a semi-linear wave equation $\partial_{tt}y - \partial_{xx}y + f(y) = 0$ under an optimal growth assumption at infinity on $f$ of the type $s\ln^2s$. Moreover, assuming additional assumption on $f'$, we construct a minimizing sequence which converges to a control. Numerical experiments illustrate the results. This work extends to the Neumann boundary control case the work of Zuazua in $1993$ and the work of Münch and Trélat in $2022$.

Abstract:This paper deals with the local exact boundary controllability for dynamics governed by nonlinear wave equations, subject to Dirichlet, Neumann, or any other kind of boundary controls which result in well- posedness of the corresponding initial- boundary value problem. A constructive method is developed. The local exact boundary controllability for semilinear wave equations is constructed in the case of both three ( odd) and two ( even) space dimensions, and the boundary control is time optimal when the space dimension is three ( odd). Especially, the local exact boundary controllability is established for quasi- linear wave equations in several space dimensions by using the constructive method.

We introduce abstract boundary data spaces in which the control and observation equations can be formulated without strong geometric constraints on the underlying domain. Abstract:This article focuses on the exact null controllability of a one-dimensional wave equation in noncylindrical domains. Both the fixed endpoint and the moving endpoint are Neumann-type boundary conditions. The control is put on the moving endpoint. When the speed of the moving endpoint is less than the characteristic speed, we can obtain the exact null controllability of this equation by using the Hilbert uniqueness method. In addition, we get a sharper estimate on controllability time that depends on the speed of the moving endpoint.

Abstract:The complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) is a general model of spatially extended nonequilibrium systems. In this paper, an analytical method for a variable coefficient CGLE is presented to obtain exact solutions. Variable transformations for space and time variables with coefficient functions yield an imaginary time advection equation related to a complex valued characteristic curve. The variable coefficient CGLE is transformed into the nonlinear Schr{"ø}dinger equation (NLSE) on the complex valued characteristic curve. This result indicates that the analytical solutions of the NLSE generate that of the variable coefficient CGLE.
