Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing protocol for the detection of TNT prepared from alkanethiols self-assembled on AuNPs modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode with preadsorbed templates of TNT. It demonstrated that the 2D molecular imprinting monolayers (MIMs) can provide a better site accessibility and lower mass-transfer resistance, while the AuNPs can enhance electrode conductivity, facilitate the electron transfer and increase the amount of TNT-imprinted sites. The prepared sensor showed not only high selectivity toward TNT in comparison to other similar nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), but also a wide linear range over TNT concentration from 4.0×10−8 to 3.2×10−6M with a detection limit of 1.3×10−8M (S/N=3). Moreover, the imprinted sensor has been applied to the determination of TNT in spiked environmental water samples and shows promise for fast and sensitive measurement of trace levels of TNT in real samples.

Abstract:The structurally stable molecularly imprinted hollow microspheres (MIHM) were prepared by the Pickering emulsion method using ZIF-8 as the stable particle and amoxicillin (AMOX) as the template molecule. MIHM were used to separate amoxicillin from solution. The physicochemical properties and adsorption properties of MIHM were studied by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and static adsorption experiments. The results show that ZIF-8 nanoparticles can stabilize the Pickering emulsion, and the particles are distributed on the surface of hollow MIHM capsules with a capsule size of about 20-80 mu m. The results of adsorption experiments showed that MIHM had a large adsorption capacity for AMOX, and reached an adsorption capacity of 0.1577 mmol g(-1) in AMOX solution (308 K, pH = 7.0, and 100 mg L-1). MIHM showed high selectivity for AMOX in selective adsorption experiments. After 5 cycles of recycling, the adsorption capacity of materials only decreased by 9.03%. So, it proves that the MIHM have good regenerability.

Abstract:In this study, a nanobiosensor for detecting explosives was developed, in which the peptide was synthesized with trinitrotoluene (TNT)-specific sequence and immobilized on nanodevice by Au–S covalent linkage, and the nanocup arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint and deposited with Au nanoparticles to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The device was used to monitor slight change from specific binding of 2,4,6-TNT to the peptide. With high refractive index sensing of ~10 4 nm/RIU, the nanocup device can detect the binding of TNT at concentration as low as 3.12 × 10 −7 mg mL −1 by optical transmission spectrum modulated by LSPR. The nanosensor is also able to distinguish TNT from analogs of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 3-nitrotoluene in the mixture with great selectivity. The peptide-based nanosensor provides novel approaches to design versatile biosensor assays by LSPR for chemical molecules.

Abstract:<p>Colorimetric, selective and sensitive screening of explosives is important not only to military action but also to public security. Normal explosives detection is mainly targeted for nitroaromatic compounds, however, ntiramine explosive is used more widely due to its outstanding performance. Herein, molecularly imprinted photonic crystal (MIPC) sensors were made to detect typical nitramine explosives: 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), cyclotetramethylenete-tranitramine (HMX) and 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20). And 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) templated MIPC was also made to discriminate not only nitramines but also nitrobenzene explosives. With explosives concentration increase, the diffraction peak and structure color of MIPC sensors both red shifted within 5 min. By adding alkaline solution, the MIPC sensors were softened, and the mass transfer and the sensitivity were improved. The MIPC sensors could respond to lower than 0.05 mM explosives with the limit of detection of 0.01 mM. A MIPC sensor array with the above MIPCs was constructed to achieve a semi-quantitative detection, and Pattern Recognition with a 48 × 4 multivariate data matrix was using to discriminate different explosive molecules. According to principal component analysis, the response of RDX, HMX, CL-20 and TNT scattered in separate areas, and the sensor array could discriminate with a LOD of 1 mM.</p>

Abstract:Polymeric porous adsorbents are reported for removal of explosives, namely picric acid, 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX), and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and their subsequent quantification using direct analysis with ambient plasma mass spectrometry. The adsorbents are obtained by functionalization of short-chain poly(2-oxazoline)s with methyl ester side chains using 4-(aminomethyl)pyridine with a degree of functionalization equal to 0, 5, 10, and 20%. The subsequent step consist of cross-linking using a high internal phase emulsion procedure by further side-chain amidation with diethylenetriamine as crosslinker. Picric acid, RDX, and PETN were chosen as the model compounds as they belong to three different groups of explosives, in particular nitroaromatics, nitroamines, and nitrate esters, respectively. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics, as well as the influence of pH and temperature on the adsorption process was investigated. The porous adsorbents showed the highest maximum adsorption capacity towards picric acid, reaching 334 mg g-1, while PETN (80 mg g-1) and RDX (17.4 mg g-1) were less efficiently adsorbed. Subsequent quantification of the adsorbed explosives is performed by a specially designed ambient mass spectrometry setup equipped with a thermal heater. The obtained limits of detection were found to be 20-times improved compared to direct analysis of analyte solutions. The effectiveness of the proposed analytical setup is confirmed by successful quantification of the explosives in river water samples. The research clearly shows that functional porous adsorbents coupled directly with ambient mass spectrometry can be used for rapid quantification of explosives, which can be, e.g., used for tracking illegal manufacturing sites of these compounds.

Abstract:To better understand the complex situation of diffusion-adsorption of small gas molecules in molecularly imprinted porous (MIP) systems, two general and suitable physicomathematical models have been developed for the molecularly imprinted mesoporous film and its nanostructured counterparts. These theoretical and numerical formulations give a quantitative and general description of the complicated diffusion-absorption kinetic behavior of trace analytes in the MIP systems. These models show a strong dependence of the performance (sensitivity and selectivity) of the constructed chemosensors on their structure and imprinting efficiency, and provide the determined preparation factors to achieve high-performance chemosensors. As a demonstration, chemosensors based on the TNT-imprinted mesoporous films with P6mm structures were fabricated, and confirmed the validity and suitability of the physicomathematical models. Yet, these modes may easily be modified and expanded to other research fields, such as catalysis and separation.

Abstract:On the basis of the combination of colloidal and mesophase templating, as well as molecular imprinting, a general and effective approach for the preparation of hierarchically structured trimodal porous silica films was developed. With this new methodology, controlled formation of well-defined pore structures not only on macro- and mesoscale but also on microscale can be achieved, affording a new class of hierarchical porous materials with molecular recognition capability. As a demonstration, TNT was chosen as template molecule and hierarchically imprinted porous films were successfully fabricated, which show excellent sensing properties in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and regeneracy. The pore system reported here combines the multiple benefits arising from all length scales of pore size and simultaneously possesses a series of distinct properties such as high pore volume, large surface area, molecular selectivity, and rapid mass transport. Therefore, our described strategy and the resulting pore systems should hold great promise for various applications not only in chemical sensors, but also in catalysis, separation, adsorption, or electrode materials.

Abstract:Based on the confinement effect of the CB[8] cavity, a new strategy for explosives detection was developed by using a naphthalene embedded CB[8] complex as receptor. It was found that, dependent on the electronic structures and size of the tested explosives, the trapping of such analytes can significantly influence the photophysical properties of the naphthalene in the CB[8] nanocavity, leading to the direct detection and discrimination of distinctively different groups of trace explosives in the vapor phase, especially including the challenging aliphatic nitro-organics. Control experiments were performed to show the different sensing behaviors between the common organic vapors and nitrate-based explosives, which made it easy to realize the discrimination between target analytes and interferents. Due to the surface attached sensing elements, very fast response and high sensitivity were found in this system. The performed experiments suggested that the naphthalene embedded CB[8]-based sensing protocol opened a new way to develop a new kind of explosive sensor to enable a richer identification of threats.

Abstract:N-heterocyclic compounds are key nitration precursors for some high energy density explosives such as 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX). Nitration of 1,3,5,7-tetraacetyl-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (TAT) yields HMX in high yields and purity. However, the analogue 1,3,5-triacetyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (TRAT) is easily co-produced via the condensation of acetonitrile and 1,3,5-trioxan. To selectively extract TAT from a mixture of TAT and TRAT, the molecular imprinting technology (MIT) was developed in this study. The capacity of the dry polymer is 16mgg(-1) and the recovery surpasses 75%.

Abstract:Considering the formidable explosive power and human carcinogenicity of nitroaromatic explosives, the implementation of an accurate and sensitive detection technology is imperative for ensuring public safety and monitoring post-blast environmental contamination. In the present work, a versatile and selective electrochemical sensor based on dummy molecularly imprinted poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/laser-induced graphene (MIPEDOT/LIG) was successfully developed and the specific detection of multiple nitroaromatic explosives was realized in the single sensor. The accessible and nontoxic trimesic acid (TMA) and superior 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) were selected as the dummy-template and the functional monomer, respectively. The interaction between the functional monomer and the template, and the morphology, electrochemical properties and detection performance of the sensor were comprehensively investigated by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry. Benefiting from the alliance of TMA and EDOT, the MIPEDOT/LIG sensor manifested outstanding selectivity and sensitivity for 2,4,6-trinitrotolueen (TNT), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) (representative nitroaromatic explosives) with limits of determination of 1.95 ppb, 3.06 ppb, 2.49 ppb, 1.67 ppb, 1.94 ppb, and 4.56 ppb, respectively. The sensor also exhibited extraordinary reliability and convenience for environmental sample detection. Therefore, a perfect combination of versatility and selectivity in the MIPEDOT/ LIG sensor was achieved. The findings of this work provide a new direction for the development of multi-target electrochemical sensors using a versatile dummy template for explosives detection.
Multifunctional Flexible SERS Sensor on a Fixate Gel Pad: Capturing, Derivation, and Selective Picogram Indirect Detection of Explosive 2,2',4,4',6,6'-Hexanitrostilbene

Abstract:2,2',4,4',6,6'-Hexanitrostilbene (HNS) is an explosive with better explosion performance than the well-known 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Surprisingly, unlike other nitroaromatic explosives, there are limited reports regarding the detection of the HNS, let alone sensing reports on surface residues. In this work, a multifunctional flexible SERS sensor was proposed for the indirect detection of HNS based on the transparent fixate gel pads. The sticky and flexible gel pad can effectively collect any HNS surface residues. The inherent amine groups within the gel pad of which the main ingredient is polyurethane can react with HNS to form the orange Meisenheimer-alike complex. The modification of Ag NPs with halide ions was screened for the best SERS performance. KI-modified-citrate-reduced Ag NPs showed selective but enormous SERS enhancement for the HNS derivative. The detection of HNS in the solution phase was explored, and a linear range of 0.01-25 ppm was achieved. The lowest detectable amount (LDA) of HNS was found to be 50 pg, making it one of the most sensitive methods in literature. It was successfully utilized for the HNS residues sensing on fingerprints and bags with LDAs of 5 and 200 ng, respectively. In addition, other explosives including TATB, LLM-105, RDX, HMX, FOX-7, and TNT were also examined to assess the selectivity of the fixate. It was found that the fixate showed excellent selectivity for HNS.
Dye@Bio-Mof-1 Composite As A Dual-Emitting Platform for Enhanced Detection of A Wide Range of Explosive Molecules

Abstract:By incorporating a cationic dye within a metal-organic framework (MOF) through an ion-exchange process, a responsive dye@bio-MOF-1 composite has been synthesized, serving as a dual-emitting platform for enhanced detection of different kinds of nitro-explosives, especially nitroalkanes, nitramines, and nitrate esters. The dye@bio-MOF-1 composite was constructed with free amines on their well-defined cavities, which is essential for the capture of explosives into their confined nanospace. It was observed that the encapsulation of explosives into the constructed dye@bio-MOF-1 composite could dramatically alter the luminescent properties of the dyes as well as the MOF skeletons owing to the size exclusivity and confinement-induced effect. For nitroaromatics, the dye@bio-MOF-1 composite exhibits turn-off responses via fluorescence quenching. Unexpectedly, the composite shows unique turn-on responses for aliphatic nitro-organics via confinement-induced enhancement, demonstrating enhanced ability to detecting different kinds of explosives selectively in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the dye@bio-MOF-1 film was facilely fabricated, making the chemical sensing more convenient and easier to realize the discrimination of the targeted explosives. The dual tunable responses indicate that dye@bio-MOF-1 composites are favorable materials for molecular sensing. On the basis of the host-guest properties of the constructed dye@bio-MOF-1 composite, our work can be further extended to sensing specific analytes with remarkable turn-on sensing properties, in particular those difficult to recognize with conventional methods.
A promising sensing platform for explosive markers: Zeolite-like metal-organic framework based monolithic composite as a case study

Abstract:Preconcentration for on-site detection or subsequent determination is a promising technique for selective sensing explosive markers at low concentrations. Here, we report divinylbenzene monolithic polymer in its blank form (neat-DVB) and as a composite incorporated with sodalite topology zeolite-like metal-organic frameworks (3-ZMOF@DVB), as a sensitive, selective, and cost-effective porous preconcentrator for aliphatic nitroalkanes in the vapor phase as explosive markers at infinite dilution. The developed materials were fabricated as 18 cm gas chromatography (GC) monolithic capillary columns to study their separation performance of nitroalkane mixture and the subsequent physicochemical study of adsorption using the inverse gas chromatography (IGC) technique. A strong preconcentration effect was indicated by a specific retention volume adsorption/desorption ratio equal to 3 for nitromethane on the neat-DVB monolith host-guest interaction, and a 14% higher ratio was observed using the 3-ZMOF@DVB monolithic composite despite the low percentage of 0.7 wt.% of sod-ZMOF added. Furthermore, Incorporating ZMOF resulted in a higher percentage of micropores, increasing the degree of freedom more than bringing stronger adsorption and entropic-driven interaction more than enthalpic. The specific free energy of adsorption (ΔGS) values increased for polar probes and nitroalkanes, denoting that adding ZMOFs earned the DVB monolithic matrix a more specific character. Afterward, Lewis acid-base properties were calculated, estimating the electron acceptor (KA) and electron donor (KB) constants. The neat-DVB was found to have a Lewis basic character with KB/KA = 7.71, and the 3-ZMOF@DVB had a less Lewis basic character with KB/KA = 3.82. An increased electron-accepting nature can be directly related to incorporating sod-ZMOF into the DVB monolithic matrix. This work considers the initial step in presenting a portable explosives detector or preconcentrating explosive markers trace prior to more sophisticated analysis. Additionally, the IGC technique allows for understanding the factors that led to the superior adsorption of nitroalkanes for the developed materials.
Separation of 1,3,5,7-Tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane and 1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5- Triazacyclohexane by Molecularly Imprinted Solid-Phase Extraction.

Abstract:Synthesis of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane by the Bachmann process leads to a mixture of both. The separation of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane from their mixture is difficult because the sizes and physical properties of these homologous compounds are similar. For this purpose, seven molecularly imprinted polymers have been synthesized for each explosive, and a selective solid-phase extraction procedure has been developed. A molecularly imprinted polymer, synthesized with 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane as the template, methacrylic acid as the monomer and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate as the cross-linking agent in a molar ratio of 1:8:8 showed the best separation capability. A packed cartridge containing this polymer can be reused for 23 solid-phase extraction cycles without repacking, and the total separation capability toward 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane reached 6.81 mg per gram of polymer. 1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane was not detected in the separated 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane by high-performance liquid chromatography and vice versa. This newly developed method had the advantages of high recovery (100%) and purity, environmental friendliness, and room temperature operability. This study showed that some molecularly imprinted polymers that cannot absorb target analytes well in the solvent in which the polymers were polymerized might have high-binding capacity for the analytes and show imprinting effects in other solvents.

Abstract:The analysis of N-oxide based explosives is beneficial to avoiding explosive risk and toxic hazard to the public. Nowadays, multifunctional sensors are scarce for green extraction and analysis of N-oxide based explosives. Herein, we have designed and developed two-in-one sensing solvents (DSMs) based on deep eutectic solvents with dual functions of both extraction and detection toward N-oxide based explosives. Besides, as an extraction solvent, DSM-3 based choline chloride and urea also can detect N-oxide based explosives via color change from yellow to red. The sensing mechanism of DSM-3 toward 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) as a prototype of N-oxide-based explosives has been fully investigated by experimental analysis and theoretical calculations. The proposed mechanism is based on the formation of H-bonding complexes between urea of DSM-3 and N-oxide group of LLM-105, which induces the charge transfer from urea to LLM-105. Further, this assay exhibits high selectivity, sensitivity and good visualization for the determination of LLM-105. Therefore, our study provides novel two-in-one sensing solvent for green, convenient and on-site detection of N-oxide based explosives.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted composite materials (PM) selective to S-naproxen were prepared in the surface of mesoporous silica sphere (SBA-15) by surface imprinting technique. FT-IR, SEM and surface area analysis were used to study the structural morphology of PM and MIPs particles and probe the incorporation of polymer into the SBA-15 framework. The results revealed that PM showed better binding affinity and selectivity to the template molecule than MIPs and the maximum saturated binding capacity of PM to S-naproxen and R-naproxen was about 10.3332 and 6.0063µmol·g-1. Meanwhile, we achieve a reference strategy for the development of molecularly imprinting polymer for drugs and to handle forms in certain applications such as chromatographic stationary phases for chiral separations.
Simultaneous Determination of Organic and Cationic Species in Explosives Residues with Column-Switching Liquid Chromatography-Ion Chromatography System

Abstract:A new column-switching method has been proposed for the determination of 14 organic explosives (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-N-methylaniline, 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, nitrobenzene, 2,4,6-N-tetranitro-N-methylaniline, Trinitrotoluene, 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene, 2,6-dinitrotoluene, 2,4-dinitrotoluene, 2-nitrotoluene, 4-nitrotoluene, and 3-nitrotoluene) and/or five inorganic cations (Na(+), NH(4)(+), K(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+)) using liquid chromatography linked to ion chromatography by a switching valve. The mobile phase was methanol-water (40/60, v/v) for a C18 reversed-phase column and 3 mM of methanesulfonic acid (pH 2.5) for a cation-exchange column, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, the 14 organic explosives and the five inorganic cations were separated and detected simultaneously within 45 min. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) of the 14 organic explosives and the five inorganic cations were in the range of 0.0048-0.0333 mg/L and 0.0116-0.1851 mg/L, respectively. The linear correlation coefficients were 0.9971-0.9999, and the relative standard deviation of the retention time and the peak area were 0.02-0.31% and 0.51-3.64%, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination of organic explosives and inorganic cations in dust samples.
Narrowly Dispersed Imprinted Microspheres with Hydrophilic Polymer Brushes for the Selective Removal of Sulfamethazine

Abstract:In this work, a facile and general protocol to synthesize molecularly imprinted microspheres (MIMs), combining reverse atom transfer radical polymerization with precipitation polymerization, is described. Well-tuned surface properties in the as-obtained microspheres were achieved through the "living" nature of the active ATRP-initiators present on the surface in order to further functionalize the microspheres with hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes. The presence of a PHEMA shell on the MIMs was confirmed by SEM, FT-IR and water contact angle studies, and some quantitative information is also provided. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out in pure water to investigate the equilibrium, kinetics and selectivity properties of the imprinted materials. The adsorption data of the ungrafted imprinted materials for sulfamethazine (SMZ) were fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm model. However, after grafting, the Langmuir isotherm fits the data better, mainly because of the changes to the surface properties that increase the hydrophilicity and suppress the hydrophobically driven non-specific interactions. The imprinted microspheres exhibit a large adsorption capacity, and are also specific to SMZ but non-specific to other antibiotics. The obtained materials also show rapid kinetics and great reusability and stability, displaying potential for practical applications for the selective removal of pollutants from aqueous environments.

Abstract:A review is presented of recent developments in the use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as selective materials for solid-phase extraction. Compared with traditional sorbents, MIPs can not only concentrate but also selectively separate the target analytes from real samples, which is crucial for the quantitatively determination of analytes in complex samples. Consequently, as one of the most effective sorbents, MIPs have been successfully applied to the pretreatment of analytes in foods, drugs, and biological and environmental samples in the past five years.
