Abstract: Entirely real eigenvalues emerge for non-Hermitian systems if their Hamiltonians are symmetric or antisymmetric under the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) operations. This fact has led to many unconventional discoveries such as loss-induced lasing, sensor response enhancement and topological energy transfer. One merit of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ systems is free of any gain, but nonlinear medium is still required in recent efforts on making and utilizing anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ devices. Here, counterintuitively, we propose to achieve a $linear$ anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ device by combining dissipative optical coupling and the Sagnac frequency shifts of counterpropagating lights in a spinning resonator. Anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and its spontaneous breaking can be well controlled by tuning the spinning velocity of the resonator. Compared with its Hermitian counterpart, 6 times enhancement of optical isolation and 2 orders enhancement of sensing response can be achieved by breaking the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. Configured as a new platform to study enhanced light-matter interactions, anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ resonators can also be used in such a wide range of fields as anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ lasers, anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ gyroscopes and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ topological or chiral photonics.

Abstract:The exploration of parity-time (PT) symmetry in micro-/nano-cavity lasers has recently gained immense research interest. The PT symmetric phase transition to single-mode lasing has been achieved by arranging the spatial distribution of optical gain and loss in single or coupled cavity systems. In terms of photonic crystal (PhC) lasers, a non-uniform pumping scheme is usually employed to enter the PT symmetry-breaking phase in a longitudinal PT symmetric system. Instead, we use a uniform pumping scheme to enable the PT symmetric transition to the desired single lasing mode in line-defect PhC cavities based on a simple design with asymmetric optical loss. The flexible control of gain-loss contrast is realized by removing a few rows of air holes in PhCs. We obtain single-mode lasing with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of around 30 dB without affecting the threshold pump power and linewidth. The output power of the desired mode is six times higher than that in multimode lasing. This simple approach enables single-mode PhC lasers without sacrificing the output power, threshold pump power, and linewidth of a multimode cavity design.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a fundamental notion in quantum field theories. It has opened a new paradigm for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ranging from quantum mechanics, electronics, to optics. In the realm of optics, optical loss is responsible for power dissipation, therefore typically degrading device performance such as attenuation of a laser beam. By carefully exploiting optical loss in the complex dielectric permittivity, however, recent exploration of PT symmetry revolutionizes our understandings in fundamental physics and intriguing optical phenomena such as exceptional points and phase transition that are critical for high-speed optical modulators. The interplay between optical gain and loss in photonic PT synthetic matters offers a new criterion of positively utilizing loss to efficiently manipulate gain and its associated optical properties. Instead of simply compensating optical loss in conventional lasers, for example, it is theoretically proposed that judiciously designed delicate modulation of optical loss and gain can lead to PT synthetic lasing that fundamentally broadens laser physics. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of PT synthetic lasers. By carefully exploiting the interplay between gain and loss, we achieve degenerate eigen modes at the same frequency but with complex conjugate gain and loss coefficients. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple modes, the PT synthetic micro-ring laser exhibits an intrinsic single mode lasing: the non-threshold PT broken phase inherently associated in such a photonic system squeezes broadband optical gain into a single lasing mode regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. This chip-scale semiconductor platform provides a unique route towards fundamental explorations of PT physics and next generation of optoelectronic devices for optical communications and computing.

Abstract:Topological photonics is considered to be a robust and flexible platform for the design of nanophotonic devices against structural imperfections and performance degradation. Combining with parity-time (PT) symmetry systems based on spatially distributed gain and loss, photonic crystal (PhC) lasers with micron-size carrier reservoirs offer an ideal test bed for lasing mode competition and topological protection in nanophotonic structures. In this study, single topological edge mode (TEM) lasing is demonstrated in PhC lasers with a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice comprised of coupled nanoresonators. By inducing directional loss control, a mode selection strategy is implemented, that achieves single TEM lasing with a side-mode-suppression ratio exceeding 30 dB. One of the TEMs exhibits remarkable robustness against local potential variation introduced by additional loss channels. This strategy integrating both topological protection and PT symmetry in nanophotonics would open up new prospects for the development of on-chip single-mode topological lasers unperturbed by output channels in nanophotonic integrated circuits. Topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lasers using a chain of photonic crystal nano-resonators are demonstrated with controlled directional losses. A non-trivial topological mode can be chosen to lase with high side-mode suppression ratio in originally multi-mode lasing systems with a uniform pumping scheme. The effective combination of non-Hermiticity, topological photonics, and PhC nanostructures provides a powerful tool for on-chip nanophotonic integration. image

Abstract:The concept of parity-time (PT) symmetry exploits the interplay between the material loss and gain to attain novel optical phenomena such as exceptional point and unidirectional light propagation. Here we experimentally demonstrate a PT symmetry breaking laser that allows unique control of the resonant modes. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple competing modes, our on-chip InGaAsP/InP based PT microring laser exhibits intrinsic single-mode lasing regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. Threshold less parity-time symmetry breaking due to the rotationally symmetric structure leads to stable single-mode operation at the specific whispering gallery mode order.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) PT ) symmetry provides a new technique for the manipulation of oscillation modes in the field of microwave photonics. In this paper, we conceive and experimentally demonstrate a simple PT-symmetric all-optical microwave oscillator (AOMO) based on a single polarimetric loop, overcoming the challenges of manipulating gain and loss and mutual coupling ratio and perfect control of the geometry in the dual-loop configurations. We also uncover the analytics of the PT-symmetry condition in an AOMO with a detailed nonquantum description. By controlling the polarization rotation angle of the PT-symmetric structure, two mutually coupled loops with balanced gain and loss are easily conceived, enabling the proposed AOMO to operate in the single mode. The optical-optical feedback modulation and oscillatory frequency selection are implemented using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, respectively. Benefiting from the SOA's cross-gain modulation, the SBS-based frequency selection, and the PT- symmetric breaking, dual-wavelength optical signals can be achieved with wideband tunability, very low beating phase noise, and high stability. In the experiment, we successfully generated an oscillating signal tuning from 3 to 30 GHz, and the measured phase noise reached - 103.2 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and - 90.69 dBc/Hz at 30 GHz at 10-kHz offset frequency.
Single-Cavity Bi-Color Laser Enabled by Optical Anti-Parity-Time Symmetry

Abstract:The exploration of quantum-inspired symmetries in optical systems has spawned promising physics and provided fertile ground for developing devices exhibiting exotic functionalities. Founded on the anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry that is enabled by both spatial and temporal interplay between gain and loss, we demonstrate theoretically and numerically bi-color lasing in a single micro-ring resonator with spatiotemporal modulation along its azimuthal direction. In contrast to conventional multi-mode lasers that have mixed-frequency output, our laser exhibits stable, demultiplexed, tunable bi-color emission at different output ports. Our APT-symmetry-based laser may point out a new route for realizing compact on-chip coherent multi-color light sources.

Abstract:Gain and loss balanced parity-time (PT) inversion symmetry has been achieved across multiple platforms including acoustics, electronics, and photonics. Tunable subwavelength asymmetric transmission based on PT symmetry breaking has attracted great interest. However, due to the diffraction limit, the geometric size of an optical PT symmetric system is much larger than the resonant wavelength, which limits the device miniaturization. Here, we theoretically studied a subwavelength optical PT symmetry breaking nanocircuit based on the similarity between a plasmonic system and an RLC circuit. Firstly, the asymmetric coupling of an input signal is observed by varying the coupling strength and gain-loss ratio between the nanocircuits. Furthermore, a subwavelength modulator is proposed by modulating the gain of the amplified nanocircuit. Notably, the modulation effect near the exceptional point is remarkable. Finally, we introduce a four-level atomic model modified by the Pauli exclusion principle to simulate the nonlinear dynamics of a PT symmetry broken laser. The asymmetric emission of a coherent laser is realized by full-wave simulation with a contrast of about 50. This subwavelength optical nanocircuit with broken PT symmetry is of great significance for realizing directional guided light, modulator and asymmetric-emission laser at subwavelength scales.

Abstract:A wavelength-tunable single-mode laser with a sub-kilohertz linewidth based on parity-time (PT)-symmetry is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed PT-symmetric laser is implemented based on a hybrid use of an optical fiber loop and a thermally tunable integrated microdisk resonator (MDR). The MDR, implemented based on the silicon-on-insulator, operates with the optical fiber loop to form two mutually coupled cavities with an identical geometry. By controlling two light waves passing through the two cavities, with one having a gain coefficient and the other a loss coefficient but with an identical magnitude, a PT-symmetric laser is implemented. Thanks to an ultranarrow passband of the cavity due to PT-symmetry, single-longitudinal mode lasing is achieved. The tuning of the wavelength is implemented by thermally tuning the MDR. The proposed PT-symmetric laser is demonstrated experimentally. Single-longitudinal mode lasing at a wavelength of around 1555 nm with a sub-kilohertz linewidth of 433 Hz is implemented. The lasing wavelength is continuously tunable from 1555.135 to 1555.887 nm with a tuning slope of 75.24 pm/°C.
A Zero-Threshold PT-Symmetric Polariton-Raman Laser

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry in a non-Hermitian framework can be harnessed for numerous applications in optics such as laser mode selection, non-reciprocal light propagation, polaritonic optical switches, and enhanced sensing. Here we show a zero-threshold Raman laser can be achieved in an anisotropic optical microcavity in the PT-symmetry broken phase via polarization selective optical pumping. A loss-gain mechanism between two polarized Stokes modes arises naturally via polarization dependent stimulated scattering and anisotropic Raman gain of the active layered material inside the microcavity. A microscopic theory of stimulated Raman process in anisotropic microcavity successfully explains our results at various temperatures and enabled us to predict the parameters of a proposed quantum PT-symmetric Hamiltonian. Our realization of the zero-threshold Raman laser and the proposed theory of stimulated Raman scattering in anisotropic microcavity can lead to future development of novel technologies such as efficient quantum frequency converters for applications in quantum photonics and information.

Abstract:By exploiting recent developments associated with coupled microcavities, we introduce the concept of the PT-symmetric phonon laser with balanced gain and loss. This is accomplished by introducing gain to one of the microcavities such that it balances the passive loss of the other. In the vicinity of the gain-loss balance, a strong nonlinear relation emerges between the intracavity-photon intensity and the input power. This then leads to a giant enhancement of both optical pressure and mechanical gain, resulting in a highly efficient phonon-lasing action. These results provide a promising approach for manipulating optomechanical systems through PT-symmetric concepts. Potential applications range from enhancing mechanical cooling to designing phonon-laser amplifiers.

Abstract:Effective manipulation of cavity resonant modes is crucial for emission control in laser physics and applications. Using the concept of parity-time symmetry to exploit the interplay between gain and loss (i.e., light amplification and absorption), we demonstrate a parity-time symmetry–breaking laser with resonant modes that can be controlled at will. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple competing modes, our parity-time microring laser exhibits intrinsic single-mode lasing regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. Thresholdless parity-time symmetry breaking due to the rotationally symmetric structure leads to stable single-mode operation with the selective whispering-gallery mode order. Exploration of parity-time symmetry in laser physics may open a door to next-generation optoelectronic devices for optical communications and computing.

Abstract:A stable and tunable parity-time (PT) symmetric single-longitudinal-mode fiber laser using a nonreciprocal Sagnac loop is proposed, which is experimentally and numerically demonstrated. The nonreciprocal Sagnac loop only including a 3-dB optical coupler (OC) and a polarization controller (PC) is incorporated into a fiber ring cavity, in which the nonreciprocal light transmission between frequency-degenerate clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) resonator modes is induced to suppress multiple-longitudinal-mode oscillation of the laser. The two light paths along the CW and CCW directions in the Sagnac loop are respectively defined as the gain and loss loops of the PT-symmetric laser, due to a controllable birefringence induced by the PC. By controlling the polarization states of the two light waves, the PT symmetry is broken when the gain coefficient is larger than the coupling coefficient, single-mode lasing is thus achieved. Experimental results show that the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of the single-mode lasing at 1550 nm is 43.0 dB, proving the great superiority of PT symmetry for lasing mode selection. By tuning an optical tunable band-pass filter incorporated into the fiber cavity, the wavelength of single-mode lasing varies from 1530 to 1560 nm, and their 3-dB Lorentzian linewidth varies within a range from 529 to 687 Hz. During a 30-min observation period, the variations of wavelength drift and OSNR of the single-mode lasing are less than 6 pm and 2.42 dB, respectively. The advantages of the proposed scheme are obvious, which include simple structure, low cost, simple operation, and good stability.

Abstract:Synthetic photonic materials exploiting the quantum concept of parity‐time (PT) symmetry led to an emerging photonic paradigm—non‐Hermitian photonics, which is revolutionizing the photonic sciences. The non‐Hermitian photonics dealing with the interplay between gain and loss in PT synthetic photonic material systems offers a versatile platform for advancing microlaser technology. However, current PT‐symmetric microcavity laser systems only manipulate imaginary parts of the refractive indices, suffering from limited laser spectral bandwidth. Here we propose an organic composite material system to synthesize reconfigurable PT‐symmetric microcavities with controllable complex refractive indices for realizing tunable single‐mode laser outputs. A grayscale electron‐beam direct writing technique is elaborately designed to process laser dye‐doped polymer films in one single step into microdisk cavities with periodic gain and loss distribution, which enables thresholdless PT‐symmetry breaking and single‐mode laser operation. Furthermore, organic photoisomerizable compounds are introduced to reconfigure the PT‐symmetric systems in real‐time by tailoring the real refractive index of the polymer microresonators, allowing for dynamically and continuously tunable single‐mode laser output. Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonics based on parity-time (PT) symmetry has been considered an effective solution to achieve mode selection for optical or microwave single-mode oscillation. A PT-symmetric system is usually implemented using two mutually coupled elements with identical geometry or a single element based on precise longitudinal refractive index modulation. In this study, we propose a novel scheme to achieve PT symmetry based on polarization mode manipulation in a single optical loop. By controlling the polarization states of two light waves that are propagating along the clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions in the single optical loop, two equivalent mutually-coupled loops with identical geometry and a balanced gain and loss are formed. Based on this concept, a wavelength-tunable single-mode fiber laser with a sub-kHz linewidth is realized. The tunability is achieved by thermally tuning the wavelength of an integrated microdisk resonator (MDR) incorporated in the optical loop. Experimental results show that a continuously tunable single-mode laser with a sub-kHz linewidth of 640 Hz and a wavelength tuning range from 1552.953 to 1554.147 nm is realized. The key advantages of using a single optical loop to implement PT symmetry include greatly simplified implementation and highly improved stability. The demonstration opens new avenues to implement high-performance PT-symmetric systems for applications in photonic and microwave photonic systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an anti-parity-time (anti -PT)-symmetric photonic lattice in thermal cesium atoms driven by two standing-wave laser fields. Such a lattice possesses anti -PT-symmetric susceptibility, of which the real (imaginary) part is an odd (even) function of position. By manipulating the intensities and phases of the two standing-wave fields, we experimentally observe unidirectional reflectionless propagation at the exceptional points. Our work provides a platform to study the scattering property of anti -PT-symmetric systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate single transverse-mode operation of broad-area coupled waveguide lasers enabled by parity-time (PT) symmetry. The PT symmetric laser operates on coupled waveguide cavities with electrically tuned gain and loss. Such counterintuitive waveguide design enables PT symmetric breaking, causing unique mode selection and ultimately enabling single mode operation. By electrically tuning the loss in the loss region of the coupled waveguide cavity, several different PT-symmetric regimes are analyzed theoretically, and the corresponding PT symmetric phase transition is demonstrated experimentally in the coupled waveguide laser.

Abstract:Realizing and manipulating parity-time ( PT ) symmetry in multidimensional systems are highly desirable for the exploration of nontrivial physics and the discovery of exotic phenomena in non-Hermitian systems. Finding non-Hermitian systems that still have all-real spectra even if their Hamiltonians possess only partial PT symmetry has also attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Here, we report the experimental observation of partial PT symmetry in a cesium atomic gas coupled with laser fields, where a two-dimensional partially PT -symmetric optical potential for a probe laser beam is created. A transition of the partial PT symmetry from an unbroken phase to a broken one is observed through changing the beam-waist ratio of the control and probe laser beams, and the domains of unbroken, broken, and nonpartial PT phases are also discriminated unambiguously. Moreover, we develop a technique to precisely determine the exceptional point location of the partial PT symmetry breaking by measuring the asymmetry degree of the probe-beam intensity distribution. The findings reported here pave the way for controlling multidimensional laser beams in non-Hermitian systems via laser-induced atomic coherence, and have potential applications for designing light amplifiers and attenuators in different parts of laser beams. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.053516 ©2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Semiconductor lasers, characterized by their high efficiency, small size, low weight, rich wavelength options, and direct electrical drive, have found widespread application in many fields, including military defense, medical aesthetics, industrial processing, and aerospace. The mode characteristics of lasers directly affect their output performance, including output power, beam quality, and spectral linewidth. Therefore, semiconductor lasers with high output power and beam quality are at the forefront of international research in semiconductor laser science. The novel parity–time (PT) symmetry mode-control method provides the ability to selectively modulate longitudinal modes to improve the spectral characteristics of lasers. Recently, it has gathered much attention for transverse modulation, enabling the output of fundamental transverse modes and improving the beam quality of lasers. This study begins with the basic principles of PT symmetry and provides a detailed introduction to the technical solutions and recent developments in single-mode semiconductor lasers based on PT symmetry. We categorize the different modulation methods, analyze their structures, and highlight their performance characteristics. Finally, this paper summarizes the research progress in PT-symmetric lasers and provides prospects for future development.
