Abstract:Through the analysis of phase and Mg content variation of samples obtained from different reaction system, we propose that the crystallization of calcium carbonate was mainly the aggregation-mediated process in the ethanol-water mixed solution and the solution-mediated process only in aqueous solution. Solvation of CO32- had obvious influence on the deposition of calcium carbonate. According to XRD and IR of deposits, it was considered that mixed phases of Mg calcite and a transitional phase which bears analogy to dolomite structure were formed. That is to say, magnesium calcite obtained from the mixed solution of ethanol-water demonstrated the dolomitization tendency.

Abstract:The influence of silk fibroin (SF) and magnesium ions (Mg2+) on calcium carbonate (CaCO3) bio-mineralization has been investigated. However, the morphology of CaCO3 controlled by the synergistic effect of SF and magnesium ions has not been reported in microbial mineralization systems. Here, we provide novel experimental insights into the role of SF and Mg2+ in the crystallization of CaCO3 in microbial mineralization systems. The morphology and crystallization of CaCO3 aggregates are affected by the self-assembly of SF molecules and the inhibition of Mg2+. This combination promoted the growth of a novel, rod-like superstructure of calcite crystals by aggregating/assembling behavior and crystallization kinetics. In addition, prism-shaped and hemispherical CaCO3 crystal superstructures were obtained in the presence of Mg2+ and SF, respectively. Furthermore, CaCO3 crystals with well-defined morphologies and polymorphs can be obtained by regulating the crystallization conditions (mineralization time and the amount of the additives). The above system has potential applications in the design and preparation of numerous inorganic materials with novel morphologies and specific textures.

Abstract:Crystallization of calcium carbonate under high concentration of magnesium (Mg/Ca > 5) follows a multistep pathway that is controlled by kinetics. There is a high concentration of calcium ions (supersaturated) that stably coexisted with the amorphous calcium carbonate and monohydrocalcite in our experiments. The authors propose that most of the calcium ions in the solution existed as the prenucleation cluster that had been stabilized by the hydrated magnesium ions. The dehydration free energy barrier of magnesium is higher than that of removing hydrated magnesium ions from the prenucleation cluster. Thereby, the prenucleation cluster slowly evolves into a more ordered structure by removing the hydrated magnesium ions, which is faster than the dehydration of magnesium. In addition, the crystallization via the agglomeration of the prenucleation clusters is one of the major pathways. However, before transforming into more ordered structure with less hydrated magnesium ions, prenucleation cluster was inactive in agglomeration. Thus, the oscillation of calcium concentration is observed in the continuous feeding crystallization reactor, due to the accumulation of active prenucleation cluster before rapid crystallization happened in the solution.

Abstract:The influence of Escherichia coliform secretion (E. coli-secretion) and melamine on the crystallization of calcium oxalate has been investigated in order to determine its role in morphological control and the effects on the kinetics of the calcium oxalate crystals. The crystals obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and thermal gravimetric analyzer. At the same time, conductivity meter and zeta potentiometer have been used to study the kinetic process of the crystal formation. The results show that, in the absence of E. coli-secretion, calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) was obtained, which is the most stable crystal form of calcium oxalate and the major component of urinary stones, while in the presence of the secretion, the obtained crystals were calcium oxalate dehydrate (COD) instead of COM. Simulation experiments under artificial urine circumstance further demonstrated the drastic effect of E. coli-secretion on the calcium oxalate dihydrate crystal form. Furthermore, the acceleration effect of melamine on the formation of stones was also studied. Additionally, a slight influence of melamine on the crystallization of calcium oxalate has been found for the first time. Thus, a method to inhibit stone has been found and is expected to provide important data for the development of the calculi treatment.

Abstract:The bacteria cultured in our lab were used in this experiment.We studied on the influence of bacteria system,bacterial bodies system and bacterial secretion system on kinetics of formation of CaCO3 crystalt and morphology of CaCO3 crystal.This work yielded that the concentration of bacteria solution increasing,induction time prolonged form 0 to 7.8min correspondingly.Bacteria bodies accelerated the crystallization process.Bacterial secretion restrained CaCO3 nucleation,and its induction time prolonged as different blended time with Ca2+.The result indicated that global CaCO3 crystals were induced by bacterial secretion,and there were nucleation sites —COO and CO in organic substances.Irregular surface of global CaCO3 was converted to regular one when the action enhanced between Ca2+ and nucleation sites.The results are useful for engineering application, such as repairing micro-crack on concrete surface,protecting old building surface and producing micron and nano calcium carbonate grains.

Abstract:Batch reactive crystallization of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) from ammonium carbonate ((NH4)(2)CO3) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4) was investigated in the presence of magnesium (Mg2+) ions. It was observed that Mg2+ ions partly inhibited the conversion of CaSO4 into CaCO3. When the content of Mg2+ was less than 2%, the reduction in conversion rate of CaSO4 was less than 2%, and the effect of Mg2+ ions could be ignored. Effect of impurity on crystallization kinetics of CaCO3, including the growth rate and nucleation rate, was investigated. The results revealed that when Mg2+ ions content was less than 1%, Mg2+ could promote the growth of CaCO3 and inhibit the nucleation process, which was favorable for the filtration of CaCO3.When the content of Mg2+ ions was greater than 1%, Mg2+ inhibited the growth of CaCO3, which resulted in explosion nucleation and led to a large number of particles in the solution, which was unfavorable for the filtration of CaCO3. Based on the Bransom model, the particle size distribution equations of CaCO3 were established. X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy images exhibited the existence of spherical vaterite of CaCO3 due to the reaction of CaSO4 with (NH4)(2)CO3 under the effect of Mg2+ ions, which was inconsistent with the results reported in the literatures.

Abstract:The effects of calcium ion on the structural properties of casein micelles in the course of heat treatment were synthetically examined by non-structure-invasive spectrometry. The hydrophobicity, reflected by extrinsic fluorescence (ANS fluorescence), was positively correlated with the concentration of the calcium ion, within the range of 0 to 12 mmol x L(-1). Meanwhile, the turbidity and stability of casein micelles also increased with the growth of calcium concentrations. However, opposite results were observed for hydrodynamic diameter and polydispersity index. Compared with the calcium ion, the calcium-chelator (citrate) has an opposite effect on the structural characteristics of casein micelles. Within the calcium concentrations range of 0 to 12 mmol x L(-1), the hydrophobicity, stability and turbidity were negatively correlated with the concentration of the calcium ion, nevertheless, opposite results were observed for hydrodynamic diameter and polydispersity index. All the results indicate that the calcium ion could be used to modify the structures of casein micelles during heat heatment.
Influence of Initial Ph on the Precipitation and Crystal Morphology of Calcium Carbonate Induced by Microbial Carbonic Anhydrase

Abstract:The dynamics of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation induced by microbial intracellular or extracellular carbonic anhydrase (CA) at initial pH 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 and 8.0 were investigated through the gaseous diffusion method. The results indicated that both the intracellular and extracellular CA could promote CaCO3 precipitation. The Ca2+ ions in the enzymatic systems at initial pH 8.0 were completely deposited at 48h, which were respectively 21h, 15h and 14h earlier compared with that at initial pH 6.0, pH 6.5 and pH 7.0, indicating that higher pH favored CaCO3 precipitation in the experimental pH range, and was beneficial to the catalytic action of microbial CA on CaCO3 precipitation. In addition, XRD analysis indicated that the CaCO3 precipitates were mainly calcite crystals in the presence of microbial CA. With increasing deposition time, the crystals gradually changed from prism shape to pyramid-like or irregular polyhedral shape based on FESEM analysis.

Abstract:Crystallization of calcium carbonate under high concentration of magnesium was studied. Interesting phenomena were observed. Approximately 80% of calcium ions stably existed in the solution up to 60 min after amorphous calcium carbonate was separated by centrifugation, and induction time was significantly affected by concentration and feeding rate of sodium carbonate when other operating conditions remained unchanged. Experiments and computer simulation have proved that prenucleation cluster exists during crystallization of calcium carbonate in solutions. This paper tried to figure out specific crystallization process of calcium carbonate under high concentration of magnesium, and to interpret unforeseen phenomena combining with the idea of prenucleation cluster. With regarding prenucleation cluster which can incorporate magnesium into its structure as amorphous calcium carbonate, most of the phenomena including significant influence of local mixing could be better understood. Prenucleation cluster played an important role in crystallization of calcium carbonate, which was related to the induction time, morphology and final product, thus more fundamental studies of prenucleation cluster structure and magnesium role in it should be done. Abstract:The influence of a range of soluble biological and related molecules on the crystallization of CaCO3 from aqueous supersaturated solution has been studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The efficacy of monofunctional additives to induce morphological changes increased with overall anionic charge. For anions of the same charge, the effect was reduced with decreasing partial charge density on the oxygen atoms of the ligand. Additional factors, such as the distance between ligands and conformation were important for multifunctional molecules. Orthophosphate, sulfate, various phosphonates, a polysaccharide associated with coccoliths of Emiliania huxleyi and alginate interacted specifically or pseudo-specifically with crystal faces approximately parallel to the c axis indicative of a bidentate binding motif. Phenyl phosphonate stabilized {01text-decoration:overline12} faces, inferring a tridentate interaction due to steric constraints. The bone protein, osteocalcin was found to be a non-specific inhibitor whereas a bone proteoglycan monomer and polygalacturonate had minimal morphological effect. A carboxylated hyperbranched polymer gave oriented nucleation owing to partial segregation of the macromolecule at the air/water interface. Fish anti-freeze glycopeptides and polyvinyl alcohol induced the precipitation of vaterite possibly by affecting the kinetics of cation dehydration. Multifunctional additives such as diphosphonates, the coccolith polysaccharide and alginate were also effective at promoting crystal aggregation.
Study on the Mechanism of Calcium Carbonate Formation Induced by Carbonate-Mineralization Microbe

Abstract:Carbonate-mineralization microbe (Bacillus) was chosen to study the influences of concentration of bacteria solution, bacteria body and bacterial secretion on calcium carbonate crystal formation. Results showed that the effect was stronger as the concentration of bacteria increasing; the crystals' form could not be affected by bacteria body only, but the bacterial secretion could induce the formation of polymorphic (e.g. spherical and spindle) metastable vaterite; inorganic-organic composite CaCO3 film formed under long-term effect by microbe. Based on the results of solution conductivity and FT-IR spectra of CaCO3 crystals, it could be concluded that there were electrostatic and coordination interaction between polar groups (COOH, C=O) in protein molecule and Ca2+. The results are useful for engineering application, such as repairing micro-crack on concrete surface, protecting old building surface and producing micron and nano calcium carbonate grains

Abstract:Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) particles with a diameter of about 300 nm were synthesized first. Then the as-prepared products were used to investigate the ACC transformation processes occurring on chitin film under the control of a water soluble matrix (WSM, extracted from aragonite pearls, China) or magnesium ions in aqueous solution. Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) together with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to characterize the crystallized calcium carbonate from ACC. The results demonstrate that the existence of a WSM and chitin film offers the ability to control the pure aragonite phase, leading to the formation of rod-like aragonite crystal aggregates. Comparatively, the collaborative effect of magnesium ions and chitin film not only induces the formation of the aragonite crystal aggregates, but also inhibits the transformation from ACC to Mg-calcite. Moreover, a possible transformation mechanism has been proposed and discussed.
The co-effect of collagen and magnesium ions on calcium carbonate biomineralization

Abstract:The process of calcium carbonate biomineralization in the solution containing collagen and magnesium ions was studied in this paper. The results were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect rules were obtained by the cooperation of collagen and magnesium ions in different concentration. The experiment results showed that in the presence of both collagen and magnesium ions, aragonite and vaterite were precipitated at low Mg/Ca ion concentration ratio, while only aragonite with regular spherical morphology was precipitated at high Mg/Ca ion concentration ratio. It indicated that collagen has a promotional effect on magnesium ions in controlling the polymorph of calcium carbonate crystal. A much wider range of calcium carbonate morphologies was observed in the presence of both collagen and magnesium ions. The experiments suggested that collagen acts in combination with magnesium ions to inhibit calcite crystal growth, while favoring the formation of aragonite crystals.

The mechanisms by which modifiers enable these shape-preserving transformations are poorly understood. We used in situ liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy to follow the evolution from amorphous calcium carbonate to calcite in the presence of additives. A combination of contrast analysis and infrared spectroscopy shows that Mg ions, which are widely present in seawater and biological fluids, alter the transformation pathway in a concentration-dependent manner. The ions bring excess (structural) water into the amorphous bulk so that a direct transformation is triggered by dehydration in the absence of morphological changes. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest Mg-incorporated water induces structural fluctuations, allowing transformation without the need to nucleate a separate crystal. Thus, the obtained calcite retains the original morphology of the amorphous state, biomimetically achieving the morphological control of crystals seen in biominerals.
Biomimetic Mineralization of Ca-Mg Carbonates: Relevance to Microbial Cells and Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Abstract:Research on Ca-Mg carbonate crystallization and phase transition regulated by microbial cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) is significant for carbon sequestration, remediation of polluted soil and water, and synthesis of functional biomaterials. This study focused on the mineralogical transformation from amorphism to crystal, and interaction among cells, EPS, and minerals. By tracing the law of mineral growth and morphological evolution, the influences of cells and EPS on mineral formation were investigated. The results revealed that calcification and the template of rod-shaped cells of strain HJ-1 were the basis for the formation of dumbbell-shaped particles, and directional aggregation and differential growth were the keys to the development and stability of dumbbells. Cell participation had a noticeable impact on mineral prototypes, instead of determining the polymorphism. EPS contributed to aragonite formation and stability. The acidic amino acids or proteins in EPS were likely to cause an increase in MgCO3 content in Mg-calcite. EPS promoted aggregation of particles and induced spherical formation. Exopolysaccharides and proteins were the main components of EPS that can affect carbonate mineralization. EPS could influence the morphology and polymorphism by providing nucleation sites, interacting with Mg2+, adsorbing or incorporating mineral lattices, and inducing particle aggregation.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation of amorphous calcium carbonate under high magnesium concentration (Mg/Ca = 6) via several novel methods. While feeding calcium chloride solution into the mixed solution of magnesium chloride and sodium carbonate, a large amount of calcium ions (>0.13 mol/L) stably coexisted with the amorphous calcium carbonate in the solution. The calcium concentration detected by the calcium ion selective electrode was proportional to the calcium concentration added. Surprisingly, the ratio of magnesium to calcium in the amorphous calcium carbonate was just 0.07, and the concentration of calcium continued to increase in the solution after the formation of the amorphous calcium carbonate. We propose that stable prenucleation cluster formed in the solution, which stably coexisted with the amorphous calcium carbonate because of the incorporation of hydrated magnesium ions. The high dehydration free energy barrier of magnesium ions led to its slow dehydration. Also, the hydroxide ion helped to bypass the high dehydration free energy barrier. Abstract:This work offers a response to how additives as magnesium and sulfate exert an influence on crystal habit of calcite and modify considerably its morphology. This is done using a reproducible system which gives a controlled crystallization of calcite without the use of templates and offers ideal conditions for the study of ions incorporation during the growing of calcite crystals. Magnesium and sulfate are a determinant key in CaCO3 mineralization. However, the works of the literature have failed to provide a clear understanding of how these ions influence the nucleation‐growth of CaCO3 precipitation. Our study uses an electrochemical method, having for principle to impose a dissolved oxygen reduction potential on gold (111) films. This technique that allows the exclusive and controlled crystallization of epitaxial calcite established an ideal system for the study of foreign ions influence. The polymorph, composition and morphology of crystals are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with X‐ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Raman spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the increase of calcium concentration in calcocarbonic pure solution enhances the nucleation and then the growth of calcite crystals without affecting their morphology and their orientation. However, the magnesium directly modifies the surface morphology of calcite as a consequence of Mg substitution to calcium ions and the inhibitive effect of magnesium is assured by an incorporation mechanism. In the matter of sulfate ions influence, the experimental results indicate that SO42− slows down the epitaxial calcite nucleation by substituting itself to carbonate ions preferentially in the center of the crystals facets causing an enlargement of the lattice parameter.

Abstract:Crystallization experiments of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the presence of different anionic surfactants are carried out by rapidly mixing CaCl2 with Na2CO3 in aqueous solutions. The selected anionic surfactants are sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), sodium dodecylsulfonate (DDS), and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), respectively. The concentration and the head group of the anionic surfactants intensively influence the crystalline phase and morphology of the precipitated crystals. When the concentration is as low as 0.05mM, the crystal particles obtained in the presence of all the investigated anionic surfactants are rhombohedral calcite crystals. As the surfactant concentration is increased to 0.5mM, vaterite crystals are produced in SDBS system, while for SDS and DDS systems, there is no obvious change both for the crystalline phase and morphology of CaCO3. As the surfactant concentration is further increased to as high as 5mM, vaterite particles are produced in SDBS system, and hollow-spherical calcite crystals obtained in the presence of SDS, whereas rhombohedral calcite crystals in DDS system. Possible formation mechanism of different CaCO3 polymorphs from different anionic surfactants solutions is proposed based on the experimental results.
