Abstract:A steerable parametric source is designed to steer an audio beam without mechanically rotating the source. To achieve this without the generation of grating lobes requires an ultrasonic array with interelement spacing that is less than half the wavelength of the carrier ultrasound because of the spatial Nyquist criterion. However, ultrasonic wavelengths are typically smaller than the size of an ultrasonic transducer and this generates grating lobes in the radiation pattern, which is known as the spatial aliasing effect. This work proposes a method to suppress sidelobes including these grating lobes by optimizing the position and weight coefficients of the array elements by using a sparse random array technique. This is achieved by using the peak sidelobe level as the objective function and the simulated annealing algorithm for the optimization. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate the sidelobe level can be effectively suppressed when the average interelement spacing is two wavelengths. It is also found that Westervelt directivity has a significant effect on the spatial aliasing, because it serves as a spatial filter on the product directivity of the ultrasound. Accordingly, the sidelobe suppression performance deteriorates at low audio frequencies and high ultrasound frequencies where Westervelt directivity tends to be broader. However, this deterioration in performance can be addressed by increasing the number of the array elements.

Abstract:A hybrid algorithm is introduced to synthesize the nonuniform symmetric linear antenna arrays in this paper. The array element positions and excitation coefficients of the antenna arrays are optimized by using Gray Wolf Algorithm (GWO) and Convex Optimization Algorithm (CO). In order to further reduce the sidelobe level, the linear antenna array is divided into several subarrays under the constraints of element number, aperture size and minimum adjacent element spacing. Array element positions, excitation coefficients of each subarray and the element number of each subarray are optimized simultaneously. Finally, the optimization results are compared with the results obtained by other literatures. It is obviously found that the method proposed in this paper can obtain lower sidelobe level under the same conditions. So, the effectiveness and feasibility of the algorithm proposed in this paper is proved.

Abstract:Array pattern synthesis with low sidelobe levels is widely used in practice. An effective way to incorporate sensor patterns in the design procedure is to use numerical optimization methods. However, the dimension of the optimization variables is very high for large-scale arrays, leading to high computational complexity. Fortunately, sensor arrays used in practice usually have symmetric structures that can be utilized to accelerate the optimization algorithms. This paper studies a fast pattern synthesis method by using the symmetry of array geometry. In this method, the problem of amplitude weighting is formulated as a second-order cone programming (SOCP) problem, in which the dynamic range of the weighting coefficients can also be taken into account. Then, by utilizing the symmetric property of array geometry, the dimension of the optimization problem as well as the number of constraints can be reduced significantly. As a consequence, the computational efficiency is greatly improved. Numerical experiments show that, for a uniform rectangular array (URA) with 1024 sensors, the computational efficiency is improved by a factor of 158, while for a uniform hexagonal array (UHA) with 1261 sensors, the improvement factor is 284.

Abstract:Purpose – The aim of this paper is to explore the potential of particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods for minimizing the sidelobe levels (SLL) and placing null at arbitrary angles of a nonlinear antenna array. Design/methodology/approach – An improved PSO algorithm is designed. Findings – The improved PSO method is an efficient and robust global optimizer for minimizing the SLL and placing null at arbitrary angles of a nonlinear antenna array. Originality/value – Some improvements, such as the design of some new formulae for both position and velocity updating, the introduction of an age variable, and the devise of an intensification searches using the cross entropy method, are proposed.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose an optimal subarray design method for wideband irregular subarrayed array with sidelobe cancellation (SLC). Firstly, we present the space-time adaptive SLC structure for wideband irregular subarrayed array. The main channel adopts the wideband beamforming method with module-level time delay and subarray-level phase-shifting, and the auxiliary channels are connected with multi-tap transverse filter banks to provide temporal degree of freedom. Considering the quasi-exact partition of the main array and the position constraints of the auxiliary elements, then we establish the optimal subarray design method to achieve the best interference cancellation performance, and use a two-step optimization method to get the results. The obtained subarray structure has better interference cancellation performance than the traditional method. The effectiveness and potential of the proposed method are verified by different numerical experiments.

Abstract:Unequally spaced array is usually characterized by higher side lobes. In order to decrease the side lobes of the array, a hybrid algorithm is presented in which genetic algorithm and convex optimization are combined to optimize the elements' positions and weight coefficients. Under the constraint of certain main lobe width, the resulted side lobes for a 25-element array over an aperture of 50lambda are limited to -13.86 dB, which is lower than those reported in literatures.

Abstract:Antenna arrays play an increasingly important role in modern wireless communication systems. However, how to effectively suppress and optimize the side lobe level (SLL) of antenna arrays is critical for communication performance and communication capabilities. To solve the antenna array optimization problem, a new intelligent optimization algorithm called sparrow search algorithm (SSA) and its modification are applied to the electromagnetics and antenna community for the first time in this paper. Firstly, aimed at the shortcomings of SSA, such as being easy to fall into local optimum and limited convergence speed, a novel modified algorithm combining a homogeneous chaotic system, adaptive inertia weight, and improved boundary constraint is proposed. Secondly, three types of benchmark test functions are calculated to verify the effectiveness of the modified algorithm. Then, the element positions and excitation amplitudes of three different design examples of the linear antenna array (LAA) are optimized. The numerical results indicate that, compared with the other six algorithms, the modified algorithm has more advantages in terms of convergence accuracy, convergence speed, and stability, whether it is calculating the benchmark test functions or reducing the maximum SLL of the LAA. Finally, the electromagnetic (EM) simulation results obtained by FEKO also show that it can achieve a satisfactory beam pattern performance in practical arrays.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved genetic algorithm assisted beamforming, which introduces several parameters to conveniently control the solution precision and search space. The performance of low sidelobe wide nulling and the convergence are discussed for a one-,dimensional linear antenna array. The simulation results show that the algorithm can efficiently give a wide nulling of 30dB and has good convergence. Compared with the results shown by some related literatures, this algorithm gives a better suppression onto the interference.

Abstract:Low sidelobe levels in scanning synthetic beams remain a problem for coincidence imaging array radar (CIAR) to achieve excellent anti-interference performance. In this communication, a sidelobe suppression method for the scanning synthetic beams is proposed. Firstly, the fundamental model of the synthetic beam scanning method is presented with the introduction of the directional matching filter. Subsequently, the covariance matrix of the excitation signals is optimized using a convex optimization algorithm. This optimization allows for uniform bunching of the average power pattern within a specific angle range and simultaneous sidelobes suppression of the scanning synthetic patterns. In addition to the partially correlated excitation signals without practical constraints, the excitation signals are synthesized using the alternating minimization algorithm when considering a constant modulus constraint. Finally, numerical simulations and experiments are conducted to validate the proposed sidelobe suppression method. The results demonstrate that the sidelobe levels of the synthetic patterns with varying steering angles can be reduced to below -19.5 dB.

Abstract:This article deals with the low-sidelobe shaped-beam pattern synthesis (SBPS) problem using two nonuniformly spaced subarray configurations, including amplitude and amplitude–phase subarray configurations. An optimization model is proposed for the SBPS problem to minimize the peak sidelobe level by jointly optimizing the subarray configuration and element excitations/positions. A typical advantage of the proposed model is to reduce the system control points while maintaining the benign array performance. However, the formulated problem is a mixed-integer nonconvex one, which makes it challenging. Besides, this problem cannot be directly solved due to the existence of coupling optimization variables. Thus, a set of auxiliary variables is introduced to move the coupling optimization variables into equality constraints. These equality constraints are converted into quadratic penalty forms and are added to the objective function. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed using the penalty-based optimization method, which solves the original problem by iteratively solving a series of subproblems based on the inexact block coordinate descent technique. Numerical examples with different beam patterns are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, an iterative procedure for the synthesis of sparse arrays radiating focused beampattern is presented. The proposed approach provides a signifcant reduction in the complexity of the beam forming network, which is fulfilled by reducing the number of antenna elements in the array. An iterative scheme is used where the prescribed pattern response in the mainlobe is cast as a multi-convex problem at each step that the nonconvex lower bound constraint is relaxed while including a reweighted l(1)-norm minimization based on the magnitudes of the elements. Thus, a sparse array with fewer elements (compared to other methods) and a better performance of beam pattern (e.g., narrower 3-dB beamwidth, lower maximum sidelobe level) is produced. The resulting sparse array is able to generate a steerable pencil beam, matching a given power mask and avoid to constraint the fitting of any a priori defined reference beam pattern. The practical array imperfections are also compensated in the optimization stage by using worst-case performance optimization technique. Examples concerning the design of linear and planar arrays show relevant savings of array elements with respect to conventional array techniques.

Abstract:In this article, the formulas to compute phased array scattering fields under oblique incidences are derived as the theoretical basis of scattering sidelobe level (SLL) reduction. Meanwhile, in order to improve antenna radiation performance, the way to compute and evaluate array impedance matching performance is proposed based on an equivalent network model. The accuracy and efficiency of the formulas applied to predict array scattering fields and reflection coefficients are well validated by numerical study. Furthermore, a microstrip phased array antenna with a tapered array shape and optimized element feed networks is designed. A modified particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to search the solution of feed networks to reduce monostatic scattering SLL and improve antenna impedance matching simultaneously, where the proposed fast prediction approaches are employed. The optimized phased array antenna features scattering SLL reduction by 8.8 dB in the concerned angular range of 10°–30° and in the operating band of 5.5–7.5 GHz against its conventional counterpart, with improved impedance matching and slightly higher gains. Eventually, the numerical results are well validated in experiments.

Abstract:This article presents a novel method to efficiently synthesize large-scale planar isophoric sparse arrays (ISAs), aiming to achieve low sidelobe levels (SLLs). This method tackles the challenge of layout optimization by framing it as a constrained least squares problem and iteratively refining the solution. To accelerate the synthesis process, two key strategies are implemented. Firstly, the method defines the objective function as minimizing the discrepancy between the resulting array pattern and an adaptive reference pattern. This innovative choice obviates the need for introducing numerous sidelobe constraints, streamlining the optimization problem significantly. Secondly, the method incorporates a redundancy elimination technique. This technique involves calculating the theoretical limits for the achievable minimum spacing and aperture, allowing for the selective retention of only the non-redundant positional constraints. This step further reduces the optimization’s computational complexity. Several numerical examples are conducted for different applications. Comparative studies with the iterative convex optimization method shows the proposed method’s efficiency advantages. Additionally, a full-wave analysis of a microstrip patch antenna array verifies the method’s effectiveness in real array cases.

Abstract:To cut down the sidelobe level of radiation pattern, a novel adaptive algorithm is proposed for electronic steering parasitic antenna. The composite objective function in this algorithm takes both directivity and sidelobe level of pattern into account, and the steepest gradient algorithm is selected to search the optimum value of reactive load. Simulations are carried out to validate the algorithm, simulated results show that the levels of sidelobe are both below -4 dB in different beamforming cases, and the front to back ratios are better than 10 dB.

Abstract:Low side lobe level (SLL) and forming nulls can help to realize high-frequency (HF) superdirective receive arrays. In this letter, we reformulate the problem of designing an HF superdirective receive array as a problem of pattern synthesis. Based on the adaptive array theory, we present a numerical pattern synthesis algorithm combined with the design of HF superdirective receive array. Compared with the existing methods for superdirective array design, new method has more advantages in suppressing interferences and clutter. To confirm the effectiveness of novel method, numerical simulations are conducted.

Abstract:An optimised synthesis method for designing an extreme sparse array with the minimum set of elements is proposed. The method is based on a cross-array configuration and a multi-frequency beamforming algorithm. The experimental results show that the extreme sparse array achieves a 98.9% element thinning compared with the fully sampled planar array and the generated beam pattern satisfies the presupposed constraints. This is much better than the results obtained in the previous literature.

Abstract:Low-sidelobe antenna arrays are widely used in the wireless systems for the anti-interference receiving. To achieve low sidelobe, the amplitudes of each array element follow a tapered distribution, which is provided by properly designed feeding networks. In this article, as a different feeding approach for low-sidelobe antenna array, the evanescent mode of a cutoff waveguide is engineered to generate a symmetric and exponential-decay distribution for array elements. To verify this strategy, an array of slots is transversely etched with equal spacing on a $4.67\lambda _{0}$ -length cutoff waveguide operating at its evanescent mode, achieving a sidelobe level (SLL) lower than −18.8 dB with a gain of 13.7 dBi through measurement, agreeing well with the simulations. Moreover, by optimizing the element spacing on the same cutoff waveguide, the antenna array achieves an extremely low SLL of −24.1 dB and a gain of 13.1 dBi. The proposed evanescent-mode waveguide enables low-sidelobe antenna arrays with the merits of simple structure, compact dimensions, and high aperture efficiency for potential applications in radar and communication systems.
Pattern Synthesis via Complex-Coefficient Weight Vector Orthogonal Decomposition--Part II: Robust Sidelobe Synthesis

Abstract:In this paper, the complex-coefficient weight vector orthogonal decomposition ($ \textrm{C}^2\textrm{-WORD} $) algorithm proposed in Part I of this two paper series is extended to robust sidelobe control and synthesis with steering vector mismatch. Assuming that the steering vector uncertainty is norm-bounded, we obtain the worst-case upper and lower boundaries of array response. Then, we devise a robust $ \textrm{C}^2\textrm{-WORD} $ algorithm to control the response of a sidelobe point by precisely adjusting its upper-boundary response level as desired. To enhance the practicality of the proposed robust $ \textrm{C}^2\textrm{-WORD} $ algorithm, we also present detailed analyses on how to determine the upper norm boundary of steering vector uncertainty under various mismatch circumstances. By applying the robust $ \textrm{C}^2\textrm{-WORD} $ algorithm iteratively, a robust sidelobe synthesis approach is developed. In this approach, the upper-boundary response is adjusted in a point-by-point manner by successively updating the weight vector. Contrary to the existing approaches, the devised robust $ \textrm{C}^2\textrm{-WORD} $ algorithm has an analytical expression and can work starting from an arbitrarily-specified weight vector. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness and good performance of the robust $ \textrm{C}^2\textrm{-WORD} $ algorithm.

A Novel Low-sidelobe-level Hemispherical Conformal Antenna Array

Abstract:A novel low-sidelobe-level hemispherical conformal antenna array is proposed in this paper. The layout of the proposed conformal array is inspired by the sunflower. Compared with the traditional spherical-planar array and spherical-circular array, the proposed conformal array can obtain lower maximum spatial SLLs without deteriorating the directivity coefficient of array. The simulation results show that the average maximum spatial sidelobe level can be reduced by more than 2dB for the whole scanning range. Furthermore, the direction coefficient decreases by only less than 2.5dB while the main beam direction of the proposed array scanning from 0 degrees to 90degrees, which has great potential compared with traditional planar array. Therefore, it is very promising for aircrafts, aerostats, missiles, and other platforms.
