Abstract:Vanadium sesquioxide, V2O3, is a prototypical metal-to-insulator system where, in temperature-dependent studies, the transition always coincides with a corundum-to-monoclinic structural transition. As a function of pressure, V2O3 follows the expected behavior of increased metallicity due to a larger bandwidth for pressures up to 12.5 GPa. Surprisingly, for higher pressures when the structure becomes unstable, the resistance starts to increase. Around 32.5 GPa at 300 K, we observe a novel pressure-induced corundum-to-monoclinic transition between two metallic phases, showing that the structural phase transition can be decoupled from the metal-insulator transition. Using x-ray Raman scattering, we find that screening effects, which are strong in the corundum phase, become weakened at high pressures. Theoretical calculations indicate that this can be related to a decrease in coherent quasiparticle strength, suggesting that the high-pressure phase is likely a critical correlated metal, on the verge of Mott-insulating behavior.
Phonon Instability and Pressure-Induced Isostructural Semiconductor-Semimetal Transition of Monoclinic VO2

Abstract:Recent experiments have revealed an intriguing pressure-induced isostructural transition of the low temperature monoclinic VO2 and hinted to the existence of a new metallization mechanism in this system. The physics behind this isostructural phase transition and the metallization remains unresolved. In this work, we show that the isostructural transition is a result of pressure-induced instability of a phonon mode that relates to a CaCl2-type of rotation of the oxygen octahedra, which alleviates, but does not completely remove, the dimerization and zigzagging arrangement of V atoms in the M1 phase. This phonon mode shows an increasing softening with pressure, ultimately leading to an isostructural phase transition characterized by the degree of the rotation of the oxygen octahedra. We also find that this phase transition is accompanied by an anisotropic compression, in excellent agreement with experiments. More interestingly, in addition to the experimentally identified M1' phase, we find a closely related M1 '' phase, which is nearly degenerate with the M1' phase. Unlike the M1' phase, which has a nearly pressure-independent electronic band gap, the gap of the M1 '' drops quickly at high pressures and vanishes at a theoretical pressure of about 40 GPa.

Abstract:A pressure-induced phase transition, associated with the formation of cation-cation bonding, occurs in V2O3 by combining synchrotron x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell and ab initio evolutionary calculations. The high-pressure phase has a monoclinic structure with a C2/c space group, and it is both energetically and dynamically stable at pressures above 47 GPa to at least 105 GPa. This phase transition can be viewed as a two-dimensional Peierls-like distortion, where the cation-cation dimer chains are connected along the c axis of the monoclinic cell. This finding provides insights into the interplay of electron correlation and lattice distortion in V2O3, and it may also help to understand novel properties of other early transition-metal oxides.
VO$_2$ under hydrostatic pressure: Isostructural phase transition close to a critical end-point

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of monoclinic VO$_2$ is revisited by a combination of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction on a single crystal under hydrostatic conditions at room temperature. A soft mode is observed up to P$_c$ = 13.9(1) GPa. At this pressure, an isostructural phase transition between two monoclinic phases M$_1$ and M$_1$' hinders this instability. The features of this transformation (no apparent volume jump) indicate that the compression at ambient temperature passes close to a critical point. An analysis based on the Landau theory of phase transitions gives a complete description of the P-T phase diagram. The M1' is characterized by spontaneous displacements of the oxygen sub-lattice without any strong modification of the VV dimers distances nor the twist angle of vanadium chains. The spontaneous displacements of oxygen and the spontaneous deformations of the ($b_{M1}$, $c_{M1}$) plane follow the same quadratic dependence with pressure and scales with spontaneous shifts of the Raman phonons located at 225, 260 and 310 cm$^{-1}$. Pressure-induced shifts of the Raman peaks allows for new assignment of several Raman modes. In particular, the A$_g$(1)+B$_g$(1) modes at 145 cm$^{-1}$ are identified as the vanadium displacive phonons. A second transformation in the metallic phase X, which is found triclinic (P$\bar1$) is observed starting at 32 GPa, with a wide coexistence region (up to 42 GPa). Upon decompression, phase X transforms, between 20 GPa and 3 GPa, to another phase that is neither the M$_1$' nor M$_1$ phase. The structural transitions identified under pressure match with all the previously reported electronic modifications confirming that lattice and electronic degrees of freedom are closely coupled in this correlated material.

Abstract:In correlated systems, intermediate states usually appear transiently across phase transitions even at the femtosecond scale. It therefore remains an open question how to determine these intermediate states-a critical issue for understanding the origin of their correlated behaviour. Here we report a surface coordination route to successfully stabilize and directly image an intermediate state in the metal-insulator transition of vanadium dioxide. As a prototype metal-insulator transition material, we capture an unusual metal-like monoclinic phase at room temperature that has long been predicted. Coordinate bonding of L-ascorbic acid molecules with vanadium dioxide nanobeams induces charge-carrier density reorganization and stabilizes metallic monoclinic vanadium dioxide, unravelling orbital-selective Mott correlation for gap opening of the vanadium dioxide metal-insulator transition. Our study contributes to completing phase-evolution pathways in the metal-insulator transition process, and we anticipate that coordination chemistry may be a powerful tool for engineering properties of low-dimensional correlated solids.

Abstract:The pressure-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition of PbTiO3 is investigated in the pressure range of −5 to 35GPa using the density-functional theory with the local density approximation. The spontaneous polarization and spontaneous strain, calculated as the order parameters, are found to decrease abruptly at 32GPa, while the volume of the unit cell to decrease continuously, displaying a non-purely first-order character consistent with the experimental results. The structural explanation for the crossover in the order of the phase transition in PbTiO3 (from first to second order) is generally discussed in terms of the bonding structure.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on the electronic properties and crystal structure in amixed spinel ferrite Zn0.2Mg0.8Fe2O4 was studied for the first time up to 48 GPa at room temperature using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements. The sample was cubic (spinel-type Fd (3) over bar 3m) at ambient pressure and underwent a pressure-induced structural transition to an orthorhombic phase (CaTi2O4-type Bbmm) at 21GPa. This structural transformation corresponded to a first-order phase transition that involved 7.5% molar volume shrinkage. The onset of the Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) around 20 GPa was due to a spin crossover mechanism that led to the Fe3+ magnetic moment collapse. All the Raman modes disappeared at high pressures, which supported metallization. Analysis of structural and electrical transport measurements showed a simultaneous volume collapse and sharp IMT within a narrow pressure range. The orthorhombic high-pressure phase was found to have a higher conductivity than the cubic phase. The pressure dependence of the conductivity supported the metallic behavior of the high-pressure phase.

Abstract:The complexity of strongly correlated electron physics in vanadium dioxide is exemplified as its rich phase diagrams of all kinds, which in turn shed light on the mechanisms behind its various phase transitions. In this work, we map out the hydrostatic pressure - temperature phase diagram of vanadium dioxide nanobeams by independently varying pressure and temperature with a diamond anvil cell. In addition to the well-known insulating M1 (monoclinic) and metallic R (tetragonal) phases, the diagram identifies the existence at high pressures of the insulating M1' (monoclinic, more conductive than M1) phase, and two metallic phases of X (monoclinic) and O (orthorhombic, at high temperature only). Systematic optical and electrical measurements combined with density functional calculations allow us to delineate their phase boundaries as well as reveal some basic features of the transitions.

Abstract:The multiferroic material Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 exhibits a high resistivity arising from the orbital electrons localized around the manganese ions, which hinders its potential applications. Previous studies indicated that the resistivity of Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 was influenced by its crystal structure and the distribution of Mn ions. Consequently, pressure-induced structural change are expected to represent a viable method for tuning the resistivity and other properties of this compound. In the present study, the pressure effect on the resistivity of Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 was investigated up to 42 GPa. Furthermore, the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques, along with the density functional theory calculations were employed to study the crystal structure evolution of Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 under pressure. The results demonstrate an electronic semiconductor-metal phase transition in Pb3Mn7O15, 3 Mn 7 O 15 , accompanying an irreversible orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition. Additionally, within the orthorhombic phase, an iso-structural phase transition is observed, originating from the magnetic moments collapse of manganese cations. This study provides compelling evidence that high-pressure processing can be employed to modulate the crystal structure and functional properties of multifunctional materials.

Abstract:A phase transition was observed at 63-69 GPa and room temperature in vanadium with synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The transition is characterized as a rhombohedral lattice distortion of the body-centered-cubic vanadium without a discontinuity in the pressure-volume data, thus representing a novel type of transition that has never been observed in elements. Instead of driven by the conventional s-d electronic transition mechanism, the phase transition could be associated with the softening of C-44 trigonal elasticity tensor that originates from the combination of Fermi surface nesting, band Jahn-Teller distortion, and electronic topological transition.

Abstract:Weinvestigated the optical properties and structural phase transitions of W-doped VO2(R) nanoparticles under pressure based on in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The structural transition sequence follows VO2(R)-VO2(CaCl2- type)-VO2(Mx) and VO2(Mx)-VO2(Mx') within metallic phases, in compression and decompression processes, respectively, demonstrating that the structural transition can be decoupled from the metal-insulator transition (MIT). VO2(R) and VO2(CaCl2-type) exhibit expected behavior of increased metallicity under pressure; surprisingly, VO2(Mx) shows gradually decreased metallicity with increasing pressure and VO2(Mx') is still metallic under ambient conditions. We find that the reduced metallicity of VO2(Mx) is attributed to W-doping induced local structure distortion in the highpressure region, while the metallic properties of VO2(Mx') are associated with the enhancement of electron concentration due to the presence of W donors, which shifted the Fermi level toward the conduction band. The present results demonstrate that the structural transition is not the key factor in driving the metal-insulator transition, and provide an effective method for inducing MIT in VO2(Mx').

Abstract:The complex interplay between several active degrees of freedom (charge, lattice, orbtial and spin order) is thought to determine the electronic properties of many oxides, but the respective role of the various contributions is often extremely difficult to determine. Vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$) is a particularly notorious example. Here we report on combined ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) and infrared transmissivity experiments in which we directly watch and separate the lattice and charge density reorganizations that are associated with the optically-induced semiconductor-metal transition (SMT) in VO$_2$. These studies have uncovered a previously unreported photoinduced transition to a metastable state with the periodic lattice distortion (PLD) characteristic of the insulator intact, but differing by a 1D rearrangement of charge density along the octahedrally coordinated vanadium dimer chains and a transition to metal-like mid IR optical properties. The results demonstrate that UED is capable of following details of both lattice and electronic structural dynamics on the ultrafast timescale.

Abstract:The spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 provides a fascinating playground to explore insulator-metal transition driven by intertwined charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we report high pressure electric resistance and resonant inelastic x ray scattering measurements on single crystal Sr3Ir2O7 up to 63 65 GPa at 300 K. The material becomes a confined metal at 59.5 GPa, showing metallicity in the ab plane but an insulating behavior along the c axis. Such an unusual phenomenon resembles the strange metal phase in cuprate superconductors. Since there is no sign of the collapse of spin orbit or Coulomb interactions in x-ray measurements, this novel insulator metal transition is potentially driven by a first-order structural change at nearby pressures. Our discovery points to a new approach for synthesizing functional materials.
Phase Transition and Metallization of Orpiment by Raman Spectroscopy, Electrical Conductivity and Theoretical Calculation under High Pressure

Abstract:The structural, vibrational, and electronic characteristics in orpiment were performed in the diamond anvil cell (DAC), combined with a series of experimental and theoretical research, including Raman spectroscopy, impedance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and first-principles theoretical calculations. The isostructural phase transition at ~25.0 GPa was manifested as noticeable changes in the compressibility, bond lengths, and slope of the conductivity, as well as in a continuous change in the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume. Furthermore, a pressure-induced metallization occurred at ~42.0 GPa, accompanied by reversible electrical conductivity. We also determined the metallicity of orpiment at 45.0 GPa by first-principles theoretical calculations, and the results were in good agreement with the results of the temperature-dependent conductivity measurements. The HRTEM and AFM images of the recovered sample confirmed that orpiment remains in the crystalline phase with an intact layered structure and available crystal-shaped clusters. These high-pressure behaviors of orpiment present some crucial information on the structural phase transition, metallization, amorphization and superconductivity for the A2B3-type of engineering materials at high pressure.

Unusual Mott transition in multiferroic PbCrO3.

Abstract:The Mott insulator in correlated electron systems arises from classical Coulomb repulsion between carriers to provide a powerful force for electron localization. Turning such an insulator into a metal, the so-called Mott transition, is commonly achieved by "bandwidth" control or "band filling." However, both mechanisms deviate from the original concept of Mott, which attributes such a transition to the screening of Coulomb potential and associated lattice contraction. Here, we report a pressure-induced isostructural Mott transition in cubic perovskite PbCrO3. At the transition pressure of ∼3 GPa, PbCrO3 exhibits significant collapse in both lattice volume and Coulomb potential. Concurrent with the collapse, it transforms from a hybrid multiferroic insulator to a metal. For the first time to our knowledge, these findings validate the scenario conceived by Mott. Close to the Mott criticality at ∼300 K, fluctuations of the lattice and charge give rise to elastic anomalies and Laudau critical behaviors resembling the classic liquid-gas transition. The anomalously large lattice volume and Coulomb potential in the low-pressure insulating phase are largely associated with the ferroelectric distortion, which is substantially suppressed at high pressures, leading to the first-order phase transition without symmetry breaking.
Pressure-enhanced Interplay Between Lattice, Spin, and Charge in the Mixed Perovskite La2FeMnO6

Abstract:Spin crossover plays a central role in the structural instability, net magnetic moment modification, metallization, and even in superconductivity in corresponding materials. Most reports on the pressure-induced spin crossover with a large volume collapse have so far focused on compounds with a single transition metal. Here we report a comprehensive high-pressure investigation of a mixed Fe-Mn perovskite La2FeMnO6. Under pressure, the strong coupling between Fe andMn leads to a combined valence/spin transition: Fe3+(S = 5/2) -> Fe2+(S = 0) and Mn3+(S = 2) -> Mn4+(S = 3/2), with an isostructural phase transition. The spin transitions of both Fe and Mn are offset by similar to 20 GPa of the onset pressure, and the lattice collapse occurs in between. Interestingly, Fe3+ ion shows an abnormal behavior when it reaches a lower valence state (Fe2+) accompanied by a +0.5 eV energy shift in the Fe K-absorption edge at 15 GPa. This process is associated with the charge-spin-orbital state transition from high spin Fe3+ to low spin Fe2+, caused by the significantly enhanced t(2g)-e(g) crystal field splitting in the compressed lattice under high pressure. Density functional theory calculations confirm the energy preference of the high-pressure state with charge redistribution accompanied by spin state transition of Fe ions. Moreover, La2FeMnO6 maintains semiconductor behaviors even when the pressure reached 144.5 GPa as evidenced by the electrical transport measurements, despite the huge resistivity decreasing seven orders of magnitude compared with that at ambient pressure. The investigation carried out here demonstrates high flexibility of double perovskites and their good potentials for optimizing the functionality of these materials.

Abstract:The influence of external pressure on the structural properties of manganese monophosphides (MnP) at room temperature has been studied using in situ angle dispersive synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (AD-XRD) with a diamond anvil cell. The crystal structure of MnP is stable between 0 to 15 GPa. However, the compressibility of b-axis is much larger than those of a- and c-axes. From this result we suggested that the occurrence of superconductivity in MnP was induced by suppression of the long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state rather than a structural phase transition. Furthermore, the present experimental results show that the Pnma phase of MnP undergoes a pressure-induced structural phase transition at similar to 15.0 GPa. This finding lighted up-to-date understanding of the common prototype B31 structure (Strukturbericht Designation: B31) in transition metal monophosphides. No additional structural phase transition was observed up to 35.1 GPa (Run 1) and 40.2 GPa (Run 2) from the present AD-XRD results. With an extensive crystal structure searching and ab initio calculations, we predict that MnP underwent two pressure-induced structural phase transitions of Pnma -> P2(1)3 and P2(1)3 -> Pm-3m (CsCl-type) at 55.0 and 92.0 GPa, respectively. The structural stability and the electronic structures of manganese monophosphides under high pressure are also briefly discussed.
Pressure Enhanced Interplay among Lattice, Spin and Charge in La2FeMnO6 Mixed Perovskite

Abstract:Spin crossover plays a central role in the structural instability, net magnetic moment modification, metallization, and even in superconductivity in corresponding materials. Most reports on the pressure-induced spin crossover with a large volume collapse so far focused on compounds with single transition metal. Here we report a comprehensive high-pressure investigation of a mixed Fe-Mn perovskite La2FeMnO6. Under pressure, the strong coupling between Fe and Mn leads to a combined valence/spin transition: Fe3+(S = 5/2) to Fe2+(S = 0) and Mn3+(S = 2) to Mn4+(S = 3/2), with an isostructural phase transition. The spin transitions of both Fe and Mn are offset by 20 GPa of the onset pressure, and the lattice collapse occurs in between. Interestingly, Fe3+ ion shows an abnormal behavior when it reaches a lower valence state (Fe2+) accompanied by a + 0.5 eV energy shift in Fe K-absorption edge at 15 GPa. This process is associated with the charge-spin-orbital state transition from high spin Fe3+ to low spin Fe2+, caused by the significantly enhanced t2g-eg crystal field splitting in the compressed lattice under high pressure. Density Functional Theory calculations confirm the energy preference of the high-pressure state with charge redistribution accompanied by spin state transition of Fe ions. Moreover, La2FeMnO6 maintains semiconductor behaviors even when the pressure reached 144.5 GPa as evidenced by the electrical transport measurements, despite the huge resistivity decreasing 7 orders of magnitude compared with that at ambient pressure. The investigation carried out here demonstrates high flexibility of double perovskites and their good potentials for optimizing the functionality of these materials.

Abstract:Many AB2O4 spinels transform to post-spinel structures without decomposition.Three structures of CaMn2O4 (Pmab), CaFe2O4 (Pnam) and CaTi2O4 (Bbmm) have been reported as post-spinel phases.Structure studies were conducted under high pressure using SR.CaMn2O4 transforms to CaTi2O4 type structure at about 30GPa.MnO6 octahedron is distorted by the Jahn-Teller effect induced from Mn 3+ (3d4) in the octahedral site.X-ray emission study at APS has been executed to discloses high-low spin transition of CaMn2O4 up to 100GPa.The spin transition gradually proceeds from 50GPa and then mixed spin states at 80GPa.Low-spin state is confirmed at 85GPa.A new phase is found by powder diffraction at 82 GPa.This structure (Pnam) is produced via martensic transformation by displacing atoms in every three layers perpendicular to the c-axis.Four independent sites of Mn atoms yield the different spin transition pressures.PbTiO3 tetragonal perovskite structure (P4mm) at ambient conditions transforms cubic (Pm3m) at about 12GPa, which induces the transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric.Electron density distribution analysis is performed by maximum entropy method (MEM) using single-crystal diffraction intensities up to 12GPa taken at PF and up to 35GPa by two-circle diffractometer with IP at APS. Pressure dependence of the static dipole moment is elucidated by charge density analysis.MEM provides the split atom model of Ti and oxygen atoms in the direction to the c-axis and in the cubic phase no more splitting was observed.The split is generated from the statistical distribution of atoms or domain structures.The split becomes gradually smaller with increasing pressure.This is an intrinsic phenomenon in PbTiO3.Polarization in PbTiO3 is partly canceled.

Abstract:The insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) in vanadium dioxide (VO2) has garnered extensive attention for its potential applications in ultrafast switches, neuronal network architectures, and storage technologies. However, a significant controversy persists regarding the formation of the IMT, specifically concerning whether a complete structural phase transition from monoclinic (M1) to rutile (R) phase is necessary. Here we employ the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) to track the dynamic evolution of atomic and electronic structures in photoexcited VO2, revealing the emergence of a long-lived monoclinic metal phase (MM) under low electronic excitation. The emergence of the metal phase in the monoclinic structure originates from the dissociation of the local V-V dimer, driven by the self-trapped and self-amplified dynamics of photoexcited holes, rather than by a pure electron-electron correction. On the other hand, the M1-to-R phase transition does appear at higher electronic excitation. Our findings validate the existence of MM phase and provide a comprehensive picture of the IMT in photoexcited VO2.
