Abstract:It is of great research significance to prepare a new shear thickening fluid (STF) with simple process, remarkable thickening effect and excellent impact resistance from the properties of the particles. Inspired by the shear thickening mechanism, nano-silica particle clusters (SPC) with different morphological structures were prepared by the reaction of amino-modified silica with polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE), and the structure models of particle clusters were designed through theoretical analysis. The structure of SPC was affected by the degree of amination modification and the molecular weight of PEGDGE, which was analyzed by DLS and TEM. The shear thickening behavior of the fluid was evaluated by steady-state rheology and dynamic-state rheology analysis. The shear thickening behavior of the fluid composed of SPC also changed greatly with the influence of the degree of amination modification and the molecular weight of PEGDGE. In addition, compared with the STF contained original silica, the STF contained SPC could produce faster and stronger shear thickening response. Therefore, silica particle clusters can not only be a promising candidate for the preparation of high-performance shear thickening fluids, but also can be better applied to industrial and scientific fields such as impact protection and shock absorption.

Abstract:In this work, shear thickening (ST) performance of a novel suspension of porous silica nanoparticles was systematically studied. The porous silica nanoparticles which were synthesized by using CTAB as a pore-forming agent were dispersed into ethylene glycol to form shear thickening fluid (STF). Both the steady and oscillatory shear rheological properties of the STF were characterized. The STF showed distinct ST effects when the concentration of the porous nanoparticles was only 42.5 wt%. This value was much lower than the previously reported STF prepared by non-porous particles. The viscosity increased from 0.80 to 14.3 Pa s by increasing the shear rate from 0.1 to 49.4 s−1, while a noticeable overall downward trend with a high initial viscosity was found in the prepared suspension of non-porous silica. The results indicated that porous nature of the silica nanoparticles could remarkably influence the ST effect. A possible enhancing mechanism was proposed and it was found that the difference of macroscopic rheology behavior was mainly according to interfacial interaction between the porous silica nanoparticles. This work provided valuable information for understanding the relationship between the porous characteristics and ST behavior.
Effects of nano-fumed silica and carbonyl iron powder of different particle sizes on the rheological properties of shear thickening fluids

Abstract:In this study, shear thickening fluid (STF) samples with different mass fractions were prepared by uniformly dispersing high-purity spherical silica powder in the polyethylene glycol (PEG) medium using the ball milling process. The influence of nano-particles on the shear and compression thickening effects of the STF dispersion system was investigated through the addition of fumed silica. Furthermore, the ball milled carbonyl iron powders (CIPs) with different particle sizes were dispersed uniformly in the STFs to prepare magnetorheological-STF (MR-STF) samples. The rheological properties of the developed STF and MR-STF samples were studied experimentally through a rheometer, and the results show that a lower temperature leads to a more obvious shear thickening effect of the STFs and that a smaller critical shear rate value promotes this effect. A higher content of silica powder also causes a more significant shear thickening effect of the STFs. Moreover, the addition of nano-fumed silica can significantly enhance the shear thickening effect, and the transition from continuous to discontinuous STFs can be realized by increasing the fumed silica mass fraction. Similarly, higher contents of silica powder and nano-fumed silica in the compression mode result in a more obvious thickening effect. In addition, the size of the CIP particles and the magnetic field strength directly affect the shear thickening effect of the MR-STFs. Specifically, under the same ferromagnetic particle mass fraction, the larger the CIP particles, the higher the applied magnetic induction intensity. Although a significant MR effect can be obtained, a certain inhibitory weakening effect is produced for the shear thickening behavior of the MR-STFs. Finally, considering the results in combination with the hydro-clustering and jamming theories, a mechanism was established to reveal the influence of different silica powder contents and nano-fumed silica fillings on the shear and compression thickening effects of STFs. Besides, a mechanism was proposed for the inhibition of the shear thickening effect of the MR-STFs by the ordered structures formed by CIP particles of different sizes in a magnetic field.

Abstract:Here, a novel method to prepare high performance shear thickening fluids (STFs) by dispersing calcinated silica microspheres into ethylene glycol is reported. The silica particles were prepared by hydrolyzing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and then they were treated under high temperature to remove the physically adsorbed water and the -OH groups on the surfaces. The influence of the temperature on the rheological properties of the final STFs was investigated and the STF prepared under the optimum temperature exhibited the best ST effects. A possible mechanism was proposed and it was found that a proper solvation layer adsorbed on the silica surface resulted in lower critical shear rate and higher shear thickening viscosity.

Abstract:Shear thickening fluids (STFs) have attracted increasing attention as smart materials with unique rheological properties. However, the preparation of STFs usually relies on a composite system of spherical nanoparticles with polyethylene glycol. In this work, novel multi-phase STFs (ILSTFs) were prepared in an ionic liquid by incorporating nanosized SiO 2 and rod-shaped calcium metasilicate (CaSiO 3 ) particles as a dispersed phase. Compared to traditional STFs, ILSTFs demonstrate excellent thermal stability. Rheological tests indicate that ILSTFs exhibit continuous shear thickening behavior, resulting in excellent energy absorption and impact wear resistance. In addition, ILSTFs can serve as a new type of lubricant. The tribological properties and impact resistance of ILSTFs were highly correlated with the shear thickening effect, with the multi-phase ILSTF system with CaSiO 3 demonstrating superior impact wear resistance compared to the single-phase system. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) is further utilized to investigate the local damage evolution and energy absorption rate of STF under impact loading, providing insights into the underlying mechanism. This ionic liquid-based STF holds promise for applications as a flexible filling component in the fields of lubrication technology and impact protection structures.

Abstract:Shear thickening fluids (STFs) based on additives with different concentrations and molecular chain lengths were investigated. STF samples were prepared with silica and additive dispersed in polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, where three types of additives with different molecular chain lengths of PEG4000, PEG6000, and PEG10000 were used. For PEG10000, different concentrations, including 0, 1%, 3%, and 5%, were selected to study the influences of additive concentrations. Rheological properties of the samples were measured with a rheometer. The results show that the shear thickening effect was significantly enhanced with the increase of the concentration and the molecular chain length of additives. The mechanism of enhancement was quantitatively explained with the formation of large particles clusters.

Abstract:A novel kind of shear thickening fluid (STF) was developed via dispersing poly(styrene-acrylic acid) (PS-AA) nanospheres into ethylene glycol (EG). By varying the structure characteristics of the PS-AA particles, STFs with different rheological properties can be obtained. Firstly, the influence of the styrene/acrylic acid ratio on the PS-AA nanospheres was investigated. It was found that the higher ratio often led to the better shear thickening (ST) effects and under the optimum condition the maximum viscosity of the STF could reach to 152Pa s, while the ST effects decreased under further increasing the monomer ratio. Then, the divinyl benzene (DVB) was introduced to increase the cross-link density of the PS-AA. In comparison with the non-cross-link PS-AA nanospheres, the poly(styrene-acrylic acid-divinyl benzene) (PS-AA-DVB) based STFs exhibited much higher ST effects and the maximum viscosity was up to 385Pas when the DVB was only increased to 0.3%. In combination of the rheological properties and the structure characterization, a possible mechanism for the ST behavior was proposed and the influence of the particles' characteristics on the mechanical performance of the PS-AA based STF was carefully analyzed.

Abstract:Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have received an increasing attention as lubricants owing to their intriguing properties such as tunable viscosity, high thermal stability, low emissions, nonflammability, and corrosion resistance. In this work, we investigate how the incorporation of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) functionalized silica nanoparticles (NPs) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (trifluoromethysulfony)imide influences the tribological properties and rheological properties of IL under boundary lubrication and elastohydrodynamic conditions, respectively. It was found that the coefficient of friction was depended on the concentration of NPs in IL with a concave upward functional trend with a minimum at 0.05 wt.% for bare silica NPs and at 0.10 wt.% for OTS-functionalized silica NPs. For steel–steel sliding contact, the presence of functionalized NPs in IL at the optimum concentration decreased the coefficient of friction by 37% compared to IL and 17% compared to IL with bare silica NPs. While IL with bare NPs demonstrated a shear thinning behavior for all concentrations, IL with functionalized NPs showed a Newtonian behavior at low concentrations and shear thinning behavior at high concentrations. Overall, this study provides new insights into the antifriction and antiwear additives for lubrication systems involving ILs.
Shear Dependent Electrical Property of Conductive Shear Thickening Fluid

Abstract:Conductive shear thickening fluid (C-STF) consisting of SiO2 particles, carbon nanotube (CNT) and ethyl glycol (EG) was developed. The shear thickening effect of C-STF was strengthened with the increasing CNT mass fraction. Different from the traditional shear thickening fluid (STF), the as-prepared C-STF showed unique electrical property due to presence of the conductive doping CNT. The initial resistance of C-STF varied from 94 kΩ to 18 kΩ at different CNT mass fractions (0.1wt%, 0.2wt%, 0.3wt% and 0.4wt%). Moreover, the resistance could be critically decreased once accounting the unexpected shear and the decrements reached to as high as 90%. Meanwhile, the shear dependent impedance spectroscopies at different shear rates were analyzed and an equivalent circuit model was proposed to investigate the microstructure dependent electrical property. This phenomenon not only gave much valuable information for understanding the detail shear thickening mechanism but also broadened their application in anti-impact sensor.

Abstract:A novel shear thickening fluid (Z-STF) was developed via dispersing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles into ethylene glycol (EG). By varying the morphologies of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles, the rheological properties of the Z-STF were controlled. In comparison to the traditional SiO2 based STF (S-STF), the Z-STF showed a superior shear thickening behavior because of the porous nature and polyhedron morphology of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles. Firstly, the EG molecule could be incorporated into the micropores of ZIF-8, which increased the volume fraction of the dispersing phases and enhanced the hydrodynamic forces between the particles. Secondly, the poor relative sliding of truncated cubic particles led to easily form a more robust structure of frictional contact network in truncated cube ZIF-8 based STF (TCZ-STF) than in truncated rhombic dodecahedron ZIF-8 based STF (TRDZ-STF) and S-STF, thus the TCZ-STF showed smaller critical shear rates and higher maximum viscosities. This work provides a morphology turning method to design high performance STF and supplies a good understanding of the relationship between ST behavior and particles' structure. In view of the easy preparation and wonderful mechanical properties, the Z-STF possessed broad application in damping, body armor, and safe energy. (C) 2019 The Society of Powder Technology Japan. Study on Magnetorheological Shear Thickening Fluid

Abstract:In this paper, a magnetic-field-controlled and speed-activated magnetorheological shear thickening fluid (MRSTF) is presented. We fabricated a kind of shear thickening fluid (STF) which was composed of nanosize silica particles suspended in a solvent, ethylene glycol, at high concentrations. Then the micron-size carbonyl iron particles with different volume fractions were added to the STF to fabricate the MRSTF. Their dynamic properties in different shear strain rates and magnetic fields were tested by using a rheometer. The suspension shows an abrupt increase in complex viscosity beyond a critical dynamic shear rate and a magnetic-field-controllable characteristic, as well as being reversible.
Rheological properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silica shear thickening fluid suspensions

Abstract:In this study, the rheological properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silica shear thickening fluid suspensions (MWCNT/SiO2-STFs) with different concentrations were investigated. Through scanning electron microscopy, it was found that the MWCNTs had a strong adsorption on silica nanoparticles, and a "new particle group" containing MWCNTs was formed in the samples. The rheological results demonstrate that MWCNT/SiO2-STFs have significant shear thinning and shear thickening phenomena, and when the mass fraction of MWCNTs is 0.8%, the STFs have the best shear thickening performance; the viscosity increases by 191% while the critical shear rate decreases by 60.19%. The results also reveal that the rheological property of MWCNT/SiO2-STFs is effectively improved by increasing the plate spacing, particularly when their mass fraction is low. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity of MWCNT/SiO2-STFs is still dominated by the silica nanoparticles. Without affecting their temperature sensitivity, the MWCNTs can significantly enhance the shear thickening performance of silica-based STFs.

Abstract:To investigate the microstructural evolution dependency on the apparent viscosity in shear-thickening fluids (STFs), a hybrid mesoscale model combined with stochastic rotation dynamics (SRD) and molecular dynamics (MD) is used. Muller-Plathe reverse perturbation method is adopted to analyze the viscosities of STFs in a two-dimensional model. The characteristic of microstructural evolution of the colloidal suspensions under different shear rate is studied. The effect of diameter of colloidal particles and the phase volume fraction on the shear thickening behavior is investigated. Under low shear rate, the two-atom structure is formed, because of the strong particle attractions in adjacent layers. At higher shear rate, the synergetic pair structure extends to layered structure along flow direction because of the increasing hydrodynamics action. As the shear rate rises continuously, the layered structure rotates and collides with other particles, then turned to be individual particles under extension or curve string structure under compression. Finally, at the highest shear rate, the strings curve more severely and get into two-dimensional cluster. The apparent viscosity of the system changes from shear-thinning behavior to the shear-thickening behavior. This work presents valuable information for further understanding the shear thickening mechanism.

Abstract:We develop a modified method to improve the rheological performance of SiO2-based shear thickening fluid (STF). Directly adding surfactant into STF is the most common method to improve the rheological performance of SiO2-based STF. However, the final viscosity increases quickly with the increase of shear rate, which is against for the practical applications. In this work, SiO2 nanospheres are firstly modified by PVP K30 through an ethanol refluxing method and the modified SiO2 nanospheres are used to prepare PVP@SiO2-STF. Compared with the unmodified SiO2 based STF (SiO2-STF), the PVP@SiO2-STF presents an obvious increase of shear thickening (ST) effects and the maximum viscosity increases by 7 times and the critical shear rates decrease about 10 times approximately. A reasonable explanation is proposed to interpret the influence of the modification methods on the rheological properties of STF. This work provides a new way to control the shear thickening behavior and also contributes to understand the mechanism of ST effect, which has an important significance to develop controllable STF.

The study investigates the effect of particle size and concentration of colloidal silica on the rheological parameters of STF. The particle size of colloidal silica ranged from 100 to 750 nm. Intended for the ballistic performance of STF, the present work also studies the ballistic performance of STF which is a suspension made up of silica of different colloidal particle concentrations in polyethylene glycol (PEG).

Abstract:Shear thickening is a general process crucial for many processed products ranging from food and personal care to pharmaceuticals. Theoretical calculations and mathematical simulations of hydrodynamic interactions and granular-like contacts have proved that contact forces between suspended particles dominate the rheological characteristic of colloidal suspensions. However, relevant experimental studies are very rare. This study was conducted to reveal the influence of nanoparticle (NP) interactions on the rheological behavior of shear-thickening fluids (STFs) by changing the colloidal surface chemistries. Silica NPs with various surface chemical compositions are fabricated and used to prepare dense suspensions. Rheological experiments are conducted to determine the influence of NP interactions on corresponding dense suspension systems. The results suggest that the surface chemistries of silica NPs determine the rheological behavior of dense suspensions, including shear-thickening behavior, onset stress, critical volume fraction, and jamming volume fraction. This study provides useful reference for designing effective STFs and regulating their characteristics.

Abstract:In this study, the influence of the shear rate and shear time on the transient viscosity of polystyrene-ethylacrylate. based shear thickening fluid (STF) is investigated. If the shear rate is stepwise changed, it is found that both the viscosity and critical shear rate are affected by the shear time. Above the critical shear rate, the viscosity of the STF with larger power law exponent (n) increases faster. However, the viscosity tends to decrease when the shear time is long enough. This phenomenon can be responsible for the reversible structure buildup and the breakdown process. An effective volume fraction (EVF) mechanism is proposed to analyze the shear time dependent viscosity and it is found that viscosity changes in proportion to EVF. To further clarify the structure evolution, a structural kinetic model is studied because the structural kinetic parameter (lambda) could describe the variation in the effective volume fraction. The theoretical results of the structural kinetic model agree well with the experimental results. With this model, the change in viscosity and EVF can be speculated from the variation of lambda and then the structure evolution can be better illustrated.

Abstract:Particle sedimentation is a key issue of conventional magnetorheological (MR) fluids. We recently fabricated MR shear-thickening fluids (MRSTF), which can work as novel MR fluids without particle settling. This merit of the material against particle settling is attributed to the thixotropy property. By using shear-thickening fluids as a base medium, a series of MRSTF samples was prepared and their rheological properties were tested. It was found that when the weight fraction of the STF base is above a threshold value of 15%, the MRSTF exhibits a significant thixotropy phenomenon, which greatly reduces the settling problem of MR fluids and consequently increases the stability of MR fluids. A theoretical approach was proposed to verify the experimental studies.

Abstract:Abstract Shear thickening fluids (STF) are stabilized and concentrated colloidal suspensions of hard nano-particles in a liquid medium (polymer) that, under the influence of impact forces, show non-Newtonian fluid behavior (shear thickening) dissipating the energy of impact. The viscosity of the dispersion medium should be optimum to lead to an increase in shear thickening, and at the same time, should also allow proper dispersion of the particles. Herein, an STF based on 20 wt% fractal nano-fumed silica particles of 11 nm suspended in a liquid medium of polyethylene glycol (PEG 200) with different concentrations of silicone oil was prepared. These systems were studied in terms of steady-state and dynamic-state rheological behavior under a wide range of temperature, shear rate, strain rate and frequency. The STF with replacement of up to only 20% of PEG with silicone oil as the liquid medium shows a large increase (about four times) in shear thickening parameters when compared with STF containing only PEG under the same processing conditions. It also shows more elastic behavior at high frequencies which are due to the high cross-linking property of silicone oil, contributing to much-improved properties, which are highly desirable from the view point of many applications.
