Abstract:Three bichromophores were designed and synthesized by linking a vinylthiophene-conjugated chromophore with different tether groups via esterification. Second harmonic generation measurements of nonlinear polymer films revealed that the second harmonic generation coefficients of the films containing the bichromophore and using 3-phenoxypropane-1,2-diyl succinic diester as the tether group were improved in comparison with the mono-chromophore-doped polymer films. However, the second harmonic generation coefficients of the polymer films containing bichromophores using isophthalic ester as the tether group were decreased. Overall, the results indicate that the 3-phenoxypropane-1,2-diyl succinic diester tether group has potential applications in the design and synthesis of multi-chromophoric dendrimers with large macroscopic optical nonlinearity.

Abstract:The structure of a novel bichromophore that comprised a readily hyperpolarisable chromophore with 3-phenoxypropane-1, 2-diol via esterification, was confirmed by elemental analysis, UV–visible absorption spectra and 1H NMR. Nonlinear optical polymer films were fabricated by doping the bichromophore and the corresponding monochromophore into poly(4-vinylphenol). In situ second harmonic generation measurements revealed that the bichromophore imparted a 2.2-fold enhancement in the second harmonic generation coefficients of the films, indicating that the novel 3-phenoxypropane-1, 2-diol derivative could be used in the design and synthesis of multi-chromophoric dendrimers with large macroscopic optical nonlinearity.

Abstract:Two azole heterocycle-contained chromophores, named EBTC and EBOC respectively, were synthesized and then reacted with 3-isocyannatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICTES) to form functionalized alkoxysilane dyes (ASDs) which were named as ASD-EBTC and ASD-EBOC, respectively. Sol solutions were obtained after co-hydrolysis/condensation of ASD and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) inorganic–organic hybrid films were successfully prepared via sol–gel process. The second harmonic coefficients (d33) of poled hybrid films were measured by a Maker fringe technique. The d33 values obtained for the EBTC and EBOC films are 23.7 and 9.3 pm/V, respectively. The hybrid film containing benzothiazole exhibited better NLO properties than its analogue containing benzoxazole.

Abstract:Two new multi-branched chromophores were synthesized via esterification from monochromophores to achieve ideal macroscopic nonlinear optical activities. Molecular chemical structures of chromophores were confirmed by 1H NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and UV–visible absorption spectra. Monochromophore N1 and bichromophore DN were doped into poly (4-vinylphenol) to fabricate guest-host polymer films Film-N1 and Film-DN with high molecular loading density (up to 30 wt%). And the maximum second harmonic generation coefficients (d33) of polymer films Film-N1 and Film-DN reached to 25 pm V−1 and 39 pm V−1, respectively. In contrast, six-branched dendritic chromophore SN was utilized directly to prepare thin film Film-SN without any polymer matrix due to its large molecular weight (about 3183 Da) and the d33 value of Film-SN was up to 208 pm V−1. Compared with Film-N1, films containing multi-branched chromophores Film-DN and Film-SN exhibited about 1.6-fold and 8.3-fold enhancement in the d33 value indicating the multi-branched chromophore could significantly promote the macroscopic optical nonlinearity through the site-isolation effect.

Abstract:Two similar triphenylamino-substituted chromophores with and without hydroxyl end, named TIOH and TI, respectively, were synthesized and incorporated into hybrid organic–inorganic materials derived from 3-glydoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). These stilbene-type chromophores were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, FTIR, UV–vis spectra and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The hyperpolarizabilities were characterized through solvatochromic method. Both chromophores possess higher thermal stability and competitive hyperpolarizabilities compared with commercially available nonlinear optical dyes such as C.I. Disperse Red 1 (DR1). Second harmonic generation (SHG) has been observed on poled films. The nonlinear coefficient d33 of the samples has been thus estimated about 41.2pm/V for TIOH doped film and about 24.8pm/V for TI doped film, with absorption correction.

Abstract:Four kinds of hydroxy-ended azobenzene-type chromophores containing different substituent groups as electron donor or electron acceptor were synthesized and further reacted with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICTES) to give alkoxysilane dyes via a urethane reaction. Following a sol-gel process of the alkoxysilane dyes, the inorganic-organic hybrid nonlinear optical (NLO) films were successfully prepared. Molecular structures of the resultant films were confirmed by elemental analysis, FTIR, and H-1 NMR. The beta(CT)mu(g) values of the chromophores were evaluated by a solvatochromic method, and the second harmonic coefficients (d(33)) of the hybrid films were measured by in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement. The hybrid films exhibited large optical nonlinearity and full transparency in the visible range. The effects of substituent group and position on beta(CT)mu(g) values of the chromophores and d(33) values of the films were also discussed.

Abstract:A photo-cross-linked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone. The characterization of the polymer was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. The electro-optic film was obtained by spin-coating and corona poling then photo-cross-linked. The film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. An electro-optic measuring system was established based on this film. The results showed that the film has a linear electro-optic characteristic and the voltage sensitivity was higher than that of a GaAs probe.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid films containing nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophores were prepared through the polyaddition of methacrylate and hydrolytic polycondensation of sila-functional alkoxy groups of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSPM) which is capable of forming carbon–carbon and siloxane chains, respectively. The NLO-active chromophores are designed and synthesized to be covalently grafted to the carbon–carbon or the siloxane chains. The comparative study of the two different incorporation methods reveals that the poled hybrid film with NLO-active chromophores bonded to siloxane chains would possess a more stable dipolar orientation.

Abstract:A new hetero-trichromophore (HT-1) was designed and synthesized by linking neutral-ground-state (NGS) chromophore 1 with zwitterionic (ZWI) chromophore 2, and their molecular structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, UV-vis absorption spectra, H-1 NMR. etc. Theoretical calculations show that there is a decrease of molecular dipole moments in gas phase when chromophores 1 and 2 are linked together. The polymer films were fabricated by doping trichromophore HT-1, NGS chromophore 1, and ZWI chromophore 2 into poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh). The second harmonic generation coefficients (d(33)) of the films and the thermal stability of optical nonlinearities were measured by in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement. The results show that almost a 5-fold enhancement in second harmonic coefficients (d(33)) is realized as the combination of NGS chromophore and ZWI chromophore. The results indicate that NGS and ZWI chromophore combined hetero-trichromophores can efficiently improve the macroscopic optical nonlinearities in poled polymer materials.

Abstract:A thiophene-vinyl conjugated FTC-type chromophore was synthesized and reacted with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane to form alkoxysilane dye. The structure of alkoxysilane dye was confirmed via elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H NMR. Stable and transparent hybrid films were fabricated following sol–gel process of alkoxysilane dye and tetraethoxysilane. The second harmonic generation coefficients (d33) of the hybrid films were measured via in situ second harmonic generation measurement. The d33 value of hybrid films was calculated to be 43pmV−1 when the chromophore loading density was 20mol%. Furthermore, the thermal stability of optical nonlinearity was also investigated through a depoling experiment, showing a half decay temperature of 165°C.

Abstract:A new nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6- {4-[4-(N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethylamino)phenylazo]}styryl-4H-pyran (AZP), which features extended conjugated chain based on DCM laser dye, was synthesized and functionalized with alkoxysilane for materials processing. Hybrid films containing chromophore AZP and DCM were prepared via a sol–gel processing. The d33 values of films containing AZP are 39-48pm/V varying with concentration of chromophores, which is similar to that containing DCM. By tuning the organic content, the thermal stability of d33 values can be significantly improved by about 30°C, about 15°C higher than those containing DCM. The residual rotational stress, along with cavity between chromophores and matrix, is proposed to contribute to the stability of NLO activity of hybrid films.

Abstract:A series of novel inorganic-organic hybrid materials with benzimidazole chromophores covalently bonded into the inorganic silica network as pendants has been designed and synthesized via the wet chemistry routes, The measurement results of solvatochromic method and UV-vis spectra indicate that these benzimidazole chromophores exhibit higher microscopic optical nonlinearity compared with their analogues with benzene ring and without undesirable red-shift of the absorption hand. After corona poling, the macroscopic nonlinear optical activity and poling alignment stability of the hybrid films were investigated by in situ second harmonic generation measurement. These hybrid films exhibit enhanced nonlinear optical coefficient from 25 to 54 pm/V with chromophore concentration varied, improved optical transparency (lambda(max) < 470 nm), as well as excellent polar orientation stability at 160 degrees C.

Abstract:Two new chromophores, CLDS1 and CLDS2, based on a similar D-pi-A structure as the phenyl-tetraene chromophore CLD, but with an alkylthio group perpendicular to the direction of the long molecular axis as isolation spacer were synthesized. Through a urethane forming reaction between 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICTES) and chromophores, the alkoxysilane dyes were synthesized. Subsequently, a series of transparent and homogeneous inorganic-organic hybrid films were prepared via a sol-gel process of the alkoxysilane dye with triethoxyvinylsilane. The molecular structures of the resultants were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FTIR and UV-visible spectra. After electric poling, the nonlinear optical coefficients (d(33)) of the hybrid films F-CLDS1 and F-CLDS2 were determined to be 104.54 and 98.17 pm V-1, respectively, which are almost 3 times the d(33) value of hybrid film containing CLD (37.78 pm V-1), indicating that the incorporation of alkylthio group can efficiently improve the macroscopic optical nonlinearities of hybrid materials. Abstract:A novel second-order nonlinear optical chromophore (DCDHF-2-V) containing a tricyanofuran acceptor, was synthesized by a two-step reaction and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, FT-IR and thermal analysis, respectively. Spin-coated films of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) doped with DCDHF-2-V were fabricated and their poling behaviors were studied by UV–visible absorption spectra and atom force microscopy (AFM). The second-order nonlinear coefficient d33 was taken from the second harmonic generation (SHG) experimental setup and thereby the calculated value was 15.2 pm/V at the wavelength of 1064 nm. The relation between the second-order nonlinear coefficients d33 and d13 for the poled polymer film was also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Two bulky alkoxysilane dyes based on nonlinear optical (NLO)-active triphenylamino derivatives possessing high thermal stabilities, without and with a cyano group substitution on the vinylene moiety (TPAH and TPACN, respectively), were synthesized, characterized, and copolymerized with tetraalkoxysilane (TEOS) with the ratio of 1:5. After a poling and curing process, the resulting side-chain-type sol-gel films with excellent optical qualities were achieved. Second-order NLO coefficients, d33, of 10-20 pm/V have been obtained in the films incorporated with different types of NLO-active dyes. The variation of chromophoric structures on NLO properties was investigated, indicating that the cyano substitution on the vinylene bridge of the chromophore would greatly enhance the temporal stability. This work provides a potential design strategy based on molecular engineering which would lead to more stable dipole orientation.

Abstract:A new series of poly(p-diethynylbenzene) derivatives with trans structure and long-conjugation side chains were synthesized. These polymers possess good solubility and thermal stability. The maximum absorptions and band gaps depend on the nature and number of the substituents. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of these polymers were characterized with second-order hyperpolarizability as large as ≈10–30 esu in the non-resonant region.

Abstract:A novel Y-type chromophore named 5,6-bis (4- hydroxyphenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)- 1,2,4-triazine (DBPNPT) and its corresponding silicon alkoxysilane dye DBPNPT-ICTES were synthesized. The organic-inorganic films containing the newly synthesized chromophore DBPNPT were prepared by co-hydrolysis/condensation process with TEOS. The beta(CT mu g) value of chromophore was determined to be 37.9*10(-30)esu.D by solvatochromic method. Both of the chromophore and hybrid materials have a high melting point and a good transparency in visible wavelength.

Abstract:The polyimide-silica nonlinear optical (NLO) hybrid materials with covalent links between the inorganic and the organic networks were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The prepared hybrids were characterized by IR, TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM and can be easily spin-coated, ensuring long-term alignment stability at elevated temperatures. These devices exhibit large electro-optic coefficients at 832 nm. The experimental results suggest that the hybrid thin films have potential applications as passive films for optical devices.

Abstract:A family of second-order nonlinear optical sol–gel films with a pendent thiophene chromophore has been developed. The key step in preparation these hybrids was the syntheses of alkoxysilane dye containing thiophene ring, which was accomplished by utilizing the urethane forming reaction. Molecular structural characterization for the resultant was achieved by FTIR, 1H NMR and UV–Visible spectra. The microscopic optical nonlinearity of the thiophene chromophore was evaluated to be 7646×10−30 esu D by solvatochromic method and second harmonic coefficients (d33) of the hybrid film was also calculated to be 41.2 pm/V by second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the stability of optical nonlinearity in poled film was also investigated through a depoling experiment.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are of considerable interest for the development of electro-optic modulation, optical switching, data storage, and so on. Recently, hybrid sol-gel films exhibiting second-order NLO properties have attracted much attention due to their low optical propagation loss and feasibility of device fabrication. In this paper, a chromophore containing indanone was synthesized by Knoevenagel reaction between aldehyde and indanedione derivative, and then reacted with 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (ICTES) to yield an alkoxysilane dye. Their molecular structures were characterized by elemental analysis, H-1-NMR, FTIR, and UV-visible spectra. Transparent spin-coated thin films were fabricated via the sol-gel process of alkoxysilane dye and TEOS. The NLO properties of chromophores and corona-poled films were analyzed by solvatochromic method and in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement, respectively.
