Abstract:This study sought to evaluate the treatment efficiency of effluent applied to land. Large barrel lysimeters containing intact soil cores were irrigated weekly with thermomechanical pulp (TMP) effluent over a period of 16 months. Volumes and constituent concentrations of the irrigated effluent and soil leachate were measured to determine fluxes and renovation rates for the individual effluent constituents. Analysis of the selected TMP effluent showed low levels of nutrients and inorganic contaminants, but it contained high concentrations of wood-derived organic contaminants, such as total organic carbon (TOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and wood extractives. Removal rates through the soil core were greater than the 90% for TOC, COD, BOD, turbidity, resin acids, phytosterols and phenols. No excessive nutrient and heavy metal leaching was observed during the experimental period.
