Abstract:This review presents a brief account of our recent investigations on synthetic and structural organolanthanide complexes with the 2-methoxyethylcyclopentadienyl ligand. Lanthanide metals possess large ionic radii and strong Lewis acidity, and by using 2-methoxyethylcyclopentadienyl as ligand, the oxygen atom in the ligand can coordinate to the lanthanide metal center in addition to the cyclopentadienyl system. Some novel organolanthanide complexes with such as an intramolecular coordination bond were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. The formation of a chelating five-membered ring structure via the intramolecular coordination bond results in an increase in the steric effect and coordination number of the lanthanide metals. The coordination need of light lanthanide metals is thus satisfied, and the syntheses and characterization of organometallic light lanthanide complexes can be achieved, especially for the complexes of lanthanum, such as (CH3OCH2CH2C5H4)(3)La, [(CH3OCH2CH2C5H4)(2)La(mu-Cl)](2), (CH3OCH2CH2C5H4)(2)LaI, [(CH3OCH2CH2C5H4)(2)La(mu-H)](2) and (CH3OCH2CH2C5H4)(2)LaBH4. Moreover, the structures of organolanthanide complexes with this ligand depend not only on the size of the lanthanide cations, but also on the size of the anions.

Abstract:AbstractThe ability to harness charges and spins for control of organic excitonic states is critical in developing high‐performance organic luminophores and optoelectronic devices. Here we report a facile strategy to efficiently manipulate the electronic energy states of various organic phosphors by coupling them with inorganic lanthanide nanocrystals. We show that the metallic atoms exposed on the nanocrystal surface can introduce strong coupling effects to 9‐(4‐ethoxy‐6‐phenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole (OCzT) and some organic chromophores with carbazole functional groups when the organics are approaching the nanocrystals. This unconventional organic–inorganic hybridization enables a nearly 100 % conversion of the singlet excitation to fast charge transfer luminescence that does not exist in pristine organics, which broadens the utility of organic phosphors in hybrid systems.

Herein is a brief review on the synthesis, structure and reactivity of these complexes.

Abstract:A variety of lanthanocene complexes, e.g. chlorides, hydrocarbyls, amides, hydrides and divalent derivatives, were synthesized by using a series of designed cyclopentadienyl, indenyl and fluorenyl ligands with ring bridges or dornor-functionalized sidearms. X-Ray crystallographic analyses reveal the formation of intramolecular coordination bonds between central metals and heteroatoms (O, N) in sidearms or bridging chains. Some applications of these complexes are also discussed in this account.

Abstract:Organochalcogen compounds are prevalent in numerous natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers, biological molecules and synthetic intermediates. Direct chalcogenation of C-H bonds has evolved as a step- and atom-economical method for the synthesis of chalcogen-bearing compounds. Nevertheless, direct C-H chalcogenation severely lags behind C-C, C-N and C-O bond formations. Moreover, compared with the C-H monochalcogenation, reports of selective mono-/dichalcogenation and exclusive dichalcogenation of C-H bonds are relatively scarce. The past decade has witnessed significant advancements in selective mono-/dichalcogenation and exclusive dichalcogenation of various C(sp(2))-H and C(sp(3))-H bonds via transition-metal-catalyzed/mediated, photocatalytic, electrochemical or metal-free approaches. In light of the significance of both mono- and dichalcogen-containing compounds in various fields of chemical science and the critical issue of chemoselectivity in organic synthesis, the present review systematically summarizes the advances in these research fields, with a special focus on elucidating scopes and mechanistic aspects. Moreover, the synthetic limitations, applications of some of these processes, the current challenges and our own perspectives on these highly active research fields are also discussed. Based on the substrate types and C-H bonds being chalcogenated, the present review is organized into four sections: (1) transition-metal-catalyzed/mediated chelation-assisted selective C-H mono-/dichalcogenation or exclusive dichalcogenation of (hetero)arenes; (2) directing group-free selective C-H mono-/dichalcogenation or exclusive dichalcogenation of electron-rich (hetero)arenes; (3) C(sp(3))-H dichalcogenation; (4) dichalcogenation of both C(sp(2))-H and C(sp(3))-H bonds. We believe the present review will serve as an invaluable resource for future innovations and drug discovery.

Abstract:Reactions of [ Cp(2)Ln(mu-Cl)](2) (Cp = eta(5)-C5H5, Ln = Nd, Yb, Dy, Gd, Er) with an equivalent of [ (THF)(3)LiE2C2B10H10Li. (TT-IF) (THF)](2) (E = S, Se) in THF afforded the dinuclear sandwich complexes of formula[Cp(2)LnE(2)C(2)B(10)H(10)](2)[Li(THF)(4)](2) [E = S, Ln = Nd (1a), Yb (2a), Dy (3a), Gd (4a), Er (5a); E = Se, Ln = Nd (1b), Yb (2b), Dy (3b), Gd (4b), Er (5b)]. The molecular structures of complexes la, 2a and 2b were determined by the single crystal X-ray structure analyses. Two lanthanide atoms are connected by a pair chalcogen (eta(1), eta(2)-E2C2B10H10) bridging ligands and the central Ln(2)E(2) four membered ring is not planar.

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln) based mononuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) provide probably the finest ligand regulation model for magnetic property. Recently, the development of such SMMs has witnessed a fast transition from coordination to organometallic complexes because the latter provides a fertile, yet not fully excavated soil for the development of SMMs. Especially those SMMs with heterocyclic ligands have shown the potential to reach higher blocking temperature. In this minireview, we give an overview of the design principle of SMMs and highlight those "shining stars" of heterocyclic organolanthanide SMMs based on the ring sizes of ligands, analysing how the electronic structures of those ligands and the stiffness of subsequently formed molecules affect the dynamic magnetism of SMMs. Finally, we envisaged the future development of heterocyclic Ln-SMMs.

Abstract:Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln<sup>III</sup>). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:In this Perspective, selective N-H bond transformations of lanthanocene complexes are discussed. Recent efforts in this area from our laboratory have been devoted to development of new insertions and cyclizations of the anionic and neutral NH moieties of lanthanocene complexes into unsaturated substrates beyond the realm of the Ln-N bond, wherein various reactivity patterns of the N-H bond and the functional substituent effects are observed. The results demonstrate that the N-H moiety of organolanthanide complexes is an excellent platform for the in situ construction of new organic N-containing ligands in organolanthanide chemistry.

Abstract:Six new ethylthioethylcyclopentadienyl-containing organolanthanide complexes Cp2 ThLnCl [Ln=Gd (1), Dy (2)] and Cp 2LnCpTh [Cp=C5H5, Ln=Yb (3), Sm (4), Dy (5), Y (6)] were synthesized by the reaction of ethylthioethylcyclopentadienyl (CpTh) sodium salt with LnCl 3 or Cp2LnCl in THF. Complexes 1-6 were characterized by elemental analyses, infrared and mass spectroscopies. The molecular structures of complexes 1-3 were also determined by the X-ray single crystal diffraction. The results show that the side-chain sulfur atom on the ethylthioethylcyclopentadienyl ring can form intramolecular chelating coordination to the central lanthanide ion, improving the stability of organolanthanide complexes and reducing the number of coordinated THF molecules.

Abstract:Understanding lanthanide coordination chemistry can help develop new ligands for more efficient separation of lanthanides for critical materials needs. The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) contains tens of thousands of single crystal structures of lanthanide complexes that can serve as a training ground for both fundamental chemical insights and future machine learning and generative artificial intelligence models. This work aims to understand the currently available structures of lanthanide complexes in CSD by analyzing the coordination shell, donor types, and ligand types, from the perspective of rare-earth element (REE) separations. We obtain four sets of lanthanide complexes from CSD: Subset 1, all Ln-containing complexes (49472 structures); Subset 2, mononuclear Ln complexes (27858 structures); Subset 3, mononuclear Ln complexes without cyclopentadienyl ligands (Cp) (26156 structures); Subset 4, Ln complexes with at least one 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or its derivative as a coordinating ligand (2226 structures). The subsequent analysis of lanthanide complexes in these subsets examines the trends in coordination numbers and first shell distances as well as identifies and characterizes the ligands and donor groups. In addition, examples of Ln-complexes with commercially available complexants and phen-based ligands are interrogated in detail. This systematic investigation lays the groundwork for future data-driven ligand designs for REE separations based on the structural insights into the lanthanide coordination chemistry.

Abstract:The reactivity of lanthanocene derivatives containing the p-aminothiophenolate ligand towards carbodiimide was examined. Reaction of Cp(2)Ln(p-SC6H4NH2)(THF) with RN=C=NR in THF at room temperature gave four novel organolanthanide guanidinate complexes [Cp(2)Ln(p-SC6H4N(H)C(NHR)=NR)](4) (R = Pr-i, Ln = Yb (1a), Er (1b); R = Cy, Ln = Yb (2a), Er (2b)), formed by the addition of the C=N double bonds of the carbodiimide molecule to the para-position amino group. Their unique square-planar macrocycle structures have been determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. This result provides a potential method for the construction of organolanthanide macrocycles.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed and organocopper-involved reactions are of great significance in organic synthesis. To have a deep understanding of the reaction mechanisms, the structural characterizations of organocopper intermediates become indispensable. Meanwhile, the structure-function relationship of organocopper compounds could advance the rational design and development of new Cu-based reactions and organocopper reagents. Compared to the mono-carbonic ligand, the C,N- and C,C-bidentate ligands better stabilize unstable organocopper compounds. Bidentate ligands can chelate to the same copper atom via eta(2)-mode, forming a mono-cupra-cyclic compounds with at least one acute C-Cu-C angle. When the bidentate ligands bind to two copper atoms via eta(1)-mode at each coordinating site, the bimetallic macrocyclic compounds will form nearly linear C-Cu-C angles. The anionic coordinating sites of the bidentate ligand can also bridge two metals via mu(2)-mode, forming organocopper aggregates with Cu-Cu interactions and organocuprates with contact ion pair structures. The reaction chemistry of some selected organocopper compounds is highlighted, showing their unique structure-reactivity relationships.

Abstract:Since the discovery of metal chalcogenide complexes (MCCs) as capping ligands for colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) in 2009, the chemistry of inorganic ligands for NCs has provided a new paradigm for surface design of nanomaterials. Various inorganic anions including MCCs, metal-free chalcogenides, oxoanions/oxometallates, and halides/pseudohalides/halometallates have been employed to replace the original long-chain organic ligands on NCs. This ligand exchange can also be achieved through a two-step route using ligands stripping agents like HBF4. This review outlines recent advances in inorganically-capped colloidal NCs and details the ligand exchange process for NCs using MCCs and metal-free chalcogenides. The binding affinities of ligands to NC surface have been rationalized in terms of Pearson's hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle. We also demonstrate that inorganic ligands broaden the functionality of NCs by tailoring their electro-optical properties or generating new inorganic phases through chemical reactions between nanomaterials and their surface ligands. Especially promising are the electronic, optoelectronic, and thermoelectric applications of solution-processed, inorganically-capped colloidal NCs, which substantially outperform their organically-capped couterparts.

Abstract:The coordination chemistry between inorganic and organic species can be optimally exemplified by metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), whose structures and functionalities can be rationally designed from these highly tunable building blocks. The high porosity, stability, and versatile functionalities of MOFs have attracted wide-spread attention from energy-related research and pollution remediation to biomedical applications. A unique and underexplored subset of these materials are MOFs based on actinide nodes; these MOFs have distinguished themselves as a unique platform for investigating the versatile oxidation states, reactivity, and coordination chemistry of actinides. Herein, we will focus on the rational design and synthesis of actinide-based MOFs under the general guidelines of coordination chemistry for their structural and functional explorations. The dimensionality, topology, and structures of actinide-based MOFs can be controlled by selecting pre-designed building blocks of actinide-based nodes and organic linkers with certain desired coordination geometries and functionalities. These unique actinide-based MOFs have shown promise for applications in nuclear waste mitigation, pollution control, and catalysis.
