Abstract:The prevalence,harmfulness and difficulty in management of cyberloafing have aroused the attention of business people and scholars from both home and abroad.This paper reviews three aspects of relative studies on cyberloafing,focusing on the fundamental studies which includes the definition,classification,characteristics and influence of cyberloafing,causes of cyberloafing from the perspective of employees and organization and cognitive,screening,technical,institutional,cultural and psychological management countermeasures.This paper finally discusses shortage of current study and the study orientation in the future such as the measurement,influence,technical supervision and management measures of cyberloafing.
Exploring the Complex Relationships Between Factors That Affect Employee Cyberloafing Using a Novel Approach: Findings from Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis

Abstract:Cyberloafing is a workplace problem that has emerged over the past two decades and continues to be problematic as workers' schedules become more flexible and deterrents associated with being physically present in an office are unavailable. Understanding the complex conditions under which employees are more likely to engage in cyberloafing activity continues to be valuable for businesses. This study identifies and models seven conditions that influence cyberloafing and investigates how interconnected social and deterrence factors affect employees' cyberloafing behavior. With a cross-sectional random sample of 324 employees from 14 provinces in China, the necessary condition analysis is used to identify the necessary conditions for high cyberloafing, and the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative approach is conducted to explore the configurational impacts of multiple antecedent conditions on high cyberloafing. The results show that no single condition is necessary for a high level of employee cyberloafing and that three distinct configurations of multiple conditions equivalently contribute to high cyberloafing among employees. Among all configurations, high visibility of cyberloafing, a lack of certainty of formal sanctions, and a lack of reward for not cyberloafing play important roles in explaining employees' cyberloafing. This study is the first to use fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to explore how different combinations of social and reinforcement antecedents contribute to cyberloafing, which goes beyond existing research that explores antecedents independently and offers new insights into cyberloafing's interconnected antecedents and their complex causality.

Abstract:This investigation delves into the pervasive yet insufficiently examined phenomenon of "cyberloafing", characterized by employees engaging in non-work-related internet activities during office hours. Despite its frequent occurrence in contemporary work environments, the fundamental mechanisms underpinning cyberloafing remain largely uncharted. This study uses the conservation of resources theory and the cognitive-affective personality system framework to demystify the relationship between role stress and cyberloafing. We developed a dual-path model to assess the mediating roles of perceived insider status and emotional exhaustion. Employing SPSS and Smart PLS for data analysis, our research sampled 210 corporate employees. The findings reveal that role stress predicts perceived insider status and emotional exhaustion significantly. Notably, while perceived insider status negatively correlates with cyberloafing, emotional exhaustion shows a positive correlation. These factors mediate the relationship between role stress and cyberloafing, underscoring a multifaceted dynamic. Our results provide new theoretical insights into the mechanisms of employee counterproductive behavior, specifically in the context of cyberloafing, and broaden our understanding of its determinants. This study illuminates theoretical nuances and offers practical implications for managerial strategies and future scholarly inquiries into organizational behavior.
Cyberloafing: Investigating the Importance and Implications of New and Known Predictors

Abstract:Cyberloafing occurs when employees use technology to loaf instead of work. Despite mounting organizational concern and psychological research on cyberloafing, research provides little actionable guidance to address cyberloafing. Therefore, the present study builds on previous cyberloafing investigations in three primary ways. First, we utilize a person-situation framework to compare personological and situational construct domains. Second, we extend the cyberloafing nomological network by investigating previously unexamined, yet powerful, predictors. Third, we employ a multivariate approach to identify the most important cyberloafing antecedents. From seven cyberloafing constructs, we found that boredom, logical reasoning, and interpersonal conflict were the most important correlates. Our results highlight novel, important predictors of cyberloafing and allow us to provide empirically-based recommendations for developing cyberloafing interventions.

Abstract:Cyber-loafing—using the internet for non-work purposes during work time—can lower employee productivity and expose organizations to security risks. Organizations need to control this type of behavior. We studied two control methods: internet use policies and electronic monitoring. We empirically investigated the effectiveness of these two methods and how their effectiveness is influenced by the employees’ individual differences. Based on the data collected from 209 Chinese public servants, we found that both methods can significantly lower employees’ cyber-loafing intentions. Additionally, an internet use policy is more effective for employees with a high level of self-esteem than for those with a low level of self-esteem, whereas electronic monitoring is more effective for employees with a high level of job satisfaction than for those with a low level of job satisfaction. This study advances the theoretical understanding of methods for the control of cyber-loafing and has practical implications for the mitigation of its negative effects.

Abstract:Workplace cyberloafing has become increasingly common within organizations due to the intensification of work pressure and the development of a digital office.The phenomenon has attracted extensive interest among practitioners and academicians.This project discusses the outcome of workplace cyberloafing and its feedback effects by integrating actor and observer perspectives.The main contents include:(1)identifying core dimensions of cyberloafing,and categorizing different types of workplace cyberloafing;(2)testing the pros and cons of workplace cyberloafing from an actor-centered perspective;(3)unveiling the interpersonal effects of workplace cyberloafing on the leader and coworkers from an observer-centered perspective;(4)exploring the change trajectory of workplace cyberloafing from an interaction perspective,between the actor and observer.The four studies connect with each other and progress gradually,constituting a complete closed-loop system unveiling the whole process of workplace cyberloafing from its functions to its adjustment in response to feedback.The results of this study are expected to promote the development and innovation of the field of workplace cyberloafing research,and provide practical guidance for organizations to deal with workplace cyberloafing.

Abstract:Cyberloafing is a form of counterproductive work behaviour (CWB), that is increasingly prominent yet easily concealed. This organizational phenomenon poses numerous detrimental effects on organizations, underscoring the importance of understanding the factors that can mitigate employee cyberloafing. Drawing on social exchange theory (SET) and social information processing theory (SIP), this study proposes an integrated model that explores the double-edged sword effect of servant leadership on cyberloafing. We hypothesize that servant leadership may increase meaningful work or citizenship pressure, thereby discouraging or facilitating cyberloafing. Meanwhile, we investigate the moderating effect of regulatory focus (promotion focus and prevention focus). Data were collected from 375 Chinese employees in three waves, with a two-week interval between each wave. The results showed that servant leadership enhanced meaningful work, resulting in a disincentive to cyberloafing. Conversely, servant leadership intensified citizenship pressure, leading to an increase in cyberloafing. The negative indirect effect of servant leadership on cyberloafing via meaningful work was moderated by promotion focus. Specifically, this indirect effect was more pronounced when the promotion focus was higher. Our research offers crucial insights for preventing employee cyberloafing in organizations.

Abstract:With the development of the Internet, cyberloafing becomes the workplace problem for many organizations. It will negatively influence organisations’ productivity and performance. In this study, we examined the direct and indirect relationship (via meaningful work) between abusive supervision and cyberloafing, based on the theory of social cognition and social exchange. Data collected from 183 participants were analysed using hierarchical regression. The results showed that abusive supervision has a significant positive impact on cyberloafing, both directly and indirectly. We suggest that organizations should reduce abusive supervision by leaders and take measures to cultivate employees ' sense of work meaning.

Abstract:Cyberloafing, the use of the Internet for non-work related activities, is widespread in the workplace. Although most research on cyberloafing concentrates on negative consequences for employees and organizations, studies have begun exploring its potential positive effects. This study contributes to that discussion by examining the impact of employee social cyberloafing on their mental health. We draw from ego-depletion theory and the effort-recovery model to develop a framework that explains social cyberloafing's effects on two facets of employee mental health: fatigue and psychological detachment. Data from 375 Chinese employees were analyzed using a structural equation model and bootstrapping procedure. Results show that while social cyberloafing has a positive relationship with psychological detachment, it leads to employee fatigue. Moreover, psychological detachment positively and fatigue negatively mediate the relationship between social cyberloafing and mental health.

Abstract:Purpose The substantial cost of employee cyberloafing to organizations calls for research into exploring the factors that influence such behavior. Drawing upon social cognitive theory, the authors develop a theoretical model that unpacks when and why leader forgiveness induces employee cyberloafing. Specifically, the authors identify moral disengagement as a linking mechanism and employee empathic concern as a key boundary condition in the association between leader forgiveness and employee cyberloafing behaviors. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted multilevel analyses to examine the authors' hypotheses by utilizing a sample of 71 supervisors and 306 direct reports. Findings Results showed that leader forgiveness encouraged employee cyberloafing via moral disengagement among employees with low empathic concern, whereas the indirect effect was not present among those with high empathic concern. Originality/value The authors contribute to the literature on cyberloafing and leader forgiveness. First, this study extends the cyberloafing research by considering leader forgiveness as an enabler, challenging the dominant notion that positive leader behaviors (e.g. leader mindfulness) constrain employee cyberloafing while negative leader behaviors (e.g. abusive supervision) elicit it. Second, although past studies have predominantly concentrated on the positive outcomes of forgiveness, the current research contributes to the balanced and comprehensive understanding of leader forgiveness by linking leader forgiveness with employee cyberloafing.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to integrate conservation of resources theory discus the antecedents and consequences of cyberloafing as well as the boundary effect between cyberloafing and mental health. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected 431 valid questionnaires in four months. Each questionnaire was divided into two parts that had to be distributed. The interval between the first distribution and the second distribution was 15 days. Findings The research study revealed that employees' Zhong-Yong thinking and cyberloafing promote mental health, and cyberloafing has a mediating effect. Mindfulness weakens the positive impact of cyberloafing on mental health. Originality/value The research study's results break the stereotype that cyberloafing is not good for organizations. When managers allow employees to engage in cyberloafing at work, this is conducive to employees' mental health, which can ensure the company's sustainable development.

Abstract:This study examined the direct and indirect relationships (via job satisfaction) between workload, self-efficacy, time management skills, and cyberloafing. Survey data were collected from 217 employees representing the retail jewellery industry. To analyse the data, structural equation modelling was performed using the AMOS software package. We discovered that job satisfaction mediates the relationship between workload, time-management skills, self-efficacy, and cyberloafing. Moreover, we found no direct effect of workload and self-efficacy on cyberloafing. However, we observed that time management skills are negatively associated with cyberloafing. Thus, the findings of this study suggest that cyberloafing is a counterproductive form of withdrawal behaviour, which is a response to job dissatisfaction associated with high workload, low self-efficacy, and poor time management skills. The research results are discussed within the context of their theoretical and practical impact. The current findings are expected to facilitate further cyberloafing research and highlight the importance of job satisfaction in employees' cyberloafing.

The U-shaped Effect of Responsible Leadership on Employees’ Cyberloafing

Abstract:Purpose: The study explores the U-shaped impact of responsible leadership on cyberloafing and the moderating effect of self-efficacy based on conservation of resources theory. Design/methodology/approach: This is a field study based on quantitative analysis of full-time employees in the enterprises who work on computers for over 1 year. Hierarchical regression was employed to examine hypotheses. Bootstrap and Bayesian analysis to conduct robustness tests. Findings/results: Results from 305 employees showed that responsible leadership had a U-shaped impact on cyberloafing. The self-efficacy moderated the U-shaped relationship between responsible leadership and cyberloafing. For employees with high self-efficacy, responsible leadership is more likely to reduce cyberloafing, but for employees with low self-efficacy, responsible leadership is more likely to increase cyberloafing. Practical implications: Organisations should recognise the role of leaders in mitigating employees’ cyberloafing behaviour through effective supervision, and equip the leaders with a comprehensive understanding of their impact. Besides, for employees with low self-efficacy, leaders should pay attention and help them through effective supervision. Originality/value: Our work illustrated the double-edged sword effect of responsible leadership on employee cyberloafing and identified self-efficacy as a key boundary condition of the conservation of resources theory. This study expands the related research on the influencing factors of cyberloafing behaviour and provides clue for the possible negative effects of responsible leadership. In addition, this study deepens the conservation of resources theory.

Abstract:Cyberloafing, defined as non-work-related Internet use during work hours, has brought about considerable loss of both employees' performance and organization's profits all over the world. Accordingly, more and more researchers have tried to explore the predictors of cyberloafing. While most researchers pay attention to some organization conditions or personal emotions, we suppose some personal characteristics also matter, such as the trait of procrastination and the tendency of compulsive Internet use. 272 questionnaires were distributed among the graduate and doctoral students who are available to the Internet and do research online nearly every day. 255 effective questionnaires have been got. The results of the multiple regression analysis have proved that both trait procrastination and the tendency of compulsive Internet use are significant predictors of the prevalence of cyberloafing.

Abstract:The antecedents of employees' cyberloafing (internet use for nonwork purposes during office hours) have become a burgeoning research topic. This research therefore explores how and when participative leadership serves as an important antecedent to employees' cyberloafing. Drawing upon self-concept-based theory, we hypothesize that participative leadership can reduce the cyberloafing of employees with a high need for power by increasing their organization-based self-esteem (OBSE). Analyzing survey data from 212 employee-coworker dyads, we have found that participative leadership is positively related to employees' OBSE, which, in turn, is negatively related to employees' cyberloafing. Moreover, employees' need for power strengthens the relationship between participative leadership and employees' OBSE as well as the indirect relationship between participative leadership and employees' cyberloafing through their OBSE. These relationships are significant (versus nonsignificant) when employees' need for power is high (versus low). Accordingly, this research identifies a novel predictor of employees' cyberloafing and offers insights for organizational leaders aiming to manage employees' cyberloafing wisely.

Abstract:With the Internet permeating every aspect of daily life, organizations of all types are increasingly concerned about the degree to which their employees are cyberloafing by shirking their work responsibilities to surf the Internet, check e-mail, or send text messages. Although technological interventions against cyberloafing have been shown to be effective, they might be perceived by employees as an invasion to their privacy, and are expected to have repercussions on employee behavior and loyalty. The main objectives of this study are to (1) examine how the introduction of such technological interventions might affect employees’ emotions and fairness perceptions, and (2) understand the effect of the interventions on behavioral outcomes, i.e., employees’ intentions to cyberloaf and their loyalty to the company. We developed a justice-based framework that we empirically test using a field experiment composed of field surveys complemented with hypothetical scenarios describing new organizational initiatives to curb employees’ cyberloafing. Our findings suggest that technological interventions, although associated with perceptions of unfairness, are effective at controlling cyberloafing, albeit at the expense of employee loyalty. On the other hand, contrary to prior findings, we find that fairness perceptions of technological interventions, although reinforcing employee loyalty, are ineffective at curbing cyberloafing. These findings are especially enlightening in that they contradict a common belief that perceived fairness encourages employees, as a sign of their appreciation for this fairness, to curb their misuse of IT. The findings also help managers fine-tune their cyberloafing policies to achieve a long-lasting remedy to their employees’ cyberloafing while maintaining a necessary level of employee loyalty.

Abstract:Abstract This correlational study investigated the factors affecting cyberloafing behavior in an educational environment, specifically that of a computer laboratory teaching setting. A total of 272 students selected using convenience sampling responded to a questionnaire that collected data about cyberloafing behavior and student demographics, personality type, sense of belonging, motivation, locus of control and teacher evaluation (respect, activities, communication, motivation) as well as computer lab teaching settings and norms. The results indicated that students in computer lab teaching settings cyberloaf mainly for socialization, followed by personal business and news follow-up. Males cyberloaf more frequently than females, especially for personal business and news follow-up. As students’ internet skills increase, so does their cyberloafing, particularly for personal business and socialization. A lack of instructor norms in computer lab lectures and student amotivation are also associated with increases in cyberloafing for personal business, whereas instructors’ respect for students and negative attitudes towards cyberloafing are associated with decreases in cyberloafing for socialization. This paper discusses the study findings in detail and makes recommendations for additional research.
