Abstract:The Möbius function of the subgroup lattice of a finite group has been introduced by Hall and applied to investigate several questions. In this paper, we consider the Möbius function defined on an order ideal related to the lattice of the subgroups of an irreducible subgroup $G$ of the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}(n,q)$ acting on the $n$-dimensional vector space $V=\mathbb{F}_q^n$, where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is the finite field with $q$ elements. We find a relation between this function and the Euler characteristic of two simplicial complexes $\Delta_1$ and $\Delta_2$, the former raising from the lattice of the subspaces of $V$, the latter from the subgroup lattice of $G$.

Characteristic polynomials of isometries of even unimodular lattices

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

Abstract:We explore some interesting features of the characteristic polynomial of the Cartan matrix of a simple Lie algebra. The characteristic polynomial is closely related with the Chebyshev polynomials of first and second kind. In addition, we give explicit formulas for the characteristic polynomial of the Coxeter adjacency matrix, we compute the associated polynomials and use them to derive the Coxeter polynomial of the underlying graph. We determine the expression of the Coxeter and associated polynomials as a product of cyclotomic factors. We use this data to propose an algorithm for factoring Chebyshev polynomials over the integers. Finally, we prove an interesting formula which involves products of sines, the exponents, the Coxeter number and the determinant of the Cartan matrix.

Abstract:The shuffle lattice was introduced by Greene in 1988 as an idealized model for DNA mutation, when he revealed remarkable combinatorial properties of this structure. In this paper, we prove an explicit formula for the $M$-triangle of the shuffle lattice, a bivariate refinement of the characteristic polynomial, as conjectured by McConville and Mühle in 2022, and find a relation between the $M$-triangle and the $H$-triangle, a bivariate refinement of the rank generating function.

Abstract:In this paper, the correspondence between the finite dimensional representations of a simple Lie algebra and their characteristic polynomials is established, and a monoid structure on these characteristic polynomials is constructed. Furthermore, the characteristic polynomials of sl(2, C) on some classical simple Lie algebras through adjoint representations are studied, and we present some results of Borel subalgebras and parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras through characteristic polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we will compute the characteristic polynomials for finite dimensional representations of classical complex Lie algebras and the exceptional Lie algebra of type G2, which can be obtained through the orbits of integral weights under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups and the invariant polynomial theory of the Weyl groups. We show that the characteristic polynomials can be decomposed into products of irreducible orbital factors, each of which is invariant under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups.

Abstract:We obtain a novel formula for characteristic polynomials of deformations of the Braid arrangement using the notion of levels of regions. As an application, we recover and strengthen results of Chen et al. on the characteristic polynomial of several specific types of hyperplane arrangements via much simpler arguments. Our theorem also generalizes to type B.

Abstract:In a finite group G , ρ(G) denotes the product of element orders of G . Let p,q,r,s and t be prime numbers. Recently, it was proved that Cp3 , C pq , Cp2q and C pqrs are characterizable by the product of element orders, and if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr) , then G≅A5 or Cpqr . In this paper, we continue this work and we show that Cp×A5 (for p > 5) and C pqrst are characterizable by the product of element orders. In the rest of the paper, we show that if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr)sρ(Cs)p2q, then (p,q,r,s)=(2,3,5,11) and G≅L2(11) . This shows that the structure of ρ(G) uniquely determined L2(11) and so L2(11) is the only group with this form of ρ(G) .

Abstract:With a main tool is signed graphs, we give a full description of the characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals of classical root systems ($ABCD$) with respect to the integer and root lattices. As a result, we obtain a full description of the characteristic polynomials of the toric arrangements defined by these ideals. As an application, we provide a combinatorial verification to the fact that the characteristic polynomial of every ideal subarrangement factors over the dual partition of the ideal in the classical cases.

Abstract:We fix a monic polynomial f ¯ ( x ) ∈ F q [ x ] \bar f(x) \in \mathbb {F}_q[x] over a finite field of characteristic p p of degree relatively prime to p p , and consider the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower defined by f ¯ ( x ) \bar f(x) ; this is a tower of curves ⋯ → C m → C m − 1 → ⋯ → C 0 = A 1 \cdots \to C_m \to C_{m-1} \to \cdots \to C_0 =\mathbb {A}^1 , whose Galois group is canonically isomorphic to Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^\ell } , the degree ℓ \ell unramified extension of Z p \mathbb {Z}_p , which is abstractly isomorphic to ( Z p ) ℓ (\mathbb {Z}_p)^\ell as a topological group. We study the Newton slopes of zeta functions of this tower of curves. This reduces to the study of the Newton slopes of L L -functions associated to characters of the Galois group of this tower. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the Newton slopes of the L L -function asymptotically form a finite union of arithmetic progressions. As a corollary, we prove the spectral halo property of the spectral variety associated to the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower (over a large subdomain of the weight space). This extends the main result in a 2016 work of Davis, Wan, and Xiao from rank one case ℓ = 1 \ell =1 to the higher rank case ℓ ≥ 1 \ell \geq 1 .

Abstract:Lattice, as a basic object in Mathematics, has been studied by many prominent figures, including Gauss, Hermite, Voronio, Minkowski, Davenport, Hlawka, Rogers and many others still active today. It is one of the most important cornerstones of Geometry of Numbers, a classic branch of Number Theory. During recent decades, this pure mathematical concept has achieved remarkable applications in Cryptography, in particular its algorithm approaches. The main purpose of this talk is to demonstrate some basic mathematical problems and results (old and new) about lattices, which are probably useful in Cryptography in the future. These problems reflect some of the main interests of the mathematicians about lattices.

Abstract:For any branched double covering of compact Riemann surfaces, we consider the associated character varieties that are unitary in the global sense, which we call $\text{GL}_n\rtimes\!<\!\sigma\!>\!~$-character varieties. We restrict the monodromies around the ramification points to generic semi-simple conjugacy classes contained in $\text{GL}_n\sigma$, and compute the E-polynomials of these character varieties using the character table of $\text{GL}_n(q)\rtimes\!<\!\sigma\!>\!$. The result is expressed as the inner product of certain symmetric functions associated to the wreath products $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^N\rtimes\mathfrak{S}_N$. We are then led to a conjectural formula for the mixed Hodge polynomial, which involves (modified) Macdonald polynomials and wreath Macdonald polynomials.

On character sheaves and characters of reductive groups at unipotent classes

Abstract:With a view to determining character values of finite reductive groups at unipotent elements, we prove a number of results concerning inner products of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters with characteristic functions of character sheaves, here called Lusztig functions. These are used to determine projections of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters to the space of unipo- tent characters, and to the space of characters with a given wave front set. Such projections are expressed largely in terms of Weyl group data. We show how the values of characters at their unipotent support or wave front set are determined by such data. In some exceptional groups we show that the projection of a generalised Gelfand-Graev character to a family with the same wave front set is (up to sign) the dual of a Mellin transform. Using these results, in certain cases we are able to determine roots of unity which relate almost characters to the characteristic functions. In particular we show how to compute the values of all unipotent characters at all unipotent classes for the exceptional adjoint groups of type G2, F4, E6, E7 and E8. We also pro- vide an appendix which gives a complete list of the cuspidal character sheaves on all quasi-simple groups.

Abstract: In this paper, we will develop more character varieties for a finite group $G$ by generalizing original character theory of Frobenius to good partition algebras. In the view of this generalization theory, we will reformulate the refined McKay conjecture and part of Navarro' conjecture on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture in the form of equality of polynomials. We will define the Frobenius polynomial, degree polynomial and prove that the ordinary character table of $G$ is equivalent to the Frobenius polynomial of the center of $FG$. We find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. As an application of this new invariants, we prove that the normal series of a finite pure perfect group is determined by the lengths of its conjugate classes.
On $p$-adic Minkowski's Theorems

Abstract:Dual lattice is an important concept of Euclidean lattices. In this paper, we first give the right definition of the concept of the dual lattice of a $p$-adic lattice from the duality theory of locally compact abelian groups. The concrete constructions of ``basic characters'' of local fields given in Weil's famous book ``Basic Number Theory'' help us to do so. We then prove some important properties of the dual lattice of a $p$-adic lattice, which can be viewed as $p$-adic analogues of the famous Minkowski's first, second theorems for Euclidean lattices. We do this simultaneously for local fields $\mathbb{Q}_p$ (the field of $p$-adic numbers) and $\mathbb{F}_p((T))$ (the field of formal power-series of one indeterminate with coefficients in the finite field with $p$ elements).

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a general formula for the characteristic polynomial of a finitely dimensional representation of Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \C )$ and the form for these characteristic polynomials, and prove there is one to one correspondence between representations and their characteristic polynomials. We define a product on these characteristic polynomials, endowing them with a monoid structure.

In particular, we show that the image of the character map for both the p -adic Heisenberg and p -adic lattice vertex operator algebras contain infinitely-many non-classical p -adic modular forms which are not contained in the image of the algebraic character map.

Abstract:Gauss and Dedekind have shown a bijection between the set of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of primitive positive definite binary quadratic $\mathbb{Z}$-forms of the discriminant of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\Delta<0})$ and the class group of its ring of integers. Using étale cohomology we show an analogue of this correspondence in the positive characteristic. This leads to the description of the set of genera and to another result analogous to Gauss' one by which any form composed with itself belongs to the principal genus.
