Abstract:The present paper is aimed at disclosing some particular chlorination reaction characteristics of aromatic organic compounds we have obtained as a result of experiments and testings. As is known, water sources in our country have been suffering from the pollution and one of the pollutants is said to be aromatic organic compounds (AOCs) . Technically speaking, if AOCs compounds were found in the drinking water with a concentration from ng/L to μg/L) , the water could be said polluted or contaminated. In our experiments done recently to study the chlorination reaction activities of AOCs during the chlorination disinfection process of drinking water, we have found some chemical effects of AOCs on the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including not only trihalomethanes (THMs) , but haloacetic acids (HAAs) as well. The research results of ours on the whole indicated that: (1) The order of the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) , the number of the resulted by-products and the reaction rate of DBPs (the sum of THMs and HAAs) in the chlorination reaction processes of the selected representative AOCs can be stated as follows: 2,4-dichlorophenol2,6-dichlorophenol2,3- dichlorophenol1,4-benzenediol phenol acetophenone benzaldehyde; (2) the characteristics of the resulted disinfection byproducts (DBPs) of the functional groups, their amount and location on the benzene ring indeed influence the DBPs' formation characteristics in chlorination reactions of AOCs. The electron-donation functional groups on the benzene rings of AOCs indeed positively influenced the production of DBPs, whereas the electron-gaining functional groups had the negative effect. the number of the resulted disinfection by-products (DBPs) of hydroxy functional groups on the benzene ring of AOCs had functional relation with the formation of THMs and HAAs. The more the functional groups on the benzene rings of AOCs, the easier the formation of the disinfection by-products (DBPs) . the THMs formation for the chlorination reactions of the AOCs with the substituent group structure of meta position were greater than para ortho positions, but the HAAs formation for those of the AOCs with the ones of para ortho position were larger than meta position; (3) We have done kinetic experiments to determine the rate constants for the chlorination reactions of 1,4-benzenediol, and found the results that the chlorination reaction of 1 ,4-benzenediol included both the rapid (pseudo-first-order rate constants k = 7×10~(-5) s~(-1)) and slow reaction stages (second-order rate constants V = 96 mol·L~(-1)·min~(-1)) .
