Abstract:Positron emission tomography(PET), a functional imaging device, can track biological and metabolic changes caused by therapy or by disease progression, and therefore play a significant role in the management of cancers used as a clinical imaging modality. Although PET facilitates the evaluation of metabolic characteristics of a wide variety of cancers, it is limited in its ability to visualize anatomical structures. PET/CT fulfills fusion of PET and CT imaging, so it can provide metabolic informations of disease with anatomical finding, adding further information to the diagnoses; It makes the location and characterization of the lesions more accurate. This paper reviews the application of PET and PET/CT in head and neck cancers.
