Monitoring rabbit mandible fracture healing using ultrasound examination

Abstract:Background: Currently, the density and area of the bone callus detected by X-ray examination is used to evaluate fracture healing process. However, X-ray is harmful for human body. Minimally invasive ultrasound examination has become the focus for fracture healing evaluation. Objective: To monitor the fracture healing process of rabbit mandible fracture through ultrasound examination, and to compare it with X-ray. Design, Time and Setting: Randomized grouping design and animal control observation. The experiment was performed at the laboratory of Baoan Songgang People's Hospital from December 2006 to December 2007. Materials: Thirty clean-grade, New Zealand rabbits, aged 7-12 months were provided by the Animal Experiment Centre of Zhongshan University. Methods: Six normal rabbits were randomly selected for ultrasound and X-ray examinations, and the other 24 rabbits were made models of mandible fracture. Clinical examination, ultrasound and X-ray examination were performed on day 1, weeks 1, 2,4, 6, and 8 postoperatively. The results of the examination was graded by certain standard and analyzed by spearman's correlation coefficients. Main Outcome Measures: Bone fracture healing was observed using X-ray and ultrasonic methods. Results: Thirty rabbits were included in the final analysis. X-ray showed that progressive calcification was found in the space of mandible fracture; the fracture space was narrowed with time, and bone callus formed. The ultrasound examination suggested that at the middle stage of fracture healing, there was sound beam from the fracture space; at the late stage of fracture healing, the sound beam and sound shadow gradually disappeared, indicating bone callus density was increased, and callus was well calcificated. The results of ultrasound examination were compatible with the X-ray examination through out the follow up duration. The analysis of Spearman correlation showed that Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.966, and P < 0.001. Conclusions: As a substitute of X-ray examination, ultrasound examination can be used to identify fracture healing through monitoring the fracture space changes and bone callus formation.
