Abstract:Objective:To analyze the pathological and clinical characteristics of branchiogenic carcinoma and to discuss the management. Methods: Pathological and clinical data and treatment as well as outcome of 3 cases of branchiogenic carcinoma were reported with a review of literature to sum up the diagnostic and treatment aspects for branchiogenic carcinoma. Results: The chief presentation of branchiogenic carcinoma was isolated mass existed in the branchial vestige, sometime recurrent nerve involved. Squamous cell carcinoma and epidermoid cyst carcinoma were the most common pathologic types of branchiogenic carcinoma. Microscopically, stratified epithelium and transition from normal epithelium to carcinoma could be found in the wall of the cyst. Lymphoid structures could be identified but characteristic structures of lymph node were absent. After treated with surgery alone or surgery plus irradiation, survival of the 3 cases were 3, 7and 8 years, respectively. Conclusion: Metastatic carcinoma should be excluded before diagnosis of branchiogenic carcinoma. The prognosis of branchiogenic carcinoma is fairly well. Radical excision of the neck mass is recommended for branchiogenic carcinoma. Irradiation is not considered except that tumor could not be resected entirely.
