Abstract:With the domestic tourism development and prosperity of Buddhism and Taoism, the quantity of incense burning is increasing. In order to decrease the cost,a large mount of poor quality incense is manufactured and flows into the temples. In this paper,in order to investigate the air pollution due to incense burning in mainland China, the airborne concentrations of inhaled particles(PM10) and formaldehyde concentration were measured at different test sites in two temples located in Beijing. The results indicated that the formaldehyde concentration in the air near the incense burner was the highest and the averaged value was above 0.67 mg/m3,while the averaged values of formaldehyde concentration in the air of indoor and outdoor worships were also higher than 0.08 mg/m3,which above the limited value which was harmful to human health.Besides, most of the particles were in the submicron range, and the number of PM1.0 and PM2.0 possessed above 87% and 96% respectively. It was concluded that the incense burning was the main source for inhaled particle pollution.Consequently, health risk for temple Buddhist priest, staffs and worshipers who were exposed to the pollutants from incense burning for a long time might be increased. For the current situations, the fragrant manufacture standard should be established, the production and circulation of incense with harmful chemical compositions should be prohibited and the health protection for temple Buddhist priest and staffs should be strengthened.
