Abstract:Studies on toxicity and safety evaluation of pesticides to silkworm(Bombyx mori) constitute the basic work for early-warning of pesticides' potential hazard to silkworm raising in sericultural area.This article reviewed the research progresses of this field in the past 20 years.Mainly,it introduced the acute and chronic toxicity of frequently used pesticides in mulberry field and nearby crop field to silkworm and the determination methods of pesticides' residue toxicity,compared the characteristics and applicable scopes of toxicity grading methods such as reference method,toxicity ratio method,and grade setting method,and put forward recommendations for improving performance in such aspects as the coverage of determination targets,the normalization of determination protocols,and the comprehensiveness of evaluation indexes in toxicity and safety evaluation of pesticides to silkworm.Furthermore,a number of suggestions were put forward for establishing a collaborative research network in the field,formulating testing procedures and comprehensive evaluation technological system,and implementing comprehensive hazard-reduce measures to prevent silkworm from being poisoned by pesticides.
Extraction, purification, structural characteristics, and pharmacological activities of the polysaccharides from corn silk: A review

Abstract:Corn silk is widely used as a traditional Chinese medicine possessing multiple beneficial effects, whose active ingredient is corn silk polysaccharide (CSP). CSP is abundant in corn silk, and has a variety of bioactivities, such as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, hepatorenal-protective, antitumor, anti-fatigue, immunomodulating, and anti-ischemia-reperfusion injury effects. Moreover, CSP ameliorates diabetes, diabetes nephropathy, and hyperlipidemia. This review aimed to comprehensively and systematically summarize recent information on the extraction, purification, structural characterization, biological activity, potential mechanism, and toxicity of CSP. Thus, it could provide a reference for the further use of CSP and discuss the future prospects of CSP research and development.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To review the chemical constituents from Camptotheca acuminate Decne and report bioactivities,which provides detailed information for further investigations and applications of C.acuminate,a plant resource endemic to China.METHODS Based on 39 domestic and foreign literatures,the analysis,induction and summarization of chemical constituents and bioactivities of C.acuminate.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION The major chemical components of C.acuminate are alkaloids,ellagic acid,and flavonoids.The crude extract of C.acuminate shows anti-tumor,immunosuppression and anti-virus activities.
Extraction Optimization, Preliminary Identification, and Bioactivities in Corn Silk

Abstract:For thousands of years, corn silk has been widely used as an antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antihyperlipidemic and for other effects, but there is a lack of studies that correlate the extracts of flavonoid composition with their biological activities. Thus, the objectives of this study were to optimize the conditions for extracting flavonoids, identify flavonoids, and correlate the flavonoid composition with the biological activities in corn silk. The response surface experiments showed that the highest flavonoid content was predicted at 45.321 min, 57.349°C, 26.089 mL/g, and 71.269%, respectively. The verification experiment results under these optimized conditions showed an ultrasonic time of 45 min, an ultrasonic temperature of 57°C, a liquid-to-material ratio of 26, and an ethanol volume fraction of 70%. No significant differences (the relative error is 4.378%) were observed between the theoretical and experimental TFC values, indicating that the developed models were accurate. Under these optimum extraction conditions, 20 major compounds were identified and quantified by UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS. Furthermore, these optimum ethanol extracts of corn silk are effective against Bacillus subtilis and hypoglycemic activity compared with the traditional heating reflux extraction method. Six corn silk components seem to be the main contributors to the inhibitory effect against Bacillus subtilis and hyperglycemia activities. These results are useful for the application of corn silk in the food or pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:When harvesting corn, corn silk was discarded as waste, including the compounds isolated and identified from corn silk such as flavonoids, sterols, alkaloids, polysaccharides, organic acids, volatile oils, trace elements, and multivitamins. It not only pollutes the environment but also wastes resources. In this paper, extraction methods commonly used for extracting flavonoids from corn silk were reviewed, such as reagent method, enzymatic method, microwave, supercritical CO2 extraction, ultrasonic, and microwave-assisted ultrasonic. Flavonoids are natural antioxidants and have application value in scavenging free radicals, inhibiting bacteria, and regulating blood lipids. The in vitro biological activities of flavonoids from corn silk extracted by different extraction methods were also compared.

Abstract:The technological parameters and quality indicators of corn silk were evaluated in this study: specific density, volumetric density, bulk density, porosity, spatial layer, free volume of the layer, the absorption coefficient, weight loss on drying, and extractives. The technology for obtaining a liquid extract of corn silk was developed. The most effective extractant was discovered to be 40% ethanol, with an extraction time of 120 minutes. The qualitative composition and quantitative content of the major groups of biologically active substances (BAS) in the obtained liquid extract were determined. The qualitative composition of the main groups of BAS was determined by conventional chemical reactions. This extract contained free reduced sugars, glycosides (bound reduced sugars), phenols, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and hydroxycinnamic acids. The quantitative content of phenolic compounds was performed by UV-vis-spectrophotometry. Total phenols, tannins, flavonoids, and hydroxycinnamic acids had quantitative contents of 8.25 ± 0.33%, 1.4 ± 0.03%, 2.20 ± 0.06%, 3.30 ± 0.13%, respectively. The acute toxicity study was carried out with a single intragastric administration to outbred unanesthetized white rats of both sexes. Duration of observation of animals was 14 days. It was revealed that corn silk extract at doses of up to 5.0 ml/kg is safe. A single injection of a liquid extract has no effect on internal organs when compared to a control group. Corn silk liquid extract's hemostatic efficacy was assessed using blood clotting time, prothrombin time, and blood clot retraction index. The corn silk liquid extract reduces blood coagulation time, decreases prothrombin time, and increases the blood clot retraction index. According to these findings, corn silk liquid extract is rich in phytochemicals and possesses a potential therapeutic effect on bleeding disorders. Furthermore, it could be used in the pharmaceutical sciences industry to develop medicines for testing in the treatment of various diseases.

Abstract:The research and development of fine size silk as representative of special silk variety,and its products are being concerned by lots of scholars at home and abroad,which have achieved positive progresses.Using the induction of trimolter by anti-juvenile hormone analogs and the breeding of fine size silkworm variety,the fine size silk of about 2.0 D(2.222 dtex) and its special products received by the market were developed.The ultrafine size silk of about 1.0 D(1.111 dtex) were developed by using "superfine plain" to change the moultinism of silkworm,and its products have good characteristics as unique luster and flavor,anti-wrinkle,excellent stainability,high efficiency etc.,showing the good development and utilization value.

Abstract:In addition to having different biological activities of interest, corn silks play a role in the defense of plants. While benzoxamines and flavonoids have already been identified as molecules of plant defense and growth mechanisms, knowledge on the phytochemical composition of corn silk is lacking. Such knowledge would make it possible to better select the most effective varieties to improve resistance or bioactive properties. In this article, an approach was implemented to map a corn silk extract in two complementary ways. The first one involved working with UHPLC/HRMS data and Kendrick and van Krevelen plots to highlight a homologous series of compounds, such as lipids from 17 to 23 carbons, monoglycosylated flavonoids from 21 to 24 carbons, diglycosylated flavonoids of 26 to 28 carbons and organic acids of 14 to 19 carbons. The second way was to analyze the sample in UHPLC/HRMS2 and to plot mass spectral similarity networks with the GNPS platform and Cytoscape software to refine identification. By combining the information obtained, we were able to propose an identification for 104 detected molecules, including 7 nitrogenous, 28 lipidic and 67 phenolic compounds, leading to the first detailed phytochemical analysis of corn silk extract.

Abstract:Corn Silk is a beneficial herb that possesses health-promoting nutrients, including flavonoids. It has been found safe for human consumption and used to treat many diseases like urinary tract infections, asthma, hypertension, dropsy, and pathological swelling. It has also been found advantageous against oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, urinary tract infections, edema, prostate disorders, cystitis, obesity, nephrotoxicity and renal dysfunction. The phytochemical in Corn Silk possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The bioactive compounds in Corn Silk that are beneficial for health include vitamins, carbohydrates, magnesium, proteins, calcium, sodium and magnesium salts, alkaloids, steroids, volatile salts, potassium, flavonoids, and many other phenolic compounds. Maysin is one of the flavonoids in Corn Silk. This review highlights the therapeutic effects of Corn Silk in healthcare.
Physicochemical Characteristics of Corn Silk

Abstract:This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of corn silks. Pollination of corn silks was finished within three days after silking, and elongation of open pollinated corn silks was stopped, but unpollinated silks elongated until eight days after silking. Moisture contents of corn silks were about 92-94% at silking stage, but continuously decreased. these were about 70-75% at 30 days after silking. Chlorophyll b was higher than chlorophyll a in corn silks, and chlorophyll a/b ratios of four hybrids were high in this order : silage ＞ sweet ＞ super sweet ＞ waxy corn. Free sugars in corn silks were mainly fructose, glucose and maltose. Their composition rate was 55% of glucose, 42% of fructose and 4% of maltose. Water soluble solid (Brix %) contents of unpollinated corn silks were ranged from 13.7 to 16.8 Brix % and pollinated corn silks were from 12.6 to 13.7 Brix %. Phytic, oxalic, malic. shikimic, glutaric and acetic acid were detected on corn silks. Phytic, oxalic and glutaric acid were considered as a major organic acids in corn silks. Amino acids in corn silks were high in this order : waxy ＞ silage ＞ sweet ＞sweet corn. Serine, glycine and thereoine were contained more than 10%, and five amino acids such as aspartic, glutaric, arginine, alanine and proline were ranged about 5 to 8%. Methionine and cystine, amino acids containing sulfur were contained only small quantity as about 2.1% and 1.3%, respectively. Acetaldehyde, ethanol, acetone, DMS, isobutylaldehyde, cis-3-hexanol, 3-hexe-1-ol, acetate, trans-2-hexanol and pentanol were detected as the volatile components in corn silks, but acetaldehyde and DMS were major volitiles in silage corn silks, and acetaldehyde, ethanol and DMS were major volitiles in waxy corn silks. The length of corn silks was a positively correlated with organic acids (r=), and a negatively correlated with amino acids (r=), respectively. Free sugars were positively correlated with all characteristics tested and significantly correlated with organic acid (r=TEX>${0.703}^{**}$), and flavonoids (r=TEX>${0.544}^*$). Chlorophyll was significantly correlated with flavonoid contents (r=TEX>${0.523}^*$). For this reason chlorophyll was evaluated as an indirect selection character for the high flavonoid containing varieties.

Abstract:Corn silk is a well-known ingredient frequently used in traditional Chinese herbal medicines. This study was designed to evaluate the anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic activities of crude flavonoids extracted from corn silk (CSFs) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. The results revealed that treatment with 300 mg/kg or 500 mg/kg of CSFs significantly reduced the body weight loss, water consumption, and especially the blood glucose (BG) concentration of diabetic mice, which indicated their potential anti-diabetic activities. Serum total superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) assays were also performed to evaluate the anti-oxidant effects. Besides, several serum lipid values including total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were reduced and the high density lipoprotein cholesterol level (HDL-C) was increased. The anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic effect of the CSFs suggest a potential therapeutic treatment for diabetic conditions.

Abstract:In China, Colla corii asini is a health-care food and traditional Chinese medicine widely used in life-nourishing and clinical hematic antanemic therapy for more than 2,000 years. In this paper we compiled the chemical constituents isolated and detected from Colla corii asini including amino acids, proteins/gelatins, polysaccharides, volatile substances, inorganic substances, etc. Meanwhile we investigated the biological activities of Colla corii asini, which have been reported over the past few decades, including, hematologic diseases inhibitory activities, anti-aging activity, antitumor activity, immunomodulatory activity, bone repair activity, anti-inflammatory activity, antifatigue activity, etc. However, few reports on the relationships between the chemical constituents and bioactivities have been found, further studies of Colla corii asini are still necessary to facilitate research and development in the future.

Abstract:Fructus Corni , derived from the dried fruit of Cornus officinalis Sieb. Et Zucc., is widely used as a food source and Chinese herb. Fructus Corni , as an indispensable ingredient in Liuwei Dihuang decoction, tonifies the liver and kidneys. As the main component of water decoctions, Fructus Corni polysaccharides demonstrate multifaceted effects, including hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, antioxidant, anti-aging, sexual function regulation, and anti-epileptic, The ultrasound-assisted extraction method obtained the highest yields of Fructus Corni polysaccharides. However, it has notable shortcomings and lacks further innovation. The homogeneous polysaccharides obtained from Fructus Corni are mostly neutral polysaccharides with relatively limited structure, and the mechanism of their biological activity needs to be further elucidated. In addition, different extraction, isolation and purification methods may change the molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and biological activity of polysaccharides. Therefore, this study systematically summarized the extraction, purification, structural features, and biological activities of Fructus Corni polysaccharides. This study aimed to provide support for the ongoing development and application of Fructus Corni polysaccharides.
