Abstract:The paper analyzes the definite place of industrial building in the history of urban development. Due to the development of urban economy and the transition of the traditional industrial structure, many historic cities and towns both at home and abroad have witnessed a large-scale "demolition" and abandonment of industrial buildings in urban renewal during last 30 years. Consequently, it has been leading to the discontinuity of urban cultural and historic context. The paper discusses and expounds the classification, possible ways and measures for adaptive-reuse and redevelopment for historic industrial buildings, sets up an analytical framework of designing methods on renovation of historic industrial sites and buildings and several proposals on practice for further considerations are put forward.

Abstract:Through an analysis of Hangzhou's Jinghang Grand Canal riverside industrial land uses this paper emphasizes the importance of maintaining the relationship of people with the land with the continuity of local culture.The renovation model for riverside industrial land is discussed and an interactive function conglom-eration model is proposed.The conglomeration model identifies the growth point for renovation that retains sustainable functions and maintains both old and new building ratios.An effective functional cycle that considers both functional and location needs is formed to push the area toward positive development.

Abstract:Industrial sites are brownfields left in the process of urban development, which were originally considered as the burden of the city. However, in today’s lack of land resources, industrial sites have become valuable assets of the city. Further excavation and effective use of them is one of the important ways to alleviate the tension of urban land use. The strategy of ecological reconstruction and sustainable design in the landscape of industrial sites is mainly reflected in the minimal intervention in the natural ecology of the site, the use of renewable materials and resources, the retention of native plants, human history and site memory. It makes the ecology of urban industrial site landscape more balanced, enhances the uniqueness and experience of urban industrial site landscape, meets the spiritual and physiological needs of people in the city, and realizes the sharing of industrial site landscape to the public’s natural ecology, land, industrial spirit, history and humanity.

Abstract:Derelict land is a land type that causes great destruction to the ecological environment, destroys the cities' scenery and leads to the waste of land resources. As an embodiment of the long-term view of sustainable development, it is necessary to deal with the urban industrial Wastelands and resuscitate them by utilizing the technology of ecological restoration. By introducing three successful examples of the resuscitation of the industrial wasteland - the "Gas Works Park" in Seattle (USA), the North Duisburg Landscape Park (Germany), and the Qijiang Park in Zhongshan City (China), this paper discusses their emerging and development processes as well as their insightful ideas and particular methods for ecological design, meanwhile illustrates their specific meaning and suitability to China. It is expected that the successful experiences of these three typical cases will be helpful to the urban ecological restoration and landscape planning in the future.

Abstract:Industrial heritage's reuse is one of important component of urban renewal, and it is also a method to realize the renovation and transformation that turning industrial heritage into post-industrial landscape. Taking ten cases of Shanghai area industrial heritage which are reused for public recreation space as examples, which includes Xujiahui Park, Shanghai Red Town, Shanghai Post-industrial Landscape Park, Laobaidu Riverside green space, Xuhui Riverside green space, and Intelligence Park, Houtan Park, Bailianjing Park and so on, we analyze the features of Shanghai post-industrial landscape's development. Then we summarize general experience of industrial landscape's renovation. The aim is to rich the theoretical support for the protection and reuse of Shanghai post-industrial landscape.

Abstract:Post-WWII industrial shifts led to urban development and the endangerment of many industrial sites, vital for their historical, cultural, and technical value to urban identity. As integral components of urban identity, industrial heritage sites embody substantial historical, cultural, and technological significance. Thus, UNESCO, ICOMOS, and TICCIH strongly advocate for the protection of these invaluable industrial heritages. However, traditional industrial heritage conservation often focuses on the protection of physical objects, overlooking their intrinsic values. This tendency poses certain challenges to the sustainable preservation of heritage. This paper investigates methods for evaluating the value of local industrial sites with the aim of enhancing community identity and belonging as well as strengthening the sustainable conservation of industrial landscapes. This paper employs landscape character assessment as a fundamental approach to analyzing an area's features, significance, and uniqueness by considering both social and natural factors and attributing true value to the site. This paper conducted an in-depth review and analysis of the relevant fields through a systematic literature review, ensuring the quality of the literature with the PRISMA framework and MMAT tool, and then explored the feasibility and specific procedures of implementing landscape character assessment in industrial heritage conservation. The findings highlight that the protocols for identifying and valuing landscape character assessment significantly impact its effectiveness and feasibility in sustainability conservation efforts. In conclusion, this research broadens conservation strategies for industrial heritage landscapes, offering insights for future studies and significantly aiding in protecting local industrial heritage and its value.

Abstract:Urban waterfronts in port cities have experienced a dramatic shift in the process of expanding industrialization, which causes severe ecological and social problems in postindustrial cities. Transforming manufacturing sites to inclusive landscapes requires costly remediation and careful planning to foster smart development that promotes the city’s economic vibrancy, enhances social and cultural contexts, and improves quality of life. While conventional reclamation strategies mainly focus on the technical aspect of simply performing to meet minimum engineering standards, new industrial urbanism offers a pathway to relink the manufacturing waterfront in contemporary city life through ‘landscape medium’. This paper explores the evolutionary phases of industrial waterfronts from a diachronic perspective and proposes a theoretical framework that utilizes the landscape medium to integrate historically separated elements, including people, infrastructure, and buildings. Using the Yangpu waterfront in Shanghai as a case study, we analyze a completed reclamation project and summarize four sustainable design approaches—connecting, resilient, locality, and inclusive—that can transform obsolete manufacturing sites into inclusive urban landscapes. The primary contribution of this regeneration plan is to reconstruct a continuous and adaptable waterfront field that can accommodate diverse activities and changing needs. To validate our urban design framework, we examine another industrial waterfront renewal project along the Soochow Creek, which has been successfully approved in conceptual design. Overall, our research demonstrates the potential for sustainable, inclusive, and adaptable urban design to revitalize industrial waterfronts and create vibrant, livable urban landscapes.

Research on the Innovative Regeneration of Post-industrial Space in China

Abstract:In the past few decades, with the industrial transformation and upgrading of many Chinese cities, a large number of obsolete industrial buildings have appeared in the central areas of the cities. Although these former industrial buildings have lost their original functions in manufacturing industry, they have great spatial structure and geographic locations. Some post- industrial areas also bear the expectations of the older generation since they have witnessed the historical changes, cultural transmission and development of the cities. Many western countries have experienced the transformation of post-industrial buildings earlier than China and some successful regeneration projects incorporated the transformation of post-industrial buildings with their national development plans and conducted in-depth theoretical studies and practical case demonstrations. Similarly, China has been actively conducting the research and practice for the transformation of post-industrial buildings in the past few decades. These former industrial buildings are effectively employed to maximize the economic benefits and enhance the historical values and cultural connotations of these old industrial buildings. This paper analyzes the purpose of innovative transformation of post-industrial building space and the significance of the transformation from the perspective of national economy, ecological environment, and national policy. It also explores the issues concerning the innovation of micro spatial change and cultural transformation.

Abstract:The conservation and adaptive-reuse of historical industrial building is one of the most important issues to be solved in today’s urban development and construction in China. In this paper, the necessity and academic meaning of the conservation and adaptive-reuse of historical industrial building, were discussed by reviewing its development rend both at home and abroad, and the basic contents of the implementation of the conservation and adaptive-reuse of historical industrial building in China with specific cases provided were analyzed. It is the central task for China to put forward the restructuring and design methods, assessment principles and relevant core technical specifications based on the empirical researches on the historical industrial building and site.
Waterfront Industrial Heritage Protection and Prolonging the Spirit of the City: A Case Study of the Industrial Heritage Area in the West Side of Gongchen Bridge, Hangzhou

Abstract:Industrial heritage is critical representation of the industrial civilization. It carries the memory of the modernization process of the city, and provides precious foundations for city renewal and brand building. The transform of industrial structure and the rising awareness of heritage protection make the waterfront docks, garages, and old factories become important industrial heritages. Based on a review of industrial heritage and the spirit of the city, this study uses the industrial heritage area on the west side of Gongchen Bridge, Hangzhou,which adopts the museum approach and builtds Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museums, as a case study. It firstly examines the development model and initiatives undertaken by the management team, including the holistic protection model, positioning on the mass audience, live presentation approach, initiative management, and adopting of digital techniques. This study suggests a dual-layer model, including a basic element layer and a supporting element layer, referring to industrial heritage protection and prolonging the spirit of the city in this case. Through in-depth interviews from a view of a city wanderer, this study further assesses different stakeholders' attitudes towards the museums' practice in protecting and transferring the industrial heritages. In this case, the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage takes a comprehensive form which integrates partial functions of traditional museum, creativity industry park and leisure tourism place together instead of a single so-called reuse model. Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museums own its unique lead, innovation and brand, which is bound up with external factors including Hangzhou's urban renewal concept, leisure tourism environment, cultural industries cultivation, internationalization, etc., and internal factors brought by the Grand Canal(Hangzhou Section) Comprehensive Protection Project. Therefore, empirical model related to this case could be only provided as a reference and comparison, and more effective ways would be found if combined with the trend of urban organic renewal, heritage authenticity protection, industrial chain extension, and human emotional appeal.

Abstract:This article first defines idle industrial facilities, summarizing their characteristics as temporal, accessible, flexible, and malleable. It then elaborates on the concept of the cultural and creative industries, highlighting their features as cultural diversity, uniqueness, creativity, and concentration. Subsequently, the paper categorizes spaces redesigned for regeneration, classifying them as art exhibition spaces, commercial spaces, public spaces, and social and resting spaces. Based on this framework, the study explores the design features of cultural and creative industries in regenerating idle industrial spaces in city centers, identifying four key traits: symbolic, multipurpose, specialized, and participatory. The analysis includes case studies of transformation projects like the 798 Art Zone and Seongsu-dong, concluding with targeted recommendations such as enhancing original industrial historical elements, adding interactive designs to provide a deeper immersive experience, and improving the industrial environment with increased subsidies. The aim is to foster the transformation of more idle industrial spaces into vibrant redevelopment projects through the power of cultural and creative industries.

Abstract:Industrial heritage is one of the most neglected types of cultural heritage and urban landscape, often being vulnerable to rather than blessed by urban (re)development. China is confronting an unprecedentedly intensive challenge of preserving industrial heritage, as the country has rapidly shifted towards post-industrialization only several years after being recognized as the "world's factory" in the 21st century. However, none of the existing literature has systematically investigated the typology and preservation of China's post-1949 industrial heritage. This research selects Shanghai—the largest metropolis and a prime industrial hub in China— for the case study, and examines 83 accredited modern industrial heritage sites in the city through typological analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, and GIS spatial analysis. Two principal findings are identified. First, there is a diverse range of the post-1949 industrial heritage in China, by industries, time, and spatial forms. Particularly the industrial block—where industrial development is intermingled with the surrounding urban fabric—is the dominant spatial type. Second, the preservation and regeneration of China's post-1949 industrial heritage in the suburbs are substantially more complex and more threatened than those in the inner city. This study concludes by providing implications for enhanced management and investigation of China's post-1949 industrial heritage preservation and regeneration.

Abstract:Nanjing is an economic hub of the Yangtze River Delta, and one of the most important industrial bases in modern China. During the processes of change of urban spatial structure and optimization of industrial structure, the old industrial zones developed in downtown areas before 'reform and opening up' have experienced continuing regeneration. More and more companies have moved to industrial parks in the suburbs, while the former factories have been developed for new functions including housing, services or creative industries. These changes of function have had an enormous impact on the city's economy, land use, transportation system and population distribution. This article aims to provide an understanding of the processes of formation and renewal of Nanjing's old industrial zones. It discusses the background and planning strategies as well as the effects of the redevelopment of these industrial zones at different historical stages. It draws general conclusions about the process of renewal, and highlights some resulting problems such as work-home separation and loss of job opportunities in downtown areas.

Abstract:With the development of urbanization and urban industrial relocation, the remaining special railway lines are increasingly deserted and block the organic integration of urban space. As a material element of urban industrial culture, the abandoned railway line carries a profound industrial history and diverse cultural features. As a materialized industrial heritage, it also provides more feasible ways for the expansion of urban public space, ecological environment governance, and the renewal of industrial abandoned land. Through the analysis of domestic and foreign urban abandoned railway industrial landscape protection and redevelopment related cases, summarizes the landscape protection strategy: protect the original site form, reduce the later artificial intervention traces, reflect the beauty of existing industry, reshape the cultural landscape, reengineering industrial period historical scene, with dynamic railway line and its urban vitality, promote the industrial abandoned site function self innovation. Finally, according to the Zhengzhou Railway Industrial Park project as an example, through the analysis of its site transformation, style protection and functional renewal design strategies, to explore the reasonable application of the above key points, which is of guiding significance for the industrial cultural protection of the abandoned urban railways and the construction of landscape parks in China.

Abstract:Industrial heritage is among the products of modern urban development, and the influencing factors of its regeneration and development are often complex. Due to different national conditions, the research progress and approaches in industrial heritage reuse in China are different from other countries. While industrial heritage sites in Europe have become part of urban redevelopment in several regions, China still focuses mostly on single objects, lacking systematic analysis, especially at the urban scale. Regarding the city of Nanjing, an operational approach to complex urban dynamics is proposed based on a simplified analysis of official statistics, maps and GIS technology. The influence mechanisms of Nanjing's urban planning on industrial heritage regeneration and development after 1990 are analyzed. The results show that urban growth boundaries, traffic accessibility, eco-environmental policies, population distribution, industrial renovation investment and natural resource change all have a significant impact on the abandonment and regeneration of Nanjing industrial heritage. This study expands the research perspective of industrial heritage reuse in China and proposes a clearer systematic planning strategy for the future of industrial heritage in cities.

Abstract:The industrial heritage landscape carries the special memory of the industrial civilization and the city, and has been paid more and more attention by people. The problems faced by the regeneration, utilization and protection of industrial heritage landscapes are multi-dimensional. Based on the perspective of the recessive process, this paper expounds the theory and internal relationship between the industrial heritage landscape and the narrative expression of the landscape, and proposes a design strategy for the narrative expression of the industrial heritage landscape under the recessive process. The regeneration design of industrial heritage landscape is carried out on three levels: place meaning, constructing the text of the hidden process of the landscape, and realizing the transformation of the text text narrative information. Through the implicit process that subverts and complements the development of the plot, another layer of ideographical track is constructed that is parallel to the narrative expression of the industrial heritage landscape in the past, which is based on the development of the plot. A more complex response enriches the narrative expression of the industrial heritage landscape, makes the overall character and expression of the industrial heritage landscape fuller and more intense, and strengthens the viewer’s cultural experience and spiritual and cultural value identification with the local industrial heritage landscape. Solve the problems of the lack of cultural connotation and the need to activate the multi-dimensional value level faced by the industrial heritage landscape.

Abstract:Abstract This paper is devoted to the study of industrial heritage landscape reconstruction from the perspective of cultural memory. Taking the industrial landscape reconstruction design of Baoji Shenxin Yarn Factory as an example, the historical value will be excavated and extended in all directions. Combining the traditional concept of industrial heritage, historical and cultural status, site composition and development trend, the stage industrial heritage will be presented. The problems existing in the landscape renovation, and systematic analysis, elaboration and summary of the overall environmental characteristics of Shenxin Yarn Factory. This research combines the heritage itself with landscape planning and design, comprehensively utilizes the advantages of industrial heritage resources in combination with the design principles of protection, harmony and utilization, and combines with the development of sustainable tourism to protect the construction and art of China’s industry and achieve industrialization. The value of the heritage is maximized, and the trinity of heritage landscape, economy and environment is coordinated towards the diversification of ecological, functional, practical, economic, cultural and aesthetic.
