Rapid Bedside Assay of B - Type Natriuretic Peptide in Early Diagnosis of Heart Failure

Abstract:Objective To investigate the value of rapid bedside assay of B-type natriuretic peptide(BNP)in early diagnosis of heart failure.Methods BNP levels were obtained from86patients with dyspˉnea.Two cardiologists who were blinded to BNP levels reviewed the clinical data and made the diagnosis for each patient.The correlation of BNP levels and clinical diagnosis was evaluated.Results BNP levels correlated with the degree of heart failure.Taken≥100ng/L as cut-off level,the sensitivity of BNP was91%and specificity was93%for diagnosis of heart failure with a positive and negative predictive value of93%and90%respecˉtively.Multiple logistic-regression analysis indicated that BNP≥100ng/L was a strong predictor with a odds ratio of27.9.Conclusion Rapid bedside BNP assay may be helpful in diagnosis of heart failure.BNP is a stronger independent predictor of heart failure than other clinical indicators.
