Abstract:There are numerous varieties of mulberry, and each has high medicinal value and is regarded as a promising source of traditional medicines and functional foods. Nevertheless, the nutrients and uses of mulberry differ from species (Morus alba L., Morus nigra L. and Morus rubra L.). Phenolic compounds are prominent among the biologically active ingredients in mulberry, especially flavonoids, anthocyanins and phenolic acids. Epidemiologic studies suggest that mulberry contains a rich, effective chemical composition and a wide range of biological activity, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and so on. However, compared with other berries, there has been a lack of systematic research on mulberry, and this hinders its further expansion as a functional fruit. The main purpose of this review is to provide the latest data regarding the effective chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of mulberry to support its further therapeutic potential and health functions.

Abstract:Different components of the mulberry tree (fruits, leaves, twigs, and roots) are rich in active compounds, and have been reported to possess potent beneficial properties, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-allergenic, antihypertensive, and neuroprotective. The mulberry and its extracts can effectively improve the growth performance and fitness of animals. They not only possess the properties of being safe and purely natural, but also they are not prone to drug resistance. According to the literature, the supplemental level of the mulberry and its extracts in animal diets varies with different species, physiological status, age, and the purpose of the addition. It has been observed that the mulberry and its extracts enhanced the growth performance, the quality of animal products (meat, egg, and milk), the antioxidant and the anti-inflammatory responses of animals. Furthermore, the mulberry and its extracts have antibacterial properties and can effectively moderate the relative abundance of the microbial populations in the rumen and intestines, thus improving the immunity function of animals and reducing the enteric methane (CH4) production in ruminants. Furthermore, the mulberry and its extracts have the potential to depurate tissues of heavy metals. Collectively, this review summarizes the nutrients, active compounds, and biological functions of mulberry tree products, as well as the application in livestock production with an aim to provide a reference for the utilization of the mulberry and its extracts in animal production.

Abstract:It is believed that there are various functional constituents in mulberry fruit. Resveratrol, rutin and oligomeric proanthocyanidins are mainly functional constituents in mulberry fruit. Mulberry fruit was reported having some pharmacological activities, such as preventing cardiovascular disease, resisting cancer, extending lifespan, preventing ulcer and virus. There were some reports about experiments of mulberry wine, mulberry juice, mulberry ice cream and mulberry yoghourt processing technologies.

Abstract:Mulberry leaves had been used as material of medicine, drink, and functional foods in many countries, but the variety suitability for different applications is still not clear. In this study, the nutritional and phytochemical components of mulberry tender shoots from 19 varieties in China were investigated. Obvious genotypic diversity was observed in all the assessed components. The contents of crude protein (CP), total soluble sugars (TSS), crude fiber (CF), 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), total phenolic (TP), and total flavonoid content (TF) were 27.63–37.36 g/100 g dry weight (DW), 58.71–150.31 mg/g DW, 9.90–13.85 g/100 g DW, 0.08–1.12 mg/g DW, 8.76–20.26 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g DW, and 21.36–56.41 mg rutin equivalents (RE)/g DW, respectively. Chlorogenic acid, rutin, isoquercitrin, and astragalin were considered to be mainly potential antioxidant compounds in mulberry leaves. According to the result of correlational analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), the NS14 variety had high comprehensive healthy properties. GS8, D10, XS, TP2, and DHS could be appropriate materials for functional food or drink because of high content of phenolics or DNJ. Some varieties may have a potential application as protein-rich vegetables. The study suggests that some variety of mulberry could be selected and utilized rationally for their dietary properties.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus alba L.) belongs to the Moraceae family and is widely planted in Asia. Mulberry fruits are generally consumed as fresh fruits, jams and juices. They contain considerable amounts of biologically active ingredients that might be associated with some potential pharmacological activities that are beneficial for health. Therefore, they have been traditionally used in traditional medicine. Studies have reported that the presence of bioactive components in mulberry fruits, including alkaloids and flavonoid, are associated with bioactivities such as antioxidant. One of the most important compounds in mulberry fruits is anthocyanins which are water-soluble bioactive ingredients of the polyphenol class. Studies have shown that mulberry fruits possess several potential pharmacological health benefits including anti-cholesterol, anti-obesity and hepatoprotective effects which might be associated with the presence of some of these bioactive compounds. However, human intervention studies on the pharmacological activities of mulberry fruits are limited. Therefore, future studies should explore the effect of mulberry fruit consumption on human health and elucidate the detailed compounds. This paper provides an overview of the pharmacological activities of mulberry fruits.

Abstract:There are various effective ingredients in mulberry leaves. They are mineral constituents, vitamins, food fibers, amino acids, plant sterols, flavones, and so on. Mulberry leaves have such pharmacological effects as lowering blood glucose, lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, resisting decrepitude, keeping digestive and excretory system healthy, preventing and resisting cancer, improving the immune ability,etc. Because of the existence of GABA and DNJ, mulberry leaves are the ideal materials for health care foods such as mulberry-tea, mulberry leaf juice, mulberry leaf noodle and mulberry leaf powder. The exploitation and utilizaion of mulberry leaves in the field of health care are reported in this paper.

Abstract:The mulberry plant is a member of the Moraceae family and belongs to the Morus genus. Its entire body is a treasure, with mulberries, mulberry leaves, and mulberry branches all suitable for medicinal use. The main active ingredient in mulberries is mulberry polysaccharide. Studies have shown that polysaccharides from different parts of the mulberry exhibit antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and blood pressure-lowering properties. There are more studies on the biological activities, extraction methods, and structural characterization of polysaccharides from different parts of mulberry. However, the structural characterization of mulberry polysaccharides is mostly confined to the types and proportions of monosaccharides and molecular weights of polysaccharides, and there are fewer systematic studies on polysaccharides from different parts of mulberry. In order to better understand the bioactive structure of mulberry polysaccharides. This article discusses the recent research progress on the extraction, separation, purification, bioactivity, structural modification, and application of polysaccharides from different parts of mulberry (mulberry leaves, mulberry fruits, and mulberry branches). It also delves into the pharmacological mechanisms of action of mulberry polysaccharides to provide a theoretical basis for further research on mulberry polysaccharides with a view to their deeper application in the fields of feed and nutraceuticals.

Abstract:Cranberry, one of the "Three traditional fruits" in North America, is very popular in the United States. Cranberry products were gradually being introduced into Chinese market today. There was a growing pub-lic interest for the cranberry as a functional food because of its abundant physiological active substances, espe-cially for the A-type cranberry proanthocyanidins, which was good for prevention of urinary tract infection. Al-so, there were other functions as antioxidant, anti tumor and so on. Abstract:Mulberry (Morus spp., Moracecae) is a notable medicinal and multi-functional plant. Distinct mulberry types are spread in subtropical, temperate and tropical areas all over the world. Mulberry leaves carry a number of bioactive compounds with it along with various pharmacological effects. It is a magnificent origin of nutrients, phytochemical and is been proven as nutraceutical. Mulberry leaves have a wide range of pharmacological effects having bacteriostatic, anti-hyperlipidemia, lowering blood glucose, anti-hypertensive, and antiviral properties. Mulberry leaves caloric content was determined as of carbohydrate (CHO), protein, fat, fiber, moisture and ash. Mulberry leaves contained the uppermost amount of carbohydrate (28.37%) in T1 and the lowermost amount of moisture (5.2%) in T1. The mineral content of macro-elements and micro-elements were determined from chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and sodium (Na). The content of minerals in mulberry leaves contained the highest amount of manganese (34.7) in T1 and the lowest sodium in T1. The content of vitamins in mulberry leaves contained the fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins β-carotene, C, B3 and B2 were determined. Amongst the vitamins, mulberry leaves contained the uppermost value of β-carotene (14.0mg) and the lowermost value of vitamin B3(0.04). Bioactive compounds of mulberry leaves were determined are rutin, catechins, alkaloids and quercetin. Among the bioactive compounds in mulberry leaves contained the uppermost value of quercetin (763mg). The total phenolic content was (0.42–0.80 mg) Conclusively, mulberry leaves is enriched with nutritional values. So, it can be used in the treatment of various disease

Abstract:Mulberry (Latin name "Morus alba L.") is a perennial deciduous tree in the family of Moraceae, widely distributed around the world. In China, mulberry is mainly distributed in the south and the Yangtze River basin. Its leaves can be harvested 3-6 times a year, which has a great resource advantage. Mulberry leaves are regarded as the homology of medicine and food traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Abstract:Medicinal plants from the family Moraceae have diverse applications in agriculture, cosmetics, food, and the pharmaceutical industry. Their extensive spectrum of pharmacological activity for treating numerous inflammatory illnesses, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and gastrointestinal problems reflects their biological and therapeutic value. This article summarizes the molecular mechanisms related to the biological implications of mulberry extracts, fractions, and isolated bioactive compounds from different parts in various health-related ailments. Additionally, the food industry and animal nutrition applications are summarized. Phytochemicals such as steroids, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, polysaccharides, and phenolic compounds including terpenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and tannins are found in this medicinal plant. The aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts, as well as bioactive compounds, have anti-oxidative, hypoglycemic, nephroprotective, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, anti-mutagenic, hepatoprotective, anthelmintic, immune-modulatory, cardioprotective, and skin protecting activities. Mulberry supplementation in food products improves the stability of phenolics, sensory properties, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties. Mulberry leaves in animal feed increase the nutrient digestibility, growth parameters, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This review summarized the in vivo and in vitro biological activities of the mulberry and isolated constituents in various health conditions. In addition, the food uses such as antioxidant potential, antimicrobial, and physicochemical properties were discussed. Furthermore, in vivo studies revealed mulberry as a significant protein source and its flavonoids as potential animal foliage.

Abstract:Black mulberry(Morus nigra L.),one species of Morus genus,has a long history of cultivation and utilization.Black mulberry not only has the extremely rare natural 22-ploid ecotype,but also accumulates abundant bioactive secondary metabolites in leaf,stem and fruit which have various pharmacological functions such as antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,blood sugar level reduction and skin protection.In this article,in order to facilitate further studies on black mulberry resources and provide good references for large-scale cultivation and high efficiency utilization of black mulberry resources,we summarized research progress in the origin,distribution,biological features,propagation technology,and function and utilization of the bioactive secondary metabolites,discussed some disputes in above studies,and proposed major directions and subjects of future studies on comprehensive utilization of black mulberry resources in China.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus alba L.) is an important economic crop in China. Mulberry leaves are widely used to produce various functional foods. Mulberry leaves are good food resources with high content of proteins and bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, polysaccharides, γ-aminobutyric acid and phytosterols, which have been confirmed to have antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory activities. Recently mulberry teas, vegetables, and series of foods added with mulberry leaf powders have been processed. The characteristics of mulberry leaf tea (green tea, black tea and oolong tea) differed according to processing technique. Compared with traditional mulberry leaf tea, mulberry leaf vegetable or mulberry leaf powder(juice) had more nutritional compositions and active substances. However, there was no specific mulberry variety breeding aiming at mulberry leaf vegetable or standard for quality evaluation of mulberry leaf foods. Furthermore, in a complex food system, the food processing process and the interaction between mulberry leaf components and other food materials can lead to changes in the physicochemical properties and functional qualities of mulberry leaf foods. This paper mainly reviewed the current food exploitation situations of mulberry leaves, and analyzed the main scientific problems of previous study. It provided references for further study on the reasonable utilization of mulberry leaves and development of other similar functional foods.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus spp.) of Moraceae family is regarded as a unique plant on this earth due to its broader geological distribution across the continents. It is well recognized as alternative feed resources for livestock due to high protein and energy contents as compared to other tree leaves and conventional forages. Furthermore, it can be stored for longer period for livestock in the form of silage and hay. Previous studies have explored that mulberry leaves can be ensiled with or without additive for longer periods without deteriorating quality of silage. Moreover, mulberry leaves had potential to be stored in the form of hay by different techniques. Both mulberry leaves silage and hay influence antioxidant capacity, immunity, milk yield, dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility, and milk and meat composition. This review will explore the potential positive effects of mulberry leaves in fresh and preserved forms on animal’s health and production parameters. Through this review paper, all the important nutritional characteristics of mulberry leaves both fresh and preserved form will prove that it is a novel alternative of conventional fodders or agricultural by products for livestock

Abstract:Mulberry is a fast growing deciduous plant found in wide variety of climatic, topographical and soil conditions, and is widely distributed from temperate to subtropical regions. Due to presence of valuable phytochemical constituents, mulberry as a whole plant has been utilized as a functional food since long time. Mulberry fruits are difficult to preserve as they have relatively high water content. Therefore for proper utilization, different value-added products like syrups squashes, teas, pestil sand köme, pekmez (turkuish by-products), yogurts, jams, jellies, wines, vinegar, breads, biscuits, parathas, and many more are made. In overseas, these value-added products are commercially sold and easily available, though in India, this versatile medicinal plant is still missing its identity at commercial and industrial scale. Leaves of mulberry are economically viable due to their important role in the sericulture industry since ancient times. Mulberries or its extracts exhibit excellent anti-microbial, anti-hyperglycaemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects and is used to combat different acute and chronic diseases. Different parts of Morus species like fruits, leaves, twigs, and bark exhibit strong anti-tyrosinase inhibition activity that makes it a suitable candidate in cosmetic industries as a whitening agent. The current review provides a comprehensive discussion concerning the phytochemical constituents, functionality and nutraceutical potential of mulberry and as a common ingredient in various cosmetic products.
