Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an emerging, environmentally friendly engineering system employed in China. They require lower investment and operation costs while providing higher treatment efficiency and more ecosystem services than conventional wastewater treatment methods. Introduced to China in 1987, CW systems used for wastewater treatment have rapidly increased in number, particularly since the late 1990s. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art application of CW systems for water pollution treatment by reviewing the basics of the technology and its historical development and performance efficiency. Current progress, limitations, future concerns, and the challenges of CW technologies are also discussed. Also highlighted is the need for sufficient and appropriate data to assist in the further development of CW systems and the implementation of integrated "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches by both the public in general and government bodies in particular.

The application of constructed wetland in Wuhan Swan Lake was introduced specificly from the aspects of the planning of constructed wetland, visual effects, aeration and rainwater utilization, and plant selection,so as to provide a theoretical basis and practical reference for the promote and construction of constructed wetland in city Lakes.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization and community demand for ecological civilizations, it is inevitable to consider flood risk, ecology and landscape together in the management of urban rivers. This paper first summarizes the main problems facing urban rivers in China. Ecological concepts, technologies and methodologies those are required for ecological civilization implementation are discussed. Secondly, the Nanchuan River project in Xining city is used as a case study. In recent years, the Nanchuan River has had flooding and several other problems including ecosystem fragmentation, surface erosion, water pollution and low landscaping. Four major engineering solutions were proposed, which are river flood risk control engineering, sewerage pipe engineering, wetland engineering and landscape engineering. All these concepts have been considered in an integrated way to satisfy the requirements of the urban river safety and ecological health, which can ensure the harmonious development between humans and nature.

Application of constructed wetland for urban lake water purification: trial of Xing-qing Lake in Xi'an city, China

Abstract:A comprehensive review of the current water pollution status in China has indicated that the urban lakes in Chinese cities have suffered from serious pollution and are in high risk of eutrophication, although the pollution sources have been largely controlled. The objective of this study lies in exploring a long term restoration of the aquatic ecosystem in Chinese city lakes using treatment wetland, an environmentally friendly and cost-effective technology. Trials from a subsurface horizontal flow constructed wetland (CW) have demonstrated that the treatment wetland can be used for a purpose such as lake water quality control. Average removal of 84.2% for COD, 53.8% for NH(3)-N, 47.9% for TN, 73.3% for TP and 86.6% for SS can be achieved. Relatively, low removal of nitrogen lies in the lack of nitrification and denitrification process. Accordingly, improved configuration of the treatment wetland system has been proposed and discussed. Finally, the importance of the integrated constructed wetland especially for the application of urban lake water treatment is highlighted.

Abstract:Combined with the stormwater reuse engineering in an eco-residential area of Chongqing,the quality and quantity of stormwater runoff were analyzed,and the performance of constructed wetland treating stormwater runoff and the pollutant removal efficiency in different conditions were investigated in order to aid the design,operation and maintenance of similar constructed wetland in residential areas.The results show that in South China with heavy rainfall,the stormwater runoff has the potential of utilization in new developed residential areas with separate system for its relatively good water quality.The constructed wetland has a good purification effect on stormwater in constant inflow condition and the outflow quality can meet the requirement in the Reuse of Urban Recycling Water—Water Quality Standard for Scenic Environment Use(GB/T 18921-2002).The constructed wetland can withstand short-term stronger shock load.In order to reduce the adverse effect of overflow on the environment and first flush effect on the structures,the volume of detention tank should be more than or equal to that of collected initial stormwater.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been introduced to and developed in China for environmental engineering over the most prosperous three decades (1990-2020). To study the origin, development process, and future trend of CWs, this review summarized a wide range of literatures between 1990 and 2020 by Chinese authors. Firstly, the publication number over years, research highlights, and the author contributions with the most published papers in this field were conducted through bibliometric analysis. Secondly, the most principal components of CWs, substrates and macrophytes were summarized and analyzed. Thirdly, the typical application cases from traditional CWs, pond systems to combined pond-wetland systems were presented. In China, CWs were predominately distributed in the east of the so-called 'Hu Huanyong Line'. Therefore CWs were limited by the socio-economic level and climatic conditions. It is unquestionable that the overall level of China's CWs has improved significantly, and one of the most prominent features has started towards the plural pattern development. There has been a trend of large-scale or low-cost CW application in the recent years. However, lifecycle research and management are required for better strategies in the future.

Abstract:Since the reform and opening up in the last century, many cities in China have entered the rapid stage of development, at the same time, the problem of urban water environment pollution has become increasingly prominent. Good water environment is the basic guarantee of the healthy and harmonious development of the city, therefore, people begin to invest a lot of energy on how to control the polluted water of the city reasonably and efficiently. In this paper, the present situation of water environment in most cities of our country is summarized, and the main technical measures and their advantages and disadvantages of urban polluted water treatment in the past are briefly analysed. And it further expounds on how to integrate landscape ecological construction technology into the treatment of urban polluted water in details in order to provide reference for the future urban water environment management.

Abstract:The treatment system of man-made wetland wastewater treatment is highly efficient in the removal of pollutants. Its mechanism is based on the cooperation of the substrate, vegetation and microorganisms, which interact through a series of complex physical, chemical and biological reaction to purify the wastewater. Compared with the traditional wastewater treatment process, the man-made wetland has some remarkable advantages, such as low construction and running cost and simple operation and maintenance. The research development of man-made wetland and its application to the small/medium cities in China are introduced. Its existing problems and solutions are analyzed, and its future developing trends are predicted.

Abstract:In the process of urbanization, We always neglect the issue of environmental protection. In recognition of this problem, we begin to think about the way to solve it. We find that wetlands have important ecological and environmental functions, which play an important role in maintaining regional ecological balance and the conservation of biological diversity. Especially, urban wetlands are playing an irreplaceable role in eco-city construction. The article takes Ruian city as an example to discuss the utility of natural wetland and constructed wetland in eco-city construction. We conclude that to construct an eco-city, Ruian should focus on pollution control, at the same time, we can make use of natural wetland and constructed wetland to make Ruian more beautiful and ecological.

Abstract:According to the surrounding condition and water quality of urban landscape water in northern China,taking Yanming lake for example,the combination of surface and subsurface flow constructed wetland was conducted.It was found that the removal ratio of COD,algae,and SS in the surface flow area were 63.7%,65.8%,and 79.7% respectively,which could effectively prevent the substance blocking in the following subsurface flow area.Comparing with COD,algae,and SS,the removal rate of TN,NH3-N,and TP in the subsurface flow area was 63.7%,79.7%,and 65.8%,respectively.The results show that the wetland system was feasible for urban landscape water quality restoration in northern China.
