Inpact of the Internet Factor on Literature Obsolescence in View of Barnett Model

Abstract:Based on the Barnett model of literature obsolescence and journal citationdata from chemistry and economy,the paper tests the rationality of the model through the nonlinear regression method.The result suggests that this model can explain the distribution of disciplinary citations age well;however,the model also has a defect that the result of residual analysis is not ideal.Based on the above,the paper amends the Barnett initial model by introducing the internet as an influence factor,and the regression result suggests that this amended model has a higher explaining degree and better residual analysis result than the intial one.Furthermore,the contrast of the nonlinear regression results between the pre-and post-internet era also indicates that internet actually delays the literature ageing process.Fianlly,the study confirms that the network enviroment has influenced the literature obsolescence and delayed its ageing.Through the analysis above,the authors hope to grasp the rule of literature obsolescence more accurately.
