Abstract:Miniaturization of extractors is an increasingly significant topic in chemical process intensification. Herein, a miniaturized magnetic extractor (MME) is developed by combining the micro-scale effect and the rotating flow field, and the extraction performance is characterized by a working system of water / succinic acid / n-butanol. The effects of various operational conditions are investigated. Three distinct liquid-liquid dispersion states are observed, which are closely related to the extraction performance. The MME has high capacity, superior extraction performance and high energy efficiency at relatively higher viscosity (up to 20.19 mPa center dot s) and higher phase ratio (up to 10) by arranging the stirred units in series. Equivalent specific energy dissipation e combined with the micro-scale effect is proposed as a scaling-up criterion and prediction models are established. Much better extraction performance (0.94 s(-1) < volumetric mass transfer coefficient < 5.0 s(-1)) with lower energy consumption (2.8 W/kg < epsilon < 12.7 W/kg) is obtained in the MME, compared with various extractors.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid extraction plays an important role in separation and purification of substance. Miniaturized extraction processes based on microflow have received increasing attention for application in fields such as small-scale purification, fine chemical synthesis, and the rapid analysis of chemical and biological samples. To outline the microflow extraction from its more basic form to its utilizations, this review begins by introducing the progress of research into fluidic dynamics and mass transfer on the microscale. Typical miniaturized extractors and phase separators are then presented with analysis of their advantages. Finally, typical application of microflow extraction are demonstrated, which show great potential for the miniaturization of separation processes.
Mass transfer performance and two-phase flow characteristic in membrane dispersion mini-extractor

Abstract:In this experiment, a new membrane dispersion mini-extractor with a microfiltration membrane as the dispersion media was developed for liquid–liquid extraction processes. The performance of the new extractor was tested in six experimental systems with different dispersed phase media to measure the effects of flow rates on mixing and mass transfer characteristics, as well as the relationship between transmembrane pressure and dispersed phase flow rate. For all systems, the results showed droplet diameter decreasing with an increase of volume flow rate, and higher extraction efficiency due to the increase in specific interfacial area and decrease in diffusion distance. At higher flow rates, the droplet diameter reached a minimum value and the mass transfer efficiency could be as high as 100% with residence time less than 0.2s. The mini-extractor's capacity reached around 500m3/(m2h) under the mass transfer efficiency of almost one theory stage. Because of its simple design, low cost production and increased efficiency, the membrane dispersion mini-extractor has potential for widespread industrial extraction process application.

Abstract:The structure,working process and performance of centrifugal extractor are described and its applications in non-ferrous metallurgy are reviewed,such as separations of In and Fe,Ni and Co,Zr and Hf,and rare earths,extraction of Ge from zinc sulphate solution,and treatment of poor gold-bearing liquor from gold metallurgy.The satisfactory results are achieved in these applications.

Abstract:During the last few decades, microfluidic liquid liquid extractors have been developed to address the need for separating solutes in analytical chemistry and efficiently recovering products in microfluidic reactors. This review classifies the various microfluidic liquid-liquid extractors into three major groups based on their flow arrangement: stop-flow microfluidic extractors (MEs), cocurrent MEs, and countercurrent MEs. Each group is further classified into several subcategories based on flow pattern and/or working principle. The review focuses on how to establish these three groups of microfluidic liquid-liquid extractors, including the difficulties and corresponding solutions for establishing these MEs, as well as their advantages and disadvantages The review ends with conclusions and the outlook of the field.

Abstract:High-throughput mini/microextractors are essential for mini/microextraction in industrial production. However, they are scarcely used in practice. This study presents a two-stage miniextractor with a focusing inlet that was fabricated by a selective dimension scale-out based on an oscillating feedback microextractor. The results indicate that the miniextractor enjoys the merits of microfluidics even at a maximum total throughput of 8.4 L/h with respect to a residence time of less than 0.15 s. Volumetric mass transfer coefficients for the miniextractor were approximately 1 or 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of conventional large-scale extractors and equal to or 1 order of magnitude higher than those of other micro/miniextractors. Furthermore, flow patterns and mass transfer characteristics in the miniextractor were experimentally investigated. The results suggest that the asymmetrical feedback channels, longer mixing chamber, and smaller angle of the exit splitter enhance extraction performance.

Abstract:Miniaturization of chemical equipment is becoming an important topic in process intensification and microscale flow chemistry. In this context, we developed a miniaturized annular centrifugal device (MACD) based on the microscale effect and centrifugal force. Various parameters were investigated to determine the maximum throughput of the single-phase, operating region of liquid-liquid phase separation, mass transfer performance, and mean energy dissipation rate. Detailed investigations of the controlled mechanism of the liquid-liquid flow process showed that a very fast phase separation can be achieved. The extraction efficiency and volume mass transfer coefficient were up to 99.8 % and 0.31 s(-1), respectively. The mean energy dissipation rate ranged from 0.8 x 10(4) to 3.9 x 10(4) W/m(3), which is lower than that of the similar rotating equipment. In addition, dimensionless correlations were obtained to predict the maximum throughput of the single-phase, the operating region of liquid-liquid phase separation, and the volume mass transfer coefficient. This study is the first time to propose a MACD with fast phase separation, efficient mass transfer, and low energy consumption, and provides a highly promising liquid-liquid process intensification tool.

Abstract:Although the phase-free membrane extraction process has shown many advantages over the traditional extraction, the process is still at the experimental stage. On the other hand, in a new extractor a microfiltration membrane is used as a dispersion medium. The mass-transfer performance of the new extractor was tested with 30% TBP (in kerosene)nitric acid-H2O as an experimental system. The overall mass-transfer coefficient and the equipment efficiency were calculated with the concentrations of the inlet and outlet. The extractor was designed and constructed with two special inner elements for improving the performance further. The effects of the transmembrane pressure, the continuous-phase flow rate, and the geometric parameters of the inner elements on the mass-transfer performance, as well as on the flux of the dispersion phase, are discussed. The experimental results showed that very higher efficiency was reached. The inner elements could improve the mass-transfer performance greatly by changing the two-phase contact status. The results suggested that the mass-transfer process could be completed quickly while the drop size was in the range of micrometers. In addition, the flux of the dispersed phase was mainly influenced by the transmembrane pressure, not by the equipment structures, inner elements, and the continuous-phase flow rate. The new extractor can be operated with very higher efficiency and higher flux, and the efficiency can be predicted with a cubic polynomial. (C) 2004 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
A novel membrane dispersion micro-extractor

Abstract:A novel micromixer-membrane dispersion micromixer for extraction process was developed by taking a microporous membrane as the dispersion media to achieve liquid-liquid dispersion in micrometer scale under the action of pressure difference between the two sides of the membrane. The system of n-butanol/succinic acid/water was used to test the mass transfer and phase separation characteristics. The experiment results show that very higher mass transfer efficiency can be reached under microscale transfer process in the novel micromixer. The extraction efficiency was found to be a function of volume flow, which could be explained in light of that the mean droplet size was dependent on the volume flow. This micro-extractor has the advantages of micromixing and great volume flow capacity. The clarification time after micromixing was less than 25 s in the experiments. The experimental results prove that the novel micro-extractor is a higher performance extraction equipment.
Mini liquid-liquid extractor without moving parts based on the coanda effect

Abstract:A mini liquid-liquid extractor was designed based on a feedback fluidic oscillator. According to the Coanda effect, the designed oscillator with two feedback channels enables good mixing of the aqueous and organic phases. Co-current liquid-liquid extraction was performed in the mini extractor, and it was visually observed that the aqueous phase was dispersed into small droplets because of fluidic oscillation and vortex formation. The aqueous phase was more effectively dispersed at the stage near the outlet and with increasing flow. Several tests were performed for evaluating the extraction performance of the extractor using 30% tributyl phosphate-kerosene and 3M HNO3 solutions as the organic and aqueous phases, respectively. The obtained extraction efficiency was close to the equilibrium efficiency, indicating that this extractor has the potential for liquid-liquid extraction of hazardous liquids.

Abstract:Membrane extraction is a new separation technique combining membrane separation with liquid liquid extraction. Applications of membrane extraction are described in this paper. Its applications in extracting metals, organic substances, bio products and pharmaceuticals and in membrane extractive biodegradation reactors and enzyme membrane reactors are reviewed respectively. It is pointed out that the key to putting membrane extraction into operation lies in the development of membrane materials and the enhancement of mass transfer. It is also pointed out that the extractor based on hollow fiber is the key device for membrane extraction.

Abstract:A single-stage cocurrent arrangement was described based on a three-dimensional (3-D) vortex microextractor using the vortex effect, and the 3-D microextractor was further modified to establish a countercurrent arrangement without any interstage pumps or check valves. The 3-D vortex microextractor mainly composed of an inlet channel, two circular chambers, a slender cylindrical connection channel, and an outlet channel. In both cocurrent and countercurrent operations, the flow pattern and extraction performance were investigated and analyzed. In the cocurrent arrangement, the hydraulics experiment results demonstrated that the 3-D vortex microextractor could passively and effectively produce droplets even at high fluxes of the dispersed phase. The extraction experiment results confirmed that the vortex effect of the 3-D microextractor could enhance the shear force and facilitate the production of droplets, consequently enhancing the extraction efficiency. Furthermore, it was experimentally proved that the countercurrent arrangement could be realized relying on the modified 3-D microextractor and alternatively pulsed feeding of both phases. Abstract:In 1970s,Prof.Guang-Xian Xu (K.H.Hsu) established the theory of countercurrent extraction (TCE),and further developed the technique of the static design and dynamic simulation assisted by computer,which achieved one-step scale-up of the designed process parameters applied directly to industrial productions.Since its establishment,the TCE has been a key engine in the continuous development of extraction separation technology of rare earths in China in the past 40 years.Meanwhile,the technological advances in turn serve the development of TCE.The theory was applied extensively to the inconstant mixed extraction ratio system from those with constant mixed extraction ratio system.Flowsheet has extended from 2-outlets system to 3-and multi-outlets system,and now to the Hyperlinked extraction system-a basically multi-inlet and multi-outlet system.The equations of theoretical limitations of chemical consumptions expanded to multi-component systems from two-component systems.The present article briefly reviewed the important events of theoretical development and relative applications,and the latest progresses in recent years and relative industrial potentials on the design theory of Hyperlinked extraction system were presented in detail.
Countercurrent Droplet‐flow‐based Mini Extraction with Pulsed Feeding and Without Moving Parts

Abstract:A countercurrent arrangement of immiscible liquid‐liquid mini contactors based on droplets is described in this article. Mini mixers without any moving parts were used as the contactors. The single stage mini mixer consists of a top and bottom mixing chamber. Both of the mixing chambers have two recirculating channels on either side. In these mini mixers, a liquid was broken up into droplets that dispersed into other continuously flowing liquid, consequently achieving a mass transfer between the two liquids. To realize the countercurrent arrangement, the two liquids were alternately fed into the system from opposite ends by compressed air according to a periodic program. One period consists of the following stages: organic phase feeding stage, droplet aggregation stage I, aqueous phase feeding stage, and droplet aggregation stage II. This continuous countercurrent arrangement is without the defects of continuous countercurrent arrangements based on laminar flows and multiple‐stage countercurrent arrangements based on droplets. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 3685–3698, 2016
Continuous Counter-Current Multistage Microextraction in a Novel Tube-In-Tube Microextractor

Abstract:Counter-current operation has been widely applied to enhance the extraction efficiency for systems with low distribution coefficients, which was hindered in microextraction because viscous force and surface tension dominate over gravity and inertial force. In this study, a novel design of a tube-in-tube microextractor relying on a poly tetra fluoroethylene membrane to construct a stable interface was proposed to conduct continuous counter-current extraction. Extraction kinetics for two systems with different distribution coefficients, membranes with different pore radii, and three flow rate ratios were measured as a function of residence time. For the system that toluene was used to extract 0.06 wt % phenol in water, 4.1 stages of extraction efficiency were achieved at a residence time of 9.8 min. A challenging case study (50 wt % acetone-water-toluene) was subsequently conducted to prove the high applicability for emulsion systems of this special microextractor. Lastly, a mathematical model was established and the predicted results of three flow rate ratios are in good agreement with experimental results.
Centrifugal microfluidic platforms: advanced unit operations and applications

Abstract:Centrifugal microfluidics has evolved into a mature technology. Several major diagnostic companies either have products on the market or are currently evaluating centrifugal microfluidics for product development. The fields of application are widespread and include clinical chemistry, immunodiagnostics and protein analysis, cell handling, molecular diagnostics, as well as food, water, and soil analysis. Nevertheless, new fluidic functions and applications that expand the possibilities of centrifugal microfluidics are being introduced at a high pace. In this review, we first present an up-to-date comprehensive overview of centrifugal microfluidic unit operations. Then, we introduce the term "process chain" to review how these unit operations can be combined for the automation of laboratory workflows. Such aggregation of basic functionalities enables efficient fluidic design at a higher level of integration. Furthermore, we analyze how novel, ground-breaking unit operations may foster the integration of more complex applications. Among these are the storage of pneumatic energy to realize complex switching sequences or to pump liquids radially inward, as well as the complete pre-storage and release of reagents. In this context, centrifugal microfluidics provides major advantages over other microfluidic actuation principles: the pulse-free inertial liquid propulsion provided by centrifugal microfluidics allows for closed fluidic systems that are free of any interfaces to external pumps. Processed volumes are easily scalable from nanoliters to milliliters. Volume forces can be adjusted by rotation and thus, even for very small volumes, surface forces may easily be overcome in the centrifugal gravity field which enables the efficient separation of nanoliter volumes from channels, chambers or sensor matrixes as well as the removal of any disturbing bubbles. In summary, centrifugal microfluidics takes advantage of a comprehensive set of fluidic unit operations such as liquid transport, metering, mixing and valving. The available unit operations cover the entire range of automated liquid handling requirements and enable efficient miniaturization, parallelization, and integration of assays.
A Novel Centrifugal Miniature Pump and Its Medical Application

Abstract:A miniature pump based on a high precision machining technique is described. The working principle of the pump is centrifugal. The blades of the pump are driven by a micromotor to rotate at very high speed, so the fluids from the axial direction of the pump are thrown out to the tangential direction of the pump. The available back pressure of the pump is 0 to 10 kPa (1 mH/sub 2/O). Its highest flow rate is relatively very large, so by using throttle tubes of different length and different inner diameter, variable flow rates of less than 1 /spl mu/l/min and up to 100 ml/min can be achieved easily. It is of very useful in medical and other applications.

Abstract:Continuous manufacturing is considered as one of the future trends of pharmaceutical engineering. In this work, continuous liquid-liquid extraction for sinomenine purification was realized with the usage of centrifugal extractors. Chloroform was used as the extractant because of the high distribution coefficient (>100). Higher extraction ratio can be obtained when using the centrifugal extractor of Model CWL50-N. The extraction ratio of the second-stage extraction was higher than that of the first-stage extraction. The extraction ratio of the second-stage countercurrent extraction was higher than that of second-stage cross-flow extraction. When chloroform phase was recycled for liquid-liquid extraction, the extraction ratio was also higher than 95%. This work can also be an example of continuous liquid-liquid extraction for the separation of other Chinese medicine components.

Abstract:Abstract Extractive distillation is one of the efficient techniques for separating azeotropic and low-relative-volatility mixtures in various chemical industries. This paper first provides an overview of thermodynamic insight covering residue curve map analysis, the application of univolatility and unidistribution curves, and thermodynamic feasibility study. The pinch-point analysis method combining bifurcation shortcut presents another branch of study, and several achievements have been realized by the identification of possible product cut under the following key parameters: reflux ratio, reboil ratio, and entrainer-feed flow rate ratio. Process operation policies and strategy concerning batch extractive distillation processes are summarized in four operation steps. Several configurations and technological alternatives can be used when extractive distillation processes take place in a continuous or batch column, depending on the strategy selected for the recycle streams and for the main azeotropic feeds.
